It’s another milestone event for BareKnuckle FC on Saturday, as BKFC KnuckleMania 4 takes place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, CA.

The bareknuckle boxing behemoth’s KnuckleMania 4 is headlined by “King of Violence” / “Platinum” Mike Perry, who will look to continue a recent surge against Thiago Alves – a former UFC title challenger, and the inaugural BKFC middleweight champion.

Alves will be making his return to action in the bout after being on hiatus since 2021. Perry, meanwhile, earned the “King of Violence” title in a bout with Eddie Alvarez this past December which saw him stop the former UFC and Bellator MMA lightweight champ.

In the co-main event, heavyweight champ Mick Terrill put his title on the line against Lorenzo Hunt, while former UFC stars Ben Rothwell and Todd Duffee were also in action. The bout, originally scheduled for months early, was likely to produce the next tilte challenger in the weight class. Julian Lane, of “Let me bang, bro!” fame and now a BKFC mainstay, was also on the docket, taking on Evgeny Kurdanov in a main card bout.

Todd Duffee gets another crack at “Big” Ben Rothwell at BKFC KnuckleMania 4 later this month, after the pair of UFC alums’ original booking in December fell through.

Oddly enough, however, Duffee, who has struggled to compete in recent years due to health and circumstance, originally thought he was fighting someone else at the biggest bareknuckle card of 2024.

“To be very honest I thought I was fighting [Lorenzo] Hunt,” Duffee told Cageside Press in a recent exclusive interview. “My manager told me I was fighting Hunt, so I trained for Hunt for about a month, and then three weeks ago they let me know it was going to be Ben.”

Despite finally making his debut for a new promotion, and in a new sport, Duffee doesn’t expect to have many nerves. He’s a veteran of the game now, one who actually wishes the butterflies would fly just a little bit more.

“I hope to have as many nerves as possible. It’s ideal, realistically. Especially for five two minute rounds or six two minute rounds, however it works out. But no. I hope to be as nervous as I need to be.”

Having already trained for Rothwell once before, preparing for “Big” Ben has been a bit like studying for a familiar test. To some extent. “Is it like studying for a test? Yeah it really is, but every day is a new day, every fight is a new fight,” stated Duffee. “Ben’s a different guy than he was yesterday, I’m a different guy than I was.”

The winner of Ben Rothwell vs. Todd Duffee is widely expected to be in line for the next title shot. That’s not something Duffee, now 38, is focused on however. Even if his last action was a fight for the KSW heavyweight title, against Phil De Fries in 2023.

“I honestly don’t give a sh*t about titles, I think they’re kind of meaningless to be very honest with you,” exclaimed Duffee. “But of course I want to fight the best, so that is where the best is at so of course that’s what I’m after.”

“I’m more after names. Like I said I’m fighting the best guy in the division right now, that’s why I’m taking the fight, that’s why I pushed for this fight, so I’m excited about that. You want to chase titles if you’re chasing names, but I want guys who are the best, so that’s what I’m doing.”

Saturday night’s BKFC 56 has taken a heavy blow, as heavyweight Ben Rothwell is off the card.

Rothwell was expected to throw down with fellow UFC alum Todd Duffee at the event, which takes place at the Maverik Center in Salt Lake City, UT on Saturday, December 2, 2023. Another pair of former UFC notables, Eddie Alvarez and Mike Perry, headline the show.

Rothwell’s withdrawal from the event was announced by BKFC President David Feldman during Thursday’s BKFC 56 press conference.

Oddly enough, Rothwell vs. Duffee was announced as the presser got underway, though only Duffee appeared on stage.

“I do have an unfortunate announcement to make,” Feldman said after taking the mic. “Our co-main event, Ben Rothwell actually came down really, really sick this morning, and he’s not going to be able to compete. We tried to get a last-minute replacement for Todd Duffee, and we just couldn’t line it up, so we’re going to push that fight to February. Sorry to the fans for that one, but we still have a stacked card, an unbelievable main event, and really a lot to be excited about here in Salt Lake City.”

Duffee did not hold back after the news was announced.

