What do you do when you can’t fight anyone willing to fight you? Look to someone who will fight anyone. That appears to be the case with Geoff Neal and Neil Magny, who have been lined up to fight on the UFC’s August 29 card.
ESPN was first to report the booking. Verbal agreements for the bout are in place.
Neal (13-2) has historically struggled to find opponents. Perhaps for good reason. The welterweight is currently on a seven fight win streak, dating back to his time prior to the UFC. Five wins inside the octagon have left an impression, especially his head kick finish of Mike Perry at UFC 245. Names like Niko Price and Belal Muhammad also litter his resume.
When it comes to Neil Magny (23-7), the real question is, who hasn’t he fought? A very active fighter at 170lbs, Magny is tied for the UFC record for most wins in a year, with five. Alongside Donald Cerrone and Angela Hill, he’s been one of the busiest fighters in recent years, minus a spell he sat out due to a USADA test that turned out to be a contaminated supplement — a case that changed the rules as to how USADA handles contamination incidents.
Magny has defeated Li Jingliang and Anthony Rocco Martin so far this year. He’ll look to make it three in a row against Neal.
The UFC announced earlier this week that it intended to host all five of its August events at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
