Luke Rockhold got off to a strong start at Saturday’s Misfits Boxing event, where he faced fellow UFC alum Darren Till in the night’s main event.

Misfits Boxing 22 saw the promotion’s inaugural bridgerweight (super cruiserweight) on the line between the two well-traveled mixed martial artists. While Till had made a successful foray into boxing previously, earning a couple of wins including one over yet another UFC talent, Darren Stewart, Rockhold was another matter. He’d been brutally stopped by Mike Perry under the BKFC banner, though he had notched a win for Karate Combat.

Perhaps he should stick to something other than the sweet science. Rockhold looked good early on against Till, controlling the action throughout the opening frame, at least until the end of the round. There, a left hand clipped the ex-UFC and Strikeforce champ, and he’d end up on the canvas, though he beat the count to his feet. Things took an even more drastic turn by the third, however, with Rockhold caught in the corner.

Till peppered his opponent with lefts and rights, a couple connecting, but it was a solid left that sent Rockhold to the floor once again, slumped over awkwardly. This time, there was absolutely no way he was getting back to his feet.

Darren Till gets the belt, Luke Rockhold gets slept, with many suggesting he hang up the gloves for good following the fight.

A team-based “league” (all teams being owned and operated by the promotion), the GFL is expected to launch in April, with New York vs. Los Angeles being the first card on deck. On Thursday, promotion officials began announcing the first match-ups, with two revealed: a middleweight rematch between Chris Weidman and Luke Rockhold, dating back to their UFC title fight, and at light heavyweight, ex-UFC champ and PRIDE legend Shogun Rua facing Yoel Romero.

No exact date or venue has been announced for the April GFL card, which was previously announced as taking place in Los Angeles. With the match-ups announced including Shogun (Team Brazil) and Romero (Team Miami), as well as Weidman (New York) versus Rockhold (Los Angeles), it’s also unclear whether both will be placed on the April show, or saved for later in the GFL season.

Lots of question, few answers. Still, the fights make sense from both a promotional and matchmaking perspective: all involve older fighters, none can really be seen as a mismatch, but all are marquee names. After Luke Rockhold defeated Chris Weidman to claim middleweight gold at UFC 194 in 2015, a rematch was scheduled, only for “The All-American” to pull out of the fight. Michael Bisping stepped in on short notice, and shocked fans by knocking the champ out inside of a round.

Rockhold vs. Weidman 2 never came to fruition. Luke Rockhold has won just a single fight in MMA since, against David Branch in 2017. He did defeat kickboxer turned mixed martial artist at Karate Kombat 45 last April.

Weidman stuck with the UFC all the way to the end of 2024, but suffered a horrific broken leg in a fight with Uriah Hall in 2021 that put him on the shelf for two years.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua retired in 2023 after losing three straight under the UFC banner. His opponent, Yoel Romero, is the only fighter among the four names announced to find any real success in MMA in recent years. He’s 3-1 in his last four fights, with the lone loss coming against Vadim Nemkov in a Bellator light heavyweight title fight.

GFL founder Darren Owen appeared on The Fighter and the Kid podcast to promote the new league, with that episode dropping on Thursday in conjunction with the fight announcements.

Luke Rockhold has another fight booked in his post-UFC combat sports campaign.

The 39-year-old former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion has signed with Karate Combat and is scheduled to make his KC debut against Joe Schilling on April 20 at 195lbs.

Both Rockhold and Schilling announced that they would be the taking part in the main event of Karate Combat 45 in Dubai on social media, with the bout later being confirmed by multiple media outlets.

Rockhold last fought in the UFC in August of 2022 in a crowd-pleasing unanimous decision loss to Paulo Costa before retiring in his post-fight speech. Luke would return to professional fighting and compete in April of 2023, taking on Mike Perry at BKFC 41, where he was TKO’d in the second round. Luke Rockhold also had a grappling match that was scheduled against grappling-ace, Craig Jones, for September of 2023 that was cancelled.

