Max Holloway’s reign as featherweight champion has been mired with health issues — so perhaps Brian Ortega is right.

At first when I considered writing this, I was going to say that the UFC should strip Max Holloway of his featherweight title. But perhaps the three-strike rule should increase to four this time.

Although Holloway has only one title defense in his 400+ days as champion, it is already more than what Conor McGregor did in his 350 days as the featherweight champion.

But UFC president Dana White should be ready to strip Holloway if his injuries and pullouts continue. What good is a champion if he is constantly pulling out?

In 2018 alone, Holloway has had to back out of three fights. Holloway pulled out of UFC 222 due to a leg injury. He agreed to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 on six days notice, but the commission stopped him during his weight cut. Holloway pulled out of UFC 226 last week with concussion-like symptoms.

Okay, perhaps he deserves a pass for UFC 223. He took a fight against an undefeated Nurmagomedov on six days notice. Not many fighters would agree to that. Plus, the commission stopped him during his weight cut. However, if a fighter accepts any fight, it is expected that they make weight. Otherwise, why accept the fight? The fact is, Holloway accepted a fight and could not make weight.

Whenever Holloway is cleared to return and whenever he is set to fight next, the UFC must expect him to make it to fight night. If Holloway drops out for a fourth consecutive time, the UFC must strip him of his title. It’s something would-be opponent Brian Ortega has already called for.

Yes, fighter safety should always come first. But as a business, the UFC needs an undisputed champion to be active.

The same thing would occur for a professional sports team. If a player is injury prone, missing a majority of the games each season, he will eventually be out of a job and not many teams will be interested in signing that player.

For the UFC, it should obviously give Holloway ample time to recover, given his three straight pull outs. Once Holloway has been cleared, the UFC has a reason to strip Holloway if he pulls out a fourth time.

USADA has confirmed that former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar re-entered the testing pool earlier this month, and have unveiled the time frame for his return.

And now we know when Brock Lesnar could potentially return to action in the UFC. Per a statement by USADA obtained by MMA Junkie, Lesnar re-entered the testing pool on July 3. With just a little over six months remaining on the suspension he incurred after failing drug tests tied to UFC 200 (where Lesnar defeated Mark Hunt, a win later overturned to a No Contest), that puts Lesnar on track for a January 8, 2019 return.

Of course, that’s a Tuesday, so unless Cormier vs. Lesnar is happening on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, don’t expect Lesnar to get back in the octagon that night.

In any case, the statement USADA provided was short and sweet: “After receiving notice of his intent to compete in the UFC, Brock Lesnar re-entered the testing pool on July 3,” USADA said. “With six months and four days remaining on his period of ineligibility, Lesnar will be able to compete on or after January 8, 2019, should he remain in compliance with the UFC Anti-Doping Policy.” – via MMA Junkie.

Lesnar and Cormier had a confrontation in the octagon following Cormier’s defeat of Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title at UFC 226. Cormier has called for both USADA testing and additional testing above and beyond USADA for Lesnar, though it’s not clear what that would entail, or even whether Lesnar is obligated to agree to such measures. What is clear is that the UFC and Lesnar plan to make this fight happen, so expect it to be booked sometime close to that January 8 date.

Francis Ngannou has vowed to make his fans proud again, after a dismal showing against Derrick Lewis at UFC 226.

Fans weren’t the only ones let down by the performance of Francis Ngannou at UFC 226. Along with them, opponent Derrick Lewis, and Dana White (who made note of Ngannou’s perceived ego issues), Ngannou himself was clearly disappointed in his showing. On Monday, he released a statement via his official Instagram account, addressing what many have called the worst heavyweight fight in UFC history.

Ngannou admitted that fear carried over from his last fight, a failed title bid at UFC 220 against Stipe Miocic. The Cameroonian fighter entered that contest the favorite in spite of Miocic being the reigning champion. Yet he simply couldn’t get the better of the Ohio native, and instead found himself gassing early in the bout.

Then came UFC 226, where it seemed as if Ngannou barely threw a strike.

