An overly enthusiastic Pedro Munhoz jumped out of the octagon at UFC 235 — and it has cost him. As per an MMA Fighting report, Munhoz has been hit with a fine of $2,500 from the Nevada State Athletic Commission following the incident, which happened last month after his bout with Cody Garbrandt. Counting attorney’s fees, the total bill comes to $2,827.06.

Munhoz is currently under temporary suspension by the NSAC. A suspension that will not be lifted until the bill is paid. The good news is, the fight picked up a Fight of the Night bonus, earning Munhoz an extra $50,000. So paying the fine should not be an issue.

While nothing came of the incident, Munhoz (and other fighters) were warned in advance not to leave the octagon under any circumstances. That’s no doubt a response to the actions of Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in the same venue. The UFC lightweight champion took flight after vanquishing Conor McGregor, leaping out of the cage to attack his corner. In the process, the Dagestani fighter risked sparking a riot, or at the very least injuring onlookers. That infraction earned him a half-million dollar fine, and nine month suspension.

Jon Jones dominated from bell to bell in his fight with Anthony Smith at UFC 235. With the exception of an illegal knee where he was deducted two points in round four, Jones took every single round with ease. Jones, since his return from his second USADA suspension, has dominated in both fights, dispatching of Alexander Gustaffson in the third round, and then winning 48-44 on all three judges’ scorecards last Saturday.

Following the fight, there were a couple of options brought up as possible opponents, from the likes of Jon and his team, as well as feedback from Dana White himself. We are going to take a look at some of those options. Honorable mention goes to Dominick Reyes, one of the light heavyweight division’s brightest prospects, but he is scheduled to fight Volkan Oezdemir in London.

Thiago Santos

Thiago Santos is a lot like Anthony Smith in his rise through the UFC’s 205-pound division. Following a win over Kevin Holland, Santos made a change and went up in weight to 205 pounds. Since moving up last August, he’s won three fights in a row against Eryk Anders, Jimi Manuwa, and Jan Blachowicz. The last win, which was one week before Jones’, was seen as a potential title-eliminator fight.

Santos was brought up as a potential challenger to Jones by Dana White following UFC 235, and while some may scoff at the idea, you can make a good argument that Santos deserves the shot at the title. Santos is one of the most active fighters in the sport, and has the second most knockouts throughout the promotion’s history, second only to Vitor Belfort.

Santos presents some interesting challenges for Jones, as he likely has the most knockout power of anyone to fight Jones. He also will likely throw caution to the wind to get in against Jones, something that we figured Anthony Smith would do, but didn’t. We’ve seen Santos do it on multiple occasions as well, and it has gone well for him.

Santos is the most deserving contender to fight Jones for his light-heavyweight strap, but sometimes in the UFC, “deserving” doesn’t matter for much.

Brock Lesnar

Following Jon Jones’ victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, he got on the microphone and called out former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Lesnar responded back with some talk after the fight, and it seemed like it was bound to happen. However, after the fight, Jones would test positive for the turinabol and was suspended 18 months for the infraction. Following his positive test, the talk of the bout went on hold, and talk of a Lesnar fight with Jones’ rival Daniel Cormier emerged.

However, that talk has now returned, following his victory over Anthony Smith, Jones once again displayed a desire to fight Lesnar. This fight makes a lot of sense for both men, as they’re the two biggest draws at their respective weight classes, and in the age of money fights, it makes a lot of sense from a cash standpoint.

However, it doesn’t seem the UFC is on board. Dana White shot the fight down in the post-fight press conference, saying that Lesnar vs. Cormier is the fight to make and that he wants to make the fight for DC as his retirement bout. Now while the Jones and Lesnar fight can happen following the DC fight, it appears to be on hold for the moment.

Johnny Walker

Johnny Walker has emerged as one of the UFC’s rising stars. He’s become a fan-favorite and has shown knockout power in spades. After winning a contract on the Brazil Contender Series, he was matched up with Khalil Rountree, who himself had a fair bit of hype behind him as he had just knocked out Gokhan Saki at UFC 226.

