The ever-so-briefly retired Derrick Lewis (who spoke of walking away from the sport after losing to Mark Hunt earlier this Summer) is set to return, with a former UFC heavyweight champion in his sights. According to a report from MMA Fighting, Lewis will meet Brazilian Fabricio Werdum at UFC 216 this October.
Prior to the Hunt loss, Lewis (18–5 (1)) had run up a six fight win streak in the UFC, with five of those wins coming by way of KO/TKO. The lone decision was to the nearly unfinishable Roy Nelson, while Lewis’ stoppages came against the likes of Travis Browne, Gabriel Gonzaga, and others.
Fabricio Werdum, meanwhile, enters UFC 216 coming off a majority decision loss in the third fight of his trilogy with Alistair Overeem. That bout came at UFC 213 in July, didn’t exactly leave a good taste in either the fighter’s or fan’s mouths.
UFC 216 takes place October 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Thus far, there are a total of nine fights on the card, including:
Fabricio Werdum vs. Derrick Lewis
Tony Ferguson vs. Kevin Lee
Beneil Dariush vs. Evan Dunham
Will Brooks vs. Nik Lentz
John Moraga vs. Magomed Bibulatov
Matt Schnell vs. Marco Beltran
Walt Harris vs. Mark Godbeer
Bobby Green vs. Lando Vannata
Thales Leites vs. Brad Tavares
