UFC Vegas 109 was headlined by a middleweight clash between two fighters at the edge of the top 10. Roman Dolidze and Anthony Hernandez were on a combined ten-fight win streak entering this contest in the hopes that a victory would secure a shot at the top five. In the co-main event, former title challenger Steve Erceg was looking to finally get his hand raised again, while the feature bout offered a meeting between two ranked strawweights. With another event behind us, let’s look ahead to what potential matchups we could be looking forward to.

Anthony Hernandez

Winner of now eight straight, Anthony Hernandez looked as polished as ever on Saturday when he dominated Roman Dolidze on his way to a fourth-round submission. With that rear-naked choke, “Fluffy” became the first fighter to finish Dolidze. While the performance was impressive and so was the result, unfortunately for him, middleweight isn’t lacking in contenders right now. Reinier de Ridder has all the wind in his sails as he just broke into the top5, there’s a title eliminator going down in Paris a month from now, and big names like Sean Strickland and Israel Adesanya are always lurking. Could Hernandez call out and get one of those two former champions? It’s possible, but not probable.

I believe the winner of the Paris main event between Nassourdine Imavov and Caio Borralho will be awarded the next title shot. With so many consequential bouts in the near future, we sometimes forget that the losers of those bouts will also need opponents. That’s why I had RDR matched up with the loser of next week’s title fight when he won in Abu Dhabi. With Adesanya and Strickland seemingly in no hurry to book their next one, that leaves Fluffy with the loser of the Paris main event. I thought about Robert Whittaker, but I think Bobby Knuckles will take a break, while Fluffy appears to want to get to the belt as soon as possible.

Hernandez’s next fight: Imavov/Borralho loser

Steve Erceg

Seventeen months removed from his last victory, Steve Erceg finally got back in the win column at UFC Vegas 109, earning a hard-fought unanimous decision win over Ode’ Osbourne. Yes, Osbourne had lost three of his last four coming in and took the fight on short notice, but getting a win of any kind was an encouraging sight for the Australian. This win shouldn’t propel him back with the top dogs of the division, but it should be enough to just re-book the original Alex Perez matchup. Perez and Erceg are two fighters who fans know are very skilled and much better than their records would indicate of late. Let’s see which one of the two can get back in the mix.

Erceg’s next fight: Alex Perez

Iasmin Lucindo

The youngster Lucindo had been impressive in her UFC run thus far, until she ran into Amanda Lemos in March. Lucindo wasn’t able to use her athletic gifts against the equally athletic, but much more experienced Lemos. She looked completely outmatched in her last outing, but this was a nice bounce back performance over the litmus test of the division in Angela Hill. Another fighter who looked promising until she ran into a top five opponent was Tabatha Ricci. Ricci had posted a very good 6-1 record at strawweight before she hit a roadblock against Yan Xiaonan. Ricci then rebounded nicely against Amanda Ribas, another one of those gatekeeping types. Why not match Ricci with Lucindo to see which of the two can string two wins together and earn a second crack at the top five?

Lucindo’s next fight: Tabatha Ricci

Andre Fili

The savvy veteran “Touchy” Fili has been juggling wins and losses for years, now. While he has failed to win consecutive fights since 2019, he always shows impressive levels of ability against a very respectable strength of schedule. With this split decision win against a Christian Rodriguez seven years his junior, could Fili stop another young prospect in his track? Let’s say, someone like wrestling powerhouse Isaac Dulgarian. It’s often ill-advised to take MMA math at face value, but to the extent that it offers any sort of relevant information, his latest win would tell us that Fili has a good chance to beat Dulgarian.

Fili’s next fight: Isaac Dulgarian

Jean Matsumoto

Matsumoto came within a hair of defeating Rob Font in February and breaking into the rankings at just 25 years of age. He lost a split decision that some people thought could have gone his way. Same story, different result this time around, as he won a split decision in a fun scrap at UFC Vegas 109 that could have gone against him. Miles Johns was a proper opponent for the youngster coming off that Font fight and he passed the test. There are quite a few names within that tier that Matsumoto could face next such as Davey Grant, Brady Hiestand or Da’Mon Blackshear, but I went with Victor Henry, who I think is equally tricky on the feet as he in on the ground.

