One more time. One more time in the span of eight days, the UFC will visit the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena, for the final event of a three-fight stint in Jacksonville. This time out, it’s UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Harris, essentially the reconstructed UFC on ESPN 8 card.
With the fights unfolding Saturday, Friday morning meant one final official weigh-in. With no ceremonial weigh-in being held for obvious reasons, this was the last stop for fighters before finally colliding inside the octagon.
And the last chance for fans to check out their favorites prior to fight night.
The card was topped by a heavyweight showdown between Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris. A fight that was supposed to happen back in December at UFC DC, until the murder of Harris’ step-daughter Aniah Blanchard changed plans. Overeem went on to be knocked out in the dying seconds of his fight with Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
Harris, meanwhile, makes his return on Saturday.
Check back starting at 9AM ET for full results from the morning weigh-in.
While the weigh-in Friday went down without a hitch (Irwin Rivera was set to weigh-in separately as he’s pending medical clearance and a COVID-19 test), there were two big surprises. One, Marvin Vettori weighed in — as a light heavyweight alternate. Then, when everything was wrapping up, Urijah Faber hit the scales, unexpectedly. He came in at 153.5 as a lightweight alternate.
The card does not have a single lightweight or light heavyweight bout scheduled. However, presumably, should Rivera not be cleared to fight, Giga Chikadze could accept the lightweight bout against Faber. The same could be said if anyone drops out of the two middleweight bouts, in the case of Vettori.
Update: It appears Faber weighing in has more to do with Song Yadong, per a report by MMA Junkie. The Chinese fighter trains under Faber at Team Alpha Male, and has been experiencing visa issues. Faber could step in to replace him, if he’s unable to fight against Marlon Vera.
