Tatsuro Taira picked up a key win over a former title challenger in Alex Perez, though it came due to injury off a rarely-seen body triangle takedown. Miles Johns found success in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 93- here’s what could be next for those two, and some of the night’s other big winners.

Tatsuro Taira

By beating former title challenger Alex Perez, Taira propels himself into the top echelon at 126-lbs at only twenty-four years old. With a six fight winning streak, he is perhaps just one more win away from a title shot.

Several other fighters are in that position. Muhammad Mokaev is already booked against Manel Kape. Amir Albazi is the other top ranked contender on a winning streak. Taira should be ready by the time Albazi is back from his injury, so this matchup between grapplers with well-round skillsets makes sense for a title eliminator.

Taira’s Next Fight: Amir Albazi

Miles Johns

Beating Douglas Silva de Andrade at UFC Vegas 93 improved Johns’ record to 6-2 (1NC) in the UFC. Now having won three of his last four, he is in position for what I like to call a “rankings eliminator,” a fight that is like a title eliminator, but for a chance to get into the rankings, not a title shot.

Aiemann Zahabi is in a similar position to Miles, having not lost in his last four bouts. Both are well-rounded fighters who may go somewhat under the radar in a deep division like bantamweight. The winner would be deserving of a fight against a ranked opponent, and would be already, in fact, if not for the aforementioned depth of the division.

Johns’ Next Fight: Aiemann Zahabi

Lucas Almeida

Lucas Almeida put on one of his career-best showings in his first ever decision victory, which came over prospect Timothy Cuamba at UFC Vegas 93. He now moves to 2-2 in the UFC and has any number of matchups available to him in a wide open featherweight division. Jamall Emmers is one good option, a fighter who lost his last fight but has almost twice as many UFC fights as Almeida. The primary appeal of Emmers, is that he is a fellow striker would would bring a fun fight out of Almeida.

Almeida’s Next Fight: Jamall Emmers

Brady Heistand

After losing on the finale of his season of The Ultimate Fighter, Brady Heistand has had a much more successful career than the season’s champion, Ricky Turcios, by winning all three of his fights since. The bantamweight fight is, again, the deepest in the UFC, so options abound.

One interesting one is a fighter similar to Brady, a wrestler/grappler with a scrappy striking style: Sergey Morozov. Morozov is on a two-fight winning streak but has not fought since 2022. If he is ready to return to the octagon, he would be a perfect opponent for Heistand.

Heistand’s Next Fight: Sergey Morozov

Asu Almabayev

The Kazakh flyweight continued his rapid ascent by winning his sixteenth straight fight, and his third in the UFC. He is on a path to the rankings soon no matter what, and the timing makes sense now. Both fourteenth and fifteenth-ranked flyweights Cody Durden and David Dvorak are coming off of losses, so they should be giving a chance to a fighter outside of the rankings next.

Durden at #15 is a strong wrestler in his own right, and would be the toughest challenge for Almabayev in years. If Asu can pass that test, he will truly be a prospect in contention.

Almabayev’s Next Fight: Cody Durden

Adam Fugitt

His split decision win over Josh Quinlan on Saturday moved Adam Fugitt to .500 in the UFC at 2-2, which puts him at a turning point in his career. With a win or loss his trajectory will swing wildly.

Charles Radtke lost for the first time in the UFC only one week before Fugitt, moving to 2-1 in the UFC welterweight division. The two have similar skillsets and will be on similar trajectories for their next appearance, so the matchup makes sense, as much as any.

Fugitt’s Next Fight: Charles Radtke

UFC Vegas 93 featured 11 fights with six of them on the main card. In the flyweight main event, Tatsuro Taira stayed undefeated against the 12-fight UFC veteran in Alex Perez thanks in part to a graphic knee injury.

Alex Perez

Alex Perez lost on Saturday when he suffered a knee injury in a takedown from his opponent, Tatsuro Taira. It’s a tough loss to stomach for 32-year-old Perez and picking up an injury in the process is catastrophic, hopefully he has a smooth recovery.

Perez has lost three of his last four fights since November of 2020. But his late notice finish of Matheus Nicolau back in April was enough to propel him to a #5 ranking in the UFC’s flyweight division. And his opponent, Taira entered the fight ranked at #13.

