UFC light heavyweight Smilin’ Sam Alvey gave us his thoughts on last weekend’s UFC 238, including his take on the tough head kick knockout suffered by Henry Cejudo.

Smilin’ Sam Alvey has been in the fight game a good long while now. The UFC light heavyweight (and former middleweight) made his debut in 2014, and that’s discounting an appearance on The Ultimate Fighter in 2012.

The Team Quest member is as outspoken a fighter as you’ll find, and coming out of UFC 238, that was no exception. Cageside Press caught up with Alvey after the fights, to get his thoughts on the event. Turns out, Alvey is down with the King of Cringe, Henry Cejudo.

“Cringeworthy is the perfect word for it, because it is cringeworthy, and I love it,” Alvey said of the new champ champ. “I can’t wait to see what dumb thing he pulls out of his hat next.”

While some might be laughing at him, “I think I’d be with him,” said Alvey. “He has to know that it’s cringeworthy, that it is. It’s nothing that clever, it’s [that] he’s willing to do it.”

It’s not just the act, however, Alvey pointed out. “Then he goes out and beats everyone. He beats Mighty Mouse, the greatest fighter the UFC’s ever had. He beats anyone and everyone they put in front of him.”

The other title fight at UFC 238, of course, was Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jessica Eye for the women’s flyweight title. Shevchenko ended Eye’s night early with a crushing head kick that laid Eye out flat. “It was a great kick, it was a great setup, it was a great knockout,” Alvey observed. “And about a second after I saw her hit the ground, I was like ‘ooh I didn’t like seeing that.'”

Call him old fashioned, maybe, but “for me, there was a difference, because it’s a girl as opposed to a guy. A guy — like when Overeem got knocked out, I liked the knock out, it was the greatest knockout. Saw this one, and it bothered me that they kept showing it so much.”

Luckily, he noted, “the champ [Shevchenko] did it well, the champ did not dive in for an extra shot, the champ did the best she could to get out of the way.” In fact, he Alvey suggested, “she might be the only champ in the game that would not have gone in for another punch. Not to be mean, but to make sure the fight was finished.”

“But it did bother me, watching her get knocked out.” What equally troublesome were the comments that came online afterward. “I couldn’t imagine making fun of her, making fun of her for getting kicked in the face like that. Making fun of anyone for getting kicked in the face like that.”

For more from Sam, and teammate Ricky Furar, watch the full interview (part one above, part two below).

UFC 238 delivered to fans what they were dying for since UFC 236: another banger of a card. With so many great fights, we were blessed by the finish gods. Now it’s time to see what’s next for some of the fighters on the card.

Petr Yan Notches Yet ANOTHER Statement Win

Petr Yan might just be the future of the bantamweight division. He took on Jimmie Rivera and dominated the entire fight. Yan’s cardio dictated the pace the entire fight. He pushed the pace and wore down Rivera quickly. Yan’s hands and scrambles proved he can compete with the elite.

Jimmie Rivera looked good at UFC 238. He showed improvement after some people said he was done after his loss to Aljamain Sterling. He just took on too much of a challenge with Yan, who is in the Matrix compared to the rest of the division. Rivera still has fight left in him.

Next Opponent for Petr Yan: Cody Garbrandt, John Lineker

Next Opponent for Jimmie Rivera: Pedro Munhoz, Cory Sandhagen

Tony Ferguson Breaks Another Opponent’s Body

Tony Ferguson is a freak of nature. He has now won 12 consecutive fights in the most stacked division in the UFC. Ferguson dispatched Cowboy Cerrone in the second round, the same way he defeated Anthony Pettis in his last fight; he broke their body. Tony’s cardio remained strong as Cowboy faded and Tony dominated the second round.

Cowboy Cerrone didn’t look bad. Tony was just on another level than him. Sadly, Dad Cerrone’s streak has come to an end. The fan favorite still has fight left in him. He will go on to fight 1628 more times this year.

