Ben Askren didn’t get the win he wanted in his return to Singapore, his old stomping ground in ONE Championship, but he did take home an extra fifty grand Saturday at UFC Fight Night 162.

UFC Singapore was an odd duck of a card to say the least. The main event was a grappling fan’s dream, but outside Ben Askren and Demian Maia, the card lacked bonafide star power. The early prelims were a mixed bag, although a few fights stood out — including the debut of Loma Lookboonmee, the first ever Thai fighter to step in the octagon.

Bonus time, however, saw the main event earn Fight of the Night honors. Maybe that will take some of the sting off what ‘Funky’ Ben Askren called a “bad decision.” That bad decision came when he opted to engage on the ground with BJJ expert Demian Maia with over a minute left in the third round. Maia transitioned to Askren’s back, locked in a rear-naked choke and put the former Bellator and ONE champ to sleep.

A lot will be made about Askren’s fortunes and future in the UFC, has he drops to 1-2 in the promotion. It’s worth noting, however, that two judges had the fight tied heading into the third, and Askren was arguably winning the round until being choked out.

Maia, meanwhile, remains one of the most dangerous grapplers on the planet, having added Askren’s scalp to his collection, which also includes wins over Matt Brown, Carlos Condit, Jorge Masvidal, Jon Fitch, and Chael Sonnen, to name just a few.

Performance of the Night bonuses at UFC Singapore, meanwhile, went to Ciryl Gane, for his heel hook submission of Contender Series alum Don’Tale Mayes, and Beneil Dariush, who submitted the gritty Frank Camacho with a rear-naked choke.

$50,000 U.S. goes to the bonus winners as always.

Demian Maia put his grappling skills on display at UFC Singapore, choking-out Ben Askren in the third round of the highly anticipated main event.

Ben Askren’s UFC run ahead of his bout in Singapore had been an interesting one. A couple of unique fights, with one controversial victory to show for it, had taken some of the shine off of the previously undefeated multi-promotion champion. His wrestling talents are undeniable, but Askren had been unable to utilize them to the extent that some expected when he joined the promotion. Now, rather than facing top-tier strikers like Robbie Lawler and Jorge Masvidal, Askren was tasked with an opponent more in his wheelhouse.

That opponent at UFC Singapore just also happened to be one of the greatest grapplers in MMA history: Demian Maia. The Brazilian has showcased his jiu-jitsu skills time and time again, submitting and defeating a variety of stylistic opponents throughout his UFC career, which dates back to 2007.

Although he’s 2-3 in his last five fights, Maia was also 9-3 in his last 12. The fighters who’d defeated Maia in that stretch (Tyron Woodley, Kamaru Usman, and Colby Covington) all had similarly strong wrestling backgrounds to that of Askren, while “Funky” lacked the striking skills they possessed. On Saturday, we found out if that would be enough for Askren to get back to his winning ways.

Maia began the fight with a couple of strong left hands, landing one to the head and another to the body of Askren. Askren marched forward, threw a wild spinning back fist, and got the fight to the clinch. Askren paid for his aggression, eating several left hands from the Brazilian while being unable to get the fight to the ground. The duo traded shots and battled in the clinch a few times throughout the first round, with Maia’s striking giving him the early advantage. With 45-seconds left in the round, Askren was finally able to drag Maia to the ground from the clinch, but was quickly on defesne as Maia worked for a couple of submissions until the round ended.

Despite getting the worse of the striking exchanges, Askren’s pressure never waned, and began to give Maia more problems as round two went on. Askren was able to open up a couple of cuts on the face of Maia, landing more regularly in round two as Maia continued to back. The striking advantage that Maia had early in round-one seemed to fade, as Askren’s confidence grew with each landed punch. With a little more than a minute left in the round, Askren shot for another takedown and got the fight to the ground.

Once on the ground, Maia quickly worked for an omaplata, and was able to reverse position and take top control as Askren defended the submission. Maia worked himself into mount, landing some ground and pound, before taking the back and looking for a choke. Askren defended well, reversed position himself, and we got the grappling battle we were hoping for as the second round ended.

