It seems that when the PFL acquired Bellator MMA over a year ago now, they also picked up a little bit of the latter’s bad luck.

The PFL World Tournament launched on Thursday with this year’s PFL 1 featuring featherweights and welterweights in action at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. The headliner saw a couple of former Bellator 170lb champs face off in Jason Jackson and Andrey Koreshkov, a pairing that had a tough act to follow when featherweight Jesus Pinedo made short work of Adam Borics in the co-main event.

Yet while Jackson vs. Koreshkov started a bit slow compared to several other highly entertaining fights that dotted Thursday’s PFL 1 card (we’re looking at you, Movlid Khaybulaev vs. Jeremy Kennedy), things went from bad to worse in the second round. There, “The Ass-Kicking Machine” Jackson became the skull-cracking machine, connecting to the back of Koreshkov’s head with several illegal elbows that split the Russian open.

That led the ref to halt the action, bringing in the doctor to determine whether Koreshkov could continue. Though stunned, he was given plenty of time, and signaled that he was ready to fight on.

Not for long however. Jackson soon had the fight back on the ground, where the illegal elbows had originally transpired. This time, he wisely pursued a choke instead, of the rear-naked variety, and soon enough it was under the chin. Moments later, Andrey Koreshkov was napping. Jason Jackson had the technical submission win.

Did Jason Jackson deserve to get a point reduction vs Andrey Koreshkov or nah??? 👀🤷🏽‍♂️ #PFLWorldTournament

Thoughts 💭🤔 pic.twitter.com/a4U7m6vKY1

— MMA Homie Podcast (@theMMAhomies) April 4, 2025

While the low blows almost certainly factored in, mercifully, the fight didn’t end in a DQ or No Contest. As the ref could be heard explaining to the corners, Jackson’s blows were far from intentional and the fact that Koreshkov’s head was in motion was a mitigating factor.

With PFL 1 in the book, some big fights have been set up moving forward. Gabriel Braga and Jesus Pinedo will meet for the third time, a rubber match in their series. And Jackson will move on to face Thad Jean, who scored an upset win over Mukhamed Berkhamov earlier in the night.

Official Result: Jason Jackson def. Andrey Koreshkov by technical submission (rear-naked choke), Round 2, 4:21

The Professional Fighters League kicks off its World Tournament, with featherweights and welterweights in the spotlight at the 2025 PFL 1 card on Thursday in Orlando, Florida.

Former Bellator MMA welterweight champions Jason Jackson and Andrey Koreshkov headlined the show, which marked the promotion’s shift from a season format featuring a convoluted points system, to a “win or go home” grand prix, similar to Bellator, RIZIN, and PRIDE grand prixs of years past.

Also on the PFL 1 card on Thursday, which took place on the Universal Studios backlot, Canadian Jeremy Kennedy, a former Bellator title challenger, was paired up with Movlid Khaybulaev, a former PFL champ whose last couple of years had been marred by injury and inactivity.

The PFL 1 card was thrown for a loop on Wednesday when Magomed Umalatov, a 2024 finalist scheduled to face Logan Storley, missed weight for the fight. He was pulled from the tournament, replaced by Joseph Luciano, one of two alternates who had been set to face off in prelim action.

What motivates Andrey Koreshkov, who enters the PFL World Tournament at welterweight this Thursday in Orlando, Florida, is more or less what has always motivated him.

A title, for one. The fact that fighting is his career. And that half million dollars in prize money, Koreshkov (28-5) would admit during this week’s PFL 1 media day, speaking with media outlets including Cageside Press.

“Of course having a new belt around my waist is great motivation, but also I would like to add that I do not view my career to be finished. I used to fight for Bellator for a long period of time, now it’s a new page, new era in my career,” Koreshkov said on Tuesday. “So I just keep going.”

