A third fighter has retired after losing at UFC Stockholm, as English light heavyweight Jimi Manuwa will hang up the gloves.

Jimi Manuwa announced his retirement on Instagram.

Manuwa was defeated in just 42 seconds at UFC Stockholm by head kick KO at the hands of Aleksandar Rakic. The defeat was his fourth in a row.

“Posterboy” explained his journey on his Instagram post, discovering the sport at 26, beginning training at 28, and fighting in the UFC at 32. Fighting for nearly seven years at the highest level, Manuwa was a feared knockout artist at his peak. The Englishman added that he plans on staying in combat sports in a non-fighting capacity, saying, “I feel it’s my obligation to give more to combat sports, which I love dearly outside of fighting.”

Manuwa started his career later than most, beginning training at 28 with no prior combat experience. It was his calling though, knocking out 10 of his first 11 opponents and submitting the other. During that run in England, he turned down two contract offers from the UFC.

He finally signed with the promotion in 2012 and had an odd start to his Octagon run. Manuwa’s first two opponents in the UFC were stopped on the stool between rounds, and the third lost due to a leg injury.

After losing two of his next three to top contenders Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Johnson, Jimi Manuwa had the best run of his career. His knockout artist ways returned with big KO wins over Ovince Saint Preux and Corey Anderson.

It was assumed that he needed one more win for a title shot, but he was on the receiving end of one of the quick knockouts of Volkan Oezdemir. That, unfortunately, sent his career on a tailspin, losing his next three fights, two by knockout.

Overall, the 39-year-old retires with a 17-6 record that includes 16 stoppages, two Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night bonuses.

UFC Stockholm is in the books. Fans are impatient so we’re already wondering what is next for the fighters on the card. No worries. We got you.

With UFC Stockholm in the books, it’s time once again to look at some of the fighters on the card and see what’s next for the winners and losers. Why don’t we get started?

Christos Giagos Cruises to a Win Over Damir Hadzovic

The California native, Christos Giagos, easily got the win over Damir Hadzovic at UFC Stockholm this past weekend. Giagos showed better striking and, more importantly, improved wrestling. Giagos continues to show he’s back in the UFC for good this time as he gets the win over Hadzovic and will look to make a climb up the crowded lightweight division.

Hadzovic, on the other hand, couldn’t get much going against Christos. When he would start anything of significance, Giagos either answered back with a counter or a takedown. Hadzovic fell to 3-3 in the UFC after snapping his two-fight win streak. He will look to tread water without going under in his next fight.

Next Opponent for Christos Giagos: Drew Dober/Polo Reyes Winner, Yancy Medeiros
Next Opponent for Damir Hadzovic: Matt Frevola, Thiago Moises

Makwan Amirkhani Gets it Done

Makwan Amirkhani managed to get some work in against Chris Fishgold. Amirkhani locked up a wicked anaconda choke in the second round that won him the fight and a Performance of the Night bonus. The featherweight prospect moves to 5-1 in the UFC with three insane finishes. His lone loss in 2017 was a split decision that he didn’t look terrible in.

Chris Fishgold will likely kick himself for the loss at UFC Stockholm. While on the ground, he kept circling to avoid Amirkhani locking down the choke. He seemingly stopped to try something else, which is what essentially did his night in. If he keeps spinning for another 35 seconds, he makes it out that round to fight a third round to get the W.

Next Opponent for Makwan Amirkhani: Myles Jury, Arnold Allen Rematch
Next Opponent for Chris Fishgold: Kyle Bochniak, Nad Narimani

Aleksandar Rakic Launches Jimi Manuwa’s Head into Orbit

Aleksandar Rakic stated his case for best young prospect in the UFC. While we didn’t get to see much of his arsenal, the crisp high kick was all he needed to dispatch light heavyweight veteran Jimi Manuwa. The knockout was about as on the money you can get and earned Rakic the Performance of the Night award as well. Rakic will only have a tougher road to climb from here. With new blood coming through the division, he might have to wait in line and notch another win or two.

Jimi Manuwa has fallen on tough times. Once one of the most feared punchers in the division, Manuwa has lost four-straight fights, three by knockout. He’s taken some damage recently and at 39 years of age, it might be time to hang up the gloves. Fair’s fair if he wants to fight at home one more time and hang the gloves up.