Walker made the most of the big fight, as he knocked out Rountree with a vicious elbow inside of one round. He was then matched up with Justin Ledet in February, who he knocked out with a spinning backfist in only 15 seconds. Following a win over Ledet, he was moved into the top 15 and stepped in on short notice at UFC 235 against Misha Cirkunov. He then knocked out Cirkunov in 36 seconds with a flying knee.

Following both of their victories, one of Jon’s coaches, Brandon Gibson mentioned Walker as a potential challenger for Jones. However, Dana White shied away from that idea at the post-fight press conference, saying that they’re going to take it slow with Walker and his development. It makes sense as you don’t want to throw the 26-year-old in there too soon.

Maybe one day we will see Walker-Jones. However, it likely won’t be next for Jones.

At UFC 235 this past weekend in Las Vegas, Johnny Walker returned to the octagon exactly one month after his technical knockout victory over Justin Ledet, where he would stop Canadian standout Misha Cirkunov with a flying knee. Untouched in his fight, it was the post-fight celebration that would cause Walker the most problems, dislocating his shoulder while attempting the ‘worm’.

Per Ariel Helwani of ESPN, “Johnny Walker just got his MRI results back. Per his manager, he has a mild shoulder injury. He’ll need four weeks of rehab.” Walker’s humerus head dislocated from the glenoid cavity, which almost immediately popped back into place, but a dislocation can result in further complications, sometimes the tearing of tendons, muscles, etc. Lucky for him, there wasn’t any significant damage done.

While four weeks doesn’t seem like a long time, with taking no damage against Cirkunov on the preliminaries of UFC 235, the Brazilian native could have made himself available sooner should anyone fall out of the up-and-coming events this month.

Additionally, upon his return, Helwani says Walker and his team are eyeing a potential fight with Alexander Gustafsson in Stockholm.

‘The Mauler’ Gustafsson is coming off of a third-round TKO loss to current 205lbs champion, Jon Jones, who also competed this past weekend at UFC 235. For years now, Gustafsson has been highly ranked in the light heavyweight division, and would pose as a true test for the rising star, Johnny Walker, who seems to be walking through everyone put in front of him, late notice and all. While Walker says he would be ready for the title holder ‘Bones’ Jones, realistically, as of today (March 5th) Walker is ranked #15 in the division, and will have to prove himself at least a couple more times before we see him in title contention. What better way to jump the rankings than call out and take on the #2 guy? With success in getting past Gustafsson, potentially, we could see this young talent at the top in no time.

More recently, Dana White took interest in Thiago Santos getting the next crack at gold. Currently on a four-fight win streak, Santos has knocked out his last three opponents, his latest victim being Jan Błachowicz in late February.

No date or opponent has been confirmed for Walker’s return, but surely everyone can agree he’s a pleasure to watch in the octagon, and a growing fan-favorite every time he competes.

Las Vegas, NV — Want to know the toll being a professional fighter takes on the body? Look no further than Maycee Barber. Outwardly a healthy, robust figure, Barber’s body hit a road block after her last bout in the fall. Now, heading into UFC Nashville, she’s moving to flyweight, hoping that her body will once again respond the way it should.

Barber will be taking on J.J Aldrich in Nashville, a fight she told reporters including Cageside Press backstage at UFC 235 is “probably the toughest match-up that I’ve had.”

“I’m really excited about it. Especially since we’re both moving up in weight class,” said Barber. The pair have even trained together before, back when Barber was in her teens, prior even to her amateur bouts. She sees Aldrich as having excellent fundamentals. But more importantly, her new home in terms of weight has her feeling better physically. “I feel good, I’m being fueled a lot better than I was in my past camps. I’m definitely looking forward to being able to perform off of that.”

So how did the 6-0 Barber find herself forced to move up in weight at such a young age? Just twenty, Barber is seen by many as a bright future star in the sport. Strawweight has been her home. Until now. “All my past fights at 115, every time the cut got harder,” she said on Saturday in Las Vegas. Even though “I started out on a low calorie diet.”

At UFC Denver, she defeated Hannah Cifers. “I went out to the PI the day after my fight in November. They came back and, you know all the testing they do out here, that’s a incredible too. That’s a huge benefit to all of us fighters. But yeah, they did some tests, and it came back I had a decreased metabolism of like fifty or sixty percent. It was really bad.” Adding to the issue, “I had lost a lot of female hormones, things just weren’t working right.”

