The latest UFC Fight Night offering lacked star power, but the top two fights featured ranked athletes with a little more on the line. That was especially true of the main event, which saw Amanda Lemos put away Marina Rodriguez via TKO in the third. What’s next for Lemos, and the record-setting Neil Magny, following UFC Vegas 64? Here’s our take.

Amanda Lemos

Amanda Lemos moved into the title picture at UFC Vegas 64 with a TKO victory over the streaking Marina Rodriguez. Lemos, a Brazilian knockout artist, has now finished back-to-back ranked opponents since losing to Jessica Andrade in her first main event opportunity. She has called for the next title shot, which would be against the winner of this Saturday’s coming fight between champion Carla Esparza and former champion Zhang Weili, but seeing as she was finished two fights ago by another top contender, those calls seem premature.

That said, Andrade’s next fight is booked as a flyweight bout, leaving the door wide open for Lemos to fight in a number one contender bout next. Atop the rankings sit two fighters that are in the title picture and are not booked currently: Yan Xiaonan, who is coming off her dramatic win over Mackenzie Dern in a main event, and Rose Namajunas, who has been relatively quiet about what is next for her since her disappointing loss to Carla Esparza that lost her the belt.

Rose is a fan favorite but she often takes time off, such as when she left for a year to focus on her mental health after losing the belt the first time around to Andrade. If that is the case this time as well, it would make the most sense for Xiaonan to fight Lemos in a number one contenders fight. It has been six years since a fighter other than Namajunas, Weili, Esparza, Andrade, or Joanna Jędrzejczyk fought for the belt. It would be good to get some fresh blood, such as Xiaonan or Lemos, a title shot to change things up and see new match-ups. Hence, that fight should be the next step for Amanda Lemos.

Lemos’ Next Fight: Yan Xiaonan

Neil Magny

Neil Magny got back to his usual form by using clinch work and wrestling to beat Daniel Rodriguez, a fighter who was new to the rankings, on Saturday. With his first finish since 2018, Magny showed that he still belongs in the top of the division, and he even set a record for most wins in UFC Welterweight history, surpassing the legend Georges St-Pierre.

Ranked slightly above Neil is Brazilian finish artist and action fighter Vicente Luque. Luque is on a little dip, losing his last two fights to opponents in the top six, and so fighting down in the rankings is in order. Both men have been around the division for ages but have never faced off before. The style clash of action striker against grinding clinch specialist would be a unique one, although let it not be said that these men are not well-rounded fighters. The winner of this fight would have a chance to rise in the rankings while the loser may have to defend their ranking against an unranked fighter the next time out.

Magny’s Next Fight: Vicente Luque

Shayilan Nuerdanbieke

Nuerdanbieke defeated veteran Darrick Minner by TKO at UFC Vegas 64 and although an injury to Minner’s leg was a major factor in the result, the fact remains that Nuerdanbieke is now on a three-fight winning streak in one of the toughest divisions in the UFC, having turned things around after losing his promotional debut. Another experienced fighter who is coming off of an impressive victory is Brazilian action fighter Ricardo Ramos, who notched his second spinning back elbow KO in the UFC earlier this year.

Nuerdanbieke and Ramos both come to fight, resulting in entertaining bouts most of the time when they compete. As a result, a fight between the two makes sense from an entertainment standpoint as well as a rankings standpoint, as the winner could make a strong case for a fringe-ranked opponent in the following fight.

Nuerdanbieke’s Next Fight: Ricardo Ramos

Tagir Ulanbekov

This teammate of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev successfully defended his ranking against Nate Maness after losing a controversial fight to Tim Elliott in his preceding fight. The Russian wrestler got his first UFC finish and showed why he deserves to stay in the top-15 at flyweight, where he currently is ranked 15th.

Next up, another ranked opponent seems to be in order. Most of the bottom half of the division is either booked, such as Jeff Molina, has already faced Tagir, such as Tim Elliott, or is perhaps too close to the Nurmagomedov clan to be comfortable fighting each other, such as Muhammad Mokaev. One notable exception stands out, however, in David Dvořák. Dvořák, a former chess master from the Czech Republic, had a disappointing decision loss against Matheus Nicolau in his last fight, and so it’s time for him to fight down in the rankings somewhat. Dvořák is well-rounded and so it will not be an easy feat for Ulanbekov to take him down like he does to everyone else, but there are no easy fights when fighters are in the top 15, especially at a division like flyweight.

