Cortney Casey isn’t sure how to fix judging in MMA, but she’s going to try and stick to Dana White’s favorite saying, and not let it go to the judges at UFC Lincoln.
Lincoln, NB — Cortney Casey is quickly becoming the UFC’s short-notice Queen. Her willingness to step up is a topic we covered when speaking to her earlier this month, as she was preparing to face Angela Hill at UFC Lincoln. On Thursday, she revisited the topic as part of the UFC Fight Night 135 media day, and also addressed the issues with judging in the sport.
“I have no idea, but it’s terrible,” she said on the topic of judging in MMA. Casey has lost a couple of close split decisions recently, and certainly has no love lost for the judges. “I don’t know, just don’t let it go to the judges I guess, what Dana always says. That’s the best way to fix it. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to do that yet.”
On whether her troubles, between judges and a botched drug test in Texas, have ever made her question her dedication to the sport, she affirmed that they had not. “You’ve got good days and you’ve got bad days, and I just try to blow off the bad days as much as I can,” said Casey. “I’ve had a pretty rough stint in the UFC as far as judges go, commissions go, I had that issue with the Brazilian commission and everything like that as well. It doesn’t deter me from doing my job, I still have passion for the sport”
“Those are things I can’t control, commissions and judges and stuff like that,” she added. “What I can control is me growing as a martial artist, and the fight, and stuff like that, and that’s the part I enjoy.”
As far as taking yet another short notice fight, Casey said simply that “they called, and I said yes. I don’t know what else to say, other than that. I just live my life as easy as possible, and I train as hard as I can. When they call, I say yes, as long as I have enough time to do a healthy cut and stuff like that.”
That answer is exactly why she’s become the UFC’s short-notice Queen. Just one looking to avoid the judges at all costs.
UFC Lincoln (UFC Fight Night 125) takes place Saturday, August 25 at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska. Cortney Casey vs. Angela Hill takes place on the main card, airing on Fox Sports 1 (TSN 5 in Canada).