A minute into the third round, Askren got the fight to the ground with an impressive clinch throw. In top position, Askren was unable to make the most of his advantage, and Maia got the fight back to the feet quickly. After eating a couple of hard punches, Askren once again dragged Maia down to the mat. But, as had happened throughout the bout, Maia quickly reversed position and mounted Askren. He then took Askren’s back, locked on a body-triangle, and sunk in the rear-naked choke. Askren got one tap in before going unconscious.

Scotland’s Stevie Ray put together a strong final few minutes of his bout at UFC Sinagpore, taking a close decision win over Michael Johnson.

Promotion veteran Michael Johnson returned to lightweight at UFC Singapore, following a four-fight stretch at featherweight. The 33-year-old, who joined the UFC in 2010, went 2-2 in his run at 145-pounds. In his most recent bout, Johnson was defeated by Josh Emmett, getting knocked-out late in the third round. The move to featherweight came after a 1-4 stretch at 155-pounds, which ended with back-to-back losses to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje. Lightweight is likely the better career fit for Johnson, who missed weight in his penultimate featherweight fight, a decision win over Artem Lobov in October of last year.

While Johnson had faced some struggles ahead of UFC Singapore, the same could be said for fan-favorite Stevie Ray. The 29-year-old Scotland-native is 1-3 in his last four bouts, with two of those losses coming via first-round KO. Most recently Ray was stopped by Leonardo Santos in the first round at UFC Stockholm in June. The loss followed a decision win over Jessin Ayari last year. Overall, Ray had a 6-4 career record in the promotion before his bout with Johnson.

The duo traded leg kicks early, with both fighters landing during a couple of quick exchanges. Ray was committed to the leg kicks, and began to add more strikes to the end of his kicks, with neither fighter wanting to fight off of the back foot. The majority of the round took place in the center of the Octagon from relatively close range, as both men traded quick combinations. It was an even first five minutes, with Ray’s leg kicks potentially giving him the early advantage.

Johnson began round two more aggressive than the first, with much more movement. Johnson countered the first leg kick from Ray in the second stanza, landing a left hand to the head of Ray. The movement from Johnson seemed to open things up, as his jab began to find a home on the face of Ray more consistently. Ray responded with a couple of leg kicks, as the pace of the fight began to pick up. The duo again continued to trade quick combinations, landing well with their signarture left hands. The jabs from Johnson bloodied Ray’s nose, and the volume began to add up for Johnson as he took control toward the end of the round.

While both fighters landed consistently to begin round three, it was clear that Johnson’s punches were doing much more damage than Ray’s. A cut above Ray’s right eye was giving him some trouble, as Johnson’s left hand continued to find a home at the end of his combinations. Two minutes into the final round, Ray was able to get the fight to the ground, taking top control against the cage. The Scotland-native laid in some ground and pound, and eventually took Johnson’s back with a little less tan two minutes remaining in the fight.

Ray had a body triangle on Johnson, who was defending the rear-naked choke attempts from Ray well. Johnson was able to push Ray against the cage, not giving Ray the room to finish the choke. With 50-seconds left, Ray was able to get away from the cage, gave up on the choke, and fired off non-stop ground and pound from Johnson, who was covering up. Ray didn’t stop throwing until the horn sounded, as Johnson was able to defend until the fight ended.

Beneil Dariush looked confident and comfortable from the start at UFC Singapore, striking well before sinking in a rear-naked choke and forcing Frank Camacho to tap in the first round.

Frank Camacho doesn’t do boring fights. They’re not his thing. Ahead of UFC Singapore, three of his five career UFC fights were Fight of the Night award winners. The other two ended with second-round finishes. The 31-year-old is 22-7 overall in his career, with a 2-3 record in the UFC while fighting at both welterweight and lightweight. He won his most recent bout, at 155-pounds, finishing Nick Hein via TKO in June.

