Sean Strickland got into a Twitter beef with BKFC because of course he did, while Nate Marquardt got taken to task for homophobic tweets. It’s a wonder any fighter bothers with social media these days, but Miranda Maverick and Jasmine Jasudavicius showed how to use it correctly following the latter’s UFC Vegas 70 bout on Saturday night. Plus, Bellator extended its broadcast deal with the BBC, and more. The Sunday MMA Quick Hits are here again!

Strickland Calls Out BKFC, Promotion Claps Back

Sean Strickland had a point when he called out BKFC for signing over the hill UFC fighters. Really, that has kind of been their business model. But being honest, he took an L on this one.

Marquardt Takes Heat for Homophobic Tweets

Nate Marquardt took offense to an advertisement during UFC Vegas 69 that showed two men kissing. Conveniently forgetting that every remote control has an off button and option to change channel (or, if you’re streaming, you know, hit that little X to let your voice be heard), he opted to voice his disgust on Twitter.

The end result… did not go well for Marquardt, especially when the former Strikeforce champ and UFC title challenger doubled down, suggesting that those guilty of homosexuality and fornication deserved death.

It is not hateful to say that homosexuality, pedophilia, or fornication is disgusting. It’s not loving to be silent when the culture praises things that lead people to Hell (1Cor 6:9-11). It’s not hateful, but loving to protect children from this world’s evil demented propaganda

— Nate Marquardt (@NathanMarquardt) February 19, 2023

Seriously. Death. We’re dubious that Nate Marquardt is living the life of a celibate priest, but even if he is — tone it down a bit there, Nate.

https://twitter.com/NathanMarquardt/status/1627352202166648835

Since Marquardt is no longer an active fighter, he doesn’t need to worry about being cancelled. That said, Nate should probably remember that in the real world, you’re going to come across things you don’t like and people different than you. It’s not all that hard to avoid them if you really need to (again, just turn it off), instead of saying they’re “worthy of death.” For someone saying people need Jesus, he sure forgot the whole “do unto others” thing.

William Knight Gets Death Threats from “Fans” After UFC Vegas 69

It cannot be said enough: if you are the type of dirtbag who sends death threats to athletes because they “let you down,” or cost you money betting, or because your life is just that empty — kindly leave the sport. Leave all sports.

After a downright puzzling lack of action in his fight with Marcin Pracnio at UFC Vegas 69, William Knight says he’s received threats on his life.

“In life, human beings aren’t perfect, but I’m taking ownership of my actions, because I didn’t do sh*t. Exactly what happened. I stood there, I froze, and I take full responsibility. I know what I must do for my next fight,” Knight said in a video to fans.

William Knight says he has received death threats following his loss to Marcin Prachnio pic.twitter.com/zQEh3XdZJe

“All these crazy inboxes of threats, all these inboxes of disrespect, I get it. Y’all have a right to be angry. I read messages, y’all threatening my life, y’all talking crazy saying I don’t belong in the UFC, all this other stuff,” he added. “But when I was undefeated for three years, y’all were riding the wave, when I entered the UFC undefeated, y’all were riding the wave, when I made my debut the same [month] I won my second Contender Series [appearance], two fights in one month, y’all were riding the wave. I get it. I understand. At the end of the day, I have my legit followers, my legit fans, my legit people. I have you guys. For the rest of you that were just here for the ride to watch me fall, you got what you wanted it. I get it. I’m good. I’m not bothered by it.”

Knight was cut by the UFC this past week.

Bellator MMA Extends Broadcast Deal with BBC

Bellator will remain on the BBC for the foreseeable future. Promotion officials announced the extension of their broadcast deal this week, a multi-year agreement that will see all Bellator events available on the BBC iPlayer in 2023 and beyond.

The deal arrives just as the promotion returned to Europe for Bellator 291 in Dublin, Ireland this weekend.