Alex Perez was originally going to fight #12 ranked, Tagir Ulanbekov before rebooking. Ulanbekov would ultimately not fight after missing weight against his new opponent, Joshua Van. Tagir would be a great matchup but depending on the severity of his injury, the division might move on without him.

A move to 135lbs. where he has fought previously, and a fight against former champion Cody Garbrandt could be a great move for Alex as well. Alex has missed weight in the past, though it doesn’t seem to be a problem now. Grabrandt has struggled recently losing three of his last 5 fights. ‘No Love’ has experimented at 125lbs. himself with his 2021 loss against Kai Kara-France. Grabrandt experienced an injury in his last fight as well against Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 300, so perhaps Cody and Alex’s are on the same trajectory here.

Alex’s next fight: Tagir Ulanbekov or Cody Garbrandt

Douglas Silva de Andrade

Douglas Silva de Andrade lost a unanimous decision to Miles Johns in the co main event of UFC Vegas 93. Now 38, D. Silva’s 7-6 UFC record doesn’t do him nearly enough justice. Douglas Silva entered the UFC at 22-0 and has been a something of a high-level gate keeper for years. (Losing to only Zubaira Tukhugov, Rob Font and Petr Yan pre-2020.)

D. Silva has gone 3-3 in his last six fights since the beginning of 2021. It is worth noting that D Silva has only lost to solid competition including Lerone Murphy, Said Nurmagomedov, and now Miles Johns, in the time period.

Who better to fight than the Payton Talbott vs. Yanis Ghemmouri fight winner? Talbott has burst on the scene after his win on last year’s season of the Contender Series. Since then, Talbott has stopped Nick Aguirre and most recently, top prospect, Cameron Saaiman earlier this year. Yanis is 3-1 and lost his UFC debut to William Gomis in his last fight. What better way to fast-track ’em? The pair fight on June 29.

D. Silva’s next fight: Yanis Ghemmouri vs. Payton Talbott winner

Timmy Cuamba

Timmy Cuamba was defeated by unanimous decision at the hands of Lucas Almedia at UFC Vegas 93. Now 0-2 with the promotion, Timmy will likely be in a tough position in his next time out. Though it does help that Cuamba’s first loss with the UFC was a very close split decision against Bolaji Oki in February.

Timmy should fight Herbert Burns. ‘The Blaze’ is on a three-fight losing streak and has been stopped in each loss. His last time out was back in March when he was stopped in the second round by Julio Arce. Burns needs a win, bad, as though he is 2-3 with the UFC, he hasn’t seen the win column since 2020.

Timmy’s next fight: Herbert Burns

Garrett Armfield

Brady Hiestand submitted Garrett Armfield in a wild back and forth fight on Saturday. The loss snapped Armfield’s two-fight win streak consisting of a first-round finish over Toshiomi Kazama and a unanimous decision victory over Brad Katona in January.

Armfield is now 2-2 in the UFC and still just 27 years old. Armfield put on a competitive fight and that should be reflected in his next matchup. He should fight the winner of Kyung Ho Kang vs. Muin Gafurov who fight on June 22nd. Muin is 0-2 in the UFC but his losses are to John Castaneda and most recently Said Nurmagomedov, in September of last year. Muin is also a 6-fight veteran of the ONE FC promotion where he took former UFC standout, Jon Lineker. Kyung Ho Kang is 8-4 in the UFC with his most recent wins over Batgerel Danaa and Cristian Quinoez.

Garrett’s next fight: Kyung Ho Kang vs. Muin Gafurov winner

Jose Johnson

Jose Johnson lost a one-sided unanimous decision against hot prospect, Asu Almabayev on Saturday. It was Johnson’s first go at flyweight professionally and at 6’0″ tall, he performed well at the weight, against a tough guy.

Johnson is now 1-2 with the UFC. And with Jose looking like he is comfortable at flyweight; his next fight should be against Lucas Rocha. Lucas is a 2023 Contender Series product that, after a little trouble on the scale, finished his opponent, Davi Bittencourt, in the second round to earn a UFC contract. Johnson and Rocha were scheduled to fight in April before Jose withdrew. Rocha never ended up fighting and is still looking to make his UFC debut. Great one to rebook.

