With Daniel Spitz forced off UFC Wichita due to “medical issues,” TUF 28 cast member Maurice Greene gets the nod against an old foe in UFC newcomer Jeff Hughes.
The injury bug has hit UFC Wichita. On Friday, UFC officials announced that Daniel Spitz was off the card due to medical issues, the nature of which were not disclosed. Heavyweight Spitz had been expected to face newcomer Jeff Hughes at the event. In Spitz’s place will step The Ultimate Fighter 28 alum Maurice Greene. Greene, a controversial figure on the 28th edition of the show, won his bout at the finale. However, he came up short overall in the TUF tournament, being eliminated earlier in the season.
Spitz (5-2) had been coming off a loss to Walt Harris, while Hughes (10-1) is the winner of four straight. He won his way into the UFC on the Contender Series, and interestingly enough, holds a win over Greene while on his current four-fight win streak. That came at LFA 38 last August.
The rematch gives Greene (6-2) the chance for revenge against the last man to beat him. Greene got the better of Michel Batista at the TUF 28 Finale in November, earning a first-round triangle submission choke.
Greene’s time on the show was mired by alcohol issues, and saw fellow castmate Marciea Allen nearly exit the series after she became uncomfortable with Greene’s antics.
UFC Wichita (UFC Fight Night 146) takes place March 9 at the Intrust Bank Arena. The event is the first trip to the state of Kansas for the promotion.
