There was a lot of noise ahead of Raquel Pennington’s UFC 297 title fight, where she claimed the promotion’s vacant bantamweight crown with a dominant victory against Mayra Bueno Silva.

The noise seemed to suggest that Brazil’s Silva was the heir apparent to Amanda Nunes, who Pennington (16-8) had previously lost to in her first title shot. That noise didn’t have much of an impact on Pennington in the end, but a Fight Week illness threw a wrench in the works ahead of the biggest opportunity of her career.

“I’ve been the underdog my entire career. So it’s not anything that truly effects me. I don’t really pay attention to it, everybody’s going to have their own opinion,” Pennington told Cageside Press in a recent exclusive interview. “As an athlete that’s been in this sport a long time, I just feel like there’s more— I had more skill, I had more experience. She hadn’t had the opportunity in the top 10 yet, so there was a lot going into it. Obviously during Fight Week I had to keep reliving everything that’s being said and whatnot, but I don’t care about those things at all.”

“I just went out there and did me, but that was a fun Fight Week,” added “Rocky,” now a few months removed from ascending to the women’s bantamweight throne. “On top of all the noise being said, I ended up sick during Fight Week. So it was another mountain that had to be climbed.”

Despite the five round fight seemingly favoring her thanks to the experience gap with Silva, Pennington later admitted to being concerned about her lung power. Ultimately, she went five full rounds, winning a unanimous decision that was pretty much one-sided, though the bout was criticized somewhat heavily for it’s lack of action— something that illness might help put into context.

“With this fight, I was nervous, because like I said I got sick during Fight Week, I’ve never felt like that going into a fight. My team, we had to get my sports psychologist and everything, and kind of really just gather me. It was like ‘alright, you need to understand that this opportunity probably won’t come around again.’ So I had to really dig deep in that one. And that’s the only time for me that I was actually concerned that I was going to be able to breathe for five rounds.”

While names like Kayla Harrison, arriving in the UFC next month, and Amanda Nunes, should she return from retirement, are on the horizon, Pennington has a ready-made rivalry with Julianna Pena that is likely up next. It’s a fight that makes a lot of sense to “Rocky” because of the pair’s shared history on The Ultimate Fighter 18 over a decade ago.

“I think there’s just a storyline behind it, so it will make for a good fight. Just being on the Ultimate Fighter together,” stated Pennington. “It’s not necessarily personal for me, Julianna’s just a person on this planet that gets under my skin.” That stems from living together on TUF, where Pena was being bulled – which actually elicited sympathy from Pennington, who in turn tried to befriend her roommate on the show. “I honestly felt bad for her, so it was just ‘alight, we’re roommates, we’re actually teammates,’ so I tried to befriend her and just be a person to her. And I learned her personality pretty quick.”

“Sometimes you just have those people on this planet that your personalities don’t go together. You stay to your side, I’ll stay to mine type of thing,” Pennington said of the situation. “But just throughout the years, that’s a fight that I’ve always wanted to happen. I figured it would have happened a lot sooner, it hasn’t. And then now of course you have her out there making all this noise and creating all this raucous and saying things. Of course it’s a fight that I’m definitely looking forward to.”

Anaheim, CA — They can’t all be winners, and UFC 297, in the eyes of many, was not. Apparently, that even includes UFC CEO Dana White.

During the UFC 298 post-fight press conference with White, the UFC exec was asked about the heavily criticized performance of Ian Garry, who won something of a listless decision against Geoff Neal on the main card in Anaheim.

Rather hilariously, Garry happened to be in the room when the reporter behind the question let it loose, leading White to pivot to the welterweight.

“Hey Ian, this guy thought your fight sucked tonight,” exclaimed White. “He wants to know my opinion on your fight sucking tonight.”

To be fair, far more than the media were critical of Garry’s performance; Garry himself took the question in stride. But Dana White, in defending the budding Irish star, also addressed the somewhat lackluster Toronto event last month.

