Alexander Volkov put together one of the best performances of his career at UFC Vegas 18, knocking out Alistair Overeem in two rounds after a dominant showing.
Twenty years into his mixed martial arts career, and Alistair Overeem remains one of the most dominant forces in heavyweight history. “The Demolition Man” has showed no signs of slowing down, while managing to bounce back from the few rough patches to tarnish his otherwise impressive career. He still remains as a top UFC heavyweight contender.
All good things must come to an end, however. For the past year, Overeem has been clear that his current run at the title will be his last. He’ll either win his way there, or retire should the momentum stall. On Saturday night, at UFC Vegas 18, the next step in that title quest arrived in the form of Alexander Volkov.
Volkov started the fight with a leg kick and a combination against the cage quickly. Things settled down after that, with the next big strike coming a minute later when Overeem landed two big left hands. The heavyweights exchanged big punches. Overeem went to the body with a kick, then was caught with a big left hand that dropped him. Overeem covered up but was able to escape quickly. Volkov pressured when they returned to the feet, landing a few combinations on Overeem against the cage.
Volkov got right back to work in the second round, unloading on the legend. Overeem was looking to land the big left hand, eventually electing to clinch against the cage briefly. Volkov staggered Overeem with a two-punch combination, then rocked him. Volkov followed up and Overeem had significant damage on his face. A left hand dropped Overeem and that was it. A brutally one-sided fight for Volkov, throwing his name into the heavyweight title picture.
