UFC Nashville was capped off by a very unexpected upset, so what’s next for the big winners?

Now that Nashville has felt the wrath of the UFC underdog, fans are already asking, “what’s next?” Being filled with plenty of rising stars, and a couple veterans, we’re going to attempt to answer just that. UFC Nashville aftermath coming your way!

Maycee Barber Wins in Flyweight Debut

Maycee Barber is on a mission to become the youngest champion in UFC history. She’s told media multiple times. Barber decided to take a career trajectory towards flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko instead of strawweight champ Rose Namajunas. After getting battered for a round by JJ Aldrich, Barber and her team made the proper adjustments and put Aldrich down in the second.

Aldrich looked fantastic in round one. Her team did their homework and found a hole in Barber’s game plan and did a good job exploiting it. She was on the wrong side of a monster of a shot that put her down.

Next for Maycee Barber: Paige VanZant, Ariane Lipski

Next for JJ Aldrich: Molly McCann, Rachael Ostovich

Luis Peña Shows Promise in Featherweight Debut

Luis Peña, AKA Violent Bob Ross, is already a fan-favorite in his short career. After his tough loss to Mike Trizano at lightweight, Peña decided to make the move down to featherweight. While he missed weight, Peña showed what problems his 6’3” wiry frame can cause.

While Steven Peterson did manage to take Peña down a few times, he was never in any kind of trouble. Peterson took shots and showed what a tough, iron-chinned competitor he is. Both fighters’ stock rose after this fight.

Next for Luis Peña: Kyle Bochniak, Mike Grundy

Next for Steven Peterson: Bryce Mitchell, Austin Arnett

Jussier Formiga and Deiveson Figueiredo Put on a Flyweight Show

Jussier Formiga has made a statement for UFC flyweight champ, Henry Cejudo. He is a legit contender. He deserves a shot. While Cejudo is off chasing a second belt, abandoning a division he set out to save, the division goes on. Formiga dominated Figueiredo all night and took home an easy decision. Formiga deserves a shot. Give it to him, champ.

Next for Jussier Formiga: Henry Cejudo Title Shot, Joseph Benividez

Next for Deiveson Figueiredo: Ray Borg/Kyler Phillips Winner, Dustin Ortiz

Curtis Blaydes is Really Good at Wrestling. Like, REALLY Good.

The biggest one-sided ass-whooping came from the big boys. Curtis Blaydes was calm, cool and collected ahead of his fight with Justin Willis, despite Willis’ continuous taunts. Blaydes systematically destroyed Willis, breaking his spirit and proving there are levels to this game. Blaydes also showed great mental fortitude with the rebound to the loss of Francis Ngannou his last outing.

Not much can be said of Willis. He didn’t have much output in the fight. Willis still has plenty to offer for the UFC, though. With wins over Chase Sherman and Mark Hunt, he still shows promise to put on shows for us fans in the future.

Next for Curtis Blaydes: Junior dos Santos, Stipe Miocic

Next for Justin Willis: Cain Velasquez, Ben Rothwell

Anthony Pettis Solves the Unsolvable Puzzle and Knocks Out Wonderboy

Holy. Crap. Most fans counted out former champ Anthony Pettis. In his welterweight debut in the UFC, he picked a tough task, Stephen Thompson, the karate prodigy. Wonderboy has over 80 career fights (through all martial arts) and has never been knocked out. That’s how improbable Anthony Pettis crazy superman KO of Thompson was.

Earlier in the first round, Thompson looked fantastic, chipping away at Pettis. Bloodying his nose, Pettis had a hard time finding his range. With five seconds to go in the second round, BOOM, down goes Wonderboy. It truly was a jaw-dropping moment and is the reason we don’t just talk about the fights, we actually have them.

Thompson had talked about the effects of weight cuts in the hospital post fight. That is leading people to believe he might make the move up to 185 given he has a win over current champ Robert Whittaker.