“I am not proud of my last performance,” the heavyweight said. “I have carried my fear from the last fight to this one.” You can read Ngannou’s full statement below.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BlBCsqRAkAs/

Derrick Lewis wound up claiming a three-round unanimous decision win over Ngannou at UFC 226. The fight was heavily jeered by fans, who didn’t expect it to go past the first round. Let alone be the plodding, light-on-striking affair in turned out to be.

The UFC decided to forgo the Fight of the Night award and hand out four Performance of the Night bonuses at UFC 226.

It should come as no surprise that Daniel Cormier pocketed an extra fifty grand following UFC 226. If ever there was a showing worthy of a Performance of the Night bonus, well, it’s one that captured a second title. That was the case with Cormier, whose first round knockout of Stipe Miocic thrust him into double-champion status, and the history books.

Only two men in history have held dual gold in the UFC. Conor McGregor was the first. Now Daniel Cormier is the second. Somewhere, Jon Jones is gritting his teeth. For not only did Cormier do what Jones himself has long dreamed of, he did it without controversy. With style, and class. He avoided the perils of USADA, and even managed to snag a dream fight with Brock Lesnar. Something Jones has long coveted.

And despite that last paragraph, D.C. may even have the Jones monkey off his back. It’s not really necessary to compare them any longer, is it?

In any case, Cormier picked up one of four Performance of the Night bonuses at UFC 226 on Saturday in Las Vegas. Anthony Pettis claimed one as well, for dropping and submitting Michael Chiesa. Chiesa will head up to welterweight after the fight, though he’s another candidate for a potential 165lb division. Pettis, meanwhile, has at least momentarily re-established himself at lightweight.

Paulo Costa is a little richer also; despite some ugly low blows, he got the job done against Uriah Hall, standing toe-to-toe with the dangerous ‘Prime Time’ and eventually dropping him.

It appears that Brock Lesnar will get the next title shot at heavyweight in the UFC. And Lesnar’s fellow professional fighters were none to pleased with his return at UFC 226, for the most part.

It was no surprise to see former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesar at UFC 226 on Saturday night. News that he’d turn up at the event broke over a week ago. What was surprising was that Daniel Cormier, after winning the UFC heavyweight title by knocking out Stipe Miocic, called Lesnar out.

More accurately, he called him into the cage. And when Lesnar made his entrance, he made a scene. Shoving D.C. as the two came together, there was immediately a scuffle, as security got between them. Sure, there’s a good chance it was a work. Lesnar is a pro wrestler and WWE star, while Cormier is a huge pro wrestling fan. Sure, there’s a big question about the legitimacy of having a retired/suspended pro wrestler challenge for the heavyweight title. Lesnar still has to serve out his suspension with USADA stemming from UFC 200, where his win over Mark Hunt was overturned to a No Contest.

That said, Brock Lesnar will get people talking. As will what Brock Lesnar said and did in the cage at UFC 226. Lesnar referred to the co-main event’s Francis Ngannou as s***. He called fallen champ Stipe Miocic s***. He shoved Cormier, who came back with “push me now, you go to sleep later.”

“I’m walking into this building, and watching a heavyweight disaster from the beginning,” Lesnar said. “Ngannou’s a piece of s***. Miocic’s a piece of s***. D.C., I’m coming for you motherf*****!” Lesnar then threw the mic, hitting a camera and cracking its lens. That moment (with a fair amount of bleeps) will no doubt be part of an upcoming promo.

Here’s how the pros saw the return of Lesnar — and it wasn’t always pretty:

The UFC crowned its second “champ champ” as Daniel Cormier knocked out Stipe Miocic of the first round of UFC 226 in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

After a lackluster affair in the UFC 226 co-main event, Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier were looked upon to cap off an otherwise exciting night of fights. With former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar watching from the crowd, Cormier, the UFC light heavyweight champion, was looking to claim the heavyweight title from Miocic, and become the promotion’s second-ever simultaneous dual-weight champion.