“I fought with COVID my last fight, so I really think Ben’s real fight is happening with the scale,” Duffee said. “I think Thanksgiving was his biggest opponent. I don’t know what else to really add to that.”

Todd Duffee was to make his bare-knuckle debut in the fight. The heavyweight has had a rough time getting fights to stay together, and saw an opportunity to fight in RIZIN earlier this year fall through due to visa issues. Before that, he had a fight lined up with Adam Koresh in Israel, but didn’t receive a contract in time. The ex-UFC star did get one fight in under his belt in 2023, losing to a former foe in Phil De Fries under the KSW banner.

“Big” Ben Rothwell is 2-0 under the BKFC banner to date.

It seems like bad luck just follows some guys and it seems to have bit Rizin heavyweight Todd Duffee again as he’s been pulled from Rizin Landmark 6 this weekend due to visa issues.

Rizin announced the change on Thursday.

In a statement Rizin announced Duffee’s withdrawal from the event, and his replacement.

“Tsuyoshi Sudario’s original opponent, Todd Duffee, was replaced due to travel complications. Sudario will now face Dong Hwan Lim.”

This is the second consecutive event that Duffee has had to withdraw from due to visa issues. The fight was originally supposed to take place at Rizin 44, but problems getting a visa pushed the fight to Rizin Landmark 6.

This would have been Duffee’s second fight of 2023 following a four year absence from competition after his last fight in the UFC which ended in a “No Contest” due to an eye poke. His first fight back was at KSW 79 which he lost via TKO to Phillip De Fries in February.

Duffee had made the media round recently promoting his fight, and spoke to Cageside Press about how he felt about some MMA managers and promotions joining fellow professional MMA fighter and current UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley.

“Promoters don’t necessarily want what fans want. That’s what I would say. It’s a dirty game in that aspect especially. There’s a bad MMA manager mafia that kind of controls the majority of these promotions, and if you’re not in one of those, you’re not getting in a lot of times. It’s not for lack of trying.”

He also told Cageside Press about visa issues he was facing.

“It’s a serious hassle to pull it off, I’ll be honest. I’m knee deep in visa paperwork now as we speak.”

No word on if Duffee will be booked in a future Rizin event as of this posting.

Rizin Landmark 6 will be held on Oct 1 at the Dolphins Arena in Nagoya, Japan. The event is headlined by a bantamweight bout between Hideo Tokoro and Alan Yoshihiro Yamaniha.

Japan’s RIZIN Fighting Federation returned to the famed Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan on Saturday for RIZIN 44.

The 11-fight card was primarily MMA action with a single kickboxing bout mixed in for good measure. For western fight fans willing to stay up late (or get up early), the event featured a handful of familiar names— UFC veteran Masanori Kanehara was in the co-main event, taking on former RIZIN featherweight champ Kleber Koike of Brazil.

Koike, also a former KSW champ, had been stripped off his title previously after missing weight for a fight with Chihiro Suzuki in June. Coupled with a non-title fight loss to Patricio Pitbull last December, it was a bit of a rough patch for Koike. Kanehara, meanwhile, had won three straight, and five of his six fights since exiting the UFC in 2016.

Also in action, former UFC fighter and Bellator star Spike Carlyle, and heavyweight veteran Todd Duffee, who served two stints in the UFC.<del> Duffee was paired up with former sumo wrestler and RIZIN mainstay Tsuyoshi Sudario</del> (that bout is postponed due to travel issues), while Carlyle, a.k.a. “The Alpha Ginger,” was booked against fellow UFC alum Yoshinori Horie.

RIZIN 44 gets underway at 1AM ET on Sunday, September 24, 2023 with an English stream airing live via Fite.tv. Full results can be found below.

Something is set to happen this weekend that hasn’t happened in more than a decade: competing at RIZIN 44 against Japanese heavyweight Tsuyoshi Sudario, Todd Duffee is fighting twice in a calendar year.

After years of struggles with injury and a falling out with the UFC (who later signed him to a second stint), Duffee finally has a chance to get active. He returns to the cage, or in this case the ring, looking to bounce back from a loss in his rematch with Phil De Fries under the KSW banner earlier this year.

