Undefeated bantamweight Farid Basharat looked to maintain his perfect record at UFC 308, paired up with Brazil’s Victor Hugo.

Hugo, known as “Striker,” was a Contender Series alum who had come in as a bantamweight. No stranger to 145lbs, he was making his return to the weight class on Saturday. The only problem was, the fight had been booked as a bantamweight bout – instead, with Hugo missing weight by 10.5 pounds, the affair was shifted up a weight class, with a game Basharat rehydrating before weighing in at 137 pounds on Friday.

Hugo looked massive on fight night and entered the cage with a noticeable size advantage. In the opening minutes, Hugo pressured forward as Basharat looked to counter from the outside. Hugo attempted a leg lock submission that Basharat defended well, escaping to his feet. With a minute left in the first round Hugo walked into a straight right hand from Basharat, that stunned the Brazilian prospect.

Basharat showed new sense of urgency in round two walking down Hugo and landing big straight right hands in the opening moments. Midway through the second round Basharat had out landed Hugo in significant strikes 33 to 18. Hugo started pointing at the ground, asking Basharat to exchange. Throughout the contest Basharat was routinely landing a spinning elbow that significantly slowed down Hugo.

Hugo defended a takedown in the first minute of round three. As Basharat retreated, Hugo landed an uppercut followed by a spinning back kick that floored the undefeated contender. Basharat quickly recovered against the cage. In he middle of the third, Basharat was able to control Hugo against the cage and on the ground while defending against submissions. As Hugo tried to get back to his feet, Basharat jumped to back control threatening a rear naked choke.

After a competitive fifteen minutes Basharat out-landed Hugo in total strikes 69-46, while also landing four takedowns. The judges all scored the contest unanimously for Basharat.

Official Result: Farid Basharat def. Victor Hugo by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

A pair of bantamweight bouts have been added to next month’s UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi.

On Wednesday, UFC officials announced the addition of Said Nurmagomedov vs. Daniel Santos and Farid Basharat vs. Victor Hugo to the Pay-Per-View card. The event takes place on October 26, 2024 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Basharat vs. Hugo had previously been reported by Ag.Fight, but not confirmed by promotion officials until now.

Nurmagomedov (18-3) has posted a 7-2 record thus far in his UFC run. He will be returning to action for the first time since October 2023, where he picked up a submission win against ONE Championship vet Muin Gafurov. Nurmagomedov was expected to face Montel Jackson in June, but withdrew from the bout.

Opponent Santos (11-2) has earned back-to-back wins over Johnny Munoz Jr. and John Castaneda.

Farid Basharat (12-0) remains a top, undefeated prospect. Representing Afghanistan, Basharat most recently earned a unanimous decision victory over Taylor Lapilus. He takes on Victor Hugo (25-4), a Brazilian with over twice the experience of his opponent.

UFC 308 is headlined by a featherweight title fight featuring champ Ilia Topuria taking on Max Holloway. The co-main event sees the long-awaited clash between middleweight contenders Robert Whittaker and Khamzat Chimaev finally (hopefully) transpire.

The following bouts have been reported for the card thus far:

Ilia Topuria (c) vs. Max Holloway – for the UFC featherweight championship

Robert Whittaker vs. Khamzat Chimaev

Brazilian standout Pedro Falcao, a 2021 Contender Series winner who was snubbed of a contract despite a KO finish, finally made his way to the octagon on Saturday, paired up with Victor Hugo.

Falcao had accepted the UFC Vegas 90 bantamweight fight on all of four days’ notice; how that impacted his performance would be something to keep an eye on.

Falcao out of the gate was aggressive and closed the distance getting Hugo to the mat. He got on the back for a second but Hugo was able to get back to his feet. Hugo was dealing with a lot of forward pressure. He landed a heavy outside leg kick but Falcao was in on a leg soon after. Hugo got space and was throwing a ton of kicks getting some momentum. As he was pouring on the pressure he kicked Falcao in the groin pausing the fight. It really hurt Hugo as he was really pouring it on. That’s basically how the round ended.