PRIDE Vibes

This is absolutely the type of freakshow fight you would have seen back in PRIDE. Spain’s Dogfight Wild Tournament pitted a bantamweight against a heavyweight in Raymison “Formiga” Bruno vs. Roger Dalet, with the latter playing the role of Goliath next to Bruno’s diminutive David.

The coolest part of this match-up? David wins via submission after getting the giant down (h/t MMA Fighting and Grabaka Hitman).

Miranda Maverick calls out Jasmine Jasudavicius, Gets Positive Response

Lost in the chaos that was Saturday’s UFC Vegas 70 card, which had multiple fights cancelled during fight week and its main event cancelled while the card was already underway, were some very strong showings from the Canadian contingent.

Team Canada went 2-1 on the night, and considering that Ontario’s Mike Malott fought (and submitted) Quebec’s Yohan Lainesse, that’s the best they could have done.

The other big Canadian winner at UFC Vegas 70 was Jasmine Jasudavicius, Malott’s Niagara Top Team teammate. She looked dominant against Gabriella Fernandes, a former LFA champ making her promotional debut.

Now 2-1 in the UFC, Jasudavicius is starting to get some attention — and Miranda Maverick called her out following the bout. Seems like Jasudavicius is game, and if their timetable lines up, this is an easy fight to book.

On the lead up to UFC Vegas 69, the main talking point was how the card was extremely lacklustre. Something that played into this narrative was that it was once again held at the UFC Apex, the third card so far this year to take place in the Las Vegas venue.

Despite the preconceptions, the card played out to be quite an exciting one, with several first round finishes and some closely contested match-ups throughout. Let’s take a look at what could be next for the losers on the night.

Jessica Andrade

Andrade stepped into this fight with soaring contender Erin Blanchfield on just over a week’s notice. Although it was late notice for the Brazilian, her last fight came at the end of January so it is likely she was still in good fight shape. Not only that, but Blanchfield also had to prepare for the puzzle of Andrade on short notice too.

Andrade began the fight the far more active of the two and was having success punching in volume, as she always does.

Unfortunately for the 31-year-old though, we all found out just how good the 23-year-old Blanchfield is already, and she answered a lot of questions that people had about her coming into this fight.

Andrade’s stock doesn’t drop though. She will have gained even more respect than she already had by taking the short notice five round fight, and losing to Blanchfield is something a lot of contenders will have to start coming to terms with.

Moving forward though, expect to see Andrade take a layoff due to fighting twice in two months. The fight that may make the most sense for her on her return is the winner of Viviane Araujo vs. Amanda Ribas.

Andrade’s Next Fight: Viviane Araujo vs. Amanda Ribas Winner

Jordan Wright

Unfortunately for Jordan Wright, he was unable to snap a three fight losing skid now finding himself without a win in four fights. Since his emergence in the promotion in 2020, he has only managed to pick up two victories in seven fights, leaving a lot to be desired.

The fact that this was the co-main event of the evening speaks volumes as to the complaints the majority of fans have made. “The Beverley Hills Ninja” may find himself back fighting on the regional scene for his next fight.

Having said that, Wright is always involved in entertaining fights which may help his case. If he sticks around for one more shot, someone like William Knight or Aleksa Camur could work.

Wright’s Next Fight: William Knight or Aleksa Camur

Josh Parisian

Parisian found himself on the wrong side of a decision loss to Contender Series alum Jamal Pogues, who made his promotional debut at UFC Vegas 69.

With that, and the fact that the fighters near his skillset are all booked, how about a date with Mohammed Usman?

The Ultimate Fighter 30 winner is yet to fight under the promotional banner since being crowned victorious on TUF 30, so Josh Parisian can welcome him to the most threadbare male division in the UFC.

Parisian’s Next Fight: Mohammed Usman

William Knight

Performances don’t get much more passive than William Knight’s against Marcin Prachnio this past weekend.

Prachnio kicked at the base of Knight, now allowing him to load up any of his shots. But he didn’t throw anything anyway, never mind anything of the powerful variety. Throughout 15 minutes, “The Knightmare” Knight threw just eight punches, total.