Originally, Duffee was lined up for a fight with Adam Koresh in fledgling promotion Israel Fight Night, only for things to fall through. “I had a verbal agreement to fight Koresh, but I didn’t get the contract in time. And I didn’t want to put off RIZIN,” Duffee (9-4, 1NC) told Cageside Press in a recent interview. “It’s just one of those things. I don’t know why they announced it prior to a contract, I didn’t view the contract.”

With the RIZIN offer on the table, the choice was clear. And while he admits it’s nice to be fighting twice in a year, after dealing with Parsonage–Turner syndrome, knee and shoulder injuries, and even COVID over the years, Duffee also added that “it’s a serious hassle to pull it off, I’ll be honest. I’m knee deep in visa paperwork now as we speak.”

Duffee’s struggles with health have been well-documented over the years. What has perhaps been less well-documented are his thoughts on managers in the sport, and his struggles to fight while going it alone in terms of management in more recent times.

Duffee, who still hopes to fight again for KSW at some point, noted that “I think I’ve been very lucky to get this opportunity with RIZIN. I would have liked to fight for KSW sooner, it just didn’t work out with timing and I was desperate to find a fight. I heard that they were looking for somebody for this guy, and I signed up for it.”

To help the process, Duffee did sign up with a new manager a few months back (in the past, he’s been managed by Alex Davis, and later Dominance MMA); prior to that, even RIZIN didn’t appear ready to engage him. It’s “just a part of the business that people want to ignore, pretend like it doesn’t exist,” Duffee later stated, questioning what purpose managers really serve in mixed martial arts.

“I don’t think managers are really necessary in the sport past the promoters using managers to manipulate. I don’t know what managers do past make friends with the promoters and massage their guys in. I’m really lacking to understand what that is in MMA. And the reality is, if you don’t have a manager, a lot of times the promotions won’t even talk to you. They’ll dismiss you, and I don’t have an answer as to why that is. Have some ideas; every promotion’s different.”

Todd Duffee is not alone with this criticism. Dominick Cruz has opted to manage himself, while fellow bantamweight (and current UFC champ) Sean O’Malley has repeatedly criticized the role of managers in MMA. Combat Sports Law’s Erik Magraken took a look at MMA management contracts back in 2020, more recently, he suggested that to get to the UFC, fighters needed to sign a deal with “cozy” managers, before signing their deal with the promotion itself.

One factor that could throw the entire management industry in MMA for a loop is the ongoing antitrust lawsuit against the UFC, which was recently given class certification. A judge also ruled that records in the case were to be unsealed — including fighter contracts. Duffee noted that there are some positives emerging from that action.

“I think the one thing that’s going good on the current situation is, it’s in October [when court records will be unsealed]. So it looks like a judgment may happen quickly, and it sounds like the judge is very— he left kind of a scathing rebuke, I guess you could say almost. He used strong words.”

Duffee added, however, that “we don’t know how much of that is a political move, and how much is him actually, he means what he says, like ‘oh sh*t we’ve got a problem here, I’m going to do something about it.'”

While Duffee is one of the fighters covered by the class action lawsuit, he’s not one of the fighters directly involved. “I don’t have high expectations. I don’t imagine that will work out much cleaner. At best, they’re going to pull in a billion, those lawyers are going to take over half, and then maybe they’ll set up some medical fund for guys, I think that’s the most you could hope for from it. And then I guess maybe you could hope that contracts change, and managers, and things like that.”

What Duffee sees, however, is a problem of not just scale, or empathy, but turnover among the fanbase. The media, he noted, has to constantly re-educate the next generation of fans.

“I think casual fans and the fanbase in general is a three to five year shelf life. You guys have to constantly re-educate. The people who cared about this back in 2012 are probably not even fans of the sport right now,” suggested Duffee. “At least from my perspective, I’ve seen that quite a lot.”

He also questions whether the ongoing lawsuit is digging deep enough. “You’re talking to somebody who was cut for their ‘attitude problem,'” said Duffee, regarding the end to his first UFC run. Keep in mind, UFC fighters are independent contractors, supposedly, not employees. “They [those behind the lawsuit] didn’t want to know about my situation. So I don’t know how dirty and gnarly they’re going to really get. I think it’ll probably be less shocking than is being advertised. But we’ll see I guess.”