Next Opponent for Tony Ferguson: Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Dustin Poirier Winner

Next Opponent for Cowboy Cerrone: Justin Gaethje, Conor McGregor

Valentina Shevchenko, Flyweight Queen

Valentina Shevchenko looked invincible against Jessica Eye. And with the beautiful head kick KO, Valentina exited the cage with almost no damage. Not much can be said of Shevchenko’s UFC 238 performance aside from flawless. She was never in any real danger and didn’t take any damage.

Unfortunately for Jessica Eye, she was a victim to circumstances in a new division that hasn’t fleshed out who the contenders are yet. With three straight wins going into the fight, she was in a good spot. But, in hindsight, she needed a couple more fights before taking on the champ.

Next Opponent for Valentina Shevchenko: Liz Carmouche vs. Roxanne Modafferi Winner, Katlyn Chookagian

Next Opponent for Jessica Eye: Joanne Calderwood, Roxanne Modafferi vs. Liz Carmouche Loser

Cejudo Joins Elite And Calls Out Three Non-Contenders

Henry Cejudo made history at UFC 238. He won a second belt. Pair that with his Olympic gold medal and he has his name thrown into the GOAT conversation. In the first round, Cejudo looked over his head with Moraes. But once his cardio outpaced Marlon Moraes, he took over in rounds two and three. In the post-fight interview, he called out Dominick Cruz, Cody Garbrandt, and Urijah Faber, three fighters lightyears from a title shot.

Moraes looked good for a round. He was faster than the Olympian. But he faded quickly. Ultimately, he was TKOed by Cejudo and missed his first shot at UFC gold. Not all is lost in Moraes’ camp. A little better pacing and we have ourselves a great fight.

Next Opponent for Henry Cejudo: Jussier Formiga vs. Joseph Benavidez Winner, Aljamain Sterling

Next Opponent for Marlon Moraes: Cody Garbrandt, Pedro Munhoz

UFC 238 took place in Chicago this past Saturday, and there’s a lot to talk about coming out of the card.

UFC 238 was one of the most stacked cards of the year, with a slew of ranked fighters along with the two title fights at the top of the bill. In the main event, we saw Henry Cejudo make history as he defeated Marlon Moraes for the vacant UFC bantamweight title. In the co-main, we saw Valentina Shevchenko defeat Jessica Eye with one of the best knockouts of the year, as she defended her flyweight title.

Here are some takeaways from that card last Saturday.

Henry Cejudo is quickly making his case for the greatest of all time.

Just a little over two years ago, Henry Cejudo was coming off of two losses in a row and was beginning to just look like another victim of Demetrious Johnson’s success. Cejudo first got his shot at DJ’s crown at UFC 197 after winning his first four bouts in the Octagon. Cejudo would go on to get dominated, quickly losing via TKO in the first round. He then followed this up with a loss to Joseph Benavidez that December.

Cejudo then took nine months off to hone his skills, and improve. He returned at UFC 215 against Wilson Reis, and looked like a brand new fighter. Showcasing his new striking skills, he dominated the former title challenger on the feet, and finished him in the second round. Cejudo then followed up his win over Reis with a suffocating performance against the rising Sergio Pettis. This win over Pettis secured him a second shot at long-reigning champion Demetrious Johnson.

Henry Cejudo would then pull off one of the greatest upsets in MMA history, defeating Johnson via split decision in a highly entertaining bout. Cejudo’s win ended Johnson’s record title defense streak, and gave him his first loss in seven years. Cejudo, in his post-fight interview, would call out that night’s headliner and bantamweight champion, TJ Dillashaw. A call out that Dillashaw would answer. The fight for Cejudo’s flyweight championship was then set for the first-ever ESPN card in 2019.

Cejudo made quick work of the bantamweight champion, finishing him in 32 seconds. Following the fight, Dillashaw tested positive for EPO, and was stripped of his bantamweight title. Cejudo was then scheduled for a championship bout against Marlon Moraes at UFC 238, and after showcasing his championship heart early, Cejudo finished the number-one contender in the third round, to secure his second championship.