Luke, who has seemingly been in talks with KC for some period of time, will be looking for his first win in pro combat sports since September of 2017 against David Branch.

Joe Schilling is 4-6 as a pro in MMA and is a six-fight Bellator veteran. Joe is also a veteran of the Glory kickboxing promotion and sports a 23-9 pro kickboxing record having last competed in 2017. Schilling, now 40 years old, last fought in 2019, when he was KO’d by Tony Johnson at Bellator 229.

Schilling has had two fights cancelled since he was last in action nearly five years ago.

Miami, FL — Former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold was on hand in Miami for Karate Combat 40 over the weekend, and teased — ever so slightly — the possibility of competing for the promotion.

Rockhold had broadcast duties to attend to at the event, but spoke to Cageside Press about life as a free agent, which took him to a bare-knuckle fight with Mike Perry in BKFC back in April.

“You get the best of all worlds. I can fight where ever I want, and what appeals to me the most is where I’m going to go,” Rockhold said regarding free agency. “The opponent, the stage, the situation, and of course the payday. It’s looking good.”

Of course, being present at Karate Combat 40 brings up the idea of Rockhold fighting for the promotion, a full-contact Karate league which has blown up over the past year or so.

“We’ve talked. We’ve talked. You never know. Talk is talk,” Rockhold said. “Talk is talk but I like to walk the walk. We’re talking. We’re not walking yet, but maybe we can get to run soon.”

“We’re setting kick records though. Coming off the couch, easy,” Rockhold added.

Being present at the event, however, working alongside fellow fighting greats like Bas Rutten, allowed Luke Rockhold to get a feel for the organization.

“I just want to see it first hand, and I want to get a chance to really feel this whole thing out. See if it’s really a part of me, if I want to be a part of it.”

Watch our full interview with Luke Rockhold above.

Dana White is playing up a fight between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk that will probably (and should probably) never happen, while AEW owner Tony Khan has debunked a report that had him involved in talks to purchase Bellator MMA. It’s Sunday, here’s your Sunday MMA Quick Hits!

Justin Tafa wants his win bonus

Justin Tafa’s night was cut short at UFC Jacksonville when Austen Lane inadvertently poked him in the eye, rendering him unable to continue.

Following what was ruled a No Contest, Tafa went online to petition for his win bonus. You can’t blame him, really. That eye poke was downright nasty.

I deserve my Win bonus that’s a DQ man pic.twitter.com/CMNdW0ZUtL

Sadibou Sy wheel kick launches Shane Mitchell into next week

There was a very good one-two punch to close out PFL 6 in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday.

In the co-main event, Sadibou Sy kicked it off with an insanely accurate and devastating wheel kick that KO’d Shane Mitchell in a heartbeat. Thankfully Mitchell was okay, which makes us feel a lot less guilty about watching this highlight on repeat.

This finish followed by OAM stopping Anthony Romero in the main event was a fantastic end to the night.

Rockhold says he’d “f*cking kill” Pereira on the ground

Yes, we already did this story, but what’s a quicker hit than this? Our crew was in the house for Karate Combat 40 this weekend, where Luke Rockhold had a little something to say about how he matches up with Alex Pereira.

Do note that he said “on the ground.”

Jon Anik is one of the best guys in the sport

UFC play-by-play man Jon Anik isn’t just a great guy on the mic but a great guy period. He probably doesn’t get enough credit for things like this: giving some love to Chepe Mariscal, who was overlooked in the bonus department following UFC Jacksonville. So kudos to Jon for doing his thing and being a positive force in the sport.