Next Opponent for Aleksandar Rakic: Volkan Oezdemir, Corey Anderson
Next Opponent for Jimi Manuwa: Ed Herman, Gian Villante

Anthony Smith Retires Alexander Gustafsson

First, we will start with the winner. Anthony Smith came into the bout with Alexander Gustafsson after a one-sided ass whooping from Jon Jones. That situation can be mentally strenuous on anyone. But, the now 36-fight veteran didn’t let that bother him. He took the fight to the taller, bigger, longer Alexander Gustafsson, getting the rear-naked choke that got him back in the picture for a second title shot. It will take another win for him to get that shot, but for now, Smith is back to his winning ways at light heavyweight after UFC Stockholm.

Alexander Gustafsson is usually better in the later rounds, and he was just getting started in his fight with Smith. Gus managed to get a takedown earlier in the fight, but it was an ill-advised hip toss that let Smith get his back, flatten him out, and get the finish. Gus retired in the cage. It would have been nice to see him go out on a win, but he had a fantastic career with some of the best fights in recent memory.

Next Opponent for Anthony Smith: Dominick Reyes, Luke Rockhold (Win or Lose)

The post UFC Stockholm Aftermath: Anthony Smith Bounces Back to Winning Ways appeared first on Cageside Press.

UFC Stockholm took place Saturday night, and there’s a lot to take away from the ESPN card.

UFC Stockholm took place Saturday night from the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden. In the main event, it was a showdown of former UFC title challengers, with Anthony Smith submitting Alexander Gustafsson in the fourth round in what ended up being Gustafsson’s last bout. In the co-main, we saw the young Aleksander Rakic knocking out Jimi Manuwa via a stunning head kick. Here are some takeaways from the card in Sweden.

Anthony Smith is a Legit Light Heavyweight

After his defeat to Jon Jones at UFC 235, there was a lot of doubt about Smith’s potential at 205 pounds. While always looking the part in his wins over former champions Shogun Rua, and Rashad Evans, they are absolutely past their best days and aren’t that big of wins in 2018. His win over Volkan Oezdemir was good at the moment, however, hasn’t aged as well as Volkan has lost three fights in a row (including the Smith fight). So going into this fight with former light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson, Smith had lots to prove.

Anthony Smith then went out and erased all doubts about his greatness at 205 pounds. Smith did plenty of good work in rounds one and two, then faced adversity in round three as he got taken down by the much bigger Swede. However, Smith made it out of round three, and in round four, he got the fight to the ground. After giving out some punishing elbows, he secured the rear-naked choke, and the biggest win of his career.

Since moving to light heavyweight, Anthony Smith has four wins, all of them being finishes. All four of his opponents were either former champions or title challengers as well. While it’s not known if he will see Jon Jones again, Smith proved he is one of the elite at 205.

Jimi Manuwa Should Retire

It’s crazy to think that less than two years ago, Jimi Manuwa was arguably the number-one contender at 205. Manuwa was coming off of two incredible knockout wins over Ovince Saint Preux and Corey Anderson, and if he had been victorious at UFC 214, he would’ve received a title shot. Instead, Manuwa would get shockingly finished by Volkan Oezdemir in 42 seconds in the main card opener.

Things would only go downhill from there for the Brit. Manuwa would then lose to Jan Blachowicz in March of 2018 in a rematch of a fight that he dominated three years prior, then lost his next two fights via brutal knockout to Thiago Santos at UFC 231 and most recently Alexander Rakic at UFC Stockholm. The Rakic knockout was his third knockout loss in four fights.

Jimi Manuwa has been fighting in the Octagon since 2012, and in his prime was an incredible knockout machine with great boxing and good knockout power. However, that prime appears to have passed, and it may be time for the British fighter to hang up the gloves.

Alexander Gustafsson Had an Amazing Run

Alexander Gustafsson truly grew up in front of all of our eyes. Coming into the UFC at the age of 22, the Swedish fighter immediately made an impact by winning his first bout by knockout at UFC 105. Gustafsson would then face Phil Davis, coming up short by first-round submission. However, after that loss, Gus would not lose for almost four years.

Following the loss to Davis, Gustafsson went on a six-fight winning streak, defeating some excellent names along the way, such as Shogun Rua, Vladimir Matyushenko, and Matt Hamill. The Swede used this momentum to get a title shot against dominant champion Jon Jones. That fight would Jones turned out to be one of the greatest fights in the promotion’s history, nearly dethroning Jones in a fight that many thought Gustafsson should’ve won.

Gustafsson then went 1-1 over his next two, before getting a shot at light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. This fight also went on to be seen as one of the greatest in light heavyweight history, as Gustafsson nearly finished Cormier and nearly pulled out the victory. However, Cormier won the fight via split decision and retained his championship.