With that now being three losses in a row, and due to the nature of this one, don’t be surprised to see the 34-year-old cut from the promotion.

Due to his performance being so lacklustre and the criticism he’s faced, matchmaking for the hard hitter becomes very difficult if he stays. Aside from Jordan Wright, as suggested above, the only thing that would make sense is the winner of Ed Herman vs. Zak Cummings.

Knight’s Next Fight: Winner of Ed Herman vs. Zak Cummings or Jordan Wright

Jim Miller

Still going strong is the 39-year-old lightweight Jim Miller. Not only that but he also put on an extremely competitive fight against the hungry Alexander Hernandez at UFC Vegas 69.

Coming up just short halts his three fight win streak; a fourth straight win would’ve been the first time he’d been able to hit that mark since 2010.

With Miller having being round since 2008, finding someone he hasn’t already fought becomes difficult. Chris Gruetzemacher could be the type of name that makes the most sense for Miller in his next outing. Outside of putting Miller in there with a young hungry opponent, there aren’t many options.

Miller’s Next Fight: Chris Gruetzemacher

It was back to light heavyweight for William Knight at UFC Vegas 69 on Saturday, where he was paired up with Poland’s Marcin Prachnio.

Both fighters entered the night looking to shake off recent losses — two straight in the case of Knight, who returned to 205 pounds after two bouts at heavyweight.

Pracnio relied on his kicks early, trying to keep the powerful Knight on the outside. The Polish fighter was executing a very deliberate game plan, and through two minutes, Knight had thrown all of one strike. This slow, calculated approach continued, with Knight firing a kick or two, but little else. Big big man was essentially stuck outside, unable to make anything happen through the first round. Pracnio’s game plan was low action, but he was still connecting with kicks on a regular basis.

Early in the second, Knight wagged his finger at Pracnio, which was the closest thing to a punch he had thrown. Knight’s leg, meanwhile, appeared damage. He finally got off a heavy leg kick, but Prachnio returned fire with a kick upstairs. Pracnio was throwing three or four kicks for every… well, Knight had really only landed the one kick. Another Pracnio kick landed as Knight hopped on his good leg. Knight fanned on a spinning kick, and heading towards the end of the second, was in single-digits in terms of offense. He finally closed the distance for a takedown attempt that was fought off. Prachnio lit up Knight’s leg some more before the end of the round.

Prachnio fired a high kick to open the third. Knight landed a low kick. The pair traded kicks. Knight landed a leg kick, Prachnio returned fire with far greater effect. Knight would struggle to mount any offense the entire fight, catching another kick but failing to capitalize on it. At one point he chose to exchange leg kicks — bad idea. Prachnio opened up at the end of the fight, firing a head kick, spinning wheel kick, and a spinning kick to the leg before the horn sounded.

Las Vegas, NV — It’s been ten months since he last fought, and William Knight is ready to start 2023 off on the right foot.

That, after Knight (11-4) had a rough go of things both in and out of the cage last year.

“Last year was crazy. I lost two fights, I lost two family members, I lost a lot of things,” Knight told media outlets including Cageside Press during Wednesday’s media day. “That’s the past, right? Only thing I can think of now is just redemption. Climbing up to where I once was, back to the top.”

Knight was supposed to face opponent Marcin Prachnio in the fall, only to pull out of the fight after tweaking his knee. It was a situation that the 34-year old might have fought through in the past, but seeing a number of other fighters suffer knee injuries was a sign.

Knight also alluded to Darrick Minner fighting injured earlier that same month as a reason he chose not to fight through the ailment.

“The health thing — I seen something with the UFC before, with Dana White last year. A fighter went into a fight injured, and his coach knew he was injured or something, and they got in trouble for it. I don’t want that outcome for my team.”

Minner and has coach, James Krause, remain under investigation by the Nevada Athletic Commission regarding the featherweight showing up injured to his November 5 bout with Shayilan Nuerdanbieke. A betting scandal also erupted after large amounts of money came in on Nuerdanbieke prior to the bout.