Beneil Dariush, a 15-fight UFC veteran going into his bout with Camacho, seemed to have found his groove. Dariush had a 10-4-1 record in the promotion before Singapore, winning his last two bouts. He looked patricularly impressive in his most recent fight, when he submitted Drew Dober in the second round in March.

Dariush was on-point from the start, landing a knee to the body, a couple of leg kicks, and some left hands to the head of Camacho. Camacho marched forward, but Dariush was comfortable striking from distance. With Camacaho on the back foot, Dariush landed a takedown and took the back of Camacho. In no time at all, Dariush had Camacho’s back and was working for a rear-naked choke. Camacho tried to defend the submission, but it was to no avail, as Dariush kept the pressure on and forced Camacho to tap.

Ciryl Gane continued his impressive UFC run, extending his record to 5-0 with a heel hook submission of Don’tale Mayes at UFC Singapore.

Ciryl Gane is one of the most exciting prospects in the UFC’s heavyweight division. The 28-year-old Frenchman made his promotional debut in his fourth professional fight in August, submitting Raphael Pessoa (who also fought at UFC Singapore) in the first round. With a 4-0 record heading into Singapore, Gane has showcased his muay thai background and versatile skill set. He’s also teammates with fellow heavyweight Francis Ngannou, whose rise up the ranks lit the division on fire.

Standing in the way of Gane’s rise was another impressive prospect: Don’tale Mayes. The 27-year-old has fought on the Dana White Contender Series in each of the last three summers, going 2-1 and winning his most recent two bouts. He’d tallied a 7-2 career record before UFC Singapore, with just two of his nine fights going to a decision.

Both fighters were moving well and active in the opening minute of the out, with nothing of note landing for either man. A couple of leg kicks from Mayes, and some solid body shots from Gane, broke the ice for the duo. A body kick from Gane around the halfway point of the round left Mayes open, and Gane took advantage with a solid right hand that put Mayes in trouble. The American kept his composure, but it wasn’t long until another body kick from Gane landed strong. Again, less than 30-seconds later, a body from Gane opened up the right hand which landed flush on Mayes’ head.

Mayes stayed tough in the face of adversity, and bigger and bigger shots from Gane continued to land from a variety of places. Body kicks and right hands were coming regularly, but it was a big left hand that did the most damage. A step-in elbow from Gane then opened up a cut beneath the right eye of Mayes, and the Frenchman pounced. While pouring on the strikes on a downed opponent, the horn would sound, and Mayes was saved by the bell.

Gane was on the front foot early in round two, continuing to work the body and keep Mayes backing up. Almost a minute into the round, a shot to the groin from Gane momentarily stopped the bout, as Mayes utilized the break to try and slow Gane’s momentum. Out of the break, Mayes landed a nice body kick of his own, but didn’t follow it up with anything of note. Both fighters threw more kicks in round two, with Gane comfortable fighting the fight at range. With a little more than a minute left in the second stanza, Gane landed a takedown, taking top control for the remainder of the round.

Likely down on the scorecards, Mayes looked like he was out of solutions in round three. Gane continued to throw a variety of strikes and march forward, keeping a tiring Mayes off balance while landing consistently. With 90-seconds left a body kick from Gane had Mayes grabbing at his torso and walking backward. Gane then forced Mayes against the cage, dragged him to the ground, and forced Mayes to tap with a heel-hook just before the final horn sounded.

Muslim Salikhov showcased his striking skills at UFC Singapore, soundly defeating Laureano Staropoli by unanimous decision and extending his winning streak to three fights.

Argentine Laureano Staropoli was on a seven fight winning streak, putting him at 9-1 in his career, heading into UFC Singapore. The 26-year-old managed to impress in his first two fights in the promotion, aftermaking his debut in November of last year. Staropoli had won both of his UFC bouts, defeating Hector Aldana and Thiago Alves by decision. While Alves was likely the toughest test of his career to date, that goalpost was pushed farther down the field after he was matched up with Muslim Salikhov.

