Michael Chiesa has a date and opponent set at long last for his first foray into the welterweight division under the UFC banner.
Following an initial report by Damon Martin of MMANYTT, it appears Michael Chiesa finally has an opponent set for his debut in the UFC’s welterweight division. Chiesa, who vowed to leave lightweight behind after missing weight for his UFC 226 fight against Anthony Pettis, will meet Carlos Condit at UFC 232 in December. The fight will be Chiesa’s first at 170lbs in the UFC, after winning The Ultimate Fighter 15 at lightweight and sticking with the division since.
Chiesa (14–4) faced Pettis at UFC 226 after their meeting at UFC 223 was disrupted by the antics of Conor McGregor. Born in Colorado and residing in Washington, Chiesa is currently suing McGregor over the incident. The melee in the parking garage of the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn last April left Chiesa cut from broken glass when McGregor smashed a bus window with a hand cart.
Inside the octagon, Chiesa has struggled of late, dropping his last two fights. Those were against the aforementioned Pettis, and Kevin Lee.
Carlos Condit (30-12), a former interim welterweight champ in the UFC and challenger to the undisputed title against Georges St. Pierre, recently returned from an extended layoff only to lose to both Neil Magny and Alex Oliveira within the past twelve months. UFC 232 will mark his third fight in a little over a year, but the ‘Natural Born Killer’ has not tasted victory since 2015, and has lost four straight.
UFC 232 takes place December 29 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. A women’s featherweight super-fight between featherweight champ Cris Cyborg and bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes is expected to top the event.