Next for Anthony Pettis: Rafael Dos Anjos/Kevin Lee Winner, Justin Gaethje/Edson Barboza Winner

Next for Stephen Thompson: Robbie Lawler, Jorge Masvidal

Following UFC Nashville, four fighters have picked an extra 50K, including strawweight Randa Markos and main event winner Anthony Pettis.

UFC Nashville has come and gone, and it was a successful night for a couple of key players. While a number of promising bouts would go to decision, the finishes, when they came, came in style. Among them, Anthony Pettis in the main event, pulling off a superman punch knockout, and Canada’s Randa Markos earlier in the night, finishing Angela Hill by arm-bar.

Markos, who improved to 9–6–1 on the night, ended the former Invicta FC champ’s night in under a round in Nashville. And earned a Performance of the Night bonus in the process. After getting the fight to the ground, she latched onto an arm and simply would not let go, for all of Hill’s struggles. Forcing the tap, she earned both the win and her second career UFC post-fight bonus. The first came all the way back in 2014 in a Fight of the Night effort in Marko’s debut at the TUF 20 Finale.

Pettis, meanwhile, pulled off a comeback knockout win when he executed the perfect superman punch in the second round of his main event fight against Stephen Thompson. ‘Showtime’ was making his welterweight debut at UFC Nashville, and let it be known that his skill, creativity and power carried over with him to the new weight class. That showing earned him the other Performance award.

Everyone, from Cyborg to Mark Hunt to Ben Askren to <del>Marty</del> Kamaru Usman was watching when Anthony Pettis moved up to welterweight to take on Stephen Thompson.

They were not disappointed. The main event of UFC Nashville explored what might have if you paired up flash versus flash. Speed versus speed. Creativity versus creativity. Stephen Thompson against Anthony Pettis was either going to be a brilliant striking clinic, with two of the best putting on a show on the world’s biggest MMA stage, or they’d cancel each other out. Fans were hoping for the former. They got just that.

The UFC Nashville main event was, in a word, brilliant.

One key factor in the fight, of course, was Pettis moving up in weight. ‘Showtime’ was a former lightweight champion in both WEC and the UFC. ‘Wonderboy’ had spent his UFC tenure at welterweight, and was a tough test for anyone debuting in the weight class. But Pettis turned out to be up to the challenge, after some early setbacks. He was bloodied in the first round. Some high kicks were sneaking through.

Yet Pettis also managed to chop away at the legs of ‘Wonderboy.’ And then, in an instant, he switched things up, fired off a superman punch, and dropped Thompson for the knockout win.

Wow! It was dangerously close to a ‘Showtime Punch’ though replays showed Pettis did not push off the cage. Still, a highlight reel finish that had everyone talking. See how the pros, including Cris Cyborg, Mark Hunt, Kelvin Gastelum, Ben Askren and others, reacted below.

Anthony Pettis made his welterweight debut in the UFC on Saturday, doing so in style against Stephen Thompson — who he put away in the second round with a stunning superman punch.

Closing out UFC Nashville, Stephen Thompson met Anthony Pettis in the main event on Saturday night. Two time 170lb title challenger Thompson entered the night coming off a decision loss to Darren Till back in May when the two met at UFC Fight Night: Thompson vs Till. Pettis also found himself entering the night coming off of a loss by TKO (corner stoppage) when he faced Tony Feguson at UFC 229 last October.

Both flashy strikers, both looking to get back in the win column. In the end, it was Pettis returning to form. And living up to the Showtime name.

Thompson opened with a front kick, but Anthony Pettis kept moving forward. Thompson attacked with a straight left as he circled away from Pettis. Wonderboy Thompson continued to circle while he landed a left-right combination. Pettis fired back with a hard leg kick that landed. Thompson unleashed a body kick that was quickly answered with a leg kick from Pettis. Thomson landed another body kick. Pettis looked for the take down but Thompson slid away. Pettis came back with a cross that hit the mark and Thompson fired back with a punch of his own and followed it with a spin kick. Pettis landed another leg kick and Thompson circled away. A now-bloodied Pettis looked to land a spin kick of his own that Thompson slid out of range from.