Salikhov, 35, is a decorated kickboxer with a 15-2 professional MMA record full of impressive knockouts. He’d fought three times in the UFC, losing in his debut, but winning his last two bouts. Both of his victories came in knockout fashion, stopping Ricky Rainey and Nordine Taleb in the second round and first round, respectively.

Both fighters were patient in the opening minute of the bout, before each of them fired off spinning strikes that missed their opponent. Salikhov controlled the center of the Octagon, landing a couple of kicks and slightly getting the better of Staropoli in the first exchange of the fight after a couple of minutes. The Russian seemed to figure out his range first, often being the first of the duo to throw throughout round one. It was a very cagey first five minutes, with neither fighter able to take a notable lead.

Salikhov landed the first strike of note in the first 30-seconds of round two, smacking a spinning kick to the side of the head of Staropoli. Staropoli partially blocked the kick, and was able to continue to circle around the outside of the cage. Staropoli then landed a kick to the body of Salikhov, but went to the well shortly thereafter, which Salikhov caught and used to dump the Argentine to the ground. It didn’t amount to much, as the fight quickly returned to the feet. Less than a minute later, the same thing would happen, with the same result.

Once back on the feet, Salikhov kicked up the aggression, unleashing a flurry and sending Staropoli back into the cage. A right hand from the Russian clearly hurt Staropoli. Seizing on the moment, Salikhov rained more than a dozen punches to the head of Staropoli, who managed to cover up and survive the onslaught. The Argentine was eventually able to somewhat recover, get away from the cage, and utilize his defense and movement to make it out of the round.

Staropoli, potentially down on the cards, came out much more aggressive to open the third round. On the front foot, Staropoli pushed Salikhov up against the cage, but quickly found himself defending a takedown. Although he defended the takedown, Salikhov was able to once again take control in the center of the Octagon. Throughout the final minutes of the fight, Salikhov was the quicker and more accurate striker of the two, with his wide variety of shots finding Staropoli on a regular basis. Staropoli held his own, but seemed just a tick behind Salikhov on the feet.

Randa Markos took home a razor-thin decision against Ashley Yoder at UFC Singapore on Saturday, closing out the preliminary card.

A couple of The Ultimate Fighter and UFC veterans in Randa Markos and Ashley Yoder fought in a strawweight battle in Singapore on Saturday. Yoder was looking to extend her winning streak to three fights, her longest since joining the promotion in 2016. The 32-year-old has back-to-back decision wins over Amanda Cooper and Syuri Kondo, pushing her career record to 7-4.

Markos, on the other hand, was looking to get back into the win column after stepping in on short-notice at UFC Singapore. She hadn’t won, or lost, back-to-back fights since joining the UFC in 2014, tallying a 5-6-1 record over 12 fights. Markos was 1-1 in 2019 ahead of her bout with Yoder, submitting Angela Hill in the first round in March, before losing a decision to Claudia Gadelha at UFC 239 in July.

Canada’s Markos would close the distance early at UFC Singapore, tying up Yoder along the fence. Yoder, with a noticable size advantage, controlled the wrist of Markos, and eventually overpowered her, landing her own takedown. Yoder moved to side control, but was in an awkward position, and Markos worked for a reverse triangle. Yoder maintained her compusre, while Markos proved she was dangerous off her back. Yoder, however, pulled free and began softening up the body with punches, She would try to isolate an arm, but ultimately failing. As they got back up, Markos dragged the fight right back down, trying for a choke. She didn’t have it, but Markos was now in dominant position, looking to latch on to an arm. They’d spend the last ten seconds on the feet, where Yoder had the advantage early.