Asked about the fan reaction to Ian Garry in Anaheim, White replied by saying that “Well, listen, the crowd came in and paid and broke the all-time California record, the gate record and things like that. But it was a great card, and to say that his fight wasn’t a good fight, it might not have been a great fight compared to the rest of the night, with the card.” But, White added, “when you talk about bad cards, Toronto was a bad card. Toronto, I owe you another one. We’ll try to do better next time.”

UFC 297 took place in Toronto on January 20, 2024 and was the promotion’s first visit to Canada’s most populous city since 2018. Two title fights topped the event, with Dricus Du Plessis dethroning Sean Strickland in the headliner, and Raquel Pennington winning the vacant women’s bantamweight title in the co-main event.

Pennington vs. Mayra Bueno Silva in particular received heavy criticism for its plodding pace, however, while the entire card was a bad night for Canada: while Canadian women Gillian Robertson and Jasmine Jasudavicius shined, the men went 0-6. Seven of twelve fights went the distance, and of the five finishes, three came on the early prelims — meaning they were seen by just a fraction of the fanbase.

The UFC has yet to announce another Canadian date; UFC 297 in Toronto marked the promotion’s second trip north of the border since the coronavirus pandemic waned. UFC 289 was held in Vancouver last June, though prior to COVID-19, the UFC was making three trips to Canada annually.

Garrett Armfield had a big showing at UFC 297 in Toronto just a few weeks ago, picking up a unanimous decision win over Ultimate Fighter double-champ Brand Katona.

Bantamweight Armfield (10-3) has now won two straight fights, while continuing to work part time as a bartender.

“Yes I’m a bartender actually. It keeps me honest, it keeps me humble, so I like to do it,” Armfield told Cageside Press in an exclusive interview. “I bartend like one day a week or so. So it’s just like one thing. It’s nice to have a little extra side cash. It’s like my fun money, I guess I would call it. Like if I want to go buy something, I’ll go work a couple shifts and I’ll use that money.”

A nice little cushion to be sure, but Armfield is starting to make some progress in the UFC. He’s now won back-to-back fights, and is open to fighting around the world. Aside from just enjoying travel — he’d love to take his girlfriend to Rome — “It’s just an opportunity for me to hit a new market, too,” Armfield noted. “So I kind of like going around being exposed to fans that I normally wouldn’t hit.”

Having caught a replay of his fight with Katona, Garrett Armfield believes he did enough to secure the decision.

“I have watched it. I think I did very well. When they read the decision, it does seem like I’m surprised, because I didn’t really know how to score the fight. But going back and watching, I definitely was the more effective fighter, and I do believe I did win. And I did enough to get the judges, and I think I did enough to get the unanimous [decision] as well. I definitely beat him the first and second round. Third round he won on control time but if you go back and look, I was the one that was advancing and pressuring and doing strikes whenever it wasn’t grappling.”

“I’m extremely happy with my performance, and I think I definitely rose to the occasion,” Armfield added. He sees the win, in fact, as an “even bigger guarantee that this is exactly what I’m meant to do with my life.”

Dana White has addressed some of the controversy set off by Sean Strickland in Toronto earlier this month at UFC 297.

Strickland, now the UFC’s former middleweight champion following a split decision loss to Dricus Du Plessis at the January 20 card, was a polarizing figure while in Canada, launching into a hate-filled tirade against homosexuals while questioning MMA Fighting’s Alex K. Lee as to whether he’d accept having a gay son.

Alongside that, Strickland attempted to win over fans by clumsily dabbling in Canadian socio-political issues including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s handling of a COVID-19 lockdown protest. Strickland also suggested he would bring “free speech” to Canada (freedom of expression is enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but apparently, no one bothered to tell Strickland that).

Following what amounted to a PR disaster for the promotion which included a public press conference with fans chanting “say the N-word” that was ultimately cut short after one unruly spectator rushed the stage, UFC CEO Dana White defended Strickland’s right to say what he wants, while noting that he doesn’t agree with the majority of what Sean Strickland says.

“We’re up in Canada. Sean Strickland said a lot of things. I don’t agree with 95 percent of what this guy says, but it’s his right to say it,” Dana White stated, speaking on The TRUTH Podcast. “And if you don’t like it, tune in on Saturday night, he’s gonna get punched in the face. If you don’t like him, you get to see him get punched in the face, so there you go. Don’t get too upset and don’t take it too serious.”