Matsumoto’s next fight: Victor Henry

Christian Leroy Duncan

Even though he was victorious in his last outing, it still felt like CLD needed a “bounce back win” this weekend against Eryk Anders. He’s had a couple of nice finishes in the UFC, but his last fight in March was such a stinker that this first-round KO was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Englishman. Anders has had a decent career in the promotion, but Duncan showed how much of a difference being eight years younger can make. The exciting parts of CLD’s game can be quite entertaining, so why not put him up against someone who will bring the best out of him? Someone like Brazilian striker Marco Tulio, who’s had two knockouts so far in his rookie year.

Leroy Duncan’s next fight: Marco Tulio

UFC Vegas 109 featured another card of APEX fights with an extended, six-fight main card. The co-main event featured former bantamweight title challenger, Steve Erceg, taking on a short notice opponent in Ode Osbourne. And in the main event, a ranked middleweight matchup saw Roman Dolidze lose to Anthony Hernandez, in what was a very important bout for the division. Lots of veterans on this edition of losers and some even matchups moving forward.

Roman Dolidze

Anthony Hernandez dragged Roman Dolidze into deep waters and submitted him in the fourth round of their main event on Saturday. Dolidze entered the fight ranked at #9 at 185lbs, while Hernandez was ranked at #10. The loss snapped a three-fight win streak for Dolidze that saw him beating the likes of Anthony Smith, Kevin Holland and Marvin Vettori from June 2024 to earlier this year in March. This loss will likely drop Roman out of the top 10 but he’ll likely remain ranked.

A good next matchup for Dolidze would be against the loser of Jared Cannonier vs Michael Page. Offering Dolidze another fresh matchup is a good idea, and this would fit the bill (No Vettori III matchup). Cannonier is currently the #8 ranked middleweight while MVP is ranked at #15 at welterweight and unranked at middleweight. This fight goes down on UFC 319 on August 16 so the timing would be fine. If Cannonier loses he will have lost three of his last four, while Page would be 2-2 in the UFC. Dolidze was matched against Jared back in 2023, but Cannonier withdrew due to a torn MCL (knee injury). Either fighter would offer an exciting striking match for fans. Winner of this bout would be ranked within the top 10.

Doldize’s next fight: Jared Cannonier vs. Michael Page Loser

Ode Osbourne

Steve Erceg defeated Ode Osbourne via unanimous decision on Saturday, in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 109. Erceg entered the fight ranked at #10 in the division while Ode was unranked. While it’s worth noting that Osbourne was not Erceg’s original opponent (Alex Perez, injured- Hyun Sung Park, rebooked) the loss still puts him in a somewhat precarious position.

Osbourne has now lost four of his last five fights dating to early 2023. His only win during this time period was against an undefeated Contender Series product making his debut, Luis Gurule.

With that said, Ode’s next fight should be against Carlos Hernandez. Carlos is a 2021 Contender Series alum that is currently 3-4 with the UFC. Carlos has lost three of his last four fights dating back to December 2023 but against good competition (Tatsuro Taira, Rei Tsuruya and Hyun Sung Park) Osbourne and Hernandez have hovered at around the same level within the division for a couple years-and they have both lost to high level competition. It’d be a great matchup for that reason. Two Contender Series vets that have yet to secure that big win against elite competition. Loser of this bout could be in a rough place with the winner gaining a lot of visibility.

