UFC Paris had an undercard with a couple entertaining subs and a lot of decisions, but the main card featured some real leather throwing. The main event featured a huge lightweight showdown that saw Renato Moicano silencing the hometown crowd and beating up Benoit Saint-Denis on the ground. However in the co-main event, the French reigned supreme as Nassourdine Imavov likely sealed a middleweight title shot with his dominant win over Brendan Allen. Some ascending fighters at UFC Paris are guaranteed to get some big-time matchups in their next bouts.

Renato Moicano

Renato Moicano absolutely battered and brutalized his opponent, Benoit Saint-Denis, in the UFC Paris main event Saturday. Moicano eventually scored a doctor’s stoppage victory at the conclusion of the second round of the bout.

Renato entered the fight as the #11 ranked lightweight in the UFC while Benoit Saint Denis was ranked at #12. And Moicano is riding a lot of momentum right now as its not only that he’s on a four-fight win streak but how he’s winning these fights and how electric they are. And of course, Renato having fun on the mic afterwards. A golden formula.

Dan Hooker would be the ideal next matchup for Renato Moicano. Renato mentioned both Dan and Paddy Pimblett after his fight. But a fight with #5 ranked Dan Hooker makes the most sense for 35-year-old Moicano, who needs to make his move on the belt sooner rather than later.

Renato’s next fight: Dan Hooker

Nassourdine Imavov

Nassourdine Imavov turned in nearly as dominating of a performance as he could have dreamt of as he out grappled Brendan Allen on his way to a unanimous decision victory.

Imavov put his #4 ranking in the UFC’s middleweight division up for grabs as Allen entered the fight ranked at #8. Nassourdine is now on a four-fight unbeaten streak including names like Chris Curtis, Roman Dolidze, and Jared Cannonier. Imavov’s next fight should be for the belt with what is going on in the middleweight division. A fight with Dricus makes sense if that is what Imavov wants but a fight with #1 ranked UFC middleweight, Sean Strickland, is also available if Imavov so chooses (Strickland represents his last loss).

Nassourdine’s next fight: Dricus Du Plessis

Wiliam Gomis

William Gomis extended his winning streak to a perfect four in a row with his split decision victory over Joanderson Brito at UFC Paris. Questionable decision or not, a win is a win. And Gomis got the win.

That victory was massive for Gomis as he has faced three fight cancellations, including one due to weight cutting complications, in the lead up to this bout.

Gomis should fight Chepe Mariscal next. 4-0 vs. 4-0. Gomis has been finding a way to win so a fight with a guy like Chepe makes a lot of sense. Mariscal is scrappy and holds impressive wins over guys like Trevor Peek, Jack Jenkins, Morgan Carriere and most recently Damon Jackson.

William’s next fight: Chepe Mariscal

Bryan Battle

Bryan Battle walked through his French opposition, Kevin Jousset, at UFC Paris, dispatching him in two rounds with a hail of fists. The stoppage earned Battle a cool 50k. And it should earn him a good boost in the rankings as he 6-1 in the UFC with 1 NC against Ange Loosa in March (which was going his way till a second-round eye poke).

As usual, welterweight is crowded. But as a TUF winner, with mic skills and the capable stand up striking that he has, a solid opportunity should be on the horizon for Bryan.

Battle is about another two impressive wins from being ranked in the welterweight division. With that being said, Battle’s next fight should be against Khaos Williams. Williams has a similar record to Battle as he’s 6-2 in the UFC. His only losses in the UFC are two tough guys in Michel Pereira and Randy Brown. Plus, Khaos has scary power in his hands. This would be a great test for Battle to see if he’s ready for that next tier.

Bryan’s next fight: Khaos Williams

Morgan Charriere

Morgan Charriere put an abrupt stoppage to his fight with Gabriel Miranda with his fists on Saturday. It didn’t even take thirty seconds into the second round.

Win or lose, it doesn’t seem to matter as Charriere has looked great in the UFC thus far. Full stop. He’s looked like an incredibly exciting, skilled and explosive fighter. And it’s shown in Morgan’s paychecks as he has made 150k extra in bonuses since joining the UFC last September.