As for Knight, he’s happy just competing, regardless of the opponent. “As long as I’m fighting, I’m fine,” he stated. “I don’t even care [about] the opponent. As you’ve seen, I took two last minute, short-notice fights. That’s what I’m here for, to fight.”

Knight has stated consistently that he doesn’t watch tape of his opponents, and explained why that remains that case. It boils down to the fact that in the modern era, fighters have become true mixed martial artists.

“At the end of the day, a hybrid fighter — I call them hybrids now, they’re not one-trick ponies like they used to be, we’re hybrids with four, five, six, seven different styles of martial arts — one would assume that this person would come back fighting the same,” suggested Knight. “That’s not the case today. Every fighter is looking to improve, and if I’m looking for something in their last fight, I’m sorely mistaken.”

Instead, Knight lets his coach “do what he needs to do, and then he trains me accordingly.”

Should he pick up the win over Prachnio at UFC Vegas 69, William Knight knows exactly who he wants next.

“Carlos Ulberg. [Israel] Adesanya’s teammate. He beat an opponent that I lost to years ago,” stated Knight, in reference to shared opponent Tafon Nchukwi. “The second he beat this guy, he started running his mouth on Twitter. He tagged me in some sh*t. And to be realistic, that fight needs to happen.”

“So after Saturday, that’s who I’m after. He ran his mouth, and he needs to put his money where his mouth is. I’m here for that fight. Because when I called him out, it was ‘oh. it’s June, it’s this, it’s this.’ Now he caught a little W, and he wants to run his mouth. I’m ready for it.”

Las Vegas, NV – UFC light heavyweight Marcin Prachnio waited patiently for his bout with William Knight and it finally arrives at UFC Vegas 69 on Saturday night at the UFC APEX.

“Yeah I was supposed to be here a few months back. Something happen, not to me, to my opponent to William Knight,” Prachnio told Cageside Press among other media on Wednesday.

Prachnio (15-6) said he found out about Knight withdrawing from their original booking a little over a week before the fight was supposed to happen.

“One day before the flight to US I was like so disappointed. We rescheduled the fight. (We’re) here now, let’s go,” he said.

Prachnio said the UFC offered up some replacement opponents, but the style was different than what he trained for against Knight that it didn’t make sense to him to take short-notice fighter.

“It was like a really different fighter so was like no sense to make this fight that time,” said Prachnio.

Instead the bout was rescheduled for UFC Vegas 69 on Feb. 18 at the UFC APEX.

“We prepared for the guy (Knight) already like three-and-a-half months so it was good to keep the same guy. Probably for him the same because then you need to prepare for somebody else completely different,” he said.

Once Prachnio got to the states he took a trip to Los Angeles, CA where he took a photo with Muhammad Ali’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“One of the best boxers in history. He’s a legend you know. I always look for his fights. He was the greatest.”

The featured preliminary fight at UFC Vegas 51 featured light heavyweights moved up a weight class, as Devin Clark took on William Knight.

And my oh my, was Clark ever settled in as a heavyweight, tipping the scales just north of 250 pounds. A massive amount of weight, given he had regularly competed at 205 pounds — though a big miss at the scales in his last fight had necessitated the move.

Clark, for his part, had actually debuted in the UFC as a middleweight. Now, he was taking his first fight at heavyweight, in what was likely a temporary move.

Both fighters took the center of the octagon after a touch of gloves. A high kick from Clark started the fight, followed by a calf kick from Knight. A straight right from Clark landed, and Clark then shot for takedown. Knight locked on with a tight guillotine, but Clark defended. Knight had Clark in a headlock for a good three minutes and then landed a flying knee flush. Knight charged Clark and landed some power shots, but Clark eventually landed a takedown and put Knight against the fence. The round ended with both fighters in the center of the cage, with Clark missing a high kick.

Two hard low kicks from Clark started round two. Clark threw his teep kick again, and it barely missed. Clark landed a hard right hand and immediately followed that up with a takedown. Not much action happened; however, Clark had a big cut on his cheek. Clark finally landed an elbow and almost locked up an arm triangle. With less than 10 seconds left in the round, Knight exploded up and landed a half suplex takedown of his own to end the round.