How about this Chepe Mariscal cat?! That is a hugely memorable UFC debut. He was totally unfazed by all the bright lights that come with a first UFC fight week. I even like the wiffle now, although I think he should get a skin fade. 💈 #CHEPE 🤫

— Jon Anik (@Jon_Anik) June 25, 2023

Dana White still teasing Musk vs. Zuck

We just downright refused to give any airtime (or page space, more accurately) to talk of a fight between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk this past week. Sure, it would have been some easy clicks, but know what? It’s a stupid idea, which has almost zero chance of happening, and if it were to happen, it would be atrocious. Thought CM Punk vs. Mike Jackson was bad? Zuck vs. Musk is likely to make that look like a Fight of the Year contender.

But it’s Sunday, and you know what that means — we catch up on all the stories we didn’t get to during the week. Rarely is that intentional, but more an issue of time and manpower. Not the case here. But hey, Dana White likes keeping in the news cycle, and this is him doing just that. No faulting him there, it’s his job. But there’s as much chance of White actually promoting this fight as there is of the Fiji Mermaid being legit, and not just a dead money with a fish tail sewn on its posterior.

One last (and hopefully it will be the last) comment on this: if Musk and Zuck really want to throw down in the battle of the billionaires, they should do it behind closed doors. Make it a gym challenge. Make sure barely anyone is there. Whatever happens, the rumors of what transpired will become legend, and will wind up more entertaining than anything that could happen in a fight between two spoiled rich kids.

Tony Khan denies Bellator MMA rumors

No, AEW owner Tony Khan, nor his father (who owns the Jacksonville Jaguars) are not in talks to purchase Bellator MMA, nor have they ever been.

After Ariel Helwani made the claim recently, Khan rejected the rumors ahead of a star-studded Canadian tour set to kick off this Sunday with AEW Forbidden Door in Toronto.

“I was surprised to see that report. I haven’t had any conversations with them about that,” Tony Khan said (h/t WrestleZone) during a media scrum for Forbidden Door. “So I don’t know what that was about. My father hasn’t had any conversations with them either. I don’t even know, honestly, who owns the promotion. Is Scott Coker, the owner, the President? I’m not sure.

“I’m familiar with Bellator. I’m familiar with MMA and have never worked professionally in this space other than having some stars from UFC appear at times in AEW. But I saw that report, and yeah, there’s really nothing to that. I’m not sure where that rumor got started. But obviously, it’s an interesting time in the MMA business, just as it’s a very interesting time in the pro wrestling business with a lot of things happening and with the success of AEW and our international expansion.”

Later, Khan threw a little shade at Helwani, who has appeared on-camera for rival WWE in the past.

“But I honestly have never had any talks, and my father has never had any talks about buying Bellator, so I was surprised to see that. I was at the show I was backstage yesterday; somebody sent me that. Was that something Ariel Helwani reported? Well, it would not be the first inaccurate thing Ariel Helwani has reported that is completely inaccurate, but that’s Ariel Helwani for you.”

BKFC 41 turned out the be the biggest event of a busy Saturday in combat sports, with the bareknuckle promotion easily stealing the show from an underwhelming UFC Fight Night card.

Big performances from Ben Rothwell and Eddie Alvarez had fans pumped for the main event, but things took a turn in the second round when it appeared Luke Rockhold wanted out of his fight with Mike Perry. Now we know why — as many suspected, Rockhold not only had his teeth “messed up,” as BKFC President David Feldman stated following the event, but at least one was broken. Possibly two.

Rockhold put the damage on display in a video posted to social media on Sunday — and from the sounds of it, he’s done with bareknuckle boxing, but not combat sports as a whole.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Crq5L8ktU2m/

“Well f*ck. What can I say. You can check bareknuckle off the list. Some crazy sh*t,” Rockhold stated in the clip, adding “Those little knuckles got me. Square on the front two. Maybe a beard, maybe a better mouth piece. It was a good fight, it was a shame it had to end that way. Motherf*cker Mike, you tough bastard. Congrats.”

“Thanks to my sponsors, thanks to the people. I’m not done. Some gloves would be nice though.”