Julio Arce would be a good fight for Charriere. Arce is a 10-fight UFC vet that is product of the 2017 season of the Contender Series. Arce has won three of his last five fights including his most recent bout back in March against Herbert Burns. Arce is the fight to make, and he will likely stay at featherweight for his next fight.

Morgan’s next fight: Julio Arce

Fares Ziam

Fares Ziam steamrolled Matt Frevolla with a crafty knee from clinch range to stop the fight in the final round of their bout. Ziam is now on a hot streak and has won four fights in a row since his February of 2022 loss to Terrance McKinney. This victory was his first finish on the win streak, and he rightfully earned a performance bonus for his handy work.

In his next fight, Fares Ziam should take on Drakkar Klose. Klose is also riding a four-fight win streak in the UFC. He was last in the octagon back in May with a unanimous decision victory over Joaquim Silva. Klose’s 2023 slam KO of Joe Solecki also has a similar big finish feel to Ziam’s win over Frevolla.

Fares’ next fight: Drakkar Klose

UFC Paris featured a deep crop of French fighters representing for their country. The crowd was present and loud as usual. One of those French stars was one half of the main event, Benoit Saint-Denis, who came out on the wrong end of second round stoppage at the hands of Renato Moicano. And in a pivotal middleweight co-main event, Brendan Allen was the loser in a would-be title eliminator. A couple of absolutely crushing defeats including some painful stoppages, as fighters from the card eye their next match ups.

Benoit Saint-Denis

Benoit Saint-Denis was thoroughly whooped via ground n’ pound sustaining tremendous damage before the octagon-side physician stopped the bout at the end of the second. Much to the dismay of the French crowd the hometown hero Benoit just could not get it done against #11 UFC lightweight, Renato Moicano.

Benoit Saint-Denis is now 5-3 in the UFC and has lost two in a row with Dustin Poirier stopping him earlier this year at UFC 299.

Benoit Saint-Denis should fight Jalin Turner in his next bout. Turner is ranked at #14 in the UFC’s lightweight division. Turner has lost three of his last four fights with his lone win coming against Bobby Green (while losing split decisions to Mateusz Gamrot and Dan Hooker). In his most recent fight, Renato Moicano rallied from behind to stop Turner in the second. This fight just makes sense.

Benoit’s next fight: Jalin Turner

Brendan Allen

Brendan Allen was shut down in the co-main event of UFC Paris by Nassourdine Imavov.

Allen entered the fight ranked at #8 in the middleweight division and jumped up to fight the #4 ranked Nassourdine Imavov. Well, it seemed like it in there as Allen was simply outclassed and it looked like it was not his night.

The loss snapped Allen’s 7-fight win streak that dated back to his December of 2021 second-round stoppage loss at the hands of Chris Curtis (a loss which he had just avenged in his most recent victory). This is truly a tough loss for Allen.

Marvin Vettori should be Allen’s next fight. Allen was matched up to fight Marvin Vettori back in April before Vettori withdrew from the bout. The pair’s scuffle earlier this year outside of the cage would also add to the appeal of this fight and Vettori is ranked at #6 at 185lbs.

Brendan’s next fight: Marvin Vettori

Joanderson Brito

Joanderson Brito came out on the wrong side of a split decision against France’s William Gomis. In what was a controversial decision, Brito now has his shiny five-fight, five-finish streak snapped by a loss that was well within striking distance.

Joanderson was supposed to fight Dan Ige in July before Ige stepped up on short notice to save a card. Needless to say, Brito might have to win a couple more fights before he’s within striking distance of the top 15 again. A truly bitter pill to swallow but a very common story.

Brito should get a solid name for his next fight. Sodiq Yusuff is on a two-fight skid and has slipped out of the rankings at featherweight. This would be an action-packed fight. Yusuff was last in action at UFC 300 earlier this year when Deigo Lopes took less than 90 seconds to stop him.

Joanderson’s next fight: Sodiq Yusuff

Kevin Jousset

Kevin Jousset was overwhelmed and melted by Carolina product Bryan Battle in the second round of their bout on Saturday. It was just Jousset’s third fight in the UFC after stopping Kiefer Crosbie in his debut and defeating Kenan Song back in December.

A disappointing showing at home, but Jousset should look to bounce back by fighting Preston Parsons. Preston is 2-3 in the UFC and coming off of a unanimous decision loss to Oban Elliot in July.

