After hitting a roadblock in his move to welterweight, Kevin Lee is heading back down to lightweight against Gregor Gillespie at UFC 244.
Kevin Lee’s return to lightweight is official. Following a report by MMA Junkie, Gregor Gillespie confirmed on social media that he’d be facing Lee at UFC 244 next month. The New York card is quickly filling up, and is headlined by the “BMF” belt title fight between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal.
Only in MMA, right?
Lee (17-5) made the jump to welterweight back in May at UFC Rochester, after some well-documented struggles making the 155lb limit. ‘The Motown Phenom’ has been a vocal proponent for a 165lb division, but that doesn’t seem likely as long as Dana White runs the good ship UFC. As a result, having come up short against Rafael Dos Anjos in Rochester, it’s back to lightweight for Lee.
When he heads back down next month, he’ll be looking to snap a two fight skid, with the other loss coming in a rematch against Al Iaquinta.
Gregor Gillespie (13-0) has been on a tear so far in his UFC run. Lee, however, represents the biggest name he’s been paired up with to date. ‘The Gift’ has won six bouts under the UFC banner, most recently against Yancy Medeiros. He’ll also have the crowd on his side, as a New York native residing in Long Island.
UFC 244 takes place November 2, 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY.