Following this fight at UFC 192, Gustafsson had some ups and downs. The main highlight of his last few fights being his incredibly dominant win over Glover Teixeira in Sweden in 2017. Gus used this win to get another title shot against Jones where he ultimately came up short, prior to losing his last fight against Anthony Smith at UFC Stockholm.

Despite never winning a UFC title, Gustafsson was a staple of the division for years, and was a tough fight for anyone. His legacy isn’t coming up short, his legacy is being the troubled kid from Sweden that grew up in front of our eyes over the course of a decade. From debuting at UFC 105 as a fresh-faced 23 year-old, to nearly defeating the untouchable Jon Jones at UFC 165, Gustafsson was fun the entire way.

Thank you, Alex.

German UFC lightweight Nick Hein lost to Frank Camacho Saturday at UFC Stockholm, and the following day announced his retirement.

Overshadowed by UFC Stockholm headliner Alexander Gustafsson retiring, Nick Hein also retired following a loss in Sweden. After losing via TKO in the second round to Frank Camacho, Hein would retire. However he wouldn’t announce until the following day, and he did so on social media. Hein made the announcement on Facebook, saying:

“20 years of Judo. Ten years in the national team. One decade of MMA, 5 years in the UFC. I am ready for the next chapter. Thanks to everyone. I am looking for the future.”

https://www.facebook.com/NickHeinMMA/photos/a.738541516232191/2267379706681690/?type=3&theater

Hein ended his career on an unfortunate note, losing his last three fights to Frank Camacho, Damir Hadžović, and Davi Ramos. However, prior to his current three-fight skid, he was on a three-fight winning streak, last defeating Tae Hyun Bang in Germany in 2016. This would be Bang’s last fight prior to being arrested for fight-fixing for his 2016 bout with Leo Kuntz.

Despite ending his career on a sour note, Hein still finished his career with a 14-5 professional record. He was an accomplished judoka, being the German national champion in 2006 and 2007, however, transitioned to MMA after a failed Olympics bid in 2008. Outside of MMA, Hein is an actor and police officer in Germany. Hein is also an author, releasing the book “Polizei am Limit” in 2016.

The UFC’s latest Fight Night offering, UFC Stockholm, was a night of personal triumph for many, and that reflected in the bonus department.

UFC Stockholm was hit by the last minute loss of its co-main event, but the card still delivered in the action department. And in the finish department. So it’s no surprise to see four Performance of the Night bonuses handed out, rather than a Fight of the Night and two Performance bonuses.

As to who’s a little bit wealthier Sunday morning, there was zero surprise that Aleksander Rakic was among the winners. Rakic absolutely devastated Jimi Manuwa with a crushing first round head kick. ‘Poster Boy’ became posterized, in a highlight reel finish that will be played for years to come. Luckily, Manuwa left the octagon under his own power. Rakic, meanwhile, left it in triumph.

Also no surprise was that main event winner Anthony Smith earned a Performance of the Night bonus. Smith returned to the win column with a fourth round submission of Alexander Gustafsson in a fight that was quite close to that point. However, Smith took his opponent’s back, and ‘The Mauler’ could not shake him off. He flattened the Swede out, and sunk in a rear-naked choke. When the tap came, it silenced the Swedish crowd in an instant.

Gustafsson retired after the fight. Smith is now in limbo, perhaps the best remaining light heavyweight in the division not named Jon Jones.

UFC Stockholm, an event that could have helped sort out the light heavyweight division, ended up only posing more questions.

I’m not sure if I’ve reached the point of lapsed fan yet, but I’m on my way there and the UFC’s latest offering, UFC Stockholm, didn’t help matters.

Sure, there were some bright spots on the main card. And if we were to really nit-pick, we could find enough positives to talk about to cover up the negatives — but there was a feeling of hopelessness in the air after Anthony Smith submitted Alexander Gustafsson, and it had nothing to do with the hometown hero getting beaten into retirement and the crowd going dead silent. That feeling of hopelessness was a glimpse at the future of the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

Before I point out the negatives of the light heavyweight division and the current UFC product, it is important to note the positives of tonight’s show:

FW: Makwan Amirkhani submitted Chris Fishgold via Anaconda Choke.

LHW: Aleksandar Rakic defeated Jimi Manuwa via KO in just 42 seconds.

LHW: Anthony Smith defeated Alexander Gustafsson via RNC.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s have some fun.