Kevin’s next fight: Preston Parsons

Gabriel Miranda

Gabriel Miranda was put away in a quick sequence during the second round of his bout with Morgan Charriere on Saturday at UFC Paris. Miranada is now 1-2 in the UFC, though the one loss is to Benoit Saint-Denis in his promotional debut.

Miranda should fight a guy that is also 1-2 in the UFC but also fought incredibly stiff competition. Miranda should take on Westin Wilson in his next fight. Wilson won his most recent bout against Jeka Saragih in June but was finished by Joanderson Brito and Jean Silva who fans now know are pretty tough. Should be the battle of the already tested “new guys.”

Gabriel’s next fight: Westin Wilson

Matt Frevola

Matt Frevloa was obliterated courtesy of a sneaky knee from his opponent, Fares Ziam, to start the main card of UFC Paris. To make matters worse, the stoppage came with just two minutes left in the fight left to go.

Frevola is now 5-5-1 in the UFC since winning on the 2017 season of the Contender Series. Matt has lost two of his last three fights. His lone win was against Drew Dober in May of last year. Frevola stopped the ultra-durable Dober in the first round and earned himself a performance bonus. Matt’s now been stopped twice since then, the other time courtesy of a head kick by Benoit Saint-Denis.

A good next fight for Frevola would be against Jared Gordon. Jared is 2-3, 1 NC in his last six fights. He has had a rough go. Gordon was last in the octagon back in June when he lost a controversial split decision to Nasrat Haqparast. Much like Frevola, Gordon is a very fun fighter with a great attitude, so it seems like the fight to make.

Matt’s next fight: Jared Gordon

This year’s UFC Paris card was a solid spectacle of individual efforts from a number of fighters, and four of those were rewarded when it came time for bonuses to be handed out.

Six finishes decorated the Fight Night card (though many of the night’s prelims did go the distance), including the main event between Renato Moicano and Benoit Saint-Denis. That ended early due to a doctor’s stoppage when BSD was unable to pass a vision check, both eyes swelling shut.

That fight did not earn any bonus money, but main card opener Fares Ziam did, for a brutal knee landed on Matt Frevola that put that “Steamrolla” out cold on the canvas. For Ziam, it was a signature win, and a new look, as the lightweight had eschewed his normal, patient fighting style and come out hot right out of the gate.

Also picking up bonus cash at UFC Paris was Morgan Charriere, who in the very next fight put down Gabriel Miranda with a punch. Miranda, who had gone out of position, attempted a weak backhand before Charriere connected with the finishing blow.

It wasn’t all bonus money and glory for French fighters at UFC Paris, however, as TUF 29 winner Bryan Battle put away Kevin Jousset to pick up his own Performance of the Night award. The final bonus went to Chris Duncan, for a technical submission finish (guillotine) of Bolaji Oki to kick off the preliminary card.

UFC featherweight Renato Moicano looked to continue his rise up the rankings, but he’d have to do it against the very dangerous Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC Paris on Saturday.

Moicano (19-5-1) held an impressive 4-fight win streak with victories over Brad Riddell, Drew Dober, Jalin Turner and Cristian Guzman. One of the more popular fighters on the roster ‘Money’ Moicano went into enemy territory looking for that fifth consecutive win.

Saint Denis (13-2) took the lightweight division by storm rattling off five straight wins until he ran into Dustin Poirier at UFC 299 in March. Wins over Ismael Bonfim, Thiago Moises and Matt Frevola has BSD poised to bounce back from the loss to ‘The Diamond.’

Within 30 seconds, Renato Moicano had stepped inside and earned the first takedown of the fight, neutralizing the power of BSD. Moicano wound up in half guard, while Saint-Denis relied on a butterfly guard, eventually forcing Moicano back and threatening with upkicks. Moicano re-engaged, however, taking the back and getting a body lock in place. Moicano used that to move to mount, firing a couple of nasty elbows. Right hands followed, and BSD could just roll and twist, little hope of escape. He signaled a thumbs up, but was anything but okay. Saint-Denis was soon flat on his back, Moucano still in mount, two minutes on the clock. BSD was bloodied, battered, but somehow hanging on. And, rather impressively, he regained full guard.

