UFC San Antonio finally has a main event as top welterweight contender Leon Edwards will take on Rafael dos Anjos in the headliner on July 20.
Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports reported on Thursday that former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will be taking on Leon “Rocky” Edwards in the main event of UFC San Antonio on July 20. The bout comes together with just 37 days before it is set to take place.
As the event drew closer, there was speculation that flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko would make a quick turnaround to face Liz Carmouche who was already scheduled to compete on the card against Roxanne Modafferi. Another bout that was discussed was moving Luke Rockhold vs Jan Blachowicz from UFC 239 on July 6, but Rockhold reportedly had a prior commitment to shoot a commercial for Ralph Lauren that could not be rescheduled.
Got the official word that @RdosAnjosMMA turned down a fight with me in August. Add him to the list of pussies that don't want this smoke. That makes 5 now. The so-called top welterweights are a joke #strapseason #mrdoitall

In an interesting twist, Edwards claims that dos Anjos rejected a bout with him for August. Edwards is on a seven fight win-streak that includes victories over Donald Cerrone and Gunnar Nelson. Meanwhile, former UFC lightweight champion dos Anjos returned to the win column in May where he defeated Kevin Lee by fourth round submission.
UFC San Antonio is set to take place at the AT&T Center in San Antonio on July 20 and air live on ESPN. Otherwise known as UFC on ESPN 4, it also features Andrei Arlovski vs. Ben Rothwell, and a grudge match between Greg Hardy and Juan Adams.