Alexander Gustafsson Retires Inside the Octagon

The man who once gave Jon Jones his toughest test inside the cage just ended his career after an uninspiring performance against a comparatively inexperienced 205 newcomer with a broken hand. Gustafsson seemed to lack the killer instinct he had earlier on in his career and even when he found himself on top of a critically injured Anthony Smith after landing a powerful body kick and a swift takedown, he failed to capitalize.

Alex kind of looked like his old self at points in this fight when he would land quick combinations and push the pace; cutting off Anthony Smith and finding the mark a few times before circling out — but those glimpses of signature Gus footwork and stiff punches were just that, glimpses. It never truly came together and at points in the fight. It looked as though Alexander Gustafsson just wanted to get on his bike and collect his paycheck.

Even with a broken hand, Anthony Smith grappled his way to an advantageous position and slowly worked his way towards a rear-naked choke after flattening out the Swede with a body triangle that left Alex belly-down on the canvas.

At the post-fight presser, Gustafsson told the media, “I don’t have it in me anymore.”

That’s a very honest assessment from Gustafsson and many may chalk it up to post-fight emotions and being depressed in the moments after the Smith loss, but make no mistake about it — he definitely doesn’t have what it takes to compete at the top level anymore and make it out with a future.

The retirement talks actually started in 2015 after Gustafsson got knocked silly by a series of shots by Anthony Rumble Johnson and spoiled the party early for the Swedish fans.

I was completely serious about quitting MMA. I don’t care really about the title, it was that it happened in front of my home crowd. My cousins were in place. It just took it too hard. I didn’t have the will to continue. I was really close to quitting.

-Alexander Gustafsson to Expressin in 2015

Gustafsson has since shown the ability to beat fighters the caliber of Jan Blachowicz and an over-the-hump Glover Texeira, but lost to Daniel Cormier after he was gifted a title fight for no reason, looked leagues worse than Jon Jones in their second encounter, and was close to losing a striking battle with Anthony Smith before Smith broke his hand.

The road back to the title is longer and harder than ever after back-to-back losses to fighters who don’t have built-in excuses of already being legendary status. That is, it was okay that Gus lost to Jones, Rumble, and DC, because they’re perceived to be elite and the public is forgiving of those losses. Anthony Smith, though, is a tough loss to bounce back from.

Just How Good is Jon Jones?

Perhaps the meme of Just How Good Is Jon Jones!? holds some serious merit, because things feel helpless right now at 205lbs. The most interesting match-ups are rematches of fights that weren’t interesting in the first place, with the notable exception being Daniel Cormier, and there were already two of those, they were just interesting!

Even with Aleksander Rakic’s quick TKO victory, doesn’t it just seem like it’s a matter of time before he hits the wall that is either Jon Jones or poor booking on the UFC’s part?

Either Rakic, Johnny Walker, and the like thrive long enough to get the little name recognition needed to challenge Jon Jones before they have the rug ripped out from under them or they Yoel/Jacare each other and things end before they even get the chance to be interesting.

It doesn’t even appear like anyone outside of Daniel Cormier or a lucky punch from Johnny Walker can even threaten Jon Jones reign — Jones’ biggest opponent is still himself.

Silencing the Swedish crowd in a heartbeat, Anthony Smith pulled off a fourth-round submission of Alexander Gustafsson at UFC Stockholm on Saturday night.

UFC Stockholm was headlined by Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Smith. The two were looking to rebound from losses to light heavyweight champ, Jon Jones, and course correct their careers once more.

Round 1

Not much action in the first round starting out. Anthony Smith walked forward and planted his feet as Gustafsson had his back to the cage. But with Gustafsson and Smith both looking for counter punches, both fighters started a waiting game. After a few leg kicks from Smith, Alexander’s shin started bleeding quite bad. The round went on with Smith landing more shots and Gustafsson struggling to find his range. Alexander landed a big left hand at the end of the first round that had Smith backpedaling a bit, but not in any crazy danger.

Round 2

Round two began as Gus started to push the pace a bit more. Smith pushed to the cage again and planted his feet again, and Gus just looked at him. Smith started to throw more haymakers at the beginning of the round but Guatafsson’s footwork was a little too much. Anthony Smith landed several good shots, but for the most part, Gustafsson had good enough foot work and head movement to avoid most of the damage. Smith landed a big left hook that did nothing to Gustafsson. In the last minute, Gustafsson turned up the pressure and started to take the fight to Smith.

