‘Gunni’ is getting back in the cage, as Iceland’s Gunnar Nelson has been lined up with Elevation Fight Team’s Neil Magny.
The UFC’s Liverpool date continues to fill out, with an intriguing welterweight scrap the most recent addition to the card. That fight will see Neil Magny, fresh off a decision win over Carlos Condit, return to action against SBG Ireland’s Gunnar Nelson. The pairing was first reported by MMA Journalist Farah Hannoun. The UFC has since added it to the event’s official fight card.
For Magny, a key coach and member of Colorado’s Elevation Fight Team, it’s a chance to begin compiling another win streak in the 170lb weight class. Magny (20-6) has won twelve of his last fifteen UFC bouts, and at one point was on a seven fight streak in the promotion. His only losses since 2014 have come to Lorenz Larkin, Rafael dos Anjos, and Demian Maia. During that span, he’s picked up wins over Hector Lombard, Johny Hendricks, Kelvin Gastelum, and the aforementioned Condit.
His opponent in Liverpool, Iceland’s Gunnar Nelson (16–3–1), has won four Performance of the Night bonuses during his UFC tenure. He’ll head to UFC Liverpool off a controversial loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio. At UFC Glasglow last year, an eye poke not penalized by the ref during his bout with Ponzinibbio led to him being knocked out; an appeal was later denied by the UFC.
UFC Liverpool — also known as UFC Fight Night 130 — takes place at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England on May 27.
