UFC Calgary will play host to a promising lightweight battle when Alex Hernandez meets Canada’s Olivier Aubin-Mercier.
What a way to kick off a long weekend in Canada, eh? ‘The Canadian Gangster’ (perhaps the best gimmick change in MMA of late) Olivier Aubin-Mercier will look to continue his recent success in the octagon when he meets Alex Hernandez this July at UFC Calgary. The promotion announced the news Friday, just in time for Canada’s Victoria Day holiday (and National Patriots’ Day in Quebec).

Olivier Aubin-Mercier (11-2) will storm into Calgary on a four fight win streak. That was capped off at UFC 223 last month, with a finish of Evan Dunham set up with a crushing knee to the body. The Ultimate Fighter: Nations finalist is 7-2 in the UFC, and broke into the top fifteen at 155lbs off the strength of that performance. He’s currently ranked fifteenth in the division. Since UFC rankings, which are determined by voting from members of the media, don’t really make much sense, he’s facing the thirteenth ranked fighter in Alex Hernandez, despite Hernandez having but a single fight in the promotion.
Speaking of, Hernandez (9-1) shocked many with a round one knockout of Beneil Dariush at UFC 222 earlier this year. The upset victory certainly put him on MMA fans’ radar. Now, they will get to see how he looks in his sophomore effort against ‘OAM,’ who won’t be taking Hernandez lightly.
UFC Calgary, which is UFC on FOX 30, will take place at the Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta on July 28. In addition to Aubin-Mercier vs. Hernandez, the card features Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier, Jose Aldo vs. Jeremy Stephens, and Jonna Jedrzejczyk vs. Tecia Torres.
