Parnasse, a double-champ who had even made an attempt for three belts, was putting his lightweight crown on the line against longtime Polish veteran Macin Held. In years past, Held had found some success in the UFC in Bellator, and had the chance for the biggest win of his career at home in Poland.

It was almost a shock when Parnasse had opted to re-sign with KSW, rather than jump to the UFC as a high-profile free again.

Also on the card, former UFC star Tamires Vidal. She was paired up with Wiktoria Czyżewska.

Earlier this month, no fewer than 15 names were removed from the promotion’s athlete database. Now, as of Tuesday, eight more have joined them (and nine if you count Jake Hadley, whose exit was confirmed last week).

Among these latest names are former UFC women’s strawweight and The Ultimate Fighter 20 alum Jessica Penne, Olympic medalist Robelis Despaigne, and talented Brazilian flyweight Matheus Nicolau. While Penne recently lost her third straight fight, and Despaigne was coming off back-to-back setbacks, Nicolau remains something of a surprise. While he had lost three straight, those losses had all come to top talents, including title challengers in Alex Perez and Brandon Royval.

The total list of names removed from the roster on Tuesday are below. The changes were first noted by UFC Roster Tracker, an automated service that monitor’s the promotion’s fighter database. Removal doesn’t necessarily mean “cut” – retirement (as in the case of Daniel Pineda) or fighting out a contract can also see a fighter removed.

That was the weight of Edwards, who came in three pounds heavy for the fight, even after shedding her clothes and taking the braids out of her hair. It was Edwards’ third time missing weight in the UFC, following incidents in 2022 and 2023.

The pair opened with kicks, going back and forth, until Edwards fired off a combo. Vidal would close the distance a minute in, battling for a takedown. When they went to the ground, it was in a heap, and Edwards threatened to reverse; instead they got back up still in a clinch, with Vidal refusing to bail on it. Edwards then reversed the position, putting Vidal against the cage. She broke free at long last, firing a punch over the top as she did, then went back to firing jabs and kicks, using her range. Vidal, in contrast, threw some haymakers, clearly looking to do damage or find the finish. Edwards kept at Vidal’s lead leg with her kicks, targeted the body with a jab, and fired off a pair of spinning back fists. But Vidal was undeterred, attacking the body herself and brushing off yet another spinning back fist.

A fourth spinning back fist attempt with just over a minute on the clock fanned. What didn’t miss was the combo she fired off moments later. Edwards then changed levels for a takedown and landed it, but not before eating several elbows.

Edwards opened round two with a kick, and followed that with a sizzling right hand. Another spinning back fist by Edwards was blocked. Spinning back fist count: five (four either landing or blocked, one sailing wide). Vidal touched a thigh with a kick, and Edwards answered in kind. Vidal then closed the distance, got a body lock in place, and went after a takedown, initially unable to land it. She did however take the back and attempt to sneak a hook in, only for Edwards to defend, dropping elbows. After more clinch work, Edwards drove her opponent across the octagon, eventually landing her own takedown, settling into half guard. Edwards was close to pulling her leg through, with side control available. Vidal wound up just hanging on, doing enough to keep Edwards from passing, but unable to scramble free or reverse.

Round three saw Vidal try her own spinning back fist 90 seconds or so in, which Edwards took advantage of. She chose that moment to land a well-timed takedown. Vidal was on her back, at center, miles away from the fence. Edwards had over half a round to work. Smashing elbows rained down from Edwards, but Vidal survived, grabbing a leg. With no submission to be found Edwards instead took the back, fired some elbows, and got a body triangle in place, sinking in a rear-naked choke then forcing the tap!

The weight misses remain a concern, but Joselyne Edwards may have saved her job, snapping a two-fight skid with the submission win.

Gatto, normally a flyweight, was looking to shake off losses to Ariane Lipski and Tracy Cortez.

This one went to the ground early, with Gatto on top, but Vidal working on a guillotine off her back. Once Gatto pulled free, she spent the entirety of the round on top, and towards the final minute was able to create space to start doing damage. With all of thirty seconds still on the clock, Gatto moved to mount, and would finish the round there, having been in control for the better part of five minutes.

Early in round two Gatto charged forward firing a one-two. They’d head to the cage, battling in the clinch, with Gatto finally landing a throw takedown near the midway mark of the round. That was more time spent on the feet for Tamires Vidal in round one, but she still found herself on the ground, with Gatto riding her back, hooks in and lots of time on the clock. She couldn’t find the submission, however, and the pair would head to the third.