There are solutions, believes Duffee, to the fighter pay issue. “Use your fighters as an ambassador, give them a salary, 50K a year that way they’re not destitute. That alone might alleviate a lot of this bullsh*t.” As for the lawsuit, while some good may come of it, Duffee also expects some growing pains.

“It may be a very drastic impact and there may be a very big money cut initially with some of these new things that pass, and I don’t think people are realizing that. People may stand to make less money when this all comes through, at least in the initial phases.”

Which brings us to what fighting is, and is not, in terms of a profession. For many, it’s not a full time job. “People think it’s so cool that I fight professionally, until they actually find out what that entails,” Duffee told us. “And then they’re like ‘oh that’s stupid, why do you do that?’ It’s a lot of propaganda.”

“There’s just a lot of propaganda to be a fan of MMA,” he added. Asked how one gets by in a situation like his, having to take years off from fighting for a living, Duffee replied by saying “that’s the big joke. No fighter fights for a living. It’s a lie. It’s a myth. It’s more propaganda. Very few and far between are actually doing this for a living. I have another job, I work as a personal trainer. I own stuff.”

That’s no surprise. Many other fighters teach classes, or run their own gym.

“It’s a hobby, bro. Fighting is a professional hobby. And it’s a shame. To do it at the level that you have to do it at, it becomes a very gnarly scenario essentially. My god, look at the hours you have to put in, look at the time you have to put in, and look what that takes away. And then, what are you getting back?”

“That’s how it’s been set up forever,” Duffee continued. “It’s about the platform fighting gets you. That’s why you can fight for show and win money, because you’re getting a platform.”

Show and win money was another topic that prompted Duffee, now one of the veterans of the heavyweight division, to laugh. He questioned the reasoning behind the concept. “You’re worried about a guy not going out and fighting and protecting his physical health, that’s your excuse? You think he’s going to go a little less because there’s not any incentive financially?”

With promotions maintaining that health is not enough of an incentive, “fans and people really believe ‘oh that’s how you motivate him to fight,'” said Duffee. “Yeah, that’s how you do it? That’s what’s motivating him? It’s not the fact that they’re locked in a cage with someone that will physically harm them if they don’t fight?”

Of course, Duffee has his own fight coming up on September 24 at RIZIN 44. At the Saitama Super Arena, he’ll face former sumo wrestler Tsuyoshi Sudario. Duffee was quick to point out the misconceptions fight fans may have about his opponent.

“I think when people here sumo, they hear Akebono, and even Akebono would fight. That’s not what this guy is. This guy is a guy who has been a professional athlete probably his whole life as a sumo wrestler, but he’s young enough and he has started MMA early enough that he has just been given some of the sumo attributes. He probably has a good understanding of discipline, that’s why he’s been able to acquire skills at a very fast rate from my judgment of watching his fights.”

He sees his opponent more along the lines of a college football player making the transition to MMA. “He’s young, he’s highly athletic. When people think of sumo wrestlers, they don’t think of athleticism, honestly they should because they’re very good in those first two steps. They’re also going to have very quick hands.”

The different rule set is another factor in the fight, one Duffee believes is bigger than it seems.

“It’s a completely different sport. When you take away the cage, it’s a different sport. When you add the additional leg strikes on the ground to a grounded opponent, that is also a different sport,” opined Duffee. “The dynamic is completely different. It’s different every which way. You go from cage wrestling to over/under Greco open-mat, freestyle wrestling. Those are two different sports. Cage wrestling is its own thing.”

Truth be told, the 15+ year veteran of the sport actually sounds excited about all of it. “It’s different dynamics. The cage plays to the bigger power athletes typically, especially with heavyweights. This format kind of plays to the martial artist a little better. It’s definitely exciting, it’s a new challenge, it’s definitely stimulating from the mental side,” Duffee admitted. “That’s been the really interesting part of the camp — I’m opening up tools that I haven’t opened up since I was 24 or 22, back when we were still trying to figure out how this sport worked.”

KSW heavyweight champion Phil De Fries is not the same man who fell early to Todd Duffee in their 2012 meeting back in the UFC.