Miocic might have been the best heavyweight champion in UFC history. Yet to Cormier, that mattered not. The former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner and UFC 205lb king was a little slow getting going, but he hit home when it counted. Coming out of a clinch, Cormier cracked Miocic with a punch, dropping him. Stipe Miocic hit the floor, and just a few more strikes finished him off. The ref waved it off, and Daniel Cormier was the new ‘champ champ’ in the UFC. An insane turn of events, going from Jon Jones defeating him for the title, only for DC to have it returned as Jones failed his drug tests, then defending the light heavyweight title against Volkan Oezdemir and now capturing heavyweight gold.

DC called out Lesnar following the fight, which led to a shoving match. There’ll be plenty of reaction to that, but let’s see the pros react to D.C’s history making win!

UFC 226’s main event between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier was marketed as a superfight, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Now, Daniel Cormier is the new heavyweight champion — and Brock Lesnar is looming in the distance.

Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier are two of the most accomplished fighters in UFC history. That goes without saying. Cormier is 20-1 (1NC), and considered one of the best fighters ever, while Stipe Miocic is the most decorated UFC heavyweight of all time. With three defenses of his championship, he was looking to make it four against Cormier and stop him from making history at UFC 226 in Las Vegas. Cormier, of course, was looking to be the second fighter ever to hold two championships at once.

Round one began with Stipe putting pressure on DC and trying to work the clinch and work him against the fence. Cormier landed a couple of nice low leg kicks and worked inside on Stipe Miocic. Miocic had the clear size advantage, but in the end, it didn’t matter. Near the end of the round as Stipe was exiting the clinch, DC landed a right hook that turned the lights off of Stipe Miocic. A couple of follow up punches and it was done — Daniel Cormier was a dual weight champion!

After the bout, Cormier called out a former champion and All-American wrestler, none other than Brock Lesnar! Telling Lesnar to “get his ass” in the cage, Lesnar was more than happy to oblige, and instantly shoved Cormier. Calling the heavyweight division s*** he promised to bring the fight to Comier, while Cormier promised to finish the wrestling star. How this plays out, given Lesnar is suspended, remains to be seen. But ‘The Beast’ is looming in the distance for Cormier.

It was immediately being called one of the worst heavyweight fights of all time. And while that might be pushing it, Ngannou vs. Lewis at UFC 226 was a snooze-fest.

Promoted to the co-main event at UFC 226 in the wake of Max Holloway’s withdrawal, Francis Ngannou vs. Derrick Lewis promised to be one of those King King vs. Godzilla, Behemoth vs. Leviathan style battles that can only happen in the heavyweight division. Like watching worlds collide, the fight took place Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was expected to inch one man closer to a shot at the winner of the main event.

A don’t blink sort of affair, that’s what it was advertised as. What played out was anything but. Ngannou vs. Lewis arrived not with a bang, but with a whimper. It ended the same way, with the biggest commotion the sound of the crowd voicing their displeasure.

Lewis opened with a high kick well wide. Ngannou sitting back, showing some stance switches. Another kick by Lewis, and this one connected. He followed up by throwing leather over the top off the kick. Lewis then went high with a switch kick. Lewis went to the body next. Then fanned with a front kick. With two minutes left in the round, Ngannou still hadn’t let his hands go — not a single punch thrown by the former title challenger. Lewis then moved in for a takedown off a kick, but was easily shrugged off. Ngannou popped off a jab, remembering his striking for the first time in the fight. A jab to the body followed. Another switch kick from Lewis came in the last seconds of the round, and the buzzer came shortly after. A strange approach from Ngannou to be sure.

Round two saw Ngannou whiff with a punch early. The feeling out process, or one-sided affair with only Lewis throwing (and then mostly kicks) continued. Fans in the stands at the T-Mobile Arena broke out their phones and lighters, rock n’ roll ballad style. Lewis fired another high kick. ‘The Black Beast’ chopped at the legs, but Herb Dean was finally fed up and warned the fighters to engage. Back underway Lewis went to the body. He was going after it, at least a fair bit more than Ngannou, but the crowd remained irritated, to say the least.