White also compared the situation to that of Tyron Woodley during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, ahead of his fight with Colby Covington.

“We had a guy early on when the COVID thing started, Tyron Woodley. He came out in Black Lives Matter everything. I think he had Black Lives Matter socks on, covered head to toe in Black Lives Matter,” White said. “At the press conference leading up to his fight, they would ask him a question and he would say, ‘Black Lives Matter.’ They’d ask him another one, [he answered] ‘Black Lives Matter.’ I didn’t say sh*t to him, knock yourself out.”

While Canada does recognize Freedom of Expression as a right granted to all citizens, the country has stricter hate crimes/hate speech laws that its southern neighbor — though Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Neil Lumsden told Cageside Press during Fight Week that he was prepared to let the UFC deal with Strickland’s comments internally.

In the wake of UFC 297, Jon Anik was hit with a deluge of toxic fans, and things got bad enough that the UFC play-by-play man is now openly questioning his future in the sport.

Anik, one of the best to ever do it, is the UFC’s go-to guy on major events, and has also been incredibly gracious with both media and fans. That, it seems, has left the door open to the sort of trollish behavior seen following UFC 297 in Toronto, where Sean Strickland lost his middleweight title to Dricus Du Plessis by split decision.

A close fight, certainly, but not a robbery, with the fight coming down to the third round — a round Strickland’s own coach, Xtreme Couture’s Eric Nicksick, told his fighter he didn’t like.

That didn’t stop “fans” from letting Anik have it when he stated he agreed with the scoring. Which in turn has led Anik to ponder whether sticking around MMA is worth it.

“I am growing tired of this MMA space a little bit and just the morass of negativity when there is a close fight,” Anik said on his Anik & Florian podcast, which he hosts alongside multi-time UFC title challenger Kenny Florian. “Because even if you and I both thought Dricus Du Plessis won the fight, we try to present that information respectfully. When I go onto X [Twitter] or I go to our YouTube comments, it just seems like a lot of these fans are just in attack mode. I don’t know if these fans are casual fans or not, but I appreciate the passion. But I’m getting to the point at 45 years of age where I don’t know how much time I have left in this MMA space because if I go do pro football, I’m not going to necessarily be dealing with this lowest common denominator all the time. I don’t know, man.”

“I just feel like there’s a lot of malice and disrespect from the fanbase,” added Anik. “We can disagree. Don’t take it from me. Demetrious Johnson and Kenny Florian thought DDP won the fight. I don’t know. I’ve just been very off-put with the negativity that has permeated my feed since Saturday night. I’m just not sure how much longer I have in this space.”

It would be a huge loss for the UFC, and for the spot, for Jon Anik to walk, something that will likely only embolden trolls whose only need is for attention, whether it be positive or negative. A consummate professional, Anik has been the most reliable voice on UFC broadcasts for years now. As for the trolls, the sport is better off without them, but getting rid of them is no easy feat.

After a successful trip to Canada that saw him claim middleweight gold against Sean Strickland at UFC 297, newly crowned UFC champ Dricus Du Plessis has received a hero’s welcome back home in South Africa.

“Stillknocks,” a former KSW welterweight champ and double champ in South African promotion EFC (welterweight and middleweight) is the first-ever UFC champ from the country, and remains unbeaten in the promotion. He arrived in the UFC in 2020 at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, and quickly amassed a strong resume with wins over Derek Brunson, Darren Till, Robert Whittaker, and now Strickland.

The throngs of fans awaiting Du Plessis’ return, chanting DDP, was reminiscent of the hero’s welcome then-light heavyweight champ Jiri Prochazka received in the Czech Republic when he brought the UFC title home.

Dricus Du Plessis made a brief statement to South African media upon his arrival on Thursday, thanking fans for their support. “Thank you to all the people. This moment wouldn’t be so special without all the people being here. This makes it all worth it.”

Next steps for Du Plessis could be interesting, as he has a ready-made, big-money rivalry with Israel Adesanya. The UFC had been looking to book the pair last fall, but with DDP injured, Strickland took the fight instead, and pulled off the Upset of the Year. Adesanya then announced he was taking time off from fighting, though a chance to get in the cage with Dricus Du Plessis could potentially lure him back.