After trying to scramble out, however, Saint-Denis gave up his back. Moicano jumped on that but didn’t have the finish. However, he wound up back in half-guard on top of a blooded BSD with a minute left on the clock. The fact that he survived the round was perhaps the most impressive thing about BSD’s opening round; Moicano, meanwhile, had lived up to his “money” nickname.

Between rounds, Saint-Denis’ corner implored him to “wake up.” The pair went back-and-forth on the feet early in the second, Saint-Denis still wearing the damage inflicted in round one. Despite that, Saint-Denis was able to get some offensive in throughout the second, utilizing his boxing. Moicano kept pace, mixing in kicks, and looking the fresher of the two fighters. Both of the French fighter’s eyes had swollen, however, with the doctor being brought in to check on BSD before the start of round three. The doctor held up fingers, with Saint-Denis getting too many questions wrong, specifically with his right eye. That led to ref Marc Goddard waving off the fight, bringing about a rather muted end to UFC Paris and its main event.

Official Result: Renato Moicano def. Benoit Saint-Denis by TKO (doctor’s stoppage), Round 2, 5:00

UFC middleweights looking to add their names to the title shot list met at UFC Paris on Saturday, as Nassourdine Imavov and Brendan Allen did battle in France.

#4 Imavov (14-4) brought his 6-2-1 UFC record into UFC Paris riding a two-fight win streak with victories over Jared Cannonier and Roman Dolidze respectively.

#8 Allen (24-5) was on a tear putting together a 7-fight win streak and looking to force his way into the top 5 and a title shot.

Both men had plenty to say about each other in the lead up to the fight, but Allen alleged that ‘corrupt’ French officials forced him to go through extra drug testing that Imavov did not have to do. Nothing official has been released by the UFC or French officials on the matter as of fight night.

Allen went right to work in Saturday’s co-main event, firing a couple of punches then landing an early takedown. With over four and a half minutes on the clock and 1/1 in takedowns, Allen worked from side control, looking to set up an arm-triangle choke. A full two minutes would tick away, with Allen then finding himself in half guard after attempting to move to mount. Allen never did make it to mount, but finished the round in control, spending over four minutes on top and avoiding damage all but entirely.

Round two saw Imavov poke Allen in the eye seconds in, as Allen was closing the distance. After a brief pause, they went back to work, Allen driving Imavov into the fence, looking for another takedown. This time, Imavov sprawled, pushed Allen’s head down, and stuffed the attempt. When Allen flipped to his back, tryin to lure Imavov into his guard, France’s Imavov politely declined, stepping back and waving Allen up.

Moments later, Allen shot for another takedown, with Imavov again stuffing the attempt, sprawling. That allowed him to land a punch or two from the back. Allen then wound up on his back, Imavov firing hammer fists! When they got back up, Allen returned fire, and a back-and-forth battle ensued for a few moments before a single-leg takedown attempt from Allen. That was stuffed by Imavov, who had clearly learned in round one that he did not want to be on his back under Allen.

Between rounds, Allen’s corner suggested that the fight was 1-1, trying to boost their fighter up by saying “you’re better than him.” Still, a sloppy takedown by Allen was easily stuffed, with Imavov again ending up on top, in guard. Backing off and avoiding an upkick, Imavov attempted to land a heavy, diving ground strike. Allen would make it back up, however, again looking for a single-leg takedown only for Imavov to stuff it.

In the final minute, the pair opened up, both fighters swinging hard. Neither found the knockout blow, Allen saw one more takedown stuffed, and off to the scorecards they went with Imavov likely up.

“My objective now is the belt,” Imavov said following the victory, which saw 29-28 scores awarded on all three scorecards. He addressed Dana White and the matchmakers, saying he had “proved himself” in terms of a title shot.

Official Result: Nassourdine Imavov def. Brendan Allen by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

KSW veteran and well-traveled European standout Ivan Erslan arrived in the octagon at UFC Paris, welcomed by Moldova’s Ion Cutelaba.

The promotion thought enough of the pairing to set it as the featured prelim in Paris, with Cutelaba looking to bounce back from a loss to Philipe Lins. Erslan had won his final KSW bout in February and was bypassing the usual routes like the Contender Series, Ultimate Fighter, and Dana White’s Lookin’ for a Fight to land in the UFC.