Ulanbekov’s Next Fight: David Dvořák

Grant Dawson

Grant Dawson got his second straight third-round rear-naked choke, which was also his third finish in the third round in his last four fights, at UFC Vegas 64 and kept his undefeated record when he stopped Olympic wrestling medalist and former fellow undefeated fighter Mark O. Madsen. In his post-fight interview Dawson called out 14th ranked Tony Ferguson. However, given Tony’s five-fight winless streak and two-fight streak of being finished, the aging star should be given gentler treatment. But Dawson does deserve a ranked or almost ranked opponent, like Carlos Diego Ferreira.

The last three opponents to beat CDF have all used that as a springboard to become ranked in the top ten, forcing Ferreira to settle into a quasi-gatekeeper role. The aging Brazilian still presents a difficult challenge for most everyone at 155 and especially for Dawson, given CDF’s excellent grappling. Overcoming a tough stylistic match-up like that would prove Dawson is ready to be ranked. If not for his disappointing performance and draw with Ricky Glenn two fights ago, perhaps he would be deserving of a true ranked opponent like Drew Dober or the winner of Dan Hooker vs Claudio Puelles.

Dawson’s Next Fight: Carlos Diego Ferreira

UFC Vegas 64 saw Amanda Lemos pull off a moderate upset, serving up the first setback for Marina Rodriguez since a loss to Carla Esparza two years ago.

Had Rodriguez picked up the win, we might be talking title shot. Now, she’ll need to bounce back, but against who? Let’s look at that, and what comes next for the losing side of Saturday’s main card.

Marina Rodriguez

Brazil’s Rodriguez would have been a lock for a title shot had she won this weekend, and Carla Esparza claimed victory next week. Esparza has never really moved the needle, but the rematch pretty much sold itself. Now, however, the strawweight standout needs a bounce back fight.

She has a few options. There’s Jessica Andrade, who she’s never faced, and another former champ in Rose Namajunas. While the rankings will likely be updated later this week, right now, Rodriguez is #3 and Namajunas #1 in the 115lb division. That seems like the fight to make, assuming Namajunas is ready to return sometime in early 2023.

Rodriguez’s next fight: Rose Namajunas

Daniel Rodriguez

UFC Vegas 64 wasn’t a great night if your name was Rodriguez. In the co-main event, Daniel Rodriguez fell to Neil Magny via D’arce choke, part of a historic fight that saw Magny surpass Georges St. Pierre as the UFC’s all-time welterweight wins leader.

“D-Rod” had been coming off a win over Li Jingliang, and had won four straight. He took the Magny fight on a little over a month’s turnaround, so this loss won’t set him back too much. Michel Pereira is ranked #15 at welterweight, one spot behind Rodriguez. Magny was one spot ahead of him. Pereira doesn’t have a fight booked; him and “D-Rod” would be lit.

Rodriguez’s next fight: Michel Pereira

Darrick Minner

Most of the talk surrounding Darrick Minner’s loss to Shayilan Nuerdanbieke has been regarding either his injury (and when it occurred), and/or the suspicious betting activity that transpired in the hours before the fight.

None of that should matter when it comes to Minner’s future, however. What should matter is that Minner dropped his third straight loss in the bout, and is now 2-4 in the UFC overall.

Minner may be on the bubble here. If he sticks around, a match-up with Chase Hooper would be interesting. Both are adept on the ground, with a lot of fun transitions expected. Hooper is coming off a recent loss as well.

Minner’s next fight: Chase Hooper

Nate Maness

Maness looked like death cutting weight for UFC Vegas 64. He wound up caught in a guillotine, suffering his second straight loss. The question now becomes, does Maness stick around flyweight? Saturday was his debut; if he can fine tune the weight cut, he might want to give it another go.

If he does stick around 125lbs, C.J. Vergara just suffered a setback, so the timing works.

Maness’ next fight: C.J. Vergara

Mark O. Madsen

Olympian Mark Madsen (that’s Mark O. Madsen, not Mark O’Madsen, which some people still haven’t twigged to) fell to Grant Dawson on Saturday. The submission loss is the first ever suffered by the Dane, who was unbeatable up to that point. Dawson missed weight for the fight, but the result is the same.

