Hill was looking to snap a two-fight skid, while “The Panda” had not lost a fight since 2019. She’d been one of ONE’s biggest stars, with a lengthy title reign and memorable fights with Angela Lee.

Hill came out hot, taking the fight to Jing Nan, the later stumbling to her back for a moment before scrambling up. Hill put the Chinese fighter on the fence, clinching up and adding knees; Jing Nan fired upper cuts after Hill connected with knees. Eventually they’d reverse before Hill broke free and reset at center. Another clinch against the fence would follow, those moments split up by action at center. Jing Nan seemed to settle in after the hot start by Hill, leading to a more balance back-and-forth. Later in the round, they picked up the pace, Hill firing a knee and a kick in with her combinations. At times, Jing Nan raised her hands, suggesting she hadn’t felt the impact, but Hill was finding some success on the feet, though she’d finish the round controlling clinching up once more, from the back, looking for a takedown before running out of time.

Round two saw Jing Nan loosen up enough to fire a spinning back fist, though she hit air. Hill continued to be super-aggresive, backing Xiong up to the fence, firing a combo, clinching, and this time, landing a takeodwn. Jing Nan gave up her back and neck as she rolled to her knees but was able to get back up with relative ease. On the feet, Hill launched another combo, which Jing Nan shook off before connecting with a spinning back kick to the midsection. Late in the frame, Hill would chase a standing guillotine, but Jing Nan was able to break free.

Another hot start by Hill, putting the pressure on as Jing Nan fired back. “Overkill” didn’t appear to have slowed a step, and held a slight speed advantage even in the final round. Hill fired a jump knee just as Jing Nan changed levels, and came very close to doing serious damage. For a fighter almost certainly ahead on the scorecards, Hill refused to take her foot off the gas. Jing Nan, in comparison, appeared to have lost a step. She’d been on her backfoot through much of the fight but even more so in the third. Hill would simply bully her late in the round, adding a spinning elbow and another jump knee, chasing the finish to the final horn.

At 41-years young, Angela Hill put on one of her better performances in recent memory, chasing the finish from bell to bell and winning all three rounds against a formidable champion from outside the UFC.

ONE Championship has done away with its women’s strawweight division and released longtime champ Xiong Jing Nan, Cageside Press confirmed on Thursday. The development was first reported by Nick Atkin of the Bangkok Post.

The change only impacts the promotion’s women’s strawweight division in MMA, while the men’s side remains intact, a source familiar with the change informed Cageside Press.

Xiong Jing Nan (19-2), 38, posted an 11-1 record under the ONE Championship banner, including a custom rules bout against Nat Jaroonsak in 2023. She made her debut for the promotion in 2017, and claimed gold the following January. Seven title defenses followed, with her lone loss in the company coming against the since-retired atomweight champ Angela Lee in 2019 (Xiong had defeated Lee when she moved up to strawweight earlier that year).

Xiong last competed against Meng Bo in March 2025, winning a unanimous decision in an attempt to move back to atomweight. She missed weight for the bout, potentially signaling the end of her run with the company, which seems set to focus on atomweight moving forward.

The Chinese star was once one of the most recognizable names on the ONE Championship roster, and boasts 11 wins by KO/TKO among her 19 career victories.

Outside of Thai star Saenchai taking on Ibragim Abdulmedzhidov in the main event, kickboxing star Nieky Holzken was in action against Sinsamut Klinmee, while on the MMA side, veteran atomweight Meng Bo returned. Bo had an early career win over UFC women’s strawweight champ Weili Zhang, and was paired up with fellow ONE star Xiong Jing Nan, dropping down from ONE’s strawweight division.

ONE announced on Wednesday that ONE 168 in Denver, Colorado on Sept 6 will be headlined by two world title fights. ONE atomweight MMA champion Stamp will move up to strawweight to challenge for Xiong Jing Nan for her title.

The co-main event sets ONE bantamweight Muay Thai champion Haggerty defending his title against Superlek Kiatmoo9.

Xiong will be defending her strawweight title for the 8th time since winning gold in 2018. She’s coming off a win over Nat Jaroonsak in a special rules MMA bout last September.

Stamp (11-2) returns to Denver for the first time since last May where she finished Alyse Anderson in an MMA bout.

Since then she’s also collected a victory over Seo Hee Ham that earned her the ONE atomweight championship in late 2023.

Haggerty looks to defend his ONE bantamweight Muay Thai title and get a win back against Superlek who defeated him in 2018.

The champ is coming off a knockout victory over Felipe Lobo in February. That was following a kickboxing win over Fabricio de Andrade last November.

ONE 168 takes place at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado on Sept 6 and broadcast on Prime Video.

With the card airing in U.S. prime time, it was another excuse to bring out the big guns, which ONE did in the main event, featuring atomweight champion and promotional darling Angela Lee again making the move to strawweight to challenge for Xiong Jing Nan’s title there.

Lee had come up short in an earlier attempt to win strawweight gold from Xiong in 2019, then defended her own atomweight belt against the Chinese fighter in a rematch later that same year.