The fight kicked off and Erslan was the first one to land with a nice right hand. Cutelaba responded with a leg kick. Erslan got off some good punches in the clich but Cutelaba landed hard having Erslan back up. Both guys were starting to sit down on their punches. Cutelaba was doing a bit more chasing and Erslan was timing his strikes. Cutelaba attempted a takedown but an easy stuff from Erslan. Erslan was doing good with the jab but Cutelaba did drop him briefly with the right. It didn’t really hurt Erslan but Cutelaba got a takedown. It didn’t last long as Erslan got right back to his feet. With a minute left Erslan landed a good outside leg kick and one-two. Cutelaba was trying to crash the pocket but didn’t land anything in the closing seconds.

In round two Cutelaba was active early mixing it up. He was throwing the leg kicks with the punches while mixing in the takedown attempts. Erslan was more tentative early in round two maybe looking for the opening. Erslan would attempt a takedown of his own half way through the round but nothing. Right after Cutelaba got in on a single leg and kicked out the planted leg to take the back. Erslan almost gave him his nack but was able to get back to his feet. With a minute left as they broke off the clinch, Cutelaba got a nicely-times double leg. Cutelaba made a mistake jumping on the back too high and fell off the back. Erslan ended the round on top but did zero damage.

In the final round, it was pretty clear Erslan needed a finish. The round started with Erslan pressing forward. Erslan probably wanting a brawl but Cutelaba shot in for a takedown. It was badly timed and Erslan defended as Cutelaba pulled guard. Cutelaba stuck off his back was obviously breathing heavily. Erslan was lacking the urgency landing almost nothing. Cutelaba almost got to his feet but instead, Erslan remained in the guard. Cutelaba was able to work to his knees and get back up. Erslan still had control of the waist he’s pull Cutelaba down. Needing a finish Erslan was too patient. Cutelaba would finally reverse positions along the cage and got the takedown right as the bell sounded.

Official Result: Ion Cutelaba def. Ivan Erslan by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

KSW veteran and well-traveled European light heavyweight Ivan Erslan makes his octagon debut at UFC Paris on Saturday, September 28, 2024. At the Accor Arena on a card headlined by Renato Moicano and Benoit Saint-Denis, Croatia’s Erslan faces Ion “The Hulk” Cutelaba.

Ivan Erslan
Standing at six-foot-three
Fighting at 1205 lbs (light-heavyweight)
32-years-old
Fighting out of Obrovac, Croatia
Training out of American Top Team Zagreb
A pro record of 14-3, 1 NC
10 KO/TKOs, 1 Submission

Lately, the UFC has been signing guys coming off just one win. With Erslan I am fine with that. I’m fine with it because Erslan is UFC level and he isn’t getting any younger. Also, the last guy he lost to, he had also beat before that. Erslan has good wins over not-so-great opponents but credible guys outside the UFC. Darwin Rodriguez, Rafal Kijanczuk, Dirlei Broenstrup, Bogdan Gnidko, and former UFC fighter Luis Henrique da Silva are solid wins.

I believe the first thing I noticed about Erslan is his high guard. With the high guard, he likes to throw the jab. As a jab is a valuable weapon, though I believe it’s least valuable at the heavier weight classes. I say that because if not done perfectly it leaves you open to the looping punches and hooks. With the way Erslan throws the jab, he leans his head into it more than he should. You want to see more of a snapping jab but he sits down on it too much. It’s still useful to have but he just throws it too much. Where Erslan is most dangerous is thriving in the chaos. He starts off clean with the jab and then just unleashes wild overhands. He’s dangerous in those wild exchanges where his chin has held up and his power perseveres.

Erslan has been knocked out and it’s because the way he fights is volatile. The way he just throws caution to the wind in the pocket, sometimes he’s just a nail and not the hammer. I do see Erslan doing well in the UFC. He doesn’t have any major holes in his game. His cardio is fine and his takedown defense is good enough. I don’t rate his ground game all that highly but it’s tough to even get him there. I will say in the UFC there will be guys much better in the wrestling than who he’s fought in KSW. I believe Erslan could be a fixture in the light heavyweight division for a couple years. I don’t think he will ever be ranked but he’ll be right outside of that.

