Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic both retained their titles at UFC 220 on Saturday, sparking talk of a superfight.
Following the events of UFC 220 — which saw both light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier and heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic retain their titles — talk immediately turned to “who’s next.” While that happens after every event, having the two big men on the same card, and both coming out on top, perhaps lit more of a fire than usual. Cormier, of course, is a former Heavyweight champion back in Strikefroce. Undefeated in the weight class, he beat both Frank Mir and Roy Nelson at heavyweight in the UFC before making the cut to 205lbs.
The flames were fanned when UFC President Dana White said post-fight that it’s a fight he’d like to see. But what about Daniel Cormier himself?
“People have talked about that for a really long time” he said of the idea of him moving back up. “I did fight 13 fights at heavyweight, and I hate cutting weight as you guys all know. I’m the only guy who gets a rousing ovation every time he steps on the scale and makes weight.”
“I haven’t really thought about it” he continued. “Especially, it’s hard for me now because Cain’s in the gym more. Cain’s in the gym now, getting back prepared to do what he does best.” A friend and training partner, Velasquez is also an inspiration to the light heavyweight champ.
“I draw so much from him” he told the media at Saturday’s post-fight press conference. “Cain had a baby about a month ago, and he’s here with me right now. I didn’t even know, I didn’t bother to ask him if he was coming to the fight because I didn’t know if it was possible because of the new baby.” That’s the loyalty the pair have to each other. And because of that, “if he’s getting prepared to get that belt back then I have nothing for that division. It’ll never change.”
It doesn’t sound like Miocic vs. Cormier will be happening any time soon.