Jose’s next fight: Lucas Rocha

Josh Quinlan

Josh Quinlan lost a close split decision to Adam Fugitt to kick off the UFC Vegas 93 main card. Quinlan has now lost three fights in a row. His only win with the promotion was a 2022 first round finish against Jason Witt.

Quinlan was scheduled to fight Ange Loosa in 2023 before Loosa withdrew. Loosa is fighting Gabriel Bonfim on July 13. But both of those fighters now have two wins with the promotion and Josh is 1-3.

Quinlan should fight Rhys McKee. Rhys was last in action back in March when he lost a split decision to Chidi Njokuani. Before that he lost a unanimous decision to Ange Loosa. McKee is 0-4 in the UFC, and it’d be a good fight to decide who stays on the roster.

Josh’s next fight: Rhys McKee

Tatsuro Taira came away from UFC Vegas 93, where he competed in his first five-round main event with the promotion, with a win- and a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus.

That latter fact might come as a surprise to some, given the nature of the finish against Alex Perez.

In the second round, Taira scaled the back of Perez, climbing him like King Kong on the Empire State Building. Then, with a body triangle in place, Taira leaned back, toppling the former title challenger (and himself) onto the canvas.

Almost immediately, Perez clutched his knee in pain. While the rarely seen body triangle takedown was both intentional and impressive, the finish came down to a bit of bad luck on the part of Perez. And to that point, Perez had actually been winning the fight, with all three judges scoring the first round 10-9 for the former title challenger.

Despite that, UFC commentator Michael Bisping heaped hyperbolic praise on the Japanese star post-fight. “That was one of the best and cleanest performances I’ve ever seen,” Bisping exclaimed in the night’s final post-fight interview.

Regardless of how it went down, Taira comes away from his first main event with a TKO win, and the asterisk beside it, “injury,” will eventually be long forgotten. Especially given that the slick takedown resulted in said injury. Still, on a night low on finishes, perhaps the UFC simply wanted to further the push of their biggest Japanese star, who improved to 16-0 with the win, and called for a title shot against Alexandre Pantoja.

The other Performance of the Night bonus at UFC Vegas 93 went to Brady Hiestand, who submitted Garrett Armfield in the third round of a back-and-forth battle. Hiestand was rocked and nearly stopped earlier in the bout, making the finish that much more impressive.

Fight of the Night on Saturday went to Gabriella Fernandes and the debuting Carli Judice, with Fernandes coming away with a split decision win. All four bonus-winners pocket an additional $50,000 on top of their purse, outfitting pay, etc.

Alex Perez and Tatsuro Taira capped off the night at UFC Vegas 93, a Fight Night card that felt very much overshadowed by a rocky week for the promotion, with Conor McGregor and Khamzat Chimaev both pulling out of key upcoming bouts.

Taira, however, was an undefeated 15-0, and the first title contender out of Japan arguably since Kyoji Horiguchi. He was getting step up against Perez, who faced Deveison Figueiredo in an unsuccessful title bid in 2020.

Early in Saturday’s main event, it was Perez putting the Japanese youngster on the fence, though he struggled to keep him there. Instead, Taira turned things around and fired a knee off the break. Undeterred, Perez moved in, ripped a few shots to the body and tried to clinch up again, to no avail. What was working for Perez, however, was making the fight a brawl, as he threw wide, looping hooks and nasty uppercuts throughout the round, forcing Taira out of his comfort zone and negating his biggest strength, his grappling. Towards the end of the frame, Perez mixed in some low kicks, and landed a straight right. With exactly one minute on the clock, Perez suffered an eye poke, which halted the action.

With the action back underway, Perez got the action down, but he couldn’t keep it there, with Taira immediately back to his feet.

Less than a minute into the second round, that scene repeated itself. Ref Herb Dean gave Taira a warning this time around; Perez came out firing off the restart, and continued to mix in his calf kicks. Taira would fire back with his jab and some low kicks of his own, but he was less active, and in need of a momentum shift – which he got by changing levels and driving into a takedown. Taira wound up climbing the back instead, with Perez carrying his opponent’s full weight well off the cage. Taira had a body triangle on, and wasn’t going anywhere. They dropped to the ground a moment later, after Taira leaned back, shifting his weight- and Alex Perez appeared to injure his knee in the process, immediately tapping and ending the fight.