The choice was made to move to flyweight at that point. “It was a joint decision that we made. I want to perform better, and I also know that I need to be fueling my training.”

“25 is not necessarily where I saw myself, in the division,” she admitted, “but I’m there, and I’ll fight there. I just wanted to fight, so if we’re going to keep me getting healthier, and I want to fight, then 25 is going to be it until probably a year from now, when I can go back to 115.”

It might shock some that she’d consider going back at all. As to why the year time frame is required, Barber said that “I think it’s going to take that long to revert my body back into a healthy state.”

She has found herself at this point because, at least in part, “I was put on a 500 calorie diet for a good ten weeks, a long time. And I was training four times a day. It was super bad, and I never got reversed out of that diet.”

“So every time, I would get right back into a fight,” she continued, “and I would want to fight again. So we had another cut, and we had another cut, and I just never had the ability to go back.” Her metabolism slowed as a result, burning just 900 calories a day. A normal at rest number would be 1500 calories, she pointed out. And for a high level athlete, that is especially abnormal.

“When I went to the PI, my body was only burning 900. Which, you can’t eat above 900 if you’re body’s not burning above 900, because you’re going to put on weight.” Obviously a problem for a fighter in the UFC’s smallest weight class. “That’s a long, tricky process, and it took me years to get in that position, and it’s going to take me a year or so to get out of that.”

Las Vegas, NV – Attending UFC 235, Michelle Waterson is back on the upswing after losses to Rose Namajunas and Tecia Torres by defeating Cortney Casey and Felice Herrig consecutively. The wins have earned Waterson a fight with former top contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz, who is looking to recover from a brutal KO loss to Jessica Andrade. “The Karate Hottie” is well aware of the challenge ahead:

“My camp has been really good. We’ve been wanting to fight Karolina Kowalkiewicz for a while. She’s fought the best of the best and a fight against her would get me to where I need to be, to fight for the belt which is my ultimate goal. I’m very excited. I know I have a lot on my hands. She’s just as well-rounded and creative as me so I’m really looking forward to the fight.”

While her fight will take place on ESPN, Waterson is looking to get involved with more than just fighting on the network, as she did on FOX Sports.

“I would love to get behind the desk. It’s very beneficial to me as a fighter because I’m forced to break down fighters outside of my weight class and I think that helps. Analyzing other fighters and breaking their skills down helps you break your own skills down and reevaluate the things you do.”

Waterson’s daughter Araya became a beloved figure following the release of the Waterson-based documentary Fight Mom. But unfortunately, she couldn’t make it out to the fights this time around.

“My daughter is a huge part of our camp. She knows my goals, and I guess to her I’m already a champion, so anything extra is just extra credit. She’s always with us. She’d be here right now if she could but she has school and she has to sell Girl Scout cookies at home so she has her hands full right now.”

The former Invicta FC atomweight champion moved on from the division in order to sign with the UFC, but if the promotion adopted the weight class, it would be an enticing opportunity for Waterson.

“I would never close any doors to an opportunity. But I feel that being able to fight at 115 gives me the opportunity to spend more time on technique, more time on my gameplan, rather than my diet, cutting weight, adding extra miles to my training camp. I’d rather spend more time training technique and sparring rather than roadwork. But, if the opportunity presented itself and I couldn’t turn it down, I wouldn’t say no.”

Waterson added an anecdote to reaffirm how hard it would be to convince her to cut down to atomweight again:

“The last time I cut to atomweight, the doctor that was checking for my pulse couldn’t find it for an hour. It’s dangerous. Your fight career is short-lived anyway, you might as well do it in a healthy way. It would have to be worth my while to go back to 105. They can make it worth my while,” Waterson laughed.

On the topic of weight-cutting, Waterson’s teammate, Diego Sanchez, has moved up to welterweight and won on Saturday against Mickey Gall, which has been enjoyable to watch for the strawweight contender.

“Diego [Sanchez] is just special. He has hit a point in his life where he is doing it again because he loves it. By him not having to cut the weight, he’s able to just enjoy the process of it. I think that’s why he’s having such great success.”

