There’s more than just a title on the line in the main event of UFC 252 this weekend.
No matter what happens on Saturday night, Daniel Coirmer has cemented himself as one of the greatest UFC champions there ever was. A Storybook ending of D.C going out and winning the heavyweight title (again) to cap off an outstanding career would be amazing to see. But if D.C gets dropped with body shots in the first round and loses via TKO inside the first few minutes of the fight, it’s not really going to have much of a bearing on how the fanbase views Cormier, or his career as a whole.
Simply put, D.C. is one of the sport’s good guys. But what about Stipe Miocic? The hard-working, blue collar everyman, who refused to give up his job as a firefighter even when he reached the top of the sport. And who has put together a resume worthy of consideration as the greatest heavyweight of all time.
No matter who wins at UFC 252, it’s not just the belt, but legacy, that the pair are battling over. Ultimately, however, what you are set to witness is two future Hall of Famers completing one of the biggest trilogies in the sport’s history.
It would be a good idea to make a point to be present and in the the moment this Saturday. One of the greats of this sport is going to be competing for the last time, so might as well soak it in while you can. And see if D.C. gets that storybook ending.
