The UFC’s first event of 2021, UFC Fight Island 7, brings with it a lot of firsts.
The first event of the year. The first event at the newly constructed Etihad Arena. Not to mention the first UFC event on broadcast network ABC. And for headliner Max Holloway, the first fight against someone (Calvin Kattar, in this case) not named Alexander Volkanovski since July of 2019.
For Calvin Kattar, the UFC Fight Island 7 main event could push him to the brink of a title shot against the winner of Volkanovski and Brian Ortega. A win for Holloway, meanwhile, would have him counting his blessings as far as just staying in the title picture at 145lbs, as regardless of how close his second bout against Volkanovski was, a third fight so soon might be a hard sell.
Weigh-ins for the first UFC event of 2020 go down Friday — we’ll have updates below! UFC Fight Island 7 (UFC on ABC 1) takes place Saturday, January 16, 2021 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
The full card made weight without incident Friday morning — UFC Fight Island 7 is official.