Let’s look to have Madsen bounce back in 2023 with a fight against Mike Davis. This forgoes the UFC’s usual winner vs. winner, loser vs. loser pattern outside of the top names, but Madsen has plenty of upside, and Davis has won three straight.

Madsen’s next fight: Mike Davis

Less than a month after announcing that UFC fighters and their teams could no longer bet on the promotion’s fights, the organization will investigate the unusual circumstances surrounding the Darrick Minner vs. Shayilan Nuerdanbieke fight at UFC Vegas 64.

As noted by TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter, in the span of 90 minutes shortly before the fight, “crazy” line movement shifted the odds from -237 to -362 in favor of Nuerdanbieke.

Some crazy line movement in the Shayilan Nuerdanbieke vs. Darrick Minner fight over the last 90 minutes.

While the Chinese featherweight was already the favorite, that amount of movement in such a short span of time is highly irregular. It became more suspect when Minner injured his knee early in the fight, with Nuerdanbieke quickly capitalizing and securing a TKO finish.

On top of the average odds shifting immediately ahead of the bout, bettors seemed convinced Nuerdanbieke would win inside of a round. The activity was deemed suspicious enough that advance notice was sent to sportsbooks.

In the wake of the controversy, the UFC will conduct a review of the situation, via their betting integrity partner.

“Like many professional sports organizations, UFC works with an independent betting integrity service to monitor wagering activity on our events,” the UFC wrote in a statement provided to ESPN. “Our betting integrity partner, Don Best Sports, a leading global supplier of real-time betting data for North American sporting events, will conduct a thorough review of the facts and report its findings. At this time, we have no reason to believe either of the athletes involved in the bout, or anyone associated with their teams, behaved in an unethical or irresponsible manner.”

Minner’s manager, Andrew Lee of Disorderly Conduct Management, told ESPN that he was “unaware of anything like this.” The outlet cited a source familiar with Minner’s camp who stated that he had sustained the injury ahead of the fight. The fighter’s coach, former UFC athlete James Krause, has yet to comment on the matter. Krause is a well-known betting enthusiast who hosts the 1% Club podcast.

UFC Vegas 64 wasn’t a showstopper on paper (that applies more to next weekend’s UFC 281), but four fighters stood out when all was said and done.

On a night that boasted nine finishes — only two fights went the distance Saturday — Neil Magny, Mario Bautista, Polyana Viana, and Tamires Vidal all picked up $50,000 Performance of the Night bonuses.

No Fight of the Night was awarded Saturday, and given the number of stoppages, that’s not entirely surprising.

Perhaps no finish at UFC Vegas 64 had a bigger impact that Neil Magny’s submission of Daniel Rodriguez. “D-Rod” is a bit of a budding star for the promotion, but veteran Magny locked up a D’Arce choke in the third round of their co-main event welterweight fight. With the win, Magny now holds the record for most wins in UFC welterweight history, at 20, surpassing Georges St. Pierre.

Newcomer Tamires Vidal shocked fans with her octagon debut victory, meanwhile. She also shocked opponent Ramona Pascual, who came in heavy for the bantamweight fight, with a flying knee to end the fight in the opening round. Strawweight Polyana Viana packed plenty of power into her petite frame, knocking out former Invicta FC atomweight champ Jinh Yu Frey.

Finally, Mario Bautista showed some slick ground skills when he pulled off a reverse triangle arm-bar against Benito Lopez.

Amanda Lemos staked her claim for a shot at the strawweight title in the main event of UFC Vegas 64, knocking out the durable Marina Rodriguez.

Amanda Lemos burst onto the scene with impressive finishing ability with six wins and four stoppages in her last seven fights. She looked to continue that streak in the UFC Vegas 64 main event against Marina Rodriguez. Rodriguez was on an impressive four-fight win streak of her own heading into the contest.

Lemos started the fight with a kick up high as she looked to control where the fight was taking place. Simultaneous kicks led to Lemos slipping momentarily. Back on the feet, Lemos threw a leg kick to keep Rodriguez at bay. The strikes were few and far between from both fighters in the first round as both fighters were finding their range, swinging heavy leather every so often. At the end of the round, Lemos attempted a takedown but failed to follow through and ended up on her back with Rodriguez in mount briefly. Lemos scrambled and got to her feet as the bell sounded.