Also on Friday’s card, Thailand’s Stamp Fairtex, who had won the promotion’s women’s atomweight grand prix, only to come up short against Lee in a title bid earlier this year. Fairtex was paired up with Jihin Radzuan, and fans could no doubt expect to see a bit of the Stamp dance at some point.

Former featherweight champ Martin Nguyen was also in action Friday, taking on Russia’s Ilya Freymanov.

Lee (11-2) will face Nan (17-2) in a strawweight title fight at ONE on Prime Video 2 on September 30, 2022. MMA Fighting was first to report news of the booking, with promotion officials and Lee herself subsequently confirming the match-up.

The pair have met twice before. In March of 2019, atomweight champ Lee moved up a weight class to challenge for Nan’s strawwweight title. The bid to become a double-champ failed, as Xiong Jing Nan became the first fighter to defeat Angela Lee.

That October, China’s Nan would herself attempt to claim a second belt, dropping to atomweight to challenge Lee. This time, the Canadian born Lee came out on top, defending her title by submitting Nan in the fifth round.

Lee then took a hiatus from fighting to give birth to her daughter, Ava Marie. She returned to action this past March, defeating ONE atomweight grand prix winner Stamp Fairtex at ONE X.

Both of Lee’s losses as a professional have come in ONE’s strawweight division. She has never lost as an atomweight.

Xiong Jing Nan has won three straight fights, against Tiffany Teo, Michelle Nicolini, and Ayaka Miura. She has successfully defended her strawweight title six times.

ONE on Prime Video 2 will take place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore on September 30, but will air during U.S. Prime Time.

In the Heavy Hitters headliner, “The Panda” went the distance against Japan’s Ayaka Miura, winning a five-round unanimous decision to secure the sixth defense of her crown. The only blemish thus far in Jing Nan’s ONE career came against Angela Lee, down a weight class at atomweight in a bid for a second title.

With their career series tied, a rubber match could still be lurking in the distance. For now, however, Xiong Jing Nan remains a force in ONE’s women’s strawweight division.

One unfortunate absence from the card on Friday was former UFC title challenger Yushin Okami. Okami’s bout wound up cancelled after opponent Leandro Ataides tested positive for COVID-19, the Japanese fighter revealed on social media.

The Chinese strawweight world champion had been perfect under the ONE Championship banner, save for a failed bid to topple atomweight champ Angela Lee for a second title. With that loss negated by the fact that Lee had likewise failed to defeat Xiong Jing Nan at strawweight, “The Panda” looked as formidable as ever, and was coming off two straight successful title defenses when she faced Japan’s Ayaka Miura in Singapore on Friday.

Miura, who previously fought for Pancrase, entered the fight with a 4-1 record on ONE, having submitted Rayane Bastos with a scarf-hold Americana in her last fight.

Also on the card, Japanese veteran and former UFC title challenger Yushin Okami returned, facing Leandro Ataides, while ONE atomweight grand prix fighter Meng Bo took on Tiffany Teo.

Well, we shall want no more. The UFC returns this week, as does Invicta FC, ONE Championship, and a number of other promotions. By the end of the month, the UFC’s heavyweight title will have been defended, as well as Bellator’s — both fights being title unification bouts.

There are some interesting title fights coming up this week, however. While the UFC is bringing a Fight Night event with no championship gold on the line, Invicta, ONE, KSW, and even the regional circuit have some title fights worth keeping an eye on.

Despite the terrible acronym (PAWFC is way too close to PAWG, frankly), Pallas Athena Women’s Fighting Championship has a solid card for an upstart promotion. It helps that the best female fighter not signed to a female promotion (wait, technically Kayla Harrison isn’t currently signed, so make that second best?) is topping the event.

It’s pretty much a crime that Sarah Kaufman isn’t signed to either the UFC or Bellator, though the latter doesn’t currently have her weight class. The Canadian is 5-1 since leaving the UFC following losses to Valentina Shevchenko and Alexis Davis — a.k.a. one of the best female fighters on the planet, and a former UFC title challenger.

Kaufman, a former Strikeforce champion, won gold in Invicta after departing the UFC. She came up short in her PFL run, but let’s not forget that came up not one, but two weight classes. After sitting out most of the pandemic due to girls simply not wanting to fight her, Kaufman finally got back to work at BTC 13 in Ontario last year. That saw her smash through Bellator vet Jessy Miele in a featherweight fight; at PAWFC 1, it’s back to bantamweight, where she’ll face the little-known Claudia Leite for the promotion’s inaugural 135lb belt.

Brazil’s Leite is on a four-fight win streak and is no pushover, so a Kaufman win here is far from a given. But if she claims the belt, the UFC really needs to give her another look. In the meantime, with Canada’s regional MMA scene struggling in recent years, it’s nice to see another option open its doors — and a rare all-female show at that. The card, which also features the well-known Andy Nguyen, will stream live on Fite.tv