Round 3

Round three opened with a noticeable uptick in action. Both fighters started throwing heat with it going 50-50. Gus continueed to slip and parry Smith, he looked a step ahead of Lionheart, and a tad bit faster later on in the fight. Both fighters slowed it down in the middle of the round. Opting for more of a chess match, Gus exploded when he deemed appropriate, keeping Smith on the defensive. Gus caught Smith with a straight jab wobbling Smith slightly, but crucially Gus didn’t over-commit. Gus then landed a huge body kick and took Smith down, immediately getting side control. The Swede opened up with ground and pound in the last ten seconds of the round. The fight at this point had now drug into deep waters, where Gustafsson thrives.

Round 4

As round four started, Gustafsson was still light on his feet. Smith meanwhile was coming with some heat at the start of the round with head kicks and one-two combos. Gus shot for a takedown and was denied, tried a hip toss and instead Gustafsson was taken down himself. Smith got control back but was too high on Gus’ back. However, Lionheart was able to take away the base of Gustafsson, and landed some ground and pound before sneaking in a rear naked choke. The choke ultimately finisheed Alexander Gustafsson in the fourth round.

A huge win, earning plenty of kudos, for Anthony Smith, in enemy territory!

Calling Smith a “f*cking beast” and a great guy, Gustafsson took his gloves off in the cage afterward. “The show is over guys,” he said, leaving them in the cage before making his exit.

Light heavyweights Aleksander Rakic and Jimi Manuwa collided in the co-main event of UFC Stockholm, and what a collision it was!

Jimi Manuwa had lost three straight heading into UFC Stockholm. He was desperately in need of a win, even in a division as thin as 205lbs. Aleksander Rakic was on the opposite end of the scale. 11-1 entering the night. On an eleven fight winning streak, and looking to build his name.

He did just that at UFC Stockholm, in under a minute. He also made a poster out of “Poster Boy” Jimi Manuwa.

Manuwa opened the action with a kick to the leg, then took a big swing, showing that power. Rakic was firing leg kicks of his own, and threatening with his right hand. Rakic then fired off a massive head kick on the next exchange, absolutely crushing Jimi Manuwa! The kick connected clean to the side of Manuwa’s head, sending him crashing back to the canvas. Manuwa did not get up for some time. Rakic had a highlight reel finish.

Makwan Amirkhani improved to 5-1 in the UFC with a slick submission of Chris Fishgold at UFC Stockholm on Saturday.

SBG Ireland team member, Makwan Amirkhani returned to the Octagon after a year off on Saturday from the Ericcson Globe Arena, in Stockholm, Sweden. Mr. Findland was hoping to improve on his 4-1 UFC record and gain some momentum to get himself into the featherweight rankings.

Amirkhani’s opponent, Chris Fishgold is a former Cage Warriors lightweight champion, who is 1-1 in the UFC. The Englishman drew the extremely talented Calvin Kattar in his organization debut — losing by first-round TKO. The 26-year-old bounced back in his sophomore bout by taking out Daniel Teymur by second-round submission last February.

They two have been trash talking ever since the bout was announced and even got into a shoving match at the weigh-ins.

Here’s the play by play when the two Europeans finally encountered each other in the Octagon.

Round 1:

Amirkhani starts the fight by running at Fishgold and throwing a flying knee, which the Englishman spun away from. They both exchanged some kicks. The action was briefly stopped when Fishgold was poked in the eye.

When the fight resumed, Fishgold opened up with kicks to the legs, body and even one to the head. One of the kicks tripped Amirkhani to the canvas but Mr. Findland jumped back to his feet.

Fishgold hit his counterpart with an overhand right. He stepped in and Amirkhani perfectly timed a double leg takedown. Fishgold scrambled looking for an ankle. He ate a few punches while rolling around for the submission.

Back in the closed guard, Mr. Finland keeps Fishgold pressed against the cage and landed a right elbow. A scramble ensued and Amirkhani jumped for a guillotine but the round came to an end.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-9 for Amirkhani

Round 2:

Amirkhani grazed Fishgold with a hook but was hit with a hard knee. The southpaw kicked Fishgold’s lead leg. A 1-2 combo landed for Amirkhani but Fishgold backed him up with two big right hands.

Fishgold was marching forward and hit Amirkhani with a right hand. Suddenly the Englishman was floored with a straight kick to the groin. When the fight resumed, Fishgold went back to kicking the legs. He was then hit with a right hand in response.

Amirkhani shot in on a double leg. Fishgold jumped for a guillotine. Mr. Finland fought the hands and popped free, but Fishgold switched to a D’Arce choke. He popped free again, and now Amirkhani was on top. Fishgold tried to scramble but Amirkhani locked in an anaconda choke. Fishgold rolled to his back and tried to spin away from his foe. Amirkhani followed after the submission and eventually Fishgold tapped out.