A counter right hand connected cleanly for Lemos to start the second round, the cleanest punch of the fight thus far. A clinch exchange was initiated by Lemos, who then landed a clean trip to take the back of Rodriguez. A rear-naked choke was nearly sunk in, but Rodriguez stayed out of trouble and forced Lemos to take half guard. Lemos rode out the round in top position.

Rodriguez went to the jab to start the third round and Lemos answered with a hook and a jab of her own. A big haymaker then stunned Rodriguez. Lemos followed up with another big shot with a left hand to back Rodriguez up to the fence. A few more punches snuck through to earn the stoppage.

Neil Magny looked as good as ever as he notched his record-setting 20th win in the UFC welterweight division at UFC Vegas 64.

Daniel Rodriguez, ranked 14th in the world coming in, fought one of the most tenured fighters in UFC welterweight history in 13th-ranked Neil Magny in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 64. The pair’s original booking was canceled three weeks ago.

Magny was looking to take the sole top spot as the winningest fighter in the division’s entire history from the legend Georges St-Pierre with a win over D-Rod, while D-Rod looked to improve to 8-1 in the UFC in barely two years since his debut. In fact, Rodriguez is the owner of a welterweight record of his own, having landed the most significant strikes per minute at 8.24, which is exactly 1.5 more than the next highest rate. It would be tough to extend that lead anymore, given that Magny is the toughest opponent the LA native has faced to date. Further, the small cage may favor the wrestling and clinch-heavy game of Neil Magny.

D-Rod came out in round one looking to apply pressure to Neil Magny while Magny looked to use his long limbs to kick and enter clinches. D-Rod denied his first attempt to clinch. D-Rod began to throw his left hand straight to the body of Magny and denied two more clinch attempts from Magny before clinching up himself. Magny then tried to reverse the clinch and get on the outside but D-Rod pivoted out of it and returned to striking. D-Rod smothered Magny’s forward movement with a clinch but Magny reversed it and landed a few knees. However, Rodriguez was proactive about escaping and got back to striking range. Magny landed one big right hand with two minutes left in the round and was catching up in the striking. He had even cut open D-Rod with the jab. Magny used a clinch to grab D-Rod and swivel around to the back before lifting Rodriguez up in the air and throwing him to the ground. However, Rodriguez quickly struggled back to his feet with Magny hanging off of him. Magny got to the back with one hook in and dragged D-Rod back to the mat, onto his knees. Rodriguez finally got back up but Magny had a rear body lock and used it to land an elbow on the break. D-Rod was not happy with that though and he ran forward with hooks, landing a few of them and backing Magny up right before the buzzer.

Two big head kicks from Magny opened the second round. Although they were partially blocked, they also partially landed through the one hand guarding the head of D-Rod. Rodriguez got back on the forward pressure after that though, but he had trouble landing on Magny constantly due to the length and lateral movement of Neil. Still, he landed one hard, clean left straight after a minute and then a hook a few seconds later. Another few moments later a big left sent Magny stumbling back against the fence. The pressure of D-Rod allowed him to keep his back off of the fence and avoid the clinch. Magny recognized this and then ran forward to be on the front foot and clinched up. Rodriguez was able to separate quickly this time, however. Throwing from behind his jab while on the front foot was working for D-Rod and he was able to land strikes more consistently. D-Rod began to somewhat bully Magny, literally pushing him across the cage to start pressuring sequences. A clinch scenario ended quickly as D-Rod escaped after eating a knee around one minute left in the round. Rodriguez responded with a big left straight to the chin. With twenty seconds left Magny rushed forward into the clinch and got a body lock from behind D-Rod but he was unable to do much damage with it before the round ended.

