Pedro Munhoz will be fighting another former UFC champion this weekend. He’s been in a similar spot before, when he knocked out former bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt at UFC 235. This weekend at UFC Vegas 7, it’ll be former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.
After contracting COVID-19, which delayed this bout (both he and his family thankfully beat the coronavirus), and seeing how the pandemic has affected the planet, “I feel very grateful to have the opportunity to fight during the pandemic,” Munhoz (18-4, 1NC) told Cageside Press during the UFC Vegas 7 media day this week. “Besides that, to be part of the main event, against another former champ. It has been crazy, but at the same time, it’s not.”
With the Edgar fight being his first main event, you could easily consider this bout the biggest of Munhoz’s career.
“Yes, definitely it’s one of the biggest fights of my career,” he agreed. “But I do believe also that every single fight is the biggest fight of my career. For the fights that I had previously, that’s the reason I’m able to do this fight.”
Edgar will be making his 135lb debut against Munhoz. It’s something fans have been waiting for for quite some time. Like the rest of us, Munhoz has his thoughts on what to expect from Edgar in his new weight class.
“Faster, stronger, skills-wise, he’s going to be sharper,” Munhoz suggested.
UFC Vegas 7 will be Munhoz’s first fight in over a year, his first trip to the octagon since a loss to Aljamain Sterling. “I took that fight, I took that loss, like a learning process, to see what I need to get better at,” said Munhoz. “I do believe that I got a little bit smarter in that sense. Saturday’s a good test to put all that in perspective.”