After the win, Taira called for a title fight with flyweight champ Alexandre Pantoja.

Official Result: Tatsuro Taira def. Alex Perez by TKO (injury), Round 2, 2:59

Brazilian UFC veteran Douglas Silva de Andrade took on Miles Johns in UFC Vegas 93’s co-main event.

At age 38, ‘DSDA’ is the oldest fighter on the card but came in to this fight having still won three of his last four in a twelve-fight UFC career. Meanwhile Miles Johns had gotten off to a 5-2 (1NC) start to his UFC career. In a stacked bantamweight division a fight between any two above average unranked fighters can be excellent. This fight certainly entertained, as Miles Johns defeated the veteran to earn his second win in a row.

The fight started patiently on both sides, with one shot at a time at most coming from the fighters. Both men landed some clean single punches on the lead and counter and the fight seemed even. Then, D Silva got to his usual big swinging combinations, landing some but also getting countered as well. Neither men separated before the end of the round.

Miles Johns started round two, landing the right hand with success and winning with composure, but could not land any of his takedown attempts. ‘D Silva’ fought back but was inaccurate and Johns seemed to land more in a striking-based round. He capped the round off by rocking de Andrade in the final minute.

Johns drew first blood in the final round but Andrade fired back and defended Johns’ takedown. The rest of the round was competitive once again but Miles’ jab and composure put him in good position to win against the wild attacks of Douglas Silva de Andrade. DSDA was not out of there though. He knocked Johns’ mouthpiece out at one point and stayed aggressive in the third round, hurting Miles Johns and perhaps stealing the round. Johns fired back, despite being wobbled, and won back respect in the final thirty seconds. When the clock reached ten seconds the pair swung it out until the final buzzer.

When the scorecards were read out, Miles Johns got the win as expected, winning on all three scorecards. In his post-fight speech an excited Johns declared, “You will have to kill me to get me out of this octagon,” before calling out Ricky Simon.

Prospect Timothy Cuamba and veteran Brazilian brawler Lucas Almeida squared off in the UFC featherweight division on Saturday at UFC Vegas 93.

Cuamba lost his UFC debut to fellow prospect Bokaji Oki, but at age 25 has a lot of room to grow. His opponent, Lucas Almeida, lost his last two fights to Andre Fili and Pat Sabatini coming into this one but remained dangerous, having won every other fight of his career, except one, by finish. It turned out that this fight would be the first decision win of Almeida’s career, but it was no less impressive for that.

Almeida came forward to start the bout but Cuamba landed the first big punch, a clean counter right hand to Lucas’ stationary chin. However, Almeida came back a minute later with a perfect overhand right that dropped Timothy. It looked like Cuamba was done but he fought his way back to his feet and shot a takedown. He didn’t land it but clinched up to recover. Lucas broke free though and scored another knockdown, a flash knockdown this time. Cuamba clinched but was then forced to strike again. Almeida stalked his prey but his prey bit back. They exchanged in the pocket wildly, and it was Cuamba who loosened the mouthguard of Almeida. That backed Lucas off until the round ended.

The second round saw Cuamba begin to win back momentum early on the feet but then get rocked by a left hook and forced to panic-wrestle. The round after that was fairly even until Almeida hurt Tim again in the final minute, landing multiple clean punches to the head and a good hook to the body. Cuamba retreated to survive until the bell.

Cuamba shot a takedown and got his foe halfway down in the start of the final round, but Almeida refused to accept bottom position and got back up. Both men had success on the feet in the middle portion of the third round but Lucas Almeida was always on the front foot, until, that is, he got taken down with one minute left. From full guard Cuamba got aggressive and landed big ground and pound, relentlessly trying to finish the fight until the bell, showing impressive heart in the process.

When the scorecards were turned in, Lucas Almeida won unsurprisingly, based on the damage he did in the first two rounds, with the UFC commentators calling it a “career-best.”

In his post-fight speech Almeida (through a translator) gave credit to Cuamba’s toughness and explained how hard he worked for a finish, but is satisfied with “God’s plan.”

TUF 29 finalist Brady Hiestand faced off with Garrett Armfield in bantamweight action at Saturday’s UFC Vegas 93.