If not, the door may open for a challenger like Jared Cannonier, looking for his second shot at gold.

And for good reason.

During Saturday’s (more accurately Sunday morning’s) UFC 297 post-fight press conference, White revealed that the card at the ScotiaBank Arena was the “highest grossing event in arena history, highest-grossing arena event in Canada.” A gate of over $8 million and over 18,000 fans in attendance helped facilitate those records.

That bodes well for future Canadian dates, something White was asked about later in the press conference.

“Canada has been very good to us for many, many years. I love this place, and yes. The answer is yes,” White said about a return to Canada in 2024. “We’ll be coming up here from Toronto to Vancouver. We’re going to cover the entire country and get back to business as usual, as it was back in the day with Canadian fights.”

Business as usual prior to the COVID-19 pandemic was three events per year in Canada, usually a Pay-Per-View card and a pair of Fight Nights. Since the pandemic has waned, the UFC made its return to Canada in 2023, hosting UFC 289 in Vancouver. The Toronto card has been the second event back; rumors of a Halifax date swirled last fall but never materialized.

Asked about another stop in Vancouver, which also hosted a date in 2019, Dana White said that “I could see us going all over the country, not just Vancouver and Toronto.”

Gordon (14-8) came out strong in the opening round of the card-opening fight, but soon found himself fending off submission attempts from fellow veteran Jimmy Flick. Gordon eventually tapped in the second round, ending his night early and starting a disastrous run for the Canadian men, who went 0-7 on the card (England’s Arnold Allen, who trains with Canada’s TriStar Gym, also suffered defeat, making it 0-8 in a sense).

Following the fight, Gordon could be seen taking off his gloves, though he was not afforded any mic time to make an announcement. However, on his Instagram, Gordon posted a simple message in the wake of the loss: Retired.

A former TKO flyweight champion, Malcolm Gordon never found the same success in the UFC, posting a 2-5 record across his seven fights dating back to July of 2020. He had missed weight for his last two fights including the Flick bout, making his exit from the promotion almost certain after a third consecutive loss.

Gordon started his career on a much more positive note, however. He won multiple regional titles and ran up a 12-3 record across his first 15 fights in a career dating back to 2012. Under the UFC banner, he holds a victory over Francisco Figueiredo, brother of former UFC flyweight champ Deiveson Figueiredo.

It was a close, hard-fought fight in which both men bled, but following the UFC 297 main event, Dricus Du Plessis is now your middleweight champion. What’s next for the South African and other successful fighters on the Toronto card? Read on!

Dricus du Plessis

After a close, hard-fought decision, Dricus du Plessis left the arena with the undisputed UFC middleweight title on Saturday at UFC 297. One judge’s dissent means there is potential for a rematch, especially because the title fight won ‘Fight of the Night,’ largely for it’s particularly exciting fifth round. Either way, the South African is still undefeated in the promotion and gets to go home with a belt over his shoulder to parade in front of thousands as the first UFC champ from his home country.

The next fight for Dricus may come sooner than people expect. Despite his battered face after a war with Sean Strickland, du Plessis stated his desire to fight at UFC 300 in three months’ time. Potential challengers are few, mainly just Israel Adesanya and Jared Cannonier.

Adesanya and du Plessis faced off once before, before Israel lost his title, which produced a heated exchange that dipped into racial tensions centered around who is a “real African.” Dricus’ claim that he is the first African champ because he still trains and lived on the continent has caused fierce debate among fans, and gives the potential fight extra drama, especially if it headlines the first UFC event in Africa, as Dana White alluded to the possibility of.