Osbourne’s next fight: Carlos Hernandez

Angela Hill

Iasmin Lucindo outfought Angela Hill on her way to a unanimous decision victory on Saturday. Lucindo entered the cage Saturday ranked at #8 in the women’s strawweight division while Hill was ranked at #12. Hill is 13-15 during her now 11-year stint with the promotion. She’s 2-3 in her last five fights since November of 2023. If you can believe it, Hill turned 40 earlier this year- she’s still a competitor with her last three losses coming to the very respectable, ranked, opponents of Mackenzie Dern, Tabatha Ricci and Iasmin Lucindo.

Angela’s next fight should be against Denise Gomes. Even though the pair shared the octagon less than two years ago, both fighters have had trajectories where it makes sense to meet again.

Denise is undefeated in the UFC since her fight with Angela. She beat an undefeated Eduarda Moura via split decision and veteran Karolina Kowalkiewicz via unanimous decision last year. Gomes also finished Elise Reed early in the second round back in mid-May. Considering Hill has fought virtually everyone, and that she likely to remain in the rankings after this fight, this is a matchup that makes sense. Denise is ranked at #15 in the division. This fight could sneak onto the main card of a decent Fight Night card. Loser would be out of the rankings.

Hill’s next fight: Denise Gomes rematch

Christian Rodriguez

Andre Fili and Christian Rodriguez put on a good scrap on Saturday, but Fili edged out ‘CeeRod’ on the scorecards, securing a split decision victory.

Rodriguez is now on a two-fight skid and has lost three of his last four fights dating back to July of last year. Christian’s only win in that time period came against an undefeated 2024 Contender Series alum making his UFC debut (Austin Bashi).

Rodriguez who has broken the hearts of multiple hot prospects (Raul Rosas Jr, Cameron Saaiman and Austin Bashi) is still trying to carve out a path for himself at 145lbs. after struggling with the cut down to 135lbs. It’s been 5-fights since Rodriguez moved up so hopefully, he can start to put it together.

The next opponent for Rodriguez should be Shayilan Nuerdabiekke. Shayilan is just 3-3 in the UFC but is 39-12 as a pro. Shayilan is also on a two-fight skid. He was last in the octagon in June of last year when he was submitted in the final round by Melquizael Costa. Melquizael also holds a unanimous decision victory over Rodriguez from when the pair fought in March. These two fighters are right on the same level and hopefully Nuerdanbiekke could be ready whenever for the timing to matchup. Easy sleep fight for a feature preliminary bout or first fight on the main card of a fight night.

Rodriguez’s next fight: Shayilan Nuerdanbiekke

Miles Johns

Jean Matsumoto snagged a split decision victory over Miles Johns in a hard fought three rounder on Saturday. With the loss Miles is now on a two-fight losing streak. Before that, he was on a four-fight unbeaten streak.

The move for Miles here is to revisit his previously cancelled matchup with the former UFC Bantamweight Champion, Cody Garbrandt. Lots of visibility and a huge upside in that matchup for Miles. The two were scheduled to fight back in October and then November of last year. Fight was ultimately cancelled after Garbrandt suffered an injury. Since then, Garbrandt has lost a unanimous decision to Ranoi Barcelos, back in mid-June. Timing could make sense especially as Cody has been taking more time between fights recently. Easy one to book on the main card of a fight night between these two dangerous bantamweights. Winner wouldn’t be but a win or two away from fighting for a ranking.

Johns’ next fight: Cody Garbrandt

Eyrk Anders

Christian Leroy Duncan kicked off the main card of UFC Vegas 109 with a spectacular spinning elbow finish of Eryk Anders. 38-year-old Anders has now gone 2-2 in his last four fights since June of 2023. Both of his victories during the time period are against fighters who are no longer with the promotion (Chris Weidman and Jamie Pickett).

With that being said, Anders is in a little bit of a hot seat but with the wild state of the UFC’s middleweight division, truly anything is possible. A good next matchup for Anders would be against Andrey Pulyaev. Andrey is a 27-year-old prospect off last year’s season of the Contender Series. Pulyaev made his UFC debut in March against ‘CLD’ and lost a unanimous decision. In August Andrey stopped Nick Klein in the second with a body kick and punches. Eryk would be even more of a litmus test for the 10-3, 6’4″, Russian. A different look. This could also be a good fight for Eyrk for where he’s at in his career currently; to prove he’s still got it.

