As expected, Alexa Grasso’s next fight will come at flyweight. After missing weight at UFC 246 by over 5lbs and seeing her fight against Claudia Gadelha cancelled, Grasso will face Ji Yeon Kim at June’s UFC Austin (UFC on ESPN 9).
The UFC officially announced the bout on Instagram Friday morning.
Grasso’s sizeable weight flub ahead of the Gadelha fight was not her first miss in the promotion. In 2017, she also missed the strawweight limit for what was ultimately a losing effort against Canada’s Randa Markos. Grasso (11-3) is currently coming off a loss to ex-115lb champ Carla Esparza.
The Mexican fighter sits at 3-3 inside the octagon, after going on an 8-0 run to start her career prior to the UFC. She previously competed for Invicta FC.
Korean Ji Yeon Kim (9-2-2) is 3-2 in the promotion, and last fought in October, when she defeated Nadia Kassem at UFC 243. The UFC Austin card will mark her third time fighting stateside, and her first time competing in Texas. Kim is a former Jewels bantamweight champion.
UFC Austin (UFC on ESPN 9) takes place June 27, 2020 at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas. The only other fight announced for the card thus far is another women’s flyweight bout, featuring Viviane Araújo vs. Jennifer Maia.