In round two Falcao was bringing the pressure. Huge was calm and picking at Falcao with the kicks. Even landing a spinning kick to the body. Falcao would close the distance but couldn’t get Hugo down. Falcao was visibly tired and Hugo landed a hard outside leg kick. Falcao timed a nice entry into a double leg but didn’t seem to have the gas to complete it. He got in on a single leg but didn’t get that either. A spinning elbow missed from Hugo but again, Falcao couldn’t capitalize with a takedown. Falcao was at least controlling a large position of the round in the clinch. Hugo ended the round throwing his kicks to the leg, body, and the teep to the body.

In the final round, Hugo dropped Falcao early with a check left hook. He let Falcao back up but he recovered quickly. He took a head kick right after but he was right on the gas. Hugo landed a heavy spinning kick to the body that got a reaction from Falcao. It was to the groin but the ref failed to stop it. Falcao slowed it down with a takedown attempt but can’t actually ever get the fight down. He had a lot of good opportunities but Hugo continued to fight the wrist well. With a little over a minute left Falcao turned it up letting his hands go and was finding the target. Hugo did land a buckling leg kick but it wasn’t slowing Falcao down. Falcao didn’t trust his hands enough as he just looked to cage wrestle up until the final bell.

Official Result: Victor Hugo def. Pedro Falcao by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

A Brazilian talent training with the famed Nova Uniao, Pedro Falcao makes his arrival in the UFC this Saturday. A 2021 Contender Series alum who won on the show, the Shooto Brasil alum has been paired up with Victor Hugo in a bantamweight bout on the UFC Vegas 90 card.

Pedro “Pedrinho” Falcão
Standing at five-foot-six
Fighting at 135 lbs (bantamweight)
31-years-old
Fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Training out of Nova Uniao
A pro record of 16-3
6 KO/TKOs, 5 Submissions

How Falcao will fare in the UFC:

Falcao is one of the most respected and underrated guys out of Brazil. He’s not really thought about because of his activity. Falcao is a main coach out of Nova Uniao so he’s been in there with some high-level dudes. He did fight and won on the Contender Series in 2021. Even with a knockout, he wasn’t signed oddly. He returned to the cage last November and got another win which led to this opportunity.

Falcao is a grappler but has to be taken seriously on the feet as well. He’s got a crisp lead left hook and a good right hand. He’ll lull guys into his striking and then shoot takedowns. Falcao, over the course of his career, has been able to get takedowns in many different ways. Falcao has an excellent single-leg takedown. If he doesn’t get it from there he has shown he can chain wrestle to the back and get the takedown from there. Defensively his takedown defense is solid and so is his defensive grappling.

Falcao is a major threat on the mat with a legit jiu-jitsu black belt. He has a good blend of submissions and ground and pound. As shown on the Contender Series he can shut the lights out with his ground and pound. Falcao has five submission wins and while he does favor going after the neck he will also go after an arm. He doesn’t take a lot of risks as he’s precise in everything he does.

High-level jiu-jitsu, submission threat, solid wrestling, well-conditioned and good enough striking. I have high hopes for Falcao but I know he hasn’t fought an actual good opponent in a long time. He’s fought experienced guys but the record is a little bit padded. Saying that, he doesn’t have any glaring holes so Falcao has a high ceiling despite being thirty-one.

How Falcao matches up with Hugo:

Hugo started off his career more as a grappler but has branched off as a striker later in his run. He did go back to his roots last fight winning with a knee bar to win a contract on the Contender Series. I don’t think Hugo wants to try his luck with Falcao on the mat because I’d think his BJJ is on another level. Overall I’ve been more impressed with Falcao. He is taking this fight on four days’ notice which could affect his cardio. If he fights how he normally does I think he’s on another level compared to Hugo.