Markos closed the gap early in the second, only to be reversed, and ended up trading in the clinch. The Canadian landed a solid elbow, and in a second clinch, clipped Yoder with a pair of uppercuts. Out of the clinch, Markos would clip Yoder again, this time with a right hand. Yoder would return fire. Another blow connected for Markos, but Yoder changed levels, landing a takedown and moving to half-guard. A couple of elbows from the top were a sign of things to come. Yoder would add more of those later, improving position. But Markos would scramble free, tagging Yoder with a punch as she did so. Markos got on top, slicing through the guard with her knee, then landing hammer fists to close out the round.

“Anybody’s fight heading into the third round” might be a bit cliche, but that was pretty much the case in Markos vs. Yoder. The pair kept it standing early in the round, with Markos utilizing her jab. In the turning point of the fight, Markos moved in, thinking takedown, but a scramble allowed Yoder to take the back. Markos looked to transition to top, but had to settle for trapping Yoder in half guard. Markos scrambled up, but it was Yoder firing off a body kick. Markos tagged Yoder with a left late, while Yoder fired a number of front kicks. Big swings from Markos closed out the final round, and they headed to the scorecards. There, two judges gave it to the Canadian.

With the win, Markos continues the aforementioned trend of trading wins and losses throughout her UFC run. ‘The Quiet Storm’ has never won two fights in a row, but she’s never lost two in a row, either. Only a draw has interrupted that pattern, but she’ll get a chance to put together her first win streak next time out.

Rafael Fiziev secured his first UFC win on Saturday, putting on a strong showing against Alex White at UFC Singapore.

Rafael Fiziev was looking for his first career UFC win in Singapore, following a loss in his promotional debut in April. The 26-year-old muay thai specialist tallied a 6-1 MMA record ahead of his bout, impressing in his relatively short career. Breaking into the loaded UFC lightweight division is no easy task, with difficult competition throughout the weight class.

Just ask Alex White. Fiziev’s opponent at UFC Singapore, White has been battling in the promotion’s 155-pound division for years. He’s 2-3 in his last five fights, and 4-5 overall in the UFC. White got back in the win column in his most recent bout, defeating Dan Moret by unanimous decision in March.

Fiziev seemed to have a single-minded focus early against Alex White: attack the leg, and attack it hard. But ninety seconds in, Fiziev caught White in an exchange, setting the crowd afire, and forcing White to retreat. Fiziev would then move in, engaging in a clinch and landing knee after knee to the head, splitting the guard. White, miraculously, avoided any visible damage. And at the halfway mark, he landed a right hand, signifying he remained in the fight. A pair of lefts followed for White, who then closed the distance and drove Fiziev into the cage. He’d end up reversed, pushed back to center, where he’d land a knee before the break. They’d end the round in a much closer fight than they’d started out in.

Fiziev letting the hands fly early in round 1! #UFCSingapore pic.twitter.com/Ea1w0ycPry

Fiziev fanned on a spinning kick early in the second, but followed it up with a hard right hand. White changed levels, timing the shot well, but with his back to the fence, Fiziev was able to fight the attempt off. He began bullying White, backing him up, and attacking the body. White’s hands were low, his mouth was open, and he was showing some damage by the eye. White would again shoot for a takedown, only for Fiziev to show impressive balance in fighting the attempt off. Fiziev would land to the head with a kick, which was at least partially blocked. At the end of the frame, White was still engaging, but he was well behind.

In the third, they’d go to the ground early, Fiziev on top. They would not stay down long; back on the feet, Fiziev chopped at the leg, then mixed things up with a high kick. All the while, the pair traded, Fiziev getting the better of the exchanges. White, bloodied, was going to need a miracle, but those were in short supply Saturday.

Movsar Evloev earned a unanimous decision over Enrique Barzola at UFC Singapore, but the fight was a lot closer than it looked on paper.

Movsar Evloev was looking to continue the undefeated run to start his career at UFC Singapore. The 25-year-old Russian was 11-0 before the bout, and 1-0 since joining the promotion. The move to the UFC followed an impressive run as the M-1 Challenge bantamweight champion. He’s joined the featherweight division in his time in the UFC, defeating Seung Woo Choi by unanimous decision in his promotional debut in April.