Both fighters entered off two fight win streaks, but Hiestand had been out of action for roughly a year. Perhaps trying to make up for lost time, he started hot; Armfield did as well, and inside of a minute, Hiestand had dove in on a single-leg attempt. Armfield snatched an arm, however, locking up a nasty-looking arm-bar attempt, forcing Hiestand to step over his opponent’s body to defend. That he did, and a minute later Hiestand transitioned to a guillotine attempt.

Armfield would survive that, and get on top, in what had been through half a round a very active, competitive fight. When they got back up, Hiestand quickly took the fight down again off a single-leg. Back up, back down, ever so briefly, then Hiestand took the back standing. With the body lock in place, he dragged Armfield down, and got the arm under the chin. Somehow, Garrett Armfield survived the rear-naked choke, however improbably making it to the end of the round.

Round two started with Armfield connecting with a check hook that put Hiestand on his backside! Hiestand got back up, only to be rocked again, going down with Armfield getting on top. Hiestand threw up a triangle, with Armfield in side mount. He would escape the submission attempt, and get back to his feet, dropping left hands as Hiestand remained on his back.

Hiestand, though hurt, wasn’t out. Instead, he’d wind up taking Armfield’s back, locking up a body triangle. With two minutes still on the clock, he had lots of time to work over Armfield and hunt the rear-naked choke. Armfield broke the body lock and tried to turn out of the choke, eventually getting up with Hiestand clinging to him before he dropped off, and they moved back to center. Through two rounds, the fight remained a very active, competitive affair filled with slick grappling exchanges, peppered with bursts of stand-up action.

Thirty seconds into round three, and Hiestand clinched up, taking Armfield to the fence, dropping down and pulling his legs out from under him. Armfield gave up his back moving to his feet, but Hiestand couldn’t capitalize, though he hung on and soon slammed Armfield back down. This time, when Armfield got up, Hiestand climbed the back, got the body lock, and dragged Armfield down. This time, under the neck, there was no mistake, and Brady Hiestand forced the tap!

Official Result: Brady Hiestand def. Garrett Armfield by submission (rear-naked choke), Round 3, 1:52

Top prospect Asu Almabayev added to his undefeated streak against divisional newcomer Jose Johnson at UFC Vegas 93.

Hailing from Kazakhstan, Almabayev went undefeated in thirteen fights before joining the UFC, where he went 2-0 with two submissions before meeting Johnson. Jose was moving down from bantamweight to flyweight, a division he has never fought in and one that people were skeptical he could make. However, at 6’0″ he made the limit at 126 lbs, and so the fight was on.

As the much smaller man, Almabayev retreated and circled to start the fight. Johnson remained patient because of the wrestling threat but felt his way forward behind kicks. When he threw a teep to the midsection ninety seconds into the round, Assu grabbed the leg, pulled forward into a body-lock, and twisted Jose to the ground. Almabayev landed in half-guard but Johnson regained full. Almabayev landed nothing big, but consistent damage with short shots put him ahead. Johnson scrambled to his feet but Almabayev dashed to the back body-lock and then took the back. He almost took the neck, too, but Jose just barely slipped out of the rear-naked choke, surviving to the end of the round.

Almabayev opened round two with a surprise spinning kick that landed on Johnson’s chin. He then shot but Johnson got on top in a high mount, which allowed Almabayev to wrestle up and end on top. Johnson was able to lock up a triangle at the end of the scramble, however, which forced Almabayev to defend for the next minute. When Asu did get out, he instantly got on the back of Johnson and instantly went on the attack. Johnson turned and forced Almabayev to go to mount, where Jose was able to regain butterfly and then full guard. He never escaped fully though, and got his back taken again in the final thirty seconds of the round, where Almabayev attacked with damage and a choke attempt.

Johnson’s cardio level bore watching coming into the final round given his history at higher weight classes. Almabayev opened with a spinning kick to the body and a shot, which was partly successful. Johnson got up but Almabayev got on the rear body-lock. However Johnson was able to turn the tables by pushing Almabayev over and getting mount, then the back take. He attacked the submission he needed to win the fight but Asu scrambled and turned until he ended up back on top. The Kazakh wrestled dominantly and landed ground strikes consistently, only working his way to the back with one minute left in the round. Johnson fought the hands diligently, however, and protected his neck right to the horn, despite several close calls with the choke attempts of Almabayev.

