UFC Sao Paulo’s main event will see Ronaldo Souza at home in Brazil against Jan Blachowiz, as ‘Jacare’ makes the jump to light heavyweight.
November’s UFC Sao Paulo card has it’s main event set. On Tuesday, ESPN reported that Jacare Souza will take on Jan Blachowicz on the card. That will mark Souza’s debut at 205lbs for the promotion, the latest in a long line of middleweights making the move up.
It also marks the elimination of Blachowicz as a candidate as the next opponent for light heavyweight champ Jon Jones.
Souza (26-7) last fought in the main event of UFC Fort Lauderdale, losing a decision to Jack Hermansson. He’s been trading wins and losses over his past five fights, earnings wins against Derek Brunson and Chris Weidman in that span. In addition to Hermansson, Souza has lost fights to Kelvin Gastelum and Robert Whittaker.
For Blachowicz, it’s not the title fight he was looking for. The Polish former KSW star is 5-1 in his last six, and is coming off a win over ex-middleweight champion Luke Rockhold. Prior to that, he was knocked out by recent title challenger Thiago Santos.
Prior to Jacare making the move, Chris Weidman, Thiago Santos, and Anthony Smith all jumped from middleweight to light heavyweight. Chris Weidman will make the switch next month. No one, however, has been able to solve the puzzle that is Jon Jones as of yet.
UFC Sao Paulo takes place November 16, 2019 at the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