Should he go all the way in the new-look PFL season (maybe we shouldn’t call it a season: it’s a win and move on grand prix, no more playoffs or points), Koreshkov will join a number of Russian standouts as PFL champion. That’s an added perk, and added motivation for the former Bellator welterweight champ.

“I consider fighters who come out of Russia to be one of the strongest if not the strongest in MMA, in the sport of MMA. And because of that, that would be good motivation to add my name in the list of guys who have already became PFL champions,” Koreshkov replied when asked about joining names like Shamil Musav, Magomed Magomedkerimov, and Movlid Khaybulaev as a PFL champ. “Which is a great success there.”

It’s not a Russian, but Jamaican “Ass-Kicking Machine” and fellow ex-Bellator champ Jason Jackson that Koreshkov faces on Thursday, as the PFL’s World Tournament kicks off. The pair might have shared heritage in MMA, but have yet to cross paths.

“Of course he was a champion in Bellator while I was still in the organization, and in theory myself and my team were viewing him as an opponent. And at one point we were close for me to become a challenger, but I decided to continue my career at PFL rather than fight for the Bellator title,” said Koreshkov on the match-up, and whether he was familiar with Jackson’s work. “So answering the question, yes, I’ve seen a lot of his fights, we viewed him as a potential opponent, and of course we have some thoughts about what could be done against him in the cage.”

Jackson has claimed that had he been in the promotion when Koreshkov was champ, the Russian might not have managed to secure gold. That was a suggestion that Andrey Koreshkov was quick to dismiss. Given they’d never fought, “we can only guess at what could have been. When I was a champion, he was not around,” stated Koreshkov. “Where was he when I was fighting as champion? Was he fighting at all? I’m not even sure. So I was the champion, case closed.”

The Professional Fighters League kicks off its 2025 campaign with a new format debuting at PFL 1 this Thursday in Orlando, Florida.

It’s win and move on, or if you prefer, win or go home, when it comes to the PFL tournament this year. Gone is the season format and convoluted points system, gone as well is the million dollars in prize money. Instead, it’s 500K U.S. to the winner, but on top of their purse for each fight (the PFL’s previous payouts included a fighter’s regular season and playoff purses in their total prize money).

Now called the World Tournament, the PFL has brought in a grand prix format the MMA fans should be very familiar with. As for the names involved, PFL 1 is headlined by a couple of Bellator standouts in Jason Jackson and Andrey Koreshkov, and overall it’s a mix of familiar names from both Bellator (which the PFL has now absorbed) and the Professional Fighters League filling out the docket.

Weigh-ins for PFL 1 take place Wednesday, April 2 in Orlando, FL; results can be found below.

In a major blow to the PFL’s welterweight tournament, Magomed Umalatov missed weight on Wednesday, and has been pulled from his fight with Logan Storley. Instead, Storley faces Joseph Luciano, who had already weighed in for an alternate bout. Umalatov is out of the tournament entirely as a result, after going to the finals last year.

PFL 1 2025: Jackson vs. Koreshkov Weigh-In Results

Main card

Welterweight: Jason Jackson (170.8) vs. Andrey Koreshkov (171) – Welterweight Quarterfinal

Russian welterweights Magomed Umalatov and Andrey Koreshkov stepped into the PFL SmartCage in Chicago for the main event of PFL 3 on Saturday.

Despite being undefeated and competing in three different PFL seasons, Umalatov has never won their championship or even fought in the playoffs due to a bizarre string of bad luck including injury and visa issues. His well-roundedness makes him a constant threat to win it all, however. The 14-0 fighter faced a much more experienced fighter in kickboxing specialist Andrey Koreshkov, one of the longest tenured Bellator fighters ever with a 16-4 record in the promotion. Koreshkov is known for his wild, exciting spinning kicks, which have generated many a highlight-reel knockout. When the dust settled, Umalatov stayed undefeated