Heading into the second, Thompson seemed to have the upper hand. Early in round two, that continued. Thompson opened with a right that Pettis answered with a body kick. Thompson continued to use his movement and Pettis did a good job of sticking with him. Thompson landed a side kick to the body and pushed Pettis back. Pettis responded with a body punch then followed it up with a leg kick. Pettis continued to batter the legs of Thompson with kicks but Thompson remained active and very mobile as he worked his jab. Pettis doubled up on the leg kick and Thompson answered with his jab. Pettis was very much in the fight, but it felt as if Wonderboy could wear him down across five rounds.

Then came the momentum shift. Thompson landed a side kick that pushed Pettis back. But Pettis reversed momentum into a crushing superman punch that crumpled Thompson. Pettis wasted no time and pounced on a downed Thompson, within seconds the ref jumped in to stop the fight. Wonderboy was out. Pettis had won, in stunning fashion. It wasn’t a cage punch or true ‘Showtime Punch’ but a stunning, high light reel punch nonetheless.

After the fight, Pettis told Daniel Cormier in the octagon that he was looking to get a rematch with Rafael dos Anjos at 170lbs. He also indicated he’s not done with lightweight just yet, calling out the winner of next week’s promising Justin Gaethje vs. Edson Barboza.

Curtis Blaydes put on a wrestling clinic as he ground down Justin Willis in the co-main event at UFC Nashville on Saturday.

With things heating up at Friday’s weigh-ins, Curtis Blaydes vs. Justin Willis promised to be a thriller. With Willis making it personal (“Daddy can’t help you,” he remarked, with Blaydes’ father shouting from the back of the room), Blaydes would likely be extra motivated to do some damage — but might it throw him off his game in their UFC Nashville co-main event fight?

Early on, Blaydes looked cool and collected. He stayed outside, firing a leg kick. When an opening presented itself, he closed the distance, driving Willis into the fence then powering him down. Takedown secured. Blaydes began moving towards mount and Willis had to risk giving up his back to avoid that. The only saving grace for Willis was that he trapped his opponent’s leg, but he was still in a horrendous position. Willis made it to one knee, but Blaydes was controlling, adding some knees to the thigh, and then came the suplex that slammed Willis back down.

Willis looked out of his element laying against the cage, and while Blaydes was yet to unleash any of his razor-like elbows, he was in the driver’s seat.

Round two saw a heavy right hand land for Blaydes, and Willis was wobbled. Willis escaped to the cage, but Blaydes caught him and dumped him to the canvas. Willis was once again at risk of being mounted. He’d continue to survive, and do nothing else. You’d be forgiven for struggling to remember if Willis had gotten off any offense throughout the fight. As Willis struggled back up, Blaydes dragged him down again. Willis would finish the round wearing Curtis Blaydes like a blanket.

The third round had Willis needing a finish, but whether he had any means of obtaining that finish was another matter. The pair exchanged early, allowing Willis to finally let his hands go, but nothing landed flush. Willis went high with a kick that was blocked, while Blaydes switched stances. Blaydes was stuffed on a takedown, but muscled his opponent to the fence moments later, hoping to finish the sequence with a single leg takedown. He wouldn’t get it there, but back in the center of the octagon he’d score one more takedown, to underscore the one-sided, grinding, dominant wrestling clinic he was putting on.

After the fight, he told UFC broadcaster (and heavyweight champ, of course) Daniel Cormier that he wanted one of Junior Dos Santos, Derrick Lewis, or Stipe Miocic next.