Going into round three it was a close fight. Perhaps Magny had won round one and perhaps Rodriguez had won round two, but scorecards could have been all over the place. D-Rod opened round three with a 1-2 combination that sent Magny backward but Neil quickly got back on the front foot, refusing to be backed against the fence like last round. A big flurry hurt Magny to the body and then rocked him to the head, forcing Magny to shoot a takedown and then pull guard when that failed. D-Rod obliged by getting on top in full guard, but Magny’s guard was hard to bypass so he let him up. Magny was able to clinch up, get the rear body lock, and drag his opponent to the ground with one hook in. From behind Rodriguez, Magny was able to posture up and land good, short strikes. He then swiveled to the front of D-Rod. Rodriguez struggled back to his feet but Magny picked him up and threw him to the ground, this time getting both hooks in. However, Magny got too high and fell off the top. He grabbed a front headlock back on the feet and dragged D-Rod to the ground in a d’Arce choke attempt. The choke was locked up deeply and Rodriguez was forced to tap after struggling a bit. This fight made Magny the winningest fighter in UFC welterweight history and the first to have 20 wins in the division.

Darrick Minner fell victim to an injury after the first kick he threw at UFC Vegas 64 and Shayilan Nuerdanbieke took full advantage with a first-round TKO.

Darrick Minner of the GLORY MMA gym looked to rebound from the first losing streak of his entire decade-long MMA career as he fought China’s own Shayilan Nuerdanbieke at UFC Vegas 64. Nuerdanbieke came in on a two-fight winning streak after dropping his debut in the Octagon.

These two veterans of the sport have extremely extensive resumes. Minner having 39 fights on his record and Nuerdanbieke having 37 fights. It was interesting to see who had more miles left in the tank and whose experience was more valuable.

Darrick Minner came right out of the gate with hard leg kicks. On one of the kicks, he seemed to hurt his leg or foot, perhaps due to his foot landing on the hipbone of Nuerdanbieke. Minner then grabbed at his leg and then limped back to the fence. He threw another kick with the same leg, but then Nuerdanbieke threw a punch and Minner fell to his back. It did not take long for the ground and pound to force referee Mark Smith to step in and stop the fight, giving Nuerdanbieke his third consecutive win.

Tagir Ulanbekov put forth a grappling masterclass at UFC Vegas 64, submitting Nate Maness quickly in the first round to get back in the win column.

Tagir Ulanbekov is part of the wave of impressive Dagestani grapplers taking over the UFC. At UFC Vegas 64, he was looking to earn his third Octagon victory after dropping a decision against Tim Elliott. While seven of his 12 fights before joining the promotion ended with stoppages, all three of his fights had gone the full 15 minutes since his debut.

Nate Maness was making noise in the Octagon heading into the event with a 3-1 record. Stoppages against Luke Sanders and Tony Gravely had put him on the map, but a loss to Umar Nurmagomedov slowed his ascent. Following his first UFC loss, he was given another Dagestani beast to try and tame.

Tagir Ulanbekov wasted no time, immediately taking Maness down near the fence. Ulanbekov was controlling the fight from guard as Maness was trying to work his way up. Maness found a window about 90 seconds into the round and attempted to stand up. Ulanbekov followed him up and got an arm under the chin. He began cranking a high elbow guillotine. Maness’ resistance forced Ulanbekov to switch to more of a neck crank, which is what pulled out the tap from Maness.

Ulanbekov is teammates with Maness’ last opponent, Umar Nurmagomedov, and thanked him for showing him the right gameplan during training camp.

Grant Dawson put forth the finest performance of his career at UFC Vegas 64, defeating Olympic wrestler Mark Madsen with wrestling of his own.

Highly-touted wrestling prospects Grant Dawson and Mark Madsen faced off at UFC Vegas 64. Dawson came in with a bright future and only one loss and one draw on his record. Meanwhile, Madsen entered the fight with an undefeated record, several Greco-Roman wrestling World Championships medals, and an Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling silver medal for his country, Denmark. However, he needed to start making a run for the title quickly at 38 years old.

His opponent was ten years younger; Dawson, now at a new gym in Kill Cliff MMA, is known for his rear-naked chokes. On the other hand, Madsen is obviously known for his Greco-Roman style takedowns. As a result, it was interesting to see if their wrestling would cancel out and to see who would have the advantage if indeed it did hit the ground. Additionally, the pound-and-a-half weight miss from Dawson could be a factor, though he did take the fight on short notice.

The fighters came out and Madsen quickly rushed forward and landed a flurry of strikes that sat Dawson awkwardly down to his butt. Dawson tried to get a takedown from there but Madsen stuffed it and landed hard hammerfists. Then Dawson tried again. This time was able to get in deep on the hips of his foe with a folk-style double leg, something Madsen would not have seen in Greco-Roman wrestling, and completed it.