The underdog Koreshkov came out focused on leg kicks, but when he threw his first back kick Umalatov timed it perfectly and got a rear body-lock. He pushed Koreshkov to the fence and drove for a takedown but Andrey kept his hips up and was able to turn into Magomed to create an over-under clinch. Umalatov was still not to be denied though, as he threw Koreshkov to the ground and got in full-guard. Koreshkov used rubber guard and set up an Omoplata, entangling Umalatov’s arm awkwardly. However, Magomed circled around and freed the arm before settling back in full-guard, then passing to half. Koreshkov continually threw short strikes off his back. Although Umalatov stayed on top the rest of the way and Andrey’s punches did little damage, Magomed did no damage from top position, which potentially lost him the round.

The start of the second round saw Umalatov land his best blows of the fight, dropping Koreshkov to his knees with two consecutive right hands. Andrey shot a takedown to survive but Umalatov defended and forced him back to striking range. They clinched up again soon after and this time Magomed landed a trip just like the first round, then established side control. Andrey re-guarded briefly and butt-scooted to the fence but Umalatov passed again with ease. Koreshkov tried to use the fence to get up but Umalatov floated over the top of the position to maintain control, and may returned Andrey when he did stand up. Finally, with one minute left, Koreshkov was able to get to and stay on his feet. They swung, slightly tiredly, for the final twenty seconds of the round in the highest pace striking exchange of the fight.

Umalatov had to bite down and seal his victory as he had the momentum going into round three. Koreshkov shot an early takedown but was put in a front headlock and forced to his back. He got back up but got may returned by Magomed, who settled on top in Andrey’s guard. Both men were tired and could do little on the mat, though Umalatov did pass to half-guard and tried to punch. The crowd began to chant, “Stand them up,” prompting a warning from the ref, which in turn prompted Umalatov to open up and punch more. Koreshkov tried to scramble up but gave up his back in the process. Umalatov could not get both hooks in, though, and eventually settled for being in full-guard again. The crowd did not like it after a card full of action, but Umalatov landed short ground strikes for the final thirty seconds to deal his victory.

There was no surprise when the scorecards were read out as Magomed Umalatov improved to 15-0 with all three judges scoring it 29-28 in his favor. He moved into a tie for third place with Goiti Yamauchi in the welterweight standings after the first round of fights.

Chicago, IL — Former Bellator welterweight champ Andrey Koreshkov is set to make his PFL regular season debut this Friday, as he heads into Chicago for a bout with Magomed Umalatov.

Koreshkov (27-4) is no stranger to fighting outside of Bellator, having also competed off and on on the regional circuit in Russia outside of his dates under the American promotion’s banner. But Bellator MMA was long Koreshkov’s primary stomping ground, dating back to his debut with the organization in 2012.

14 years later, Andrey Koreshkov arrives in a new home. “My first impressions are actually really good, because the organization treats fighters really well, and I feel welcomed here,” he told Cageside Press during the PFL 3 media day in Chicago this week. “So so far, I feel very, very comfortable.”

The 2023 PFL season will not be the first tournament for Koreshkov, who also fought in Bellator’s Welterweight Grand Prix, not to mention the Season 7 and Season 10 welterweight tournaments in the promotion’s early days. It’s a format switch to be sure; under the PFL, the full schedule for the year is laid out. It’s another difference that Koreshkov pointed out, however.

“To be honest with you, I prefer the classic way of holding the tournaments I used to take part in before. The reason why, is because I think that the [PFL] scoring system could play a trick on you,” he explained. That trick, he continued, is that even if you win your first two fights, if you don’t finish your opponents, one of those opponents could land in the playoffs ahead of you by virtue of having six points and a finish. “I think that could be a tricky situation, but other than that, a tournament is a tournament.”

As for fellow Russian Magomed Umalatov, “his record speaks for itself,” stated Koreshkov. “He’s undefeated, he finished, not all of his fights but he has a lot of finishes. He’s really well-trained, he has knockout power, and he thinks when he fights, so he has a high Fighter IQ. That’s what makes him really, really dangerous. And so this is a really dangerous opponent coming on Friday.”

