After UFC Fight Island 5, the promotion’s latest offering in Abu Dhabi, the UFC has announced the medical suspensions (these are handed down internally due to a lack of a commission). All said and done, every fighter faced some level of a layoff, with some being far longer than others.
Somewhat surprising was the number of winning fighters facing huge layoffs. In total, three will be on the shelf for 180 days after picking up victories. Among them in main event winner Cory Sandhagen. After his spinning heel kick KO of Marlon Moraes, he’ll be facing 6 months on the shelf due to an apparent eye injury, although he can be cleared early by an ophthalmologist. Also facing big layoffs were winning fighters Tom Breese and Tony Kelley, who faced knee and elbow injuries respectively. They’ll need a clean MRI to return to action.
Less surprising is the layoffs for some of the losing fighters, including Impa Kasanganay. He’ll face the same 180 days and need to see an ophthalmologist as well. Omar Morales and Rodrigo Nascimento also are on the shelf for six months after dropping their respective fights to Giga Chikadze and Chris Daukaus.