Anders’ next fight: Andrey Pulyaev

Forget a Fight of the Night – there were too many deserving individual performances at UFC Vegas 109 to award one of those.

Instead, four fighters picked up $50,000 U.S. Performance of the Night bonuses following a Fight Night event at the Apex that, if lacking in relevance outside of the main event, produced plenty of explosive moments.

The most explosive of those came when second-generation UFC star Elijah Smith, with proud pop Gilbert Smith in his corner, landed a Rampage Jackson-style slam knockout on Toshiomi Kazama in the opening round of their bantamweight fight. Rampage did that during his prime at 205lbs; seeing Smith hoist up his opponent and, at 135, still have the power to put him to sleep was impressive.

Technically, the follow-up strikes might have done that, but Kazama had been knocked senseless by the slam itself. Unfortunately the ref, probably caught as unaware as the rest of us given the rarity of slam KOs, was just a step slow in making the save.

Kazama was transported to hospital and released later in the evening, per the UFC Vegas 109 broadcast.

UFC Vegas 109 headliner Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez was another Performance bonus winner on Saturday. After controlling Roman Dolidze and wearing him down for three rounds, he secured a rear-naked choke in the fourth to end the fight inside the distance. “Secure” is a word we’re using loosely here, as Hernandez wasn’t in position, and in fact was still standing and stepping backwards when an exhausted Dolidze tapped.

Christian Leroy Duncan, who finished Eryk Anders, and Joselyn Edwards, for her stoppage of Priscila Cachoeira, were the remaining two bonus-winners on Saturday.

Closing out the show at UFC Vegas 109 on Saturday were top 10 ranked middleweights Roman Dolidze and Anthony Hernandez.

Dolidze and “Fluffy” were neck-and-neck in the 185lb rankings, with Dolidze in the #9 spot, and Hernandez ranked at #10.

Just 15 seconds in, Hernandez changed levels, and Dolidze went to his back, threatening with a leg lock. That had Hernandez opting to pull back. The pair then exchanged low kicks, with Dolidze adding a couple of extras. A left hook followed for the Georgian, who had bantamweight champ Merab Dvalishvili in his corner on Saturday.

About 90 seconds in, Dolidze and Hernandez tied up along the fence after a pretty solid exchange. They would stay there for about 30 seconds, Dolidze proving to have a slight edge in strength. Hernandez, however, went to the head with his hands and the body with a kick moments that, then drove Dolidze into the fence before dragging the Georgian to his knees. Again, Dolidze attacked with the leg lock, forcing Hernandez to retreat once more.

Round two saw Dolidze touching Hernandez with inside leg kicks again, but Hernandez soon shot into a takedown. When Dolidze welcomed fighting off his back, Hernandez allowed him back up. “Fluffy” began mixing up his hands and kicks, with Dolidze answering care of some clubbing blows. Soon, Hernandez had drawn Dolidze into a brawl, and was walking forward, chirping and jawing at the Georgian. Hernandez then mixed things up, forcing a tiring Dolidze to the ground in what looked like an easy takedown. Then, Hernandez let him back up. Inside leg kick, combo, rinse, repeat for Hernandez. A couple of slick feints, a standing elbow, and another takedown hit the mark for Hernandez. Dolidze rolled into a leg lock, and Hernandez scrambled out of it.

The next exchange saw Dolidze hurt and retreating, only to be taken down again. Hernandez then went after a guillotine, though he was out of position for it. A knee to the body landed for Hernandez, who then went Donkey Kong on Dolidze. Ref Herb Dean then pulled Hernandez off, and he began celebrating, only for Dean to inform the corners that the fight was still on – the round was just over.