Curtis Blaydes def. Justin Willis by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-25)

After his original opponent Nasrat Haqparast was pulled from their bout for UFC Nashville, it didn’t take long for John Makdessi to find a new opponent. That would be Jesus Pinedo, who stepped in on short notice. Pinedo entered the night after collecting his first in win the UFC after he won a Unanimous decision over Devin Powell at UFC Fight NIght 140. Makdessi’s last contest also saw him collecting a unanimous decision win over Ross Pearson at UFC on Fox: Alvarez vs Poirier 2.

Makdessi came out moving forward. Pinedo looked to land a head kick that was blocked, he fired off a second and missed the mark. Makdessi continued to move forward and the two exchanged leg kicks. Pinedo tried for another head kick that was blocked by Makdessi. Makdessi closed the distance and two exchanged a flurry of punches. Pinedo found the distance and looked for another head kick that was again blocked. Pinedo missed with another head kick and Makdessi fired back a kick of his own. Makdessi landed a low leg kick that was answered with a pair of kicks from Pinedo that again missed their mark to end the round.

Note the number of times the word “missed” came up there. The crowd was not loving it. Makdessi came out and took center in the second; he started to press the action as he stalked Pinedo around the cage. Pinedo landed a body kick but Makdessi kept moving forward. Makdessi continued to land leg kicks on the lead leg of Pinedo. Makdessi fired off a head kick that was blocked by Pinedo. Pinedo fired off another pair of a kicks that were blocked. Makdessi answered with a high kick of his own. Pinedo returned with a left hook followed by a right. Makdessi continued to chop at the visibly damaged lead leg of Pinedo. They exchanged again with Pinedo landing a head kick to close out the round.

Makdessi opened the third with a leg kick then followed up with a head kick that was blocked. Makdessi continued to land multiple outside leg kicks on Pinedo’s damaged leg. Pinedo started to press forward and looked to land but Makdessi continued with leg kicks that backed him up. Both men exchanged kicks that missed their target. Makdessi moved forward and landed a straight right and then a left hook. Pinedo fired back with a body kick that landed but was caught for a moment. Pinedo moved forward and landed combination, Makdessi answered with a body kick that came at the end of the round. In the end, it was Canada’s Makdessi getting the nod.

Jussier Formiga’s wrestling and takedowns made all the difference in the world as he served up the first loss of Deiveson Figuriredo’s career at UFC Nashville.

Flyweight’s not dead. At least not yet. That was one takeaway from Jussier Formiga vs. Deiveson Figueiredo even being on the UFC Nashville card. The event, hosted on Saturday night at the Bridgestone Arena in the Tennessee city, was topped by Stephen Thompson against Anthony Pettis at welterweight. The promotion’s smallest, and possibly endangered, weight class was represented, however. With a fight that might have title implications, if the division did stick around.

Formiga had won three straight heading in. Figueiredo was a perfect 15-0 in his career. If Henry Cejudo didn’t stray north to bantamweight for the vacant title there, the winner of Formiga vs. Figueiredo seemed like a lock for a stab at the 125lb belt.

Lots of ifs, but still plenty of action in the octagon. Figueiredo stayed on the outside early, while Formiga whiffed with a kick. No surprise, given they were flyweights, but both men were lightning quick when they did engage. Formiga put a little more power in his punches early, but Figueiredo snuck a counter uppercut in, and Jussier Formiga would need to be wary of getting caught. Figueiredo employed some stance switches and a spinning back kick, only to eat a spinning back fist thrown by Formiga.

The pair would head to the ground next, with Formiga getting on top. However Figueiredo escaped to his feet, and the pair grappled along the fence. Formiga looked to get the fight back down, as Figueiredo battled to disengage, with Formiga holding onto a body lock. It was Formiga who would get the upper hand, securing the takedown and quickly moving to mount to finish the first round.