Could that signal a move to traditional boxing, or a return to mixed martial arts? Time will tell. Rockhold, a former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion, was making his bareknuckle debut against Mike Perry on Saturday. He last competed in MMA in August of 2022, losing a decision against Paulo Costa at UFC 288.

The bareknuckle boxing debuts of Luke Rockhold and Eddie Alvarez arrived on Saturday, with BKFC 41 in Colorado an absolutely stacked night of fights.

Rockhold, who requested his release from the UFC last year, was paired up with a fellow UFC alum in “Platinum” Mike Perry, who had promised to “headbutt” the former Strikeforce champ’s hands in the hopes of breaking them. Alvarez, meanwhile, had a slightly less dramatic build-up to his fight with Chad Mendes, which served as the evening’s co-main event.

For Mendes, his fight against Alvarez had the possibility of being his last in combat sports. Citing other successful business interests, Mendes admitted ahead of BKFC 41 that he doesn’t need to fight, though the money — a key motivator for Chad “Money” Mendes — was good, so nothing was certain.

Alvarez, for his part, was simply looking to turn things around after a disappointing run in ONE Championship, which saw the former Bellator MMA and UFC lightweight champion post a 1-2, 1NC record across four fights.

“Queen of Bareknuckle” Bec Rawlings was also in action at BKFC 41, against Christine Ferea, while “Big” Ben Rothwell looked to make it 2-0 in BKB against fellow UFC veteran Josh Copeland. The hard-hitting Brandon Girtz, a longtime Bellator MMA standout, was paired up with Christian Torres, while Chris Camozzi and Daniel Spohn also faced off.

BKFC 41 takes place on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the 1STBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. The card airs live on PPV via Fite.tv. Full results from the event can be found below.

BKFC 41 Results

Christine Ferea (c) def. Bec Rawlings by TKO (doctor’s stoppage), Round 2, 3:00 — for the BKFC women’s flyweight championship

Former UFC champions Eddie Alvarez and Luke Rockhold have signed on with bare-knuckle outfit BKFC.

On Wednesday’s edition of The MMA Hour, BKFC President David Feldman revealed that Rockhold, who was recently granted his release by the UFC, will face off with “Platinum” Mike Perry in the main event of BKFC’s April 29, 2023 card in Broomfield, CO.

Not stopping there, Alvarez will appear in the co-main event, paired up with ex-UFC title challenger Chad “Money” Mendes.

That’s a four-pack of former UFC stars, and some of the biggest names outside the promotion. BKFC had made a business of rehabbing former UFC fighters, with the likes of Ben Rothwell and John Dodson also picking up big wins in the company.

Bare-knuckle boxing has been quickly growing since BKFC helped revive the sport several years back. Roughly half the states in the U.S. have now sanctioned the sport; 24 as of March 1, with more likely to follow later this year. Internationally, the sport continues to grow, with BKFC returning to England this weekend.

When it comes to Rockhold and Alvarez, both appear to have signed on for multi-fight deals.

“Both of the deals, we have options on them. If something big comes along in other sports, we’re going to let them dabble in that,” Feldman said on Wednesday’s appearance. “They are free to do boxing or MMA if we don’t have anything else for them.”

Luke Rockhold (16-6 MMA) was most recently seen in action at UFC 278, where he lost a unanimous decision to Paulo Costa. That extended the former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion’s losing streak to three, with the other setbacks coming to Yoel Romero and Jan Blachowicz.

For his part, Mike Perry is 2-0 in BKFC thus far.

Alvarez (30-8, 2NC) was most recently seen competing for ONE Championship, in a rocky run that saw him post a 1-2, 1NC record. He had asked for his release from the Asian MMA outfit last year, and has not fought since a decision loss to Ok Rae Yoon in 2021.

Like Rockhold, Alvarez is a multi-promotion champion, capturing the lightweight title in both Bellator MMA and the UFC. His opponent, Mendes, is 1-0 under the BKFC banner.