Israel has already said he may take quite some time off, and hinted at moving up to fight his rival Alex Pereira. If that’s the case, Jared Cannonier is the obviously deserving contender. After losing to Adesanya in the past, he reeled off a win over now-champ Sean Strickland and a brutal beatdown of top contender Marvin Vettori, which showed Jared’s evolution as a fighter. He may just be the best middleweight in the division now, and deserves a chance to prove it.

du Plessis’ Next Fight: Jared Cannonier

Raquel Pennington

Pennington’s long road to a UFC title is extremely heart-warming. It’s always a good feeling to see perseverance, grit, and determination pay off for a fighter. Now, as the sixth woman to be UFC bantamweight champion, her next contender is already penciled in.
Juliana Pena secured one of the greatest upsets in MMA history in 2021 when she dethroned GWOAT Amanda Nunes. She lost in the rematch and has not fought since, but in a division which is now lacking high-profile talent, Pena’s name stands out. Dana White and Raquel Pennington have both already stated she will be the next challenger.

Pennington’s Next Fight: Juliana Pena

Neil Magny

Magny showed why he has the most wins in UFC welterweight history and added to that tally by coming back from losing the entire fight to finish Mike Malott in enemy territory in the final minute of the final round. Even at thirty-six years of age he proved he still has something left in the tank. Yet the way he lost the fight up to that point is concerning, and if Malott had a better gas tank or had not gone for a guillotine, Magny would likely have lost.

Neil still should be forced to fight another fringe-ranked contender in his next fight, as his recent results have been subpar, losing dominantly in every recent fight against a fellow top-15 welterweight. He would be a perfect opponent for someone like Nicolas Dalby or Michael Morales. Since he just beat one talented young prospect, Magny should not have to fight another. Dalby is closer to his age but has earned a shot at the rankings through his results, especially the recent victories over the undefeated Gabriel Bonfim and veteran Muslim Salikhov, who was recently top-15 himself.

Magny’s Next Fight: Nicolas Dalby

Chris Curtis

Chris Curtis let another close fight almost slip through his hands at UFC 297, but in the end did just enough to edge out the split decision over Marc-Andre Barriault in Canada on Saturday. Chris has proven he is down to fight anyone, and that will come in handy since the UFC middleweight division is almost completely booked at present. If he wants to wait then he can fight the winner or loser of one of those fights.

However, if Chris Curtis wants to stay active there is only one man available: Ikram Aliskerov. Aliskerov is one of the major dark horses in the UFC at present and was booked to fight top-15 middleweight Anthony Hernandez recently, but withdrew. His wrestling and striking are both to be feared, and Curtis has not faced a Dagestani wrestler in MMA since 2019, so it would be interesting to see what he learned from the loss to Magomed Magomedkerimov back then. He has been known for his excellent takedown defense in the UFC, would that hold up against the boogeyman from Dagestan?

Curtis’ Next Fight: Ikram Aliskerov

Movsar Evloev

Movsar Evloev vs Arnold Allen at UFC 297 was the hardest test for Evloev thus far in his career, but in the end he earned the decision despite a dicey final round. At 18-0 he has one of the best records in MMA at present, but is held back by his complete lack of finishes in the UFC. Beating fourth-ranked Arnold Allen will have him in the top five at featherweight, but will it be enough for a title shot?

Evloev vs Emmett would make sense after Emmett’s highlight reel knockout of Bryce Mitchell last month, but Alex Volkanovski may want to stay active, something he is insistent on, and ask for the fight with Evloev. If Ilia Topuria dethrones Alex then he may also want to do so, as he has some bad blood with Evloev from when they were previously booked to fight. Fans may not get excited for it, but Movsar is clearly one of the best featherweights in the world, and an eight-fight winning streak is usually enough to earn a title shot.

Evloev’s Next Fight: Winner of Volkanovski/Topuria

What’s next for the budding, controversial star and the other main card combatants who fell short this past weekend? Let’s take a look.

Sean Strickland

Sean Strickland is a star. And, as his own best friend Chris Curtis put it, Strickland is “an idiot.” For all the efforts he’s made to shun his racist past, Strickland has courted more controversy than anyone this side of Colby Covington, and “Chaos” can at least claim to be playing a character. Strickland isn’t, which makes his rhetoric concerning, especially when he’s calling anyone supporting gay people an “infection” and threatening to outright stab and murder his would-be opponent.