It hasn’t been all good times at Jackson-Wink though, as there was a well-publicized feud between one of the star pupils, Donald Cerrone, and the coaches. While Cerrone has fluorished in the cage in spite of this, it has been hard on the camp.

“It’s hard because we’re all friends. We’ve built friendships throughout the years. I’ve known Donald [Cerrone] forever. He’s the one who brought me into Jackson’s before I even moved out to Albuquerque. The truth is, I’m still friends with him. And the coaches are father-figures to me, they’re mentors to me. So I stay neutral, I’m friends with everybody and I wish everybody the best. But it hasn’t affected me. The gym is still running and there’s good camaraderie amongst me and my teammates and my coaches. We’re having a good camp.”

The strawweight title will be fought for at UFC 237 between champion Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade. Having fought Namajunas in the past, Waterson gave her thoughts on the bout.

“It’s pretty interesting. Rose is just in a different place mentally when she does decide to fight. She has a very strong mental game. She has the reach, she has the creativity to pick her shots and keep Andrade away. I think the determining factor is if Andrade will be able to break that initial barrier, get in close and get the body clinch and do those amazing wrestling takedowns that she’s so good at. I think that’s the determining factor. And if Rose can keep her off for five rounds. It’s a five-round fight. That’s exhausting, keeping someone off for five rounds but Joanna [Jedrzejczyk] did it.”

Las Vegas, NV — Thiago Santos was among the fighters who turned up at UFC 235 over the weekend. While assisting a team mate, he was also keeping a close eye on the main event of Jones vs. Smith. Santos is the man UFC President Dana White likes as the next contender at 205lbs.

“I came here to assist Polyana Viana and also to watch the main event to see who could be my next opponent,” he said back stage on Saturday, with Cageside Press in attendance. “I did what I needed to do to get here and there’s nothing in my path. It’s my time now.”

What he did to get to this point, of course, was win three straight fights after moving up from middleweight. If that sounds familiar, well, it’s the same trajectory Anthony Smith took to get to his own title fight with Jon Jones.

For Santos, it’s been big finishes of Eryk Anders, Jimi Manuwa, and Jan Blachowicz. Overall, he’s 8-1 in his last nine.

Santos also got to meet Mike Tyson while in town. “[Mike Tyson] is an inspiration to me. He is a knockout artist like I am and it was an incredible moment for me.”

Speaking of knockout artists, fellow Brazilian Johnny Walker has been on quite a tear, and picked up his third straight UFC win at UFC 235. “Beautiful victory,” Santos observed. “He’s doing a great job. Yeah someday at the right time, sure, but it’s a little early to be putting him at that level [in the title picture].”

Walker has said he’s willing to wait for a title shot, in no rush less than a year into his UFC tenure. Which is one less contender for Santos to compete with.

Another fighter Santos commented on Saturday was Colby Covington. Covington was all over Vegas this weekend, in an altercation with new champ Kamaru Usman and his manager Ali Abdelaziz, and hounding Dana White for a title shot. “He’s doing what he has to do,” Santos observed. “He’s the interim champion and he’s trying to dig in and get his shot. That’s what he needs to do.”

It doesn’t look like Santos will have to do the same. While Jon Jones was non-committal about who comes next after this weekend, Dana White appears to be keen on booking Santos in the next light heavyweight title fight.

Las Vegas, NV — Johnny Walker is one of the best stories in the UFC at the moment. The Brazilian with the near-permanent smile has had three fights, three wins, and three Performance of the Night bonuses. In three fights, he has barely gone past three minutes of cage time. In fact, he took more damage celebrating at UFC 235 (dislocating his shoulder doing The Worm) than he did in the fight.

The good news is, Walker was feeling better backstage on Saturday. “It’s okay. It’s gone back to the right place,” he said of his dislocated shoulder.

And while Dana White would say later that night that he hoped Walker would drop the celebration, the Brazilian actually suggested he needed to work on it. “No I have to train more because I don’t train the celebration,” he said. “Everything I train, I do well. I train my flying knee, I train my punch. But I don’t train my celebration and it happened like this.”