BKFC 41 on April 29, 2023 event will take place at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, CO, and air live on PPV.

Last week saw the MMA world still reeling from the events of UFC 283, where Jamahal Hill sent Glover Teixeira into retirement, winning the light heavyweight title in the process. Conor McGregor inched closer to a return (and potentially a TUF coaching gig), while Bellator locked up their light heavyweight champ, Vadim Nemkov, to a long-term deal.

It’s time once again for the Sunday MMA Quick Hits!

Bellator Re-Signs Light Heavyweight Champ Vadim Nemkov

With Jiri Prochazka hurt and the zaniness that ensued with the UFC’s light heavyweight championship, Russia’s Vadim Nemkov has a real claim to being the best 205lb fighter on the planet. He’s the current Bellator light heavyweight champ, and he’ll remain with the promotion for the foreseeable future.

Bellator announced they’d re-signed Nemkov to a multi-year, multi-fight deal on Monday.

Smart. Nemkov brings instant legitimacy to any promotion, and combined with Corey Anderson, Karl Albrektsson, Phil Davis, Yoel Romero and others, makes this one of the more competitive weight classes for Bellator, when compared with the competition.

Bellator Light Heavyweight Champ Vadim Nemkov Signs Multi-Fight/Year Deal To Remain With The Promotion.

Slap Fighting Pay a Slap in the Face

Former UFC fighter Eric Spicely, who has suffered from concussion symptoms in the past, was offered a 2/2 deal to appear as part of Dana White’s Power Slap.

That’s $2,000 to show, $2,000 to win for the privilege of being subjected to almost guaranteed traumatic brain injury in front of a television audience.

There’s only one way to put this: it’s f*cking embarrassing.

Rockhold Granted UFC Release

Luke Rockhold is no longer a UFC fighter.

In an appearance on The MMA Hour, the former UFC middleweight champion revealed that he had requested, and been granted, his release from the promotion.

Rockhold claimed gold against Chris Weidman in 2015 but lost the belt the following year in his first attempt to defend it, opposite Michael Bisping. The 38-year old is also a former Strikefore champion.

“Free and clear,” is how Rockhold put it, adding “and I’m ready and re-inspired to go out there and do something new.”

The ex-champ is leaving the door open to boxing, MMA, or another combat sport, saying that “I want to go and f*ck some people up.”

“If you want bullsh*t, we can go box, beat up these YouTubers, too.”

Jiri Prochazka Has Message for New Light Heavyweight Champ Jamahal Hill

Intimidation factor: 100%.

No, we don’t expect UFC light heavyweight champion Jamhal Hill to be intimidated by Jiri Prochazka’s message/warning, released after Hill won the title over the weekend. But for those who are not professional fighters, well, this is pretty darn intense.

Mike Tyson Sued Over Decades-Old Sexual Assault Allegation

Mike Tyson is once again facing accusations of sexual assault.

A New York Law enacted last May, the Adult Survivors Act, allows adult complainants to sue those they accuse of sexual assault during a one-year “loopback” window, regardless of when the act was alleged to have taken place.

Earlier this month, an unidentified woman filed suit against Tyson, alleging he raped her in a limousine in Albany, NY, in the early 1990s, though she did not report the incident at the time. She is seeking $5 million dollars in damages.

Sports Illustrated was first to report the news. None of the allegations against Tyson have been proven in court.

The woman claims that she suffered a loss of self-respect due to the incident, depression, and became dependent on alcohol and drugs to cope. Additionally, she has “been unable to maintain and/or develop healthy relationships with men or anyone in general.”

Tyson was sentenced to six years in prison for sexual assault during the height of his fame in 1992. He served three years prior to being released on probation.

“Lola Vice” (Valerie Loureda) makes televised WWE debut

Valerie Loureda, performing under the ring name Lola Vice, made her televised debut for WWE this past week, part of an NXT event — and appears to have turned some heads.

