While not quite a veteran vs. prospect match-up given Weili Zhang’s record, a scheduled bout with Jessica Aguilar at UFC Beijing should be an excellent test of the Chinese fighter’s skills.
A rather interesting women’s strawweight bout has been added to UFC Beijing. First reported by Brazil’s Combate, Jessica Aguilar will face China’s own Weili Zhang at the event, taking place this November. Zhang made her UFC debut earlier this year, and immediately made an impression. Aguilar, meanwhile, was for a time considered one of the top women at 115lbs on the planet, if not the very best. That, however, was prior to her UFC run.
Zhang (17-1) made her UFC debut at UFC 227, defeating Danielle Taylor via unanimous decision. It was the rare Zhang fight that went the distance. The Chinese fighter has traditionally been a finisher, stopping opponents in fifteen of her seventeen professional wins.
Fighting on home soil in Beijing, Zhang will meet ‘Jag,’ otherwise known as Jessica Aguilar. Aguilar will be coming off a win over Jodie Esquibel. However, she’s just 1-2 in the UFC overall, and has struggled to stay healthy since signing with the promotion in 2015. Since then, she’s seen no fewer than three bouts fall through.
Prior to joining the UFC, Aguilar fought for the World Series of Fighting, and had been considered the best of the best at strawweight. However, losses to Claudia Gadelha and Cortney Casey quieted that talk upon her arrival in the UFC. Now, she’ll look to even out her record against Zhang.
UFC Beijing (UFC Fight Night 141) takes place November 25, 2018 at the Cadillac Arena in Beijing, China. Curtis Blaydes and Francis Ngannou meet in a rematch in the main event.