It was right back to the ground in round three, Dolidze giving up his back. Hernandez let him up again, just wearing the Georgian down. Hernandez then pinned Dolidze in against the fence, with Roman on one knee. Hernandez fired knees to the thigh, put his weight on Doldize, and got an arm around the neck briefly. Dolidze would escape, and even try to pull guard later in the round. Hernandez instead backed off, and landed a crisp right hand moments later. Then came another takedown by Hernandez, who got on top, landed an elbow, and put turned the heat up. Heading into round four, he was easily up 30-27.

In a round where Dolidze needed to start thinking about a finish, he instead found Hernandez draped all over him once more. Dolidze would try, in vain, to grab a leg. Instead, Hernandez softened his opponent up more with punches. And then let Dolidze up again, which was becoming downright cruel. On the next takedown attempt, Dolidze grabbed the fence, something he’d done earlier in the fight, leading ref Dean to say he was taking a point. It wouldn’t matter. Hernandez would land a knee, then grab the neck from behind, choking Dolidze and forcing the tap while still stepping backwards, in motion.

Official Result: Anthony Hernandez def. Roman Dolidze by submission (rear-naked choke), Round 4, 2:45

Featherweight action at UFC Vegas 109 on Saturday saw veteran Andre Fili paired up with Christian Rodriguez.

“Touchy” Fili had been trading wins and losses back to 2022 and was coming off a loss to Melquizael Costa; “Cee-Rod” had, in something of an unlikely coincidence, also lost to Costa in his last outing.

The first round saw both fighters exchange low leg kicks, as Rodriguez pressed Fili to the fence looking to land a massive overhand. The fighters entered the clinch as Rodriguez controlled Fili against the cage momentarily. As each returned to the center of the cage, Fili seemed hesitant to throw. Rodriguez landed a good low leg kick and followed it up with a fast jab upstairs. Fili threw a powerful left hook that didn’t find a home, as Rodriguez landed a kick to the legs.

Shortly after, Fili caught Rodriguez clean with the same counter left hook he missed moments earlier, rocking Rodriguez and forcing him to retreat. Rodriguez weathered the storm, and seemed to be recovered with a minute left in the round. Fili was darting in and out of range landing jabs and leg kicks, climbing back into the fight in terms of significant strikes. In a hope to change the momentum in the fight, Rodriguez landed a takedown against the fence with twenty seconds left.

A back and forth first round could have gone either way as this entertaining contest entered the second. Rodriguez threw back to back left hands that narrowly missed, as Fili partially connected with a head kick upstairs. Moments later Rodriguez was able grab a leg, but Fili defended well against the takedown.

Both fighters started to throw caution to the wind and exchange on the massive blows on the inside. Rodriguez forced the fight into the clinch, but Fili was able to separate and land a clean left hand counter. Fili seemed to be pulling away in the second round finding a home for his jab. A quality knee landed from Rodriguez in the clinch with five seconds left. Another close round saw Fili narrowly ahead on total strikes.

In the third, Rodriguez threw a jab and entered into the clinch. Forcing the fight to the fence Rodriguez looked for a takedown, landing knees to the leg of Fili. After separating Rodriguez landed a head kick but was drug to the ground by Fili giving up a massive takedown. Moving to he back of Rodriguez, Fili was quickly transitioning to a dominant position. Rodriguez was able to escape moments later, as both exchanged big shots in the center of the cage. After eating a big elbow, Fili landed another takedown presumably securing a victory. With a minute left in the fight Rodriguez scrambled up, eating a body kick on his way up. Each fighter stood and traded big shots as the final horn sounded. Fili should have earned himself a massive victory as a betting underdog.

After three rounds, the judges were split again. This time favoring Andre Fili. No clue how this fight could have been scored for Rodriguez, but at least the right fighter won the contest. Fili and Daniel Cormier stated they were surprised with the split decision but Fili gave credit to his opponent Christian Rodriguez, and humbly gave credit to his teammates and coaches as well.