Fury FC Fighter Gives Most Insane Post-Fight Interview of All Time

Wearing something that looked like Hollywood’s idea of a BDSM outfit, Fury FC 68’s Joel Bauman gave the most insane post-fight interview of all time last weekend.

Bauman, an LFA and Bellator MMA veteran, is the same fighter who announced he had herpes in a previous post-fight interview, so crazy is just par for the course. This time around, Bauman called himself an “infliuencer to influencers,” and claimed that Jimmy Kimmel is a pedophile.

There’s a very good chance, of course, that Bauman is simply talking crazy get make headlines, in which case, it appears to be working.

Zebaztian Kadestam kicks off ONE’s Prime Video era in style

ONE Championship kicked off its partnership with Amazon Prime Video on Friday, and former welterweight champ Zebaztian Kadestam got the ball rolling with a picture-perfect uppercut KO.

It really is worth another look.

Nate Diaz smokes weed while making USADA sample collector wait

It’s a good thing USADA upped the threshold for marijuana, because Nate Diaz literally smoked a blunt while making a USADA sample collector wait to get more urine recently.

In a video documenting the visit, Diaz initially says the collector needs two more litres, but unless he’s going to fill a soda bottle, he probably means millilitres.

The Stockton native, who headlines UFC 279 next month against Khamzat Chimaev, streamed the encounter on Instagram live, which was immediately capped and circulated on social media.

“This man won’t get out of my house because I didn’t give him enough piss,” Diaz says at one point in the video. “I’ve pissed all I can my n*****. How many liters do I have to do? I’ve got two more liters of piss I’ve got to give him. He won’t get out of here until—. DK is my guy, but USADA can f*cking suck a d*ck. Come back in six hours, I’ll give you two more liters. Sorry, DK.”

Sean Strickland glad that “uptight” Rockhold retired

Luke Rockhold retired after losing a gruelling three-round decision against Paulo Costa at UFC278, and current middleweight contender Sean Strickland is glad to see him go.

“I’m actually glad that he retired, man,” Strickland told The Schmo in a recent interview. “You will not meet a human being that meets Luke Rockhold and says, ‘Man, this is a solid guy. I want to go hang out with him.’ Luke Rockhold is the definition of what an uptight c*nt is, and I’m glad that I do not have to hear his name or see him in the MMA community.”

Strickland dismissed Rockhold’s chances in the Costa fight, suggesting that he had won the UFC middleweight championship at an “easy” time. Though he didn’t entirely discredit Rockhold’s abilities.

“No one thought Luke was gonna win,” Strickland stated. “We all knew that. You guys f*cking knew that. I knew that. F*cking guy is a champion. He does train. He wasn’t going to win, but like, he’s not a f*cking can. You don’t win a belt, even if he did win at a very easy time. You don’t win a belt and then f*cking suck.”

Borrachina undergoes surgery, hoping to return in January

Speaking of Paulo Costa, the UFC 278 middleweight underwent hand surgery following his win over Rockhold. He’ll be on a shelf for a bit as a result, but is eyeing a returning in January.

“I broke my hand in the fight,” Costa said in a video posted to his Youtube channel (with English subtitles). “I thought I had a bone injury or maybe ligaments, but what really happened was a fracture to the metacarpal bone. I hoped it wasn’t a fracture because then I would be able to come back to fighting again in 50 or 60 days and use all the conditioning and the whole camp I’ve done [re: UFC 278].”

“I planned on fighting in 60 days but it won’t be possible,” he said. “I’ll have to fight in December or January. We’ll have a UFC card in Rio [UFC 283 on January 21, 2023] so maybe it happens there.”

John Dodson Flatlined Ryan Benoit at BKFC 28

“The Magician” had a short but very entertaining fight at Saturday’s BKFC 28, in another highlight reel clip well worth a second look.