Bellator MMA returned to Japan on Saturday to close out the final quarterfinal round of its lightweight grand prix, as well as crown an inaugural flyweight champion at Bellator x RIZIN 2.

The cross-promotion with RIZIN Fighting Federation came with a second half, Super RIZIN 2, that would air (via Fite.tv) after the Bellator portion of the show on Showtime in the U.S. And while the promotion versus promotion format was gone for the most part, due to a staph infection endured by A.J. McKee, RIZIN’s Roberto de Souza stepped into the main event and million dollar grand prix against Patricky Pitbull.

In the co-main event, meanwhile, Kyoji Horiguchi finally had a chance to claim a major title at flyweight. Once a two-promotion champ at bantamweight in both Bellator and RIZIN, Japan’s Horiguchi would face Makoto Shinryu for the inaugural Bellator MMA flyweight championship on Saturday at the Saitama Super Arena.

The former UFC title challenger has long been considered one of the best lighter fighters on the planet, and the chance for a third major title underscored that.

Bellator x RIZIN 2 kicks off at 11PM ET on Showtime — full results can be found below!

Andrey Koreshkov’s first fight back with Bellator in a year and a half is a big one as he takes on Lorenz Larkin to open Bellator x Rizin 2 on Saturday, July 29.

The two are both ranked in the top ten of Bellator’s welterweight division and have competed before, back in 2019, in a bout that was decided by a controversial split decision.

Koreshkov and Larkin each dropped each other in the first two rounds, respectively, before Koreshkov took down and controlled Larkin for most of the third. However the Russian was unable to do significant damage while trying to maintain control and as a result two judges gave Lorenz Larkin the decision.

When asking Andrey about that first fight and if wrestling will also be a path for him in the rematch, his thoughts are clear.

“If people re-watched our first fight they would think that maybe it would be a good idea to wrestle with him… but I studied him a lot and I know him as a fighter and I think that he has very, very good takedown defense,” Koreshkov (26-4) told Cageside Press recently. “I watched different guys who would try to take him down and even if someone was able to take him down it is really hard to get any dividends from it. He’s very good at using the cage to get back up. I don’t think that it will work to spend energy to wrestle with him.”

“He prefers to fight standing up, I prefer to fight standing up as well, and it makes an exciting fight… I think it would make a fight more exciting.”

Certainly the fans in Saitama Super Arena, famed for its legendary history of having some of the best kickboxing fights in the world take place there, will appreciate a stand up battle between two dynamic strikers.

Koreshkov acknowledges the history of combat sports in Japan, both kickboxing and MMA, especially PRIDE FC, which he has fond memories of.

“Fighting in Japan was always one of my dreams. This dream comes true. Visiting Japan is also amazing, I’ve never been to Japan before. Also MMA has evolved and developed a lot since the PRIDE days. PRIDE created a lot of top level stars in combat sports. Fighting in Saitama Super Arena is like a dream come true.”

Speaking of those PRIDE stars, his favorite fighters of all time come from that promotion.

“My favorite fighters during the PRIDE days were Mirko Cro Cop and Wanderlei Silva because these guys always show very exciting fights, real battles. Either it would be Wanderlei all covered in blood, his blood or his opponents, or Mirko being very precise, very technical in his striking.”

Koreshkov knows how to put on a show himself, with two of his last three knockouts coming by way of spinning kick. He has a litany of other flashy finishes on his record, like his flying knee knockout of Justin Baesman in 2014. His answer when asked about how he got so skilled at these techniques was revealing about the mindset of him and his team.

“I train under Alexander [Shlemenko’s] guidance and we spend a lot of time practicing these moves like spinning moves and flying knees. The reason why, is these moves are very unorthodox. Not many people use them, especially not too many use them successfully, and that is why it is difficult for our opponents to prepare for them. It is hard to find people who use these moves really well [for] training camps.”