Henry Cejudo’s turnaround has been nothing short of amazing, while the talent has always been there, we’re now seeing it all on full display. Cejudo’s current winning streak has some of the greatest names of the sport, and as Cejudo is defeating former champions and capturing belts, he’s quickly cementing his place as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

And he’s got a gold medal.

Tony Ferguson needs to fight for the lightweight title after Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Dustin Poirer.

Imagine living in a world where a fighter could be on a 12-fight winning streak within the UFC, and there was still debate on if he deserves a title shot next or not. Well, sadly, you don’t have to imagine. After Tony Ferguson’s TKO win over the surging Donald Cerrone at UFC 238, there was talk of a rematch due to controversy with the stoppage. Cerrone was hit with a strike after the bell, moments before the fight was stopped. It’s worth noting that this strike didn’t hit Cerrone on his eye, which is the reason the fight was stopped.

Tony Ferguson is sadly the victim of a developing sport where the UFC can’t figure out if they want to be more entertainment than sport, or the other way around. Conor McGregor is being discussed for the winner of the lightweight championship bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirer in a couple of months. While the bout makes sense through the idea of McGregor having history with both of them, it doesn’t make sense when you realize you have an active lightweight who is currently on a 12-fight winning streak in the UFC’s most stacked division.

Conor McGregor is a giant star, yes, but if this is truly a “sport”, Tony Ferguson needs the next crack before McGregor. Tony Ferguson’s resume reads like an all-time lightweight rankings list, Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Rafael dos Anjos, Josh Thomson, and Kevin Lee, are just some of the excellent names that Tony Ferguson has beaten during his 12-fight winning streak. The last time Tony Ferguson lost in the UFC, women weren’t even in the UFC.

But sure, the guy who hasn’t won since 2016 deserves a title shot over him.

Valentina Shevchenko is going to dominate for a while.

Valentina Shevchenko faced off against number-one flyweight contender Jessica Eye at UFC 238, and what ensued was complete and utter domination from the champion. After dominating Eye in the opening frame, she went and finished the fight with one of the most brutal knockouts of the year, a Mirko Cro Cop-esque head kick knockout.

It’s worth noting that dominating is the only thing Shevchenko has done since going down to flyweight. In her three fights since moving down to 125, Shevchenko has only lost a single round. That being in her championship winning effort against Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 231. It’s also incredibly hard to look at the flyweight top-15 and see anyone posing any threat to Shevchenko. It’s worth noting that Liz Carmouche defeated Shevchenko nine years ago, but Shevchenko has noticeably improved leaps and bounds since then.

While her reign is just now beginning, it’s hard to not see Shevchenko holding that belt for a long time. It is a new division, so it’s going to take some time for talent to get there. Women’s strawweight wasn’t exactly a talent-rich division when it opened, it took time for talent to get there. The same will likely happen for women’s flyweight as well.

But in the mean-time, expect Valentina Shevchenko to run through the division.

Good news for flyweight fans, as UFC President Dana White says the division is staying put after Henry Cejudo’s UFC 238 victory at bantamweight.

For months now, questions of the UFC flyweight division’s future have swirled. Ever since Demetrious Johnson was traded to ONE Championship for Ben Askren, the future of the division seemed bleak. Flyweights were being cut. Several reported that they’d heard the weight class was being phased out. Yet the odd 125lb bout continued to be scheduled.

However, when flyweight champ Henry Cejudo put his focus on bantamweight, it felt as if winning a title in another weight class might be the final nail in the 125lb coffin. Cejudo captured that second belt Saturday night at UFC 238. He’s now another simultaneous champ in the UFC.

Yet if you’re expecting the division to go away, think again. That’s if you choose to believe UFC President Dana White, who said following UFC 238 that the division is sticking around. “It’s confirmed,” he said about the weight class staying put.