Round three started with a high kick from Clark that partially landed. A right hand, calf kick combo landed from Clark. A body kick from Knight landed. Clark landed a right cross, and takedown but Knight got back up to his feet a lot sooner. Knight got back to his feet but Clark put him against the fence. Clark landed a left hook that hurt Knight, followed by a right hand that put Knight down. That was all she wrote!

A pair of UFC light heavyweights will fight up a weight class in two weeks.

MMA Junkie was the first to report the news that William Knight and Devin Clark will fight on April 16 at UFC Fight Night: Luque vs. Muhammad 2. The catch is that the fight will be at heavyweight as it will be on short notice. Knight would confirm the news on social media.

Clark (12-6) is in need of a victory when he steps into the octagon on April 16. “Brown Bear” has dropped his last two fights. In November 2020, he competed in his first UFC main event against Anthony Smith, but he fell via first-round submission. In his most recent outing, he lost to Ion Cutelaba via unanimous decision.

Knight (11-3) had his two-fight win streak snapped in February when he lost a unanimous decision to Maxim Grishin at UFC 272. The fight had plenty of controversy surrounding it, as Knight weighed in 218 pounds, 12 pounds over the light heavyweight limit, making it the biggest weight miss in UFC history. The fight was moved up a weight class as a result. Prior to his loss, he beat Alonzo Menifield and knocked out Fabio Cherant.

The UFC’s April 16 Fight Night event is expected to take place at the Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fight card currently looks like this:

Vicente Luque vs. Belal Muhammad

Rafa García vs. Jesse Ronson

Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Wu Yanan

Chris Barnett vs. Martin Buday

Heili Alateng vs. Kevin Croom

Drakkar Klose vs. Brandon Jenkins

Miguel Baeza vs. André Fialho

Caio Borralho vs. Gadzhi Omargadzhiev

Lina Länsberg vs. Pannie Kianzad

Uriah Hall vs. André Muniz

Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos vs. Mounir Lazzez

Jordan Leavitt vs. Trey Ogden

Sam Hughes vs. Istela Nunes

TJ Laramie vs. Pat Sabatini

William Knight vs. Devin Clark

UFC 271’s curtain jerker was not supposed to be a heavyweight match-up. In fact, it wasn’t supposed to open up the Houston card at all. But after William Knight blew weight by a full 12 pounds for his light heavyweight bout with Maxim Grishin, the fight was moved up a full weight class — and demoted to the early prelims.

In any other weight class, there wouldn’t have been a fight at all. But with Grishin weighing in at 206lbs on Friday, right at the light heavyweight upper limit, and having competed as a heavyweight before, the bout was at least salvaged.

The early going of Knight vs. Grishin, when it did arrive Saturday, was a measured affair. The pair traded kicks, Knight firing a few to the body. Grishin went with outside leg kicks, and drew first blood, so to speak, when he cracked Knight with a head kick. Knight was able to shrug it off, but the height and reach advantage of Maxim Grishin had made itself felt. Grishin would fire that high kick again about a minute and a half later, but telegraphed it. Through most of the first round, Knight was on his back foot, Grishin keeping him at the end of his strikes.

Knight opened round two with a leg kick, then fired a spinning kick that fell well short. It was something of a low-percentage attack, but William went back to some of his flashier kicks more than once. Grishin, meanwhile, kept things simple, and a low calf kick had the desired effect, Knight pulling the limb back. Shortly after, Grishin landed a right hand, which prompted Knight to change levels for a takedown. Just when it looked like the takedown was all but stuffed, Knight forced Grishin down. As the Russian started to get up, Knight essentially executed a belly-to-back suplex, only for Grishin to turn and land on top. They’d make it back up with about a minute to go, Grishin again connecting with a low kick.