At the risk of hyperbole, Francis Ngannou had gone from lion to mouse between his UFC 220 title fight against Stipe Miocic and his meeting with Derrick Lewis. Lewis was a dancer without a partner, practically shadow boxing. If you were waiting for Ngannou to explode, it didn’t happen. The pair engaged a little towards the end of the round, but it was mostly Lewis making the effort, and Ngannou was nearly jeered out of the arena.

Derrick Lewis def. Francis Ngannou by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

UFC 226 featured a must see fight between Paul Felder and the always entertaining Mike Perry. The promising scrap it turned into a bloody war, with Felder holding on despite a broken arm, and Perry capturing the split decision win.

A fight that wasn’t even scheduled two weeks ago turned into one of UFC 226’s most anticipated fights through the promotion during fight week. Paul Felder, coming up from lightweight after his bout with James Vick fell through, stepped up on a week’s notice to fight Platinum Mike Perry. Both fighters have gone in different directions lately, with Perry losing two in a row and Felder winning three straight. But a win could help boost the other regardless of their position in their respective divisions.

At the end of this one, however, there were no losers. A bloody war meant the fans were the biggest winners.

The fight started out a brawl, a technical brawl but a brawl nonetheless. The pair clinched early and both landed elbows that opened the other man up. Felder had great timing to start and landed some really nice straights jabs and knees as Perry was coming in. However Perry stuck it out, and closed the distance, landing shots himself. By the end of round both fighters were cut and bleeding, with well over a hundred strikes thrown. Keep in mind, that was in round one alone.

Mike Perry opened the second round with a bang, and slammed Felder down. Felder managed to get back to his feet and after the two traded for a bit, Perry landed a left hook that was like a gunshot — it immediately opened up Felder bad enough that the doctor was called in almost immediately. Felder was gushing blood, but the doctor wasn’t overly concerned about the cut. Back underway, Perry suplexed Felder which didn’t help matters. Felder recovered and the two ended the round trading elbows.

With every strike the two landed it, the impact was obvious. Felder told his team in between rounds that his arm was broken. Yet despite that he continued using the wounded limb as best he could, even using it in spinning attacks. Felder kept throwing the kitchen sink at Mike Perry, when it came right down to it. Perry, as the fight went on, appeared to find his range and landed some brutal right hands. In the end, the fight was an absolute war that more than lived up to the hype. Come the scorecards being read, Perry took the win with two of three judges.

Regardless of result, we saw that the move to Jackson Wink have obvious impact on Mike Perry’s patience and development. It’ll be interesting to see where he goes from here.

UFC 226’s main card featured a showcase of the lightweight division featuring Michael Chiesa and Anthony Pettis that did not disappoint.

Yesterday, at the UFC 226 weigh-ins, a lightweight bout was turned into a catchweight affair as Michael Chiesa missed weight by a pound and a half. Chiesa was fined a percentage of his purse, and vowed to exit the division for welterweight. Regardless of that, Anthony Pettis vs. Michael Chiesa was must win for both of them. Chiesa had lost to Kevin Lee last time out, and Pettis to Dustin Poirer. Both coming off losses, it was especially a must win for Anthony Pettis, who had fallen on hard times after losing his title to RDA in 2015. He’d gone just 2-5 since then, including a failed stint at featherweight.

The beginning of the fight largely revolved around Chiesa’s game plan coming to fruition, taking the fight to the ground — but Pettis showed how savvy he is there. He looked for multiple submissions including getting the back of Chiesa at one point. However on the feet Pettis had a noticable advantage, and was landing a number of leg kicks. Pettis and Chiesa got in each other’s faces at the end of round one, and the bad blood showed as the fight progressed.

Round two began, and in the blink of an eye Pettis rocked and dropped Chiesa! Pettis dropped down for a guillotine but couldn’t secure it. Chiesa tried to compose himself in Pettis’s guard but got caught slipping, allowing Pettis to lock in a triangle-armbar. That’s all she wrote! What a performance by Showtime. A key win by the former champion.