The question came up when White was asked about Cejudo defending two belts. “I said if he could get through Marlon Moraes, absolutely,” White said of the possibility of defending both titles. “Does anybody in this room think he couldn’t defend both titles? After the Marlon fight, I’m blown away by it.”

“Obviously him winning had a lot to do with the [flyweight] division,” White later added. That doesn’t mean it’s going away. “Have I said that it’s going away? Have I said that it’s leaving? I haven’t even talked about that division in months.”

So asked to tackle it from the other side, White said “it is confirmed (that the division is sticking around).”

Good news for flyweight fans.

It’s official — the UFC will return to Vancouver later this year, according to UFC President Dana White.

As expected, the UFC will head to Vancouver, B.C. in Canada later this year. A trip to Vancouver was discussed by UFC Senior VP of International and Content David Shaw in Ottawa last month, with Cageside Press on hand. Following UFC 238 in Chicago, IL on Saturday, UFC President Dana White confirmed the promotion would had to the west coast city.

The exact date of the Vancouver card, however, is up in the air. White, asked whether the UFC would be there in September, said “Potentially,” then added “just go with it. We’ll be in Vancouver in September. It’s official.”

However, the month of September already looks pretty full. The promotion will be in Abu Dhabi for UFC 242 to start the month. A date on September 28 at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark is also official. Two other dates are on the UFC calendar that month, but they have already announced September 21 for Mexico City. That leaves September 14, a card scheduled for ESPN+. Although not officially announced, it was rumored that the promotion would head to Amsterdam on that date.

If that rumor fails to pan out, however, it looks like that could be Vancouver’s date. If not, October is pretty much wide open. Either way, there’s no question that the UFC will be in the B.C. city shortly.

The promotion last visited Vancouver in 2016, hitting the Rogers Arena for UFC on FOX 21. They’ve actually headed to the city four times since 2010, starting with UFC 115, then UFC 131 the following year, and UFC 174 in 2014.

Despite a loss to Tony Ferguson after a doctor’s stoppage, Cowboy Cerrone picked up yet another post-fight bonus at UFC 238.

UFC 238 wound up in a race to the finish line, with the last three fights getting crazier and crazier. It started with Cowboy Cerrone vs. Tony Ferguson, which was a two-round war that was cut short due to a doctor’s stoppage.

Unfortunately, that ending came about when Cerrone tried to clear out some blood from a broken nose, which made matters worse. His eye had already been swelling. The move seemed to cause it to blimp up. Following the event, UFC President Dana White confirmed Cerrone, who had been taken to hospital, had suffered a fractured orbital.

The end left Ferguson with the win, though no one was truly happy. Still, it was enough to win Fight of the Night honors for the pair, White announced post-fight. That makes it a record 18th post-fight bonus for Cerrone.

The night’s other bonuses went to Valentina Shevchenko and Henry Cejudo, the winners of the co-main and main event, respectively. Shevchenko frankly stoke the show with a head kick knockout of Jessica Eye that left the challenger lying prone in the canvas.

Cejudo, meanwhile, finished Marlon Moraes in the third round to claim a second title, in a performance that will certainly shoot ‘The Messenger’ up the pound-for-pound list. Following the bout, Cejudo event expressed an interest in moving up to featherweight.

Attendence for UFC 238 at the United Center in Chicago was 16,083 for a gate of $2.03 million USD.

Another champ champ has been crowned in the UFC, as Henry Cejudo has joined the history books alongside Conor McGregor, Daniel Cormier, and Amanda Nunes as a simultaneous double champion.

Henry Cejudo is a double champ in the UFC. Sorry, triple champ, as he put it, counting Olympic gold. Cejudo pulled off the feat by overcoming a tough start, and putting away Marlon Moraes in the third round of their main event fight at UFC 238. The bantamweight title was on the line, following T.J. Dillashaw being suspended for EPO and stripped of the belt. Moraes was the number one contender. Cejudo, the UFC’s flyweight champ, who had beaten Dillashaw in January at 125lbs.