The decision obviously went as expected, with Asu Almabayev winning all three rounds on all three scorecards. ‘Zulfikar’ declared himself one of the top five best flyweights in the world and called out Kai Kara-France in a bold statement.

Welterweights Josh Quinlan and Adam Fugitt kicked off the UFC Vegas 93 main card on Saturday at the APEX in Las Vegas.

Quinlan was in search second win in the company, and had dropped two straight, making Saturday key if he was to continue on with the promotion. Fugitt was also 1-2 in the UFC and entered off of a loss to Mike Malott at UFC 289 last year.

The fight started with both men measuring each other out, Fugitt throwing his rear kick to the body of his opponent. Quinlan landed a superman punch about a minute into the fight as Fugitt continued to look for the kicks with various levels of success. Midway thru the round and both fighters were still looking somewhat measured throwing only a few strikes at a time. Adam was throwing out a lot of volume, and every time that Fugitt was throwing it was getting his opponent’s attention. With seconds left in the round, both fighters began to open up, throwing and landing more strikes.

To start the second round Quinlan landed a leg kick with Fugitt returning multiple kicks at every level in response. Nearly minute into the round and Adam looked for a body lock that Josh quickly shrugged off. Quinlan finally started to land some of his strikes in space, landing single punches upstairs and a couple of kicks to the body and legs. Quinlan was also able to skillfully evade some of Fugitt’s high kicks and fended off a double leg takedown via sprawl. Once again, Adam was throwing more volume and landing more, but every time that Quinlan landed, it was getting his opponent’s attention.

Fugitt got back to work with the volume, mixing in some punches with his kicks, to start the final round. Quinlan picked up his activity and ferocity but continued to throw single strikes darting out of the range of his opponent just as quickly as he entered. At the halfway point of the round, Fugitt had landed numerous kicks to the arms and body of Quinlan but his opponent was still running in and looking to land that power punch. In the closing seconds of the fight Quinlan was able to connect with a few solid punches in response to all of the kicks thrown in his direction by Fugitt.

A close fight resulted in close scorecards, with two judges scoring the bout for Adam Fugitt, and the dissenting judge awarding an identical 29-28 score to Quinlan.

Jimmy Flick vs. Nate Maness was one of several promising flyweight fights on the UFC Vegas 93 card on Saturday, which was headlined by another 125lb affair featuring Alex Perez and Tatsuro Taira.

Flick and Maness were both coming off single wins and looking to put together the start of a win streak.

Maness started the fight by establishing the jab right away, while Jimmy looked to use head movement and cover up. Flick threw kicks at multiple targets, body and head, with success to the body. With nearly three minutes left in the round, Flick went for a single leg takedown, but Maness was able to clamp down on the guillotine while pinned against the fence. Flick released the single leg and the two returned to exchanging in the center of the octagon. Maness was looking very composed still throwing the jab and landing to the body and head.

With one minute left in the round Flick, threw combinations and attempted to enter on the single leg once again. After a little resistance, Flick took Maness to the ground where his opponent elected to hang on to the guillotine. Flick looked for the von flue choke in the final seconds of the round but was unsuccessful.

To open the second round, Maness uncorked a couple of combinations looking for the body of a retreating and circling, Flick. But Jimmy was able to come forward with some solid punches to the midsection and leg kicks, all while still moving his head to evade some of the incoming jabs. Nearly halfway thru the round and Maness still looked in control, poking his opponent with single punches and successfully keeping him away from a shot and locking in a D’arce momentarily. Jimmy escaped and continued the scramble, looking for a body lock takedown against the fence. Jimmy didn’t get the takedown and ended up back against the fence and dropped for a guillotine. Maness was able to pop his head out of the guillotine and rain down some punishing shots on Flick in the closing seconds of the round.

Maness came out again flicking the jab finding the head of Flick a little earlier to start the third.

Flick was stalking Maness with his guard high, waving on his opponent, and trying to strike into the clinch. Midway through the round, Flick attempted yet another single leg takedown off of a nice overhand. Maness was able to defend the takedown once again and turn Flick around against the cage. Nate had Flick up against the cage and was landing some nasty short punches and knees.
