Once again, calling out an opponent has paid off for a UFC star. After asking for the fight, Sam Alvey should be all smiles, as he’s been booked against Gian Villante.
‘Smile’n’ Sam Alvery had a great result just a few weeks ago, at UFC Orlando. There, he made short work of promotional newcomer Marcin Prachnio in a light heavyweight bout. It was Alvey’s first fight at 205lbs in years, but it certainly went well for the popular middleweight. Now, it appears he’s going to stick around the weight class (a subject we discussed with Alvey prior to UFC on FOX 28 in Orlando) a while longer. As first reported by Newsday, Alvey has been paired up against Gian Villante at UFC Utica later this year. Alvey respectfully called for a fight with Villante following his win over Prachnio.
Team Quest product Alvey (32–10 (1)), now thirty-one, improved to 3-2 in his past five with the Pracnio win. It was a strong performance that helped erase the memory of a bad weight cut and decision loss to Ramazan Emeev at UFC Gdansk last year. Alvey also picked up wins over a couple of UFC veterans in that stretch, namely Rashad Evans and Nate Marquardt.
Gian Villante, meanwhile, heads into UFC Fight Night 131 (as UFC Utica is otherwise known) off a split decision win over Francimar Barroso. Prior to that, he’d lost two straight to Shogun Rua and Patrick Cummins.
The Fight Night card takes place June 1 at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York.