Now on the mat, Dawson quickly used his grappling to pass guard and take the back of the Olympian. He was able to get both hooks in and then switched to a tight body triangle, the position that Dawson specializes in. Minutes passed as the pair handfought and Dawson tried to sneak a choke under the chin. Madsen was so occupied with staying out of the submission that he was unable to do anything to clear the body triangle and get back to his feet. His defensive strategy paid off though as he was able to survive for more than four minutes until the bell rang. Despite reacting badly to damage early on, Dawson won the round with his effective grappling and a smattering of ground and pound. That early strike from Madsen saved him from giving up a 10-8, surely.

The second round started with cagey striking. Dawson tried for a low single leg but Madsen was able to pull away and get out once. The second time Dawson succeeded in pushing Madsen to the fence and getting a better grip on the single leg. Madsen almost succeeded in kicking out a few times, Dawson only had a grip a few inches above the foot, but he stayed on it like a dog with a bone and was able to get Madsen to the mat. Dawson settled in half guard but Madsen was able to scoot and get his back up to the fence. However, halfway through the round, Dawson flattened the Dane out again and got back in half guard. This round, Madsen was able to keep from giving up his back, but was unable to get back to his feet without turning his back to Dawson. So, once again, Mark Madsen stayed in a bottom position for the vast majority of the round. His BJJ had clearly not caught up to his wrestling as his guard was quite passable and he was unable to use his legs to make space to get back to his feet.

Grant Dawson opened the final round with kicks, to the legs and teeps to the body. He then got a bit fancy with a spinning back kick to the body even. One leg kick took Madsen off his feet and the follow-up punch seemed to stun Madsen. Dawson kept slamming leg kicks into Madsen, who had no defense for them. After just over a minute, Dawson landed one that made Madsen fall to the ground. The Kill Cliff MMA prospect got on top of Madsen once more, and then switched to a back take. Exhausted and beat up, Madsen was unable to defend the choke this time and Grant Dawson quickly locked up his patented rear-naked choke, continuing his impressive undefeated run in the UFC and ending the career-long undefeated record of his opponent. Dawson was so impressive that this could even earn him a top-fifteen opponent in his next fight.

Miranda Maverick earned her second win of 2022 and did not leave any doubts, controlling Shanna Young for 15 minutes at UFC Vegas 64.

Shanna Young just barely made weight for her UFC Vegas 64 fight with Miranda Maverick. The pair entered a rematch from their Invicta days as part of UFC Vegas 65 event. One day prior, Young had needed three attempts and a haircut to make the flyweight limit — but make weight she did.

The featured prelim opened up with some forward pressure from Maverick clipping Young straightaway with a left hook. The 24-year-old was the one doing most of the work and began chopping the leg of Young. Young began landing a few nice countershots as Maverick was coming into her distance, but they were unable to phase Maverick. Maverick attempted a few high kicks but as she missed her attempts, she was getting popped with one-two combos. Despite the betting line being completely one-sided, round 1 was extremely close and competitive up until Maverick scored herself a takedown. From there, she did extremely well to transition into full mount and unleashed some ground-and-pound in the dying embers of the round.

The expectation coming into the second round was that Maverick was going to immediately come out with a level change due to her success there in round one. It took just under a minute and a half for her to do exactly that. Shortly after securing another takedown, Maverick began trying to transition into full mount straightaway, staying active in the meantime. In a brief scramble, Maverick found herself with one hook in whilst trying to secure Young’s back completely. The 24-year-old got too high up on the back trying to force the position, and lost it completely, with Young getting the fight back to the feet. The fight didn’t stay standing for long and Maverick tripped Young and transitioned straight into full mount, letting some heavy ground-and-pound go. Again though, it came too late in the round.

Early in round three, Maverick landed a nice sidekick to the face of Young, followed by a left cross, straight down the pipe. Again, Maverick exposed the wrestling side of Young’s game, getting the fight to the mat once again. This time though, she got her down almost directly in the center of the Octagon, giving her more space to transition. Some more ground domination for Maverick saw a wild scramble, with Maverick finishing in full mount. Young did well to see the fight out, with Maverick scoring yet another dominant win.

Miranda Maverick def. Shanna Young by Unanimous Decision (30-26 x3)