With Formiga securing at least two takedowns and finishing strong, Deiveson Figueiredo would be looking to turn things around in the second. However an early exchange nearly left him open for another takedown, and he’d have to be wary. Formiga fired off a spinning kick, then connected to the leg a couple of times. A single leg led to a scramble, and again, Figueiredo was on his back, after being just a hair’s breadth away from breaking free. Figueiredo was held in this position for a good chunk of time, looking to throw strikes from the bottom. Eventually, the plan worked. Formiga wound up with a nasty gash on his left temple, right on the hairline.

Formiga, however, would finish the round on top. Just a lot wetter, a lot bloodier than he started the frame.

The third saw the pair stay standing through the first minute, Figueiredo throwing in another uppercut, and looking very wary of the takedown. Figueiredo continued to load up on his shots, at times throwing himself off-balance in the process. With just over two minutes to go, Formiga would score a takedown and take control. While he couldn’t keep the fight there, and was bleeding again when they got back to the feet, it prevented Figueiredo from getting back in the fight.

Weight struggles aside, Saturday night at UFC Nashville was another successful outing for Luis Pena, a.k.a. Violent Bob Ross.

Ultimate Fighter alum and owner of perhaps the best nick name in MMA, Luis “Violent Bob Ross” Pena made his return to the cage Saturday at UFC Nashville to face DWTNCS vet Steven Peterson. Originally scheduled at Featherweight, Pena came in 2.5 lbs over the non-title fight limit of 146lbs, costing Pena 30% of his fight purse and making this contest a catchweight. Could Luis Pena save a little face with a good showing in the octagon?

He certainly put in the effort. As did Peterson. Both men came out looking for the leg kick. Peterson pressed in and looked for the takedown. Pena defended but Peterson stuck with it and secured the take down. Pena got to his feet but Peterson had an arm-bar locked in. Pena slammed Peterson to the mat and broke free. Pena took top and looked for position, working inside of Peterson’s guard. Peterson got to his feet but he ate a right from Pena on his way up. Pena pressed him into the fence for a moment then they returned to center. Pena looked to loosen up his striking and started to land on Peterson. Peterson responded by shooting the take down and drove Pena into the fence. The two briefly exchanged on the break as the round ended.

In the second, both men can out fast with a quick exchange, then Pena looked to work his range and striking. Again Peterson shot the take down and took Pena to the mat. Peterson quickly took Pena’s back and looked for the submission. Pena shook him free and went back to landing strikes until once again they clinched against the fence. Peterson landed another take down, but Pena popped back to his feet, only to be taken down again. Peterson took Pena’s back yet again and again Pena made it back to his feet. Peterson continued to work until Pena exploded and created space allowing him to unload on Peterson again. Pena landed some good combinations and Peterson answered with a spinning back elbow. Peterson again pressed Pena back to the fence and looked for the take down against the fence. Pena attempted a Kimura then let it go to better his position. Pena again unloaded on the break as the round ended

Round three saw Peterson come right out and look to take down Pena. Pena spun from the cage to keep loading up on punches and fired off his first kick. Peterson eventually caught up with him and worked for the take down but Pena defended and he ended up on Peterson’s back for a moment. Pena looked to created space and eventually did. Peterson fired a kick then quickly went for the take down again. Pena defended again and again looked for the Kimura. Peterson escaped and took top, working from Pena’s guard. Pena escaped quickly and got on top, and now worked inside Peterson’s own guard. Peterson exploded to his feet but ate a kick to the face for the effort. He quickly went for the take down and Pena worked for defend. As seconds ticked down, Pena looked for a take down of his own to end out the round but had to settle for a couple more strikes.

After finding herself knocked down in the first and on her heels, Maycee Barber regrouped to finish off JJ Aldrich in the second round at UFC Nashville.

Top prospect Maycee Barber made her flyweight debut Saturday at UFC Nashville, after a reportedly torturous effort to make the strawweight division limit. Welcoming Barber to 125lbs was J.J. Aldrich, herself making her UFC debut as a flyweight (Aldrich had competed in the weight class outside the promotion).