Looking to end Evloev’s run was eight-fight UFC veteran Enrique Barzola. Barzola joined the promotion in 2015 after winning The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 2 as a lightweight. The 30-year-old Peruvian was 6-2 in the UFC, going 1-1 in 2019 with a loss to Kevin Aguilar and victory over Bobby Moffett.

A fit of a feeling out period opened up Barzola vs. Evloev. Barzola got his jab going, and fired a leg kick. Evloev answered with a crisp jab of his own, and it appeared the feeling out process was complete. Evoloev’s jab continued to hit the mark, and when it hit, it hit hard. The jab was also setting up other attacks for Evloev, who was looking strong on the feet. Despite that, roughly two minutes in, he secured a takedown. As Barzola got back to his feet, he nearly gave up his neck. But Enrique escaped, and cracked Evoloev with a punch, halting his momentum momentarily. Evolev would catch Barzola with a right at the one-minute mark, then catch a kick and drag his opponent to the ground.

Entering the second, Barzola had a bit of swelling around the left eye. Evloev got a little sloppy moving in, and nearly paid for it, but he’d drag Barzola to the ground. They didn’t stay there, with Brazola immediately back up, back to the fence. The pair would trade combinations, both men landing. Barzola was far more aggressive in the second, and seemed to have found his rhythm. For all Evloev’s success in the takedown department, he couldn’t keep Barzola there. That seemed to translate to a confidence boost, as Barzola began attacking with more fervor. In the final minute, he hoisted Evloev up and slammed him down for a takedown of his own! Barzola ended the round on top, working in some ground n’ pound at a frantic pace.

In the third, Barzola looked to punch his way in, shooting for a single. But Evloev beat him to the punch, looking for a single leg takedown of his own. They essentially cancelled each other out, moving back to center and trading, both men landing. Evloev changed levels for a takedown, but Barzola scrambled and took control. Later in the round, Barzola would catch his opponent with a left. Evloev answered with a 1-2 combo, but moments after, a low blow connected, as Barzola’s foot landed low on a jump knee.

More strikes than you could count populated the final two minutes, with both men landing. They’d battle it out to the bell, leaving it up to the judges to decide whether Barzola’s comeback in the second and third was successful. It was, but there were no losers in this one.

Sergei Pavlovich steamrolled Maurice Greene early at UFC Singapore, putting the American away within a round.

Maurice Greene had impressed in his three fight UFC career ahead of UFC Singapore. “The Crochet Boss” was 3-0 ahead of his bout with Sergei Pavlovich, tallying two of those victories in 2019. In his most recent bout, Greene stopped Junior Albini in the first round, improving his overall record to 8-2 and setting up the biggest fight of his career to-date in Singapore.

Standing in the way of a four-fight winning streak for Greene was the 27-year-old Pavlovich. The former Fight Nights Global heavyweight champion rebounded from suffering his first career loss in his UFC debut last November, when he was finished in the first round by Alistair Overeem, with a first-round finish of his own against Marcelo Golm in April. Pavlovich was still one of the top prospects in the promotion’s heavyweight division, despite the rough start, with more tough match-ups ahead for the Russian.

Early on at UFC Singapore, Pavlovich countered Greene’s kicks by firing straight punches up the middle. Pavlovich would catch Greene with a left, but the real damage would come moments later. Pavlovich would back Greene up against the cage, starting with a jab. An overhand right caught the American, and a barrage of strikes followed. Greene was down, and though he’d survive for a bit, the ref broke things up soon enough. Greene protested the stoppage, but to no avail.

Done in One!

Pavlovich puts Greene away in round 1 #UFCSingapore pic.twitter.com/5Eu4VqmZnG

— UFC (@ufc) October 26, 2019

After dropping his debut to Overeem, Pavlovich has put together a two-fight finishing streak, with both wins coming in the first round. That will make him one to watch moving forward, and in the thin heavyweight division, he’s probably looking at a slightly bigger name next.