The British heavyweight will be the first to tell you that. The De Fries of 2012 was going through a dark time, not just in fighting but in life — his struggles with anxiety and alcoholism now well-documented.

On Saturday, atop KSW 79, the Polish promotion’s debut in nearby Czech Republic, De Fries had a rare opportunity — to avenge that loss to Duffee in a rematch a decade in the making.

De Fries, on a ten-fight win streak with seven title defenses, made the most of it, returning the favor and stopping Duffee inside of a round.

Duffee had been the center of attention ahead of the fight, turning up on The MMA Hour and elsewhere after a three-year absence. He promised to take care of a fighter he’d labelled “boring” despite admitting that the Phil De Fries of 2023 was a very different athlete.

It wasn’t long, however, before Duffee was on the ground. Soon enough, he’d given up his back, with De Fries mounted on top of him. Down came the ground n’ pound, as Duffee covered up, escape out of the question, and too much time on the clock to weather the storm.

The ref waved it off. De Fries had title defense #8 in the bag, and his eleventh straight win.

With Michal Kita defeating Daniel Omielańczuk earlier in the night, what comes next for De Fries will be interesting. The promotion recently announced a return to Poland’s national stadium, PGE Narodowy, in Warsaw this June. Having the heavyweight title on the line at KSW Colosseum 2 is a no-brainer — but with De Fries continuing to clean out the division (he’s already defeated Kita, and everyone else the promotion has thrown at him), the question is, who’s left?

KSW made its debut in the Czech Republic on Saturday, with KSW 79 topped by an intriguing title fight.

A decade removed from his UFC run, Phil De Fries has become a dominant force in KSW’s heavyweight division. The dominant force. Since capturing the title in 2018, the Englishman has defended his championship a stunning seven times, knocking off two UFC veterans, and a couple of KSW champions (Tomasz Narkun, Karol Bedorf) in that span.

Overall, De Fries has won ten straight fights, with his opponents sporting a combined 160-54 record in that span. That number becomes even more impressive when you consider that a 2017 Bellator fight with James Thompson accounts for 13 of those losses.

One of De Fries’ own losses returned to face him for the second time this weekend. Out of action since a 2019 No Contest at UFC Vancouver, Todd Duffee finally returned to the cage. Their first fight saw Duffee score a knockout inside of a round; both fighters would tell you that the 2012 contest saw a very different De Fries enter the cage.

Would he avenge the loss on Saturday at KSW 79, or would lightning strike twice for Duffee, who has had to overcome numerous injuries and ailments over the years?

Phil De Fries and Todd Duffee weren’t the only UFC vets in action on Saturday, as heavyweight Daniel Omielanczuk was matched up with a former title challenger in Michal Kita.

KSW 79 takes place at the Home Credit Arena in Librec, Czech Republic on Saturday, February 25, 2023. The card streams live via KSWTV.com; full results from the event can be found below.

A massive heavyweight main event accompanies KSW to the Czech Republic this Saturday, where KSW 79 goes down at the Home Credit Arena in Liberec.

In a rematch over a decade in the making, Phil De Fries will look to make his eighth consecutive title defense opposite the returning Todd Duffee. The pair first met in 2012, when Duffee knocked out De Fries inside of a round at UFC 155.

Since then, the duo have travelled very different paths. Duffee has fought in fits and starts, struggling with injury and illness including Parsonage–Turner, a knee injury, and an MRSA infection. He last competed in 2019, in a bout with Jeff Hughes at UFC Vancouver that ended in a No Contest due to an eye poke.

De Fries, meanwhile, has stayed busy, winning ten straight fights dating back to 2017 and defending his KSW heavyweight championship a stunning seven times. Arguably one of the best heavyweights outside the UFC, De Fries has a rare chance for vengeance in the KSW 79 main event — where he’ll look to show just how much he has evolved as a fighter.

Former UFC heavyweight Daniel Omielanczuk will also be in action on Saturday, looking to pick up his second straight victory.

Full results from Friday’s KSW 79 weigh-in can be found below. The event takes place Saturday, February 25, 2023 in Librec, Czech Republic at the Home Credit Arena, streaming live via KSWTV.com.
