Darren Stewart got the nod over Bevon Lewis on the scorecards at UFC 238, in a fight that did little to excite fans in attendance.
UFC 238 went down Saturday from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois and saw the meeting of two men looking for a return to the win column when Bevon Lewis and Darren Stewart met up on the early preliminary card. After a late round KO loss in his UFC debut to Uriah Hall at UFC 232, Bevon Lewis returned to the octagon and his home town of Chicago looking to right the ship. For Darren Stewart this match up was his chance to get back on the right track after stringing together a pair of wins before he came up short to Edmen Shahbazyan at the TUF: Heavy Hitters Finale.
Opening the action at UFC 238, Stewart landed a leg kick that dropped Lewis but he was quick to recover. Back on their feet they clinched and worked against the cage for position. Lewis landed a couple of good knees to the body of Stewart. Stewart answered back with a knee to the head as the two continued to work on the cage. Off the break Stewart landed a nice right before they clinched again and Lewis looked to land the knee again. Stewart landed hard right as the two split that looked to have Hurt Lewis, he recovered quickly and clinched up once again before breaking and exchanging back in the middle of the cage. Lewis fired off a pair of kicks that Stewart shrugged off before he moved forward and landed another hard leg kick that stumbled Lewis. The two exchanged as the bell sounded with Stewart landing a right just after the bell.
Opening the second Stewart came out with another hard leg kick and Lewis checked a second. Stewart looked to cut off the octagon as Lewis circled, Stewart landed another leg kick and looked for a spinning back fist. Lewis rushed forward with a right then spun to take Stewart’s back for a moment. Stewart was quick to escape and they engaged again on their feet. Stewart continued to stalk Lewis around the octagon as the two exchanged punches, Lewis circled to the right and Stewart fired another leg kick. The pace of the fight slowed considerably at this point and Stewart looked for a late take down that Lewis defended at the bell.
Lewis looked to come out quickly and pressed the action in the third. He clinched and pressed Stewart into the cage as they fought for position. Stewart slipped away and they engaged again in the center of the octagon. Lewis again circled away and Stewart landed another leg kick. Lewis shot in for the take down and spun to Stewart’s back, Stewart tried to peel Lewis off against the cage and managed to get back into the clinch. The two men worked in the clinch, but neither man looked to have the advantage. They separated and Stewart took the chance and fired off a flurry of punches as the horn sounded to end the round and the fight. Not a ton of action, with Stewart getting the win from the judges.
