UFC Vegas 7 turned out to be one of those cards that, while weak on paper (and frankly nearly falling apart), consistently punched above its weight.
Early action between Timur Valiev and Trevin Jones gave us a comeback of the year candidate. We nearly had another when Daniel Rodriguez survived a knockdown early and came back to finish Dwight Grant. Shana Dobson pulled off a big upset over Mariya Agapova, Joe Solecki pulled off a standing rear-naked choke, and the judges were rarely called upon.
Of course, what all eyes were really on Saturday at UFC Vegas 7 was the main event. At long last Frankie Edgar was making his debut in the UFC’s bantamweight division. A future Hall of Famer, a former lightweight champion, a multi-time featherweight title challenger. He’d made the weight, but how would he look against Pedro Munhoz? Would another drop in weight be the answer for Edgar, who at 38 years old was looking for one last title shot in his storied career?
Pedro Munhoz had stopped a former champion before, mind you (that would be Cody Garbrandt). He’d be looking to spoil Edgar’s debut, and further his case for title contention.