It takes a lot of physical skill and coordination to do these techniques, and one thing that helped him develop that was dancing from a young age, as his parents forced him to take dance before they would let him compete in combat sports.

“I think that there were some positive things that dancing from an early age helped me with, most importantly is coordination and stretching,” he said, regarding how dance helped him become a better fighter.

In this next fight Koreshkov will take sole ownership of the most fights in Bellator welterweight division’s history and a win would also give him the most wins in divisional history. He is not worried about such things though; Andrey is a fighter’s fighter and he focuses solely on his fight.

“I don’t pay too much attention to statistics… I never cared about that. For me it is going to be just another fight.”

He also said he will not be able to see the sights in Japan, despite having always wanted to visit, as he will be completely focused on preparing for the fight.

We asked Koreshkov about his life outside of fighting and he revealed himself to be a family man with a love of the outdoors.

“I have a family; I have a wife and two wonderful kids so I like to spend time with them. Also fighting, fishing is one of my hobbies that I really enjoy that helps me relax, going someplace outside of the city.”

Really though, what drives him is clearly a desire to fight. This next fight is a big one for Bellator’s fifth-ranked welterweight, but he declined to make a prediction of how it will go.

“I really hate to make any prediction in the fights because they never [come true], but in this fight I will try to use all my techniques and my spinning kicks as well. However, I am not going to devote too much energy to just doing them because I am quite sure that Lorenz Larkin is aware of what I’m doing and he will be very well prepared for that. It will be hard to catch him again with the same technique. So I am working on inventing something new, something that will give me an ability to catch him by surprise. I want to surprise him in this fight.”

If Andrey can defeat his rival, ninth-ranked Lorenz Larkin, at Bellator vs RIZIN 2 then he will be on a five-fight win streak and be next in line for a title eliminator, with an eye on perhaps facing the champion, Yaroslav Amosov. This card is a big one for Bellator and that only creates more opportunity for the Russian striker to earn his path towards that belt.

The latest cross-promotional event between U.S. mixed martial arts org Bellator MMA and Japan’s RIZIN Fighting Federation continues to grow.

On Wednesday, Bellator officials announced via press release the addition of two more key match-ups to Bellator X RIZIN on July 30, 2023.

In the first, former welterweight champion Andrey Koreshkov will face off against UFC vet and current Bellator standout Lorenz Larkin. In bantamweight action, meanwhile, a pair of grand prix alums will face off, as one-time title challenger Danny Sabatello meets Magomed Magomedov.

Sabatello (14-2) recently returned to the win column, defeating Marcos Breno by submission this past April to bounce back from his interim title fight loss against Raufeon Stots. That fight was additionally a semi-final in the Bellator Bantamweight Grand Prix, which Patchy Mix would go on to win.

Magomedov (19-2) is 3-2 in Bellator, but coming off a loss against Mix in the other grand prix semi-final.

Koreshkov (26-4) has not competed for the company since February of 2022, and took his last fight outside of the promotion, beating Leonardo Cavalheiro last June in Omsk, Russia. Overall, the former champ has won his past four fights, while Larkin has won seven straight outside of a no contest due to an illegal elbow in his first fight with Mukhamed Berkhamov.

Larkin took just over a minute and a half to knock Berkhamov out in the pair’s rematch this past February.

Bellator X RIZIN is set to take place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, just outside Tokyo. Unlike December’s Bellator MMA vs. RIZIN card, the promotions are not going head-to-head this time out.

The following bouts have been announced for the event so far:

Patricky Pitbull vs. AJ McKee — Lightweight World Grand Prix Quarterfinal

Kyoji Horiguchi vs. Makoto “Shinryu”

Danny Sabatello vs. Magomed Magomedov

Kana Watanabe vs. Veta Arteaga

Andrey Koreshkov vs. Lorenz Larkin