Heading into UFC 235, Walker told Cageside Press that he was in no rush to get to a title shot. He reiterated that when we spoke to him again during Saturday’s media scrum following his bout. “I’m ok [with not rushing to title]. I need to test myself. I need more fights, I need to fight three rounds. I need to check my ground game, my jiu-jitsu, my wrestling. I need more fights, more experience.”

“I still want to [fight next month],” he added. “Of course, I can fight with just one hand.” We think he’s joking. Probably.

He’s certainly eager to get back in, however. In part because he’d expected a longer fight Saturday. “I wanted to fight three rounds,” he said, “but finishing in the first is okay. I saw where he tried to land the punch and when he wanted to go for my legs so I just went for the knee.”

Walker also deemed the experience of fighting in Las Vegas “okay,” but added “I don’t go out too much because I have to cut my weight, train, diet. I only stayed in my room and trained, I didn’t see too many things. Today and tomorrow, I will go enjoy a little bit.”

“I want to go to the Cirque du Soleil. I’ve never been.”

As for who will be next, the light heavyweight said “Just give me the names, send me the location. I’ll be there.”

While Walker his holding off on title talk for now, it’s not because he feels he’s not ready for the champ. He just wants to do things right. “I’m ready [for Jon Jones], but when I get more experience, I’ll be more sure that I’ll get the belt,” he explained. “When I fight against him with more experience then I’m sure I can beat him. For now, I need to take my time, rest, train more, take other fights, maybe three or four more, then I’ll be ready.”

Las Vegas, NV – Zabit Magomedsharipov proved he was the real deal at UFC 235 by defeating tested veteran Jeremy Stephens with a sound performance over 15 minutes. The Russian was involved in a tense build-up to the fight, and it boiled over into some extracurricular activities at the end of the second round. After Zabit stood up from top, there was a little shoving exchange. But nothing to worry about, the rising featherweight star said post-fight.

“When you fight, sometimes you don’t hear the bell. So maybe things got a little heated, there was tension, but it’s all emotions in there. Overall, it’s ok,” Zabit told journalists including Cageside Press backstage following his UFC 235 victory.

On tension with Stephens, he added that “there wasn’t much going on. He was posting online on social media saying this and that. There was nothing personal, he did well. It’s all for interest, to hype up the fight I think.”

Still, weigh-ins were tense. “To be honest, I don’t remember exactly what he said, there’s a lot of noise in there. I think it was something like, ‘What’s your name? Where are you from?’ Something like that.” There is little question that Stephens knows Zabit Magomedsharipov’s name now.

The Dagestani-Russian fighter broke out all his tricks against Stephens: spinning attacks. A showtime kick. Overall, he was happy with how the fight played out, he said. “In general, I’m very happy with my performance. I’m 5-0 now and the last fight was a good performance against a top opponent so I’m happy about my performance. I needed this win.”

“I knew Jeremy was a tough opponent from the beginning,” he continued. “He’s top six. I was ready for everything. I had a good camp for three months back home in Dagestan. My coach Mansur Uchakaev and other coaches back home helped me a lot. Then I came to the US for a month and a half. The coaches here, Mark Henry and Ricardo Almeida, did a lot of work so we approached this fight with a lot of preparation.”

“I am ready either for my next fight to be for the title or to fight the winner of Jose Aldo vs. Alexander Volkanovski.” And if you think that’s shooting high, Zabit would beg to disagree.

“My personal opinion on Max Holloway is that 155 is a bit of a tough test for him. His natural weight division is 145, I think he’ll come back to 145.” And when ‘Blessed’ does come back down, “I’m ready, and as I said earlier, I’m ready for Max Holloway. He’s a good opponent for me stylistically, so he’s a good match-up for me.”

“Of course, I’m going back to Dagestan in a few days. Then it will be the same routine. Go back, train for my next opponent at home, then back here two months in advance to work with the coaches here. I like working here, my second home is here.”

While fellow Dagestani and UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has been vocal about not fighting in Vegas, Zabit is of a different mind. “It’s very convenient for me to fight in Vegas because my manager lives here. The Performance Institute is here. They treat me well here,” he said Saturday, “so everything is at the highest level. Without a doubt, Vegas is a good place for me to fight. All the conditions, everything is top-notch and high-end.”

