Drew Dober’s aggressive striking was simply too much for Alexander Hernandez at UFC Jacksonville, stopping the fight in the second round.
Lightweight Drew Dober watched friend and training partner Justin Gaethje earn the biggest win of his career over the weekend at UFC 249. On Wednesday at UFC Jacksonville, Dober had a chance to make it three in a row against the returning Alexander Hernandez.
Alexander Hernandez got off the first combination, firing a kick and a pair of punches. Dober then landed a hard counter right. Hernandez pushed in and scored a brief takedown and hit Dober with a few knees as he was standing up. Dober was looking to take advantage of Hernandez’s more cautious approach that he displayed in his previous fight by winging bombs. Dober started mixing in kicks as he controlled the standup, stuffing a takedown as well. More heavy blows landed for Dober, who accidentally poked Hernandez in the eye at the very end of the round.
Hernandez gave the eyepoke right back at the start of the second round, briefly pausing the action. When action resumed, Dober continued to throw bombs, forcing Hernandez to shoot for a takedown. Dober stuffed it with a big knee to the body to keep the fight in his wheelhouse. Hernandez landed a few jabs but was caught by more Dober hooks that caused him to back away. Dober stays on him, landing a lunging right hook. The pursuit continued and Hernandez was briefly dropped but popped right into a successful takedown. Dober landed elbows from the bottom then muscled his way to his feet to get striking again. A two-punch combination rocked the already struggling Hernandez, sending him off balance. Dober stuffed a takedown, then got right back to work, blasting Hernandez to send him backpedaling. Hernandez hits the fence and Dober keeps the onslaught going. The referee had seen enough and stopped the contest.
