A freak injury has forced Zak Cummings out of his bout with Thiago Alves at UFC Fight Night 124.

UFC welterweight Zak Cummings is off Sunday’s UFC St. Louis card after suffering a freak injury. The UFC announced the news late Friday. Cummings had been set for what was arguably the biggest fight of his career at the show, against the ever-dangerous Thiago Alves.

Per the UFC’s statement, a women’s bantamweight fight between Irene Aldana and Talita Bernardo will move to the Fox Sports 1 card, taking the place of Cummings vs. Alves.

Cummings went into detail on the injury on Twitter, when a fan suggested a bad weight cut was behind the withdrawal. Nothing of the sort, per Cummings. Instead, a slip getting out of the tub saw him with a bad gash on the head that required medical attention.

“I’m absolutely fucking devastated right now. This one of the best cuts I’ve ever had and slipped while moving from the tub to the ground and cracked my f***ing skull on a handrail. I’ve missed most of my 3 months olds entire life!” he wrote.

He later added that “I’m in ER now figuring out stitches or staples. CT and everything, I’ll fight Alves a soon as I’m cleared hopefully.”

Cummings vs. Alves had been set to open the televised portion of the card on Fox Sports 1. Given the timing, a replacement could not be found for Alves. Depending on the severity of the injury, the bout could be re-scheduled for a future date.

UFC St. Louis (UFC Fight Night 124) takes place Sunday, January 14 in St. Louis, MO at the Scottrade Center. Doo-Ho Choi faces Jeremy Stephens in the main event.
