“The Killa Gorilla” Jared Cannonier will look to cement himself in the UFC middleweight title picture once again on June 17, where he’ll be met by fellow top-contender Marvin Vettori at the Apex.

The two combatants will square off in a five round fight night main event match-up, as Cannonier aims to take out another one of Xtreme Couture’s top fighters following his recent split-decision victory over Sean Strickland.

“Can’t be disappointed in a win. I’m always looking to get the finish, but after watching the fight I realized that my opponent used a little bit more caution (than expected) and I didn’t make as many of the adjustments that I needed to make to get the finish I wanted,” Cannonier told Cageside Press. “Lessons learned – I’m glad I learned that lesson in a victory as opposed to losing. I’m still happy with the performance.”

Originally born in Dallas, Texas, Cannonier began his professional fighting career in Alaska, where he would amass an undefeated (7-0) record and secure the Alaska Fighting Championship heavyweight title before making the move to the UFC. After a moderate (3-4) start to his UFC tenure, Cannonier chose to move down to middleweight – a decision that has proven wise in recent years.

Since the drop in weight, he has won six of eight fights, including four finishes and three “Performance of the Night” bonuses. Cannonier’s two defeats came at the hands of former champion Robert Whittaker and current middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, when he challenged for UFC gold at International Fight Week last July.

The MMA Lab product now finds himself matched up with “The Italian Stallion” Marvin Vettori, a younger fighter that has achieved great success in the middleweight division, having only lost to Whittaker and Adesanya in the last six years – very similarly to Cannonier.

“He’s very durable, resilient, ever-present – he’s always going to bring the fight,” Cannonier said. “I hope he throws caution to the wind and comes out guns blazing. I’m going to do my best to weather that storm and reciprocate.”

Jared Cannonier has multiple victories in three different weight classes, five UFC performance bonuses, and a professional heavyweight championship belt hanging in his trophy case. While “The Killa Gorilla” has a lot left in the tank as he has shown time and time again, the 39 year-old fighter reflects on his career and the legacy he intends to leave behind.

“I was always an organic fighter. I don’t put on no shows, I don’t wear no costumes, put on any masks or makeup or any of that to prance around and act like something that I’m not,” Cannonier said. “What you see is what you get, and if you don’t like it kiss my ass.”

Cannonier can earn one last championship opportunity with a statement victory over Vettori, though he’d likely need a sensational knockout in order to skip some of the other middleweight contenders in line.

Whether or not he secures another title shot before it’s all said and done, Cannonier stayed true to himself throughout his mixed-martial arts journey and is proud of how his career has unfolded thus far.

Say goodbye to the UFC Apex for a while, folks. Back at the facility for UFC Vegas 70, the Fight Night card will be the last at the venue for at least a month and a half. Headlined by two light heavyweight contenders, the spotlight this Saturday is on the newcomers and we’ve got a total of seven on this card. One, Carl Deaton, is coming in on short notice fighting Joe Solecki. Solecki was supposed to fight last week but his fight was called off and rescheduled for this Saturday’s card.

Carl “Anishinaabe” Deaton lll
Standing at five-foot-six
Fighting at 155 lbs (lightweight)
33-years-old
Fighting out of Mount Pleasent, Michigan, US
Training out of American Top Team
A pro record of 17-5, 2 NC
3 KO/TKOs, 9 Submissions

How Deaton will fare in the UFC:

From the time to time, the UFC will sign these regional veterans giving them an opportunity. Fighters like Dequan Townsend, Charles Ontiveros, and Jason Witt come to mind. Deaton is 2-2 in his last four and is 33 years old. His best win is against Justin Jaynes, who went 1-4 in the UFC. I’m a prospect guy and I like to see the UFC sign guys that are the future of the sport. Deaton isn’t the past or present, nor is he the future.

Without getting into it too much Deaton isn’t great anywhere and is going to struggle to get wins in the UFC. He’s easily hit, has terrible takedown defense, and makes a ton of mistakes in the grappling department. Deaton does a fine job of always working, however. He moves well on the mat and has decent hands on his feet. He just doesn’t have the speed and necessary setups to be a threat.

Deaton is more of a submission grappler than anything. Nine of his wins have come by submission and they all came by some form of choke. His wrestling and ground control isn’t good enough to be competing in the UFC at any level. I’m not high on the signing and it’s crazy that the UFC couldn’t find a more decorated, accomplished fighter on the regional scene.

How Deaton and Solecki match up:

Deaton was brought into the UFC to keep the Solecki fight alive. It feels like he was brought in to lose, really. The clear path to victory for Solecki is to get the takedown and find the submission. There are concerns with Solecki but he’s levels above Deaton. Even on the feet, I favor Solecki more. I would be surprised if Deaton won this.

Opposites collide as Kevin Holland will meet fellow middleweight Kyle Daukaus at a UFC Fight Night event on October 2.

A source with knowledge of the match-up confirmed the booking to Cageside Press, speaking of condition of anonymity. The bout was first reported by MMA Fighting.

The location and venue for the UFC’s October 2 event is yet-to-be-announced.

Holland (21-7) started 2021 off slowly with back-to-back decision losses to Derek Brunson and Marvin Vettori in the span of three weeks. After going 5-2 in under a year’s time, “Trailblazer” is taking six months off between fights.

The proven striker is focusing on his wrestling and takedown defense, even working with Daniel Cormier at the American Kickboxing Academy [AKA] in California. Holland, who has 12 of his 21 wins coming by TKO/knockout, will face a jiu-jitsu black belt in October.

Daukaus (10-2) is coming off his second UFC loss, a unanimous decision defeat to Phil Hawes at UFC on ESPN 24 in May. A Dana White’s Contender Series alumnus, Daukaus picked up his first octagon victory by beating Dustin Stoltzfus via unanimous decision at UFC 255 last November.

That win came after dropping a decision to Bendan Allen in his UFC debut at UFC on ESPN 12 in June 2020, a fight he accepted on short notice. The 28-year-old brings an extensive ground game to the cage with eight of his 10 victories coming by submission.

With the addition of this middleweight bout, the UFC Fight Night card on Oct. 2 includes:

Thiago Santos vs. Johnny Walker

Grant Dawson vs. Diego Ferreira

Jared Gordon vs. Joe Solecki

Bethe Correia vs. Karol Rosa

Fernando Padilla vs. Sean Soriano

Douglas Silva de Andrade vs. Gaetano Pirrello

Kyle Daukaus vs. Kevin Holland