Barber, known as ‘The Future’ and very much hoped to be part of the UFC’s future as a potential star, had struggled both in and out of the organization on trips to the scales. That was a thing of the past in Nashville. What was a surprise was some early struggles, but Barber also showed she could overcome adversity.

Aldirch came right out and pressed the action, backing Maycee Barber up in the early going. Barber returned fire, but it was an early victory for Aldirch, who then dropped Barber with a straight punch! Barber was on her back, but Aldrich failed to engage, allowed Barber to recover and get back up. However on the feet, Aldrich continued to push the fight, landing a couple of solid blows that stood Barber up. Barber, for her part, was struggling to land, and continued to eat right hands. A head kick by Barber fanned, with Aldrich out of range, seconds later, JJ landed yet another right hand on her opponent. Barber was knocked off balance and onto her back late in the round, but they would head to a second.

A demoralizing round for Maycee Barber, who would now have to show she could overcome some early adversity. She opened the second firing some kicks to the leg and body, but again, it was Aldrich pressing forward, landing this time with a left. Barber was looking worse for the wear, but initiated a clinch. The second round, as it unfolded, became a different story however. Barber landed a left, rocking Aldrich and backing her up. Barber chased, firing a few more strikes and Aldrich covered up and escaped. Barber stayed on her, landing a number of hooks as Aldrich covered up, and as she doubled over, a knee from Barber connected to seal the deal.

More than just the win, Barber gained some key experience in the bout, showing she could battle back after her early struggles.

Bryce Mitchell came close to finishing, but ultimately went the distance with Bobby Moffett on Saturday night at UFC Nashville.

Two fighters both making their sophomore appearance at UFC Nashville, undefeated Bryce Mitchell stepped into the octagon to face off with Bobby Moffett. Moffett entered the night on a four fight win streak, three of those having come by way of Brabo/D’Arce Choke.

TUF alum Mitchell was probably best known for a horrifying power tool-scrotum injury prior to the fight. That kept him out of action since July. But he certainly put on a showing on Saturday.

Mitchell came out aggressive and took center. He followed with a hard high kick that was blocked by Moffett. Moffett looked to get his timing down down but Mitchell fired a punch down the middle that stunned Moffet and dropped him. Mitchell chased after and looked for the choke. Moffatt worked to escape but Mitchell stuck to him, until Moffett spun on top. Mitchell kept working and locked in a triangle then transitioned to an armbar. Moffett defended well and was able to escape again and get back to his feet. Mitchell looked for another take down attempt but was stuffed. Moffett then landed a nice right but Mitchell walked through it and looked for the take down. The two found themselves against the fence and looked for position as the round came to a close.

Round two opened with Moffett looking to be aggressive and shooting the take down. Mitchell defended well but Moffett kept working and landed shots before he briefly took the back of Mitchell. Mitchell scrambled and got back to his feet; Moffet looked to keep the aggression up and pressed forward as Mitchell fired back. Moffet continued to press, got the body lock and put Mitchell on the mat. Moffet worked from side control and locked in a choke. Mitchell defended the position well and worked his way on top, escaped and took the back of Moffett then looked for another armbar. The two scrambled and Moffett ended back on top as the round ended.

Moffett again came out quick but Mitchell fired back and pushed Moffett back for a moment before he continued to press forward and secure the take down. Moffett worked from top until Mitchell attacked the arm again and looked for the arm-bar from the bottom. Moffett escaped and worked from top for a moment but Mitchell exploded and escaped back to his feet. Moffett continued to press and the two ended up on the mat again with Moffett working from top. Mitchell looked to work from the bottom but Moffett tried for the choke again, and Mitchell exploded up one more and took Moffett’s back. He quickly locked in the choke but Moffett slipped out. Mitchell continued to look for the choke but Moffett was able to get back to his feet just before the round ended. A close one, though Mitchell had some chances in the submission department.
