It seems as if all the online back and forth has finally paid off, as Ben Askren and Jorge Masvidal have a date set — UFC 239.
Ben Askren and Jorge Masvidal have verbally agreed to a fight on July 6 at UFC 239. The two fighters have gone back and forth on Twitter of late, throwing barbs at each other which had fans practically begging for a fight. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani was first to report the news.
Most recently, Jorge Masvidal is coming off a win against the UK’s Darren Till in Till’s own back yard. Masvidal put down Till in the second round with a viscous flurry that knocked Till out cold. Post fight, Masvidal got into a scuffle back stage with Leon Edwards, who also was on the card. The bad blood led many fans to believe Masvidal-Edwards was next.
Ben Askren is also coming off another win, this time marking his UFC debut. He controversially submitted Robbie Lawler with a bulldog choke in round one at UFC 235. Referee Herb Dean called the fight off despite Lawler being completely conscious. Lawler was visibly upset but soon calmed down and made peace with Dean. With his former team mate, Tyron Woodley, no longer the champ, Askren is looking to make a quick run to take on newly crowned champ, Kamaru Usman.
Askren versus Masvidal is sure to be an entertaining fight leading up to, and during the fight. Both fighters are loved by fans and always put on a show.
Building UFC 239
UFC 239 is star studded already. Headlining the card is Jon Jones and Thiago Santos for the light heavyweight title. The co-main event is just as good. Amanda Nunes returns to the bantamweight division and is taking on Holly Holm. Also at UFC 239, Luke Rockhold makes his light heavyweight debut against Jan Błachowicz.
