The UFC has one last event in Las Vegas prior to making the trip to Fight Island. This weekend, it’s UFC on ESPN 12, a card headlined by a fan-friendly pairing between ex-interim lightweight champ Dustin Poirier, and the gritty Dan Hooker.
“Fan Friendly” is a term that gets thrown around a lot. However, this pairing may be one that actually lives up to the name. Poirier is remembered best for wars against Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, and Max Holloway. Dan “The Hangman” Hooker earned fans even in a loss to Edson Barboza, and has picked up the win in his next three fights. Each of these lightweight fighters brings with them a “never back down” style to the octagon — making this the sort of fight that could turn out to be a classic.
The rest of the UFC on ESPN 12 card, meanwhile, feels like something of an oddity. Gian Villante will fight as a heavyweight for the first time in the UFC. Jinh Yu Frey, Invicta FC’s former atomweight champ, will debut as a strawweight. Against a fellow Invicta alum making her own octagon debut in 20-year-old Kay Hansen. Former PFL champ Philippe Lins was making a quick turnaround against Canada’s Tanner Boser. And Brendan Allen, who has struggled to find opponents of late, had a short-notice foe lined up in Kyle Daukaus.
The UFC on ESPN 12 official weigh-in kicks off at 12PM ET — check back for full results.
Despite a couple of short-notice fighters appearing, the full card made weight for Saturday’s event!
