In a heated co-main event, Martin Vettori would get a dominating submission victory over Karl Roberson.
While it might not exactly be the great grudge match of our time, Marvin Vettori vs. Karl Roberson certainly was a grudge match. Vettori had been looking for a fight since UFC London in March, a card scuttled by the coronavirus pandemic. He thought he’d found that last month at UFC Jacksonville, against Roberson.
It wasn’t to be. Roberson missed weight. Then he dropped off the card due to medical complications. Vettori was livid, and the pair clashed in a hotel lobby. A month later, and they’re ready to go again. But in an added twist, Roberson again missed weight. By a wider margin this time out.
All this ensured that the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 10 would be a hotly contested one.
Roberson opened with a quick left hand to start the fight. He would land another fast 1-2 while having Vettori on the backfoot. Vettori would land a quick right, but Roberson would counter with a strong leg kick. Roberson would land a question mark kick and look for a right hand before Vettori would get a big takedown with about three minutes remaining. Vettori looked for a guillotine choke but Roberson would slip out. Roberson would once again get stuck in a choke while standing but would jump off the cage to get out of the guillotine. Vettori would again take him down, however, and landed some heavy ground and pound en route to getting a rear-naked-choke locked in. He would get the choke and would get the tap!