Las Vegas, NV — The UFC’s Performance Institute has been a boon for a lot of fighters. For one fighter on the UFC 235 card, however, it was a life saver. That would be Weili Zhang, the UFC strawweight who got the better of Tecia Torres Saturday night.

Now 3-0 in the UFC, and on a nineteen fight win streak, the paces has quickened for the Chinese fighter. “It’s been fast. I feel like I’m fighting back-to-back. Just so fast after three fights,” she said back stage in Las Vegas on Saturday, speaking to media outlets including Cageside Press.

She has her goals for what comes next, which includes the top ten of the division. “Definitely top ten. I’m only top ten now, but my final goal is to be the champion of this division. Being the champion is the dream of every fighter. It is the way that fighters can prove themselves. There is an old saying in Chinese, ‘The soldier who doesn’t want to be general is not a good soldier.'” Zhang then added, “I want to be a general.”

On her readiness to be champion, Zhang said that “I feel like anytime, just give me the chance because I’m prepared all the time.”

Preparation for UFC 235, however, came via the UFC PI, when Zhang’s striking coach was unable to make the trip to Las Vegas. “I trained at the UFC Performance Institute and that was such a great place with great facilities and everything, they will take care of you,” she said. “All you have to do is get there and train. It was a very good experience for me and I also made a lot of friends out there. I was really upset that my stand-up coach got rejected on his visa so he didn’t actually make it. So when we got to the PI we met a very good coach, Matthew Jolly, he helped me a lot and held pads for me. I appreciate him.”

While at the Performance Institute, Zhang was able to train with Olympic Athletes. “We are in a different field of sport. I look up at them and think, ‘They look so badass.’ It’s the same thing when they look at me, ‘I’m so badass.'”

“I’m willing to set an example for all female athletes and female fans to bring them into this sport,” she later added. “I want to extinguish the thought in their mind that MMA is violent. It’s not violent. So hopefully I can set a good example for the upcoming young fighters, especially female fighters.”

In the coming years, the UFC Performance Institute model will be rolled out to other nations, among them Mexico and China. Weili Zhang is hopeful that the Chinese edition, expected to be far larger than the one located in Las Vegas, will be a great benefit to Chinese martial artists. And those from abroad.

“Everybody knows they’re building a Performance Institute in Shanghai,” she said, “so I think that international fighters and fighters from China can learn a lot when they get there from kung-fu and other traditional Chinese martial arts. We have a lot of martial art combat principles that would help them a lot.”

On a night where the main and co-main events fizzled rather than sizzled, the UFC looked further down the card for its bonus winners. At UFC 235, the PPV opener took home Fight of the Night, while a pair of fighters on the televised prelims captured the Performance of the Night bonuses.

To be fair to the main event of Jon Jones vs. Anthony Smith, it was far from the worst title fight ever. Smith simply seemed to have nothing more than heart for Jones. And heart wasn’t enough. Kamaru Usman vs. Tyron Woodley, meanwhile, will best be remembered as the night Woodley didn’t show up.

Who did show up? Pedro Munhoz. He shared Fight of the Night honors with opponent Cody Garbrandt. Munhoz engaged in a firefight with the ex-champ towards the end of the first round. It was a lengthy exchange Garbrandt had initiated, and he paid for it. With the pair standing and trading, it was the Team Alpha Male fighter who hit the ground first. Munhoz had earned the biggest win of his career, while Garbrandt fell to 0-3 over his past three fights.

Yet for the time it lasted, just under a round, Munhoz vs. Garbrandt was riveting.

So was Diego Sanchez vs. Mickey Gall. Gall would come to regret his callout of the Ultimate Fighter 1 winner, after Sanchez turned the fight into a nightmare for the young welterweight. Gall tired quckly, something Sanchez essentially never does. With plenty left in the tank, he dominated from top position, earning a TKO finish in the second. He also earned a Performance of the Night award.

Johnny Walker’s feelgood story continued at UFC 235. It also earned him his third straight Performance of the Night award. Sending Misha Cirkunov to the canvas off a flying knee, the TKO was yet another first round finish for Walker. The Brazilian took more damage in his post fight celebration that he did in the fight, and after improving his current win streak to nine, he’ll need another step up in competition.

All four bonus-winning fighters will earn $50,000 for their efforts.