William Knight took a big swing, but found only air to kick off the third round against Maxim Grishin. He’d then bully Grishin to the fence, landing a spinning back fist while off-balance, only for Grishin to land a counter. This time, Grishin was able to stay on his feet and reverse. Knight, however, returned the favor, reversing again. Grishin answered by escaping out to the side. Knight would then land a jab, and double up on it moments later, backing Grishin up to the fence again. Knight went after a single leg takedown, and though it wasn’t there, Grishin fired a lazy body kick which Knight easily caught, dumping Grishin. That could have been a game-changer for Knight, but Grishin was able to escape.

While Grishin looked to be tiring in the final round, it was far too late for Knight to mount a comeback. Grishin would take the win on the scorecards — in a bout many fighters might have declined, given the enormous miss at the scales on Friday.

Official Result: Maxim Grishin def. William Knight by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

The largest weight miss in UFC history has necessitated a fight moving up an entire weight class for UFC 271 this Saturday.

Friday morning, light heavyweight William Knight hit the scales at 118 pounds for his fight with Maxim Grishin. That miss, a full 12 pounds over the non-title limit for the weight class, marks the largest miss in UFC history.

The previous record holder was Rafael Alves, who missed weight by 11.5 pounds for a featherweight fight last year.

Knight’s opponent, Grishin, had already weighed in at 206 pounds, leading to the very real possibility that the fight would be cancelled. Instead, shortly after Knight’s miss, UFC officials announced that the bout have been shifted to the heavyweight division.

Though it was initially unclear whether Grishin (32-9-1) would receive a percentage of Knight’s fight purse, as would be the case when a fighter normally misses weight, promotion officials later confirmed Knight would cough up 40%. Regardless, the Russian has accepted the bout up a weight class — though Grishin is no stranger to the heavyweight division. He actually started his UFC career there, in a losing effort against Marcin Tybura.

For Knight (11-2), the mishap at the scales is his first time missing weight in the UFC. Prior to joining the promotion, he did compete at heavyweight once, under the CES MMA banner.

UFC 271 goes down Saturday, February 12, 2022 at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX. The following fights are attached:

Israel Adesanya (c) vs. Robert Whittaker — for the UFC middleweight championship

Derrick Lewis vs. Tai Tuivasa

Jared Cannonier vs. Derek Brunson

Bobby Green vs. Nasrat Haqparast

Andrei Arlovski vs. Jared Vanderaa

William Knight earned a unanimous decision in a battle of big boys at UFC Vegas 44, showing enough urgency to defeat Alonzo Menifield.

Two hulking light heavyweights collided as part of the UFC Vegas 44 preliminary card on Saturday. With both men coming off wins back in August, that bout saw Alonzo Menifield and William Knight throw down.

Menifield let two punches fly right after the glove touch and continued to walk forward. Knight responded with with a single-leg takedown, but Menifield reversed him on the way down to land in top position in side control. After a period of top control, Knight slipped out the back door and quickly mounted Menifield, then took his back. Knight was trying to sink in a choke, but Menifield was able to explode out of it and stand up, pushing Knight against the fence. Knight established a headlock with his back to the fence. Menifield was able to get out of the position and landed a clean right hand in the center of the cage. Knight charged back in with a leg kick. Menifield then landed another right that was answered by a huge knockdown by Knight. Knight defended a desperation takedown from Menifield by throwing him into full mount at the end of the round.

Menifield began the second round with a heavy combination that forced Knight to run away. After they re-engaged, Menifield connected with a big right hand. The momentum stayed on Menifield’s side as he kept control of the Octagon. Neither fighter was connecting with much as Menifield continued to keep Knight at bay. Big hooks were traded at the very end of the round, with Knight backing Menifield up with a head kick followed by a big hook.

Menifield landed a big overhand to start the round and Knight punched his way into a clinch. Menifield used that clinch to drive Knight into the cage. The fight stayed against the cage for over three minutes before Knight was able to push away. Knight threw some late punches to leave an impression on the judges’ minds.

Official Result: William Knight def. Alonzo Menifield by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