Official Result: Andre Fili def. Christian Rodriguez by split decision (30–27, 29–28, 28–29)

Bantamweights Miles Johns and Jean Matsumoto faced off as part of Saturday’s UFC Vegas 109 main card, with the promotion back at the UFC Apex for the second week running.

Both men were looking to bounce back from single losses that snapped win streaks, though in the case of Matsumoto, it was a 16-fight win streak to start his pro career that had been halted by Rob Font last time out.

The opening minutes of the fight saw Johns press forward landing quality punches on the inside. After connecting with a flush right hand Johns shot in on a well timed takedown that forced the fight to the floor. After a few minutes Matsumoto was able to return to his feet where he ate a clean left hook on a counter from Johns. Matsumoto landed a good kick to the body and attempted a flying knee that allowed Johns to press the fight to the cage. Johns landed a good body shot against the fence, and defended against a takedown by Matsumoto. After the first five minutes, Johns had jumped ahead to an early lead.

In the second round, Johns pressed forward landing a good double jab on Matsumoto. After a few moments, Matsumoto started to put the pressure on Johns landing a good kick to the body. The explosive style of Matsumoto was on display midway through the second, with the Brazilian prospect landing multiple dynamic kicks on Johns. Coming forward with a knee, Matsumoto left an opening for Johns to grab his leg and drag him down. Johns seemed to be tiring and could not keep Matsumoto on the ground. Both fighters exchanged massive hooks on the inside, as Johns was ahead on strikes 52-39 with a minute left in the round. Matsumoto continued to march forward looking to even the fight at a round a piece. Johns won the first round, but this second frame was far more competitive and could have been scored for Jean Matsumoto.

A big low kick from Matsumoto floored Johns momentarily in the first moments of the round. Fighting back well, Johns landed a good shot to the body and seemed to be walking well on the leg. Johns started to find a second wind in the fight, coming forward looking to land a big overhand shot. Matsumoto countered with a flush uppercut that rocked back the head of Johns.

After a multitude of calf kicks Johns leg was starting to swell, but he continued to be the aggressor, taking the fight down again with a minute remaining. His third takedown of the fight may have been his biggest yet, as he held control until the final fifteen seconds. Matsumoto shot in on a takedown attempt of his own that was stuffed by Johns. This was a very close and competitive contest that could have gone in either direction.

Following 15 minutes of action, the judges were split. The first going with Johns, the second with Matsumoto. The final judge, Sal D’amato, scored the fight for Jean Matsumoto who earned his third victory in the UFC. In his post-fight interview, Matsumoto called out former opponent Rob Font for a rematch in Brazil later this year.

Official Result: Jean Matsumoto def. Miles Johns by split decision (29–28, 28–29, 29–28)

Middleweights Eryk Anders and Christian Leroy Duncan kicked off the main card of UFC Vegas 109 on Saturday.

A former LFA champ versus an ex-Cage Warriors champ, Anders vs. CLD was halted almost as soon as it got going after Duncan poked Anders in the eye. That led to a hard warning from the ref, but luckily the action was able to continue. When it did, Anders worked his way in, but Duncan came off the fence, on the attack. He mixed in some kicks, low and to the body – well, a bit south of the legal area of the body. And that led to the second stoppage of the round, which was barely 90 seconds in. Again, it was Anders needing time to recover, though he would take all of 45 seconds.

Back underway, Duncan appeared to at least graze Anders off a flying knee; that gave way to a takedown by Anders then a clinch along the fence. CLD fired several heavy knees from that clinch position, before the pair separated. Duncan then landed a leg kick, then a spinning elbow upstairs that rocked Anders! Anders stumbled backwards, slumping back against the fence. He’d eat a couple more punches, and by then ref had seen enough, moving in to wave it off.

Official Result: Christian Leroy Duncan def. Eryk Anders by TKO, Round 1, 3:53

Japan’s Toshiomi Kazama faced off against Elijah Smith in bantamweight action at UFC Vegas 109.