Cejudo overcame some nasty leg kicks, and turned up the heat on Moraes, eventually pummeling him into submission. For Moraes, it was just his second loss since 2011. It also snapped a four-fight win streak in the UFC.

Without question, fans and pros alike were blown away by the performance. See how the pros reacted to Henry Cejudo’s big win below.

Henry Cejudo had his legs kicked out from under him in the first round at UFC 238, but took over the fight from there, knocking out Marlon Moraes in the third to win bantamweight gold.

Henry Cejudo is an Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling who signed with the UFC at 6-0 in 2014. He won in his first four Octagon appearances to earn a title shot against one of the greatest fighters of all time in Demetrious Johnson. After a loss in that title shot, Cejudo was on the wrong side of a controversial decision against divisional stalwart Joseph Benavidez. He rebounded with two straight wins to get another shot at Mighty Mouse, and made the most of it by becoming the first flyweight to ever defeat Johnson. “The Messenger’s” first defense came against then-bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, who he knocked out in 30 seconds in February.

Marlon Moraes was regarded for a long time as one of the best fighters outside the UFC. “Magic” defended the WSOF bantamweight title six times and came to the promotion on a 13-fight win streak. After dropping his Octagon debut to the durable veteran Raphael Assuncao, Moraes went on a tear, winning his next four fights and stopping the latter three in the first rounds. Wins over Aljamain Sterling, Jimmie Rivera, and the aforementioned Assuncao got him here.

Marlon Moraes went for a leg kick and a head kick early on. He then went to the body, but Cejudo was out of range. Moraes med Henry Cejudo with a combination when the latter tried to come in with a strike. Low kicks landed several times for Moraes, who avoided Cejudo’s first takedown attempt, a single leg. Neither man was landing cleanly, aside from Moraes’ brutal leg kicks. It was a great start to the fight for Moraes.

Moraes stuck with the kicks to start the second round, and Cejudo tried to answer with more aggression. Cejudo landed a nice combination, but Moraes was still controlling the fight at kicking range. A leg kick swept Cejudo off his feet briefly, but this seemed to wake up the flyweight champion. Cejudo seemed to start landing right hand after right hand. He began using the Muay Thai clinch to land many knees to the head. Cejudo was battering Moraes, but was caught with a right hand at the very end of the round that hurt.

Cejudo kept the pressure on in the third round. More right hands landed for Cejudo on a seemingly out of it Moraes. An eye poke paused action briefly, but Cejudo went back to work. Right hand after right hand, knee after knee. Cejudo then went to the clinch and snapped down into a D’Arce choke. Moraes escaped, but Cejudo had top position. He postured up and landed huge ground-and-pound to finish the dazed Moraes near the end of the round. Incredible performance by Cejudo to win his second belt.

A massive, scary-looking head kick KO gave Valentina Shevchenko the first defense of her flyweight title at UFC 238 — see how the pros reacted!

Valentina Shevchenko made the first defense of her flyweight title at UFC 238 on Saturday. And she made a statement in the process. Taking on Jessica ‘Evil’ Eye, it was Shevchenko unleashing a decidedly evil-looking headkick in the second round. Shin hit dome, and Eye hit the canvas. Her title hopes evaporated like a cloud of smoke. Luckily, she was able to leave the octagon under her own power, the but finish sounded like she had been hit by a bat.

Post fight, Shevchenko called the women’s flyweight division the future of female fighting. It may very well be, but there’s a big question as to who will challenge her in the future. Katlin Chookagian has made a case, and defeated Joanne Calderwood earlier in the night. But does anyone really see ‘Bullet’ having more trouble with Chookagian than Eye?

There’s also the winner of Liz Carmouche vs. Roxanne Modafferi. Carmouche holds a win over Shevchenko from a previous encounter, up a weight class. Modafferi holds a win over Valentina’s sister.

Story lines sell, and either fighter could jump the line with a win over the other.

For now, though, here’s your reaction to the UFC 238 co-main event!