How he matches up with Cutelaba:

Cutelaba, despite a lot of his performances, is a solid fighter. He’s a power puncher and a strong wrestler as well as a menace on top. The big issue with him is that he has bad mental gaps. I believe if he fights smart and uses his wrestling he’ll get a win. Him fighting smart is hard to trust however. If he does decide to trade with Erslan I believe Cutelaba will get caught. I believe that will happen, because Cutelaba is fighting a debutant coming off a bad loss. He’s going to want to go out there and make a statement and it’ll cost him.

Brazilian featherweight Joanderson Brito was supposed to clash with Dan Ige in July, but we all know how that fight played out: it didn’t.

Brito (17-3-1) pulled out of the fight with a leg injury, and Ige was rebooked with Chepe Mariscal only to be pulled from that match-up to help salvage the UFC 303 card, brought in on mere hours’ notice the day of the fight to face Diego Lopes. Brito, who had been scheduled to fight just weeks later originally, instead had to heal up- and watch Lopes, who he holds a win over on the Contender Series, earn himself a spot in the running for Fighter of the Year.

The win over Lopes has aged particularly well, though Brito believes the UFC has maneuvered Lopes to the top of the featherweight division.

“I think it shows a little bit of what I’m capable of doing, and I think Diego’s in the top three because the UFC worked on putting him there,” Brito exclaimed during this week’s UFC Paris media day, ahead of a fight with William Gomis. “In all reality, I’m the champion of the division, I just haven’t had the chance to fight for it.”

If that seems at all dismissive, Brito didn’t seem to think much of his upcoming opponent, Gomis, either. “To be honest I don’t think he’s that much, nothing special. He’s just going to be another guy that I’m going to take down.”

Gomis has claimed that he’s going to make it look easy against Brito, and for that, the Brazilian had a response.

“In reality, I know what’s going to happen, all of you in the media knows what’s going to happen, the UFC knows what’s going to happen, even his team knows what’s going to happen. But when it happens, he’s going to realize he wasn’t prepared for it.”

Tabatha Ricci (10-2) will be making just her second main card appearance on August 24th. The #11 ranked UFC strawweight is 5-2 in the UFC since joining the promotion in 2021. Ricci snagged a split decision victory over Tecia Pennington in her last fight, back in May.

UFC Vegas 96 has added yet another middleweight fight scheduled for the UFC Apex. Edmen Shahbazyan will take on Gerald Meerschaert on August 24, 2024 in a three-round, main card fight.

News of the fight was first announced by Marcel Dorff of Eurosport on Friday, across his various social media accounts. Both fighters confirmed the booking on their respective Instagram Story.

Edmen Shahbazyan (13-4) is 6-4 with the UFC. A 2018 Contender Series product, Shahbazyan started his career hot, accumulating a three-fight win streak and finishing all three opponents. Edmen would then embark on a three-fight skid prompting him to leave his longtime gym, Glendale Fighting Club, in favor of Xtreme Couture. The 26-year-old is now 2-1 since switching gyms though he has seen a notable step back in competition. His most recent time out was a pivotal victory via first-round finish against AJ Dobson back in March.

Gerald Meerschaert (36-17) is a submission specialist and 20-fight veteran of the UFC. Meerschaert has faced a lot of names at 185lbs. and finished all of his victories, including 10 by submission. The 36-year-old has become something of a litmus test for solid fighters in recent years, losing to the likes of Krzysztof Jotko, Joe Pyfer and Andre Petroski since April of 2022. Gerald has won just two of his last five fights including his most recent bout, a second-round rear naked choke victory against Bryan Barberena, back in March. His other win came against Bruno Silva via third round guillotine nearly two years ago.

With Shahbazyan vs. Meerschaert, UFC Vegas 96 now has two scheduled main card fights and five fights announced in total at the writing of this article. The line up for the APEX card is as follows:

Roman Kopylov vs. Brunno Ferreira

Edmen Shahbazyan vs. Gerald Meerschaert

Dennis Buzukja vs. Danny Silva

Jose Medina vs. Zach Reese

Viacheslav Borshchev vs. James Llontop