Smith, the son of UFC veteran Gilbert Smith (an Ultimate Fighter alum who had also competed for Bellator MMA and LFA), was looking for his second straight win in the promotion.

Kazama went right out and clinched up with Smith, however after getting some semblance of back control, he fell off and wound up on his back. On top, Smith was drilling Kazama with punches, but Toshiomi wound up latching on to a leg, and soon had a toe hold in place. Smith defensed, survived, and got out of danger. Once again in control, Smith battered Kazama with more punches.

Smith would spend a solid couple of minutes on top, with Kazama hunting for submissions off his back. Elijah Smith was able to land a decent amount of damage, but it all came crashing to an halt for Kazama moments later. Kazama went for a triangle, and Smith hoisted him up, slamming him down Rampage Jackson style! Kazama was done at that point, but the ref wasn’t in quick enough, and Smith added a blow that sent his opponent from dazed and confused to unconscious.

Kazama did regain consciousness in the cage, and his next stop will be the hospital to get checked over. “From start to finish, I knew I had the ability to keep up with the guy on the ground,” Smith said following the fight, after paying his respects to Kazama.

It was Panama versus Brazil when Joselyne Edwards took on Priscila Cachoeira on the UFC Vegas 109 prelims on Saturday.

The bantamweight fight found Cachoeira coming in off a win over Josiane Nunes, while Edwards had won two straight, both via finish.

Edwards went right into a takedown off of Cachoeira’s opening calf kick, but couldn’t land the attempt. When that failed, Edwards fired a right hand, and a calf kick of her own, but it was Cachoeira’s response that had more heat on it. Moments later, Edwards changed levels again, but again, there was no takedown to be had. An eye poke suffered by Edwards then halted the action. After getting back underway, the pair traded fire, Edwards landed a couple of good shots. Once again, it was Cachoeira with the power edge – but her hands were down, and Joselyne Edwards dropped her with a left and a harder right hand, a two-punch combination that sent Brazil’s Cachoeira crashing backwards. Edwards charged in, got on top of her fallen foe and landed one more punch before the ref stepped in. That gave Edwards an impressively big win, her third straight.

Out of action for over a year, Julija Stoliarenko returned at UFC Vegas 109, taking on Brazil’s Gabriella Fernandes.

Stoliarenko had undergone elbow surgery, and opened her own gym, during her time away. Fernandes had won two straight, including a victory over Wang Cong.

There was plenty of feeling out and circling early, with Stoliarenko holding center and Fernandes circling on the outside, looking to counter. Stoliarenko would look to cut off the cage and had to be warry of high kicks, while attacking with low kicks and her own right hand. With about two minutes left, Fernandes popped off a two-punch combo that connected. A moment later, Stoliarenko closed the distance, looking to tie things up against the cage – but she could not keep the action there, Fernandes quickly breaking free. Gabriella would land to the body, and fired another kick there moments later. The body work was the Brazilian’s best weapon through the opening five minutes.

Stoliarenko changed levels and shot for a single-leg takedown early in round two. Fernandes, however, would defend and push her off. Another high kick from Fernandes followed. Stolianrenko, meanwhile, had a trail of blood leaking down one side of her face. More hard kicks to the body would land for Fernandes, while the bloodied Stoliarenko would shoot for another takedown attempt. Again, Fernandes was able to fight it off. On the feet, even when she was landing, Stoliarenko didn’t have much behind her shots and was being outgunned, or just overpowered.

Julija Stoliarenko, almost certainly down two rounds, put the pressure on early in round three. A takedown attempt was bailed on early, Stoliarenko pulling back when it was clear she was too far out. Fernandes landed a counter. Stolianrenko was also landing, but was out of range and not connecting clean. Just past two minutes in, Stoliarenko was able to close the distance off a Fernandes kick, tying things up. While she landed a few punches to the bread basket, Stolianrenko could not get the fight down. They’d finish out the round with no question as to the winner.

Official Result: Gabriella Fernandes def. Julija Stoliarenko by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