That Dana White wasn’t interested in telling Strickland to tone things down tells you all you need to know about where the promotion stands on this. The UFC CEO had the good sense to limit the pre-fight press conference in Toronto to a mere blip after a Strickland fan rushed the stage, while others chanted “say the N word,” attempting the be just the edgiest little edgelords. But none of it is particularly amusing, and if things do some day get out of hand and someone gets seriously hurt, the promotion need look no further than its own leadership for where to place the blame.

The question now becomes, what do you do with Sean Strickland, who in basically two fights went from “that weird sociopath guy” to one of the promotion’s biggest draws? Dana White claimed Saturday that he could fight anywhere, including the Apex. That might help curtail some of the stupidity that graced the Toronto card, but Strickland the fighter should be fighting in front of fans. He’s a draw, and no matter what the UFC promotional machine might have you believe, those are always in short supply given the number of events churned out each year.

So – no, there shall be no Apex show for Sean Strickland. Without the title, he either headlines a Fight Night, or serves as a co-main event. As a one-and-done champ, there’s no call for an immediate rematch, and the headbutt story doesn’t have legs. You could pair him up with the winner of Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa, but neither of them tend to fight often, which might be a lot of down time for Strickland, who fought six times in the past two years and got one in early to start 2024. If Jared Cannonier was healthy (he injured his MCL) or due back soon, a rematch with “The Killa Gorilla” could be interesting, as their first fight was close.

Roman Dolidze fights Nassourdine Imavov in just under two week’s time however. Strickland has a win over Imavov, but a fight with Dolidze works whether he wins or loses, given Strickland is an ex-champ coming off a loss, and Dolidze is ranked in the top 10.

Strickland’s next fight: Roman Dolidize

Mayra Bueno Silva

Pennington vs. Silva wasn’t Esparza vs. Namajunas 2 bad, but it wasn’t great, and sucked the wind out of the ACC (sorry, ScotiaBank Arena) on Saturday. Mayra Bueno Silva not seeming prepared to go a full five rounds didn’t help that. It’s now back of the line for “Sheetara” who had built up a nice little run.

Karol Rosa is coming off a December loss in a Fight of the Night winning effort against Irene Aldana. That fight made the short list for Fight of the Year. Rewarding Rosa with a recent title challenger while giving Silva a high-profile match-up is just smart matchmaking.

Silva’s next fight: Karol Rosa

Mike Malott

Mike Malott was about a minute away from another UFC win until he gassed out, had the tables turned and was put away by Neil Magny. It was a sudden end to a life-long dream, turned into a nightmare (one shared by all of the Canadian men at UFC 297, though the women saved the day).

Malott is still young in his career and Neil Magny has the most wins in UFC welterweight history. “Proper” Mike will learn a proper lesson from the experience and no doubt come back stronger. He won’t get a ranked opponent again so soon, but a guy like Gabriel Green could work. Green has been a litmus test for fellow rising stars Ian Garry and Bryan Battle, the latter a TUF champ. Magny was too much too soon, let’s see how Malott does against Green.

Malott’s next fight: Gabe Green

Marc-Andre Barriault

The Canadian men just couldn’t catch a break at UFC 297, and that was the case for the “Power Bar” a.k.a. MAB, a.k.a. Marc-Andre Barriault. The Quebec middleweight and former TKO double-champ lost a split decision to Chris Curtis, and missed out on his ticket to the top 15.

Next up: Abus Magomedov. Abus came into the UFC on a lot of hype, picked up a win, then was pushed into a fight with Sean Strickland where he floundered. A decision loss to Caio Borralho followed. It’s sink or swim time for Magomedov, he’s not booked, and if MAB wins, he’s back hunting for a ranking.

Bariault’s next fight: Abus Magomedov

Arnold Allen

Arnold Allen has now lost two straight, which is an almighty shame for a fighter’s fighter who carried himself like a professional at all times. Problem is, Movsar Evloev is now 18-0 and was simply a tough fight to bounce back from a loss to Max Holloway on at UFC 297.

Allen still has plenty of road ahead but his #4 ranking may already be gone by the time you read this. He’ll need to fight down the ladder a bit, and the always reliable Alex Caceres could work. He’s still hanging on in the top 15, coming off a loss to Giga Chikadze.
