The UFC’s third straight show back in Las Vegas has taken a bit of heat. The main event of UFC on ESPN 10, Jessica Eye vs. Cynthia Calvillo, was greeted with a raised eyebrow from some fans. That, however, sells both the UFC and the main event fighters short.
The UFC, of course, is tasked with booking events during a pandemic. It’s a self-inflicted pain, to the extent that they chose to be the first sport back, with the coronavirus still making its way through the population. Still, someone had to be first, and there’s been reason for cautious optimism so far.
Eye, meanwhile, is the number one ranked contender in the women’s flyweight division. Too much, perhaps, is still being read into her crushing loss to Valentina Shevchenko. Plenty of fighters have fallen to “Bullet,” and Eye bounced back with her win over Viviane Araújo at UFC 245.
Calvillo, meanwhile, will fight as a flyweight for the first time in the UFC. And a win could leave her with a solid placement inside the top five of the weight class.
Tune in for full results from Friday morning’s official weigh-in, kicking off at 12PM ET.
In a shocking turn of events, Karl Roberson again missed weight for his fight with Marvin Vettori. He came in at 190.5lbs, a full 4.5lbs over the middleweight limit. Darrick Minner later announced he was pulling out of the card due to weight cut complications. And main event fighter Jessica Eye just barely missed weight, with the barrier, coming in at 126.25lbs. She appeared unsteady on her feet and stated she was done cutting.
