UFC 248 turned out to be an action-packed, must-see card. And at least one of the fights instantly became an all-time classic.
That would be the co-main event between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Weili Zhang. Jedrzejczyk, the former strawweight champion, gave it her all, pouring out a flood of strikes over five rounds. Weili Zhang, the Chinese champion making her first title defense, had the edge in power. In a very back-and-forth fight they went the distance, both women bloodied and battered. Zhang would take the split decision win, while Jedrzejczyk boasted a hematoma for the ages for her troubles.
The fight, however, will long be remembered as one of the best in women’s MMA.
Beniel Dariush also picked up a big win Saturday at UFC 248, with a fantastic knockout of Drakkar Klose in another back-and-forth fight. Danaa Batgerel opened the card with a big knockout of his own, while a number of other names, including the returning Sean O’Malley, also captured finishes.
If any fight didn’t deliver as hoped, it was the main event. Challenger Yoel Romero chose to employ a measured game plan that saw him conserve energy, and restrict movement. Not at all the power vs. technique battle the fans hoped for. Or at least, not at the pace they wanted it.
Following the event, tune in (above) for the UFC 248 post-fight press conference.