Having been dominated through two rounds, Vidal needed a finish, but her corner instead advised patience. In the end it would not matter. In a strange scene early in the third, a jab by Gatto connected to the chest. Vidal held her breast and gave the ref a look before turning away, with it unclear whether it was pain, or a wardrobe issue, that caused her reaction. In any case, turning away was the wrong decision as the ref opted to wave off the fight, giving Melissa Gatto a TKO win.

In her own promotional debut, Brazil’s Vidal had stunned Ramona Pascual with a flying knee last November. As for Rendon, she had missed the historic Noche UFC, celebrating Mexican Independence Day, by just a week. But she had plenty of reason to celebrate regardless by the end of the night.

Vidal started of the fight with a few kicks. Rendon was coming forward and was finding a home for her right hand. When Vidal started to go forward she was throwing but missing wide on her punches. She was landing leg kicks but Rendon was the one landing on the chin. Rendon ended up pressing Vidal against the cage looking for a takedown but couldn’t get it. Vidal landed a few power hooks into the clinch where she went for a takedown. The round ended with Vidal’s back against the cage.

Vidal took center cage to start round two. Vidal was actively throwing the legs kicks to the outside and inside. Rendon did catch a kick and Vidal fell to her back. Rendon jumped on top but Vidal used a leg lock to get back to her feet. Neither girl was landing anything significant on their feet. Vidal was landing soft leg kicks and Rendon was coming up short with the jab. Vidal did start to double down on the leg kicks and threw about six back-to-back. Rendon caught another kick and was able to take Vidal down. Rendon ended the round on top landing a few short elbows.

In the final round, it was likely tied up with round three deciding the winner. Vidal was back to work early with the inside and outside leg kicks. The leg kicks were Vidal’s best weapon but they were also her only weapon. Rendon was mixing it up better but wasn’t throwing enough nor was she setting anything up. She was doing a good job catching the kicks and she did again planting Vidal. As the leg kicks were the best weapon for Vidal it was also costing her because Rendon was taking her down off catching the kicks. Like in round two Vidal had nothing to offer off her back and Rendon rode out the final round on top.

Making her debut at UFC Vegas 79 on Saturday is women’s bantamweight Montserrat Rendon, who is set to take on Tamires Vidal. The Fight Night card is headlined by lightweights Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot, with a solid co-headliner in Bryce Mitchell vs. Dan Ige.

If Rendon is going to beat anyone in the UFC it’s gonna be Vidal. She did win her UFC debut by a flying knee but it’s overblown. Neither fighter is technical on the feet and both are flat-footed. Vidal is more explosive which could be an advantage in this fight. The ground game is where she wants to be, but it doesn’t help that her wrestling isn’t up to par. Her takedown defense hasn’t looked good either and off her back there are problems. Honestly, there aren’t a lot of positives to point out with Vidal. This is not a UFC-level fight and I’m not sure which way to go. I’m going to side with Vidal because I think she will have the more impactful moments.

Rendon (5-0) will faces Brazil’s Tamires Vidal (7-1) at a UFC Fight Night event on September 23, 2023. The card is expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Vidal confirmed the booking on her Instagram Story following an initial report by Eurosport.

Not only is Rendon skipping DWCS, she’s also missing the UFC’s September 16 event, which is being hosted to coincide with Mexican Independence Day. Regardless, the Invicta FC veteran is graduating straight to the big show after picking up a split decision win over Brittney Cloudy in her last fight.

Rendon also fought twice for Combate Global earlier in her career. She turned pro in 2020 after a handful of amateur fights.

Vidal, an LFA alum, made her UFC debut last November, putting away Ramona Pascual with a flying knee inside of a round. The Brazilian has not lost a fight since 2019, and has won six straight, including victories outside the UFC against Ailin Perez and PFL regular Martina Jindrova.

No main event has been announced or reported for the UFC’s September 23 Fight Night event, but the following match-ups are attached to the card:

Cowan (7-2), an LFA and Invicta FC veteran who won her way into the UFC on Dana White’s Contender Series last year, has seen her bout with Tamires Vidal (7-1) scratched from this Saturday’s UFC San Antonio card.

Vidal was forced out of the bout due to undisclosed medical reasons, per a statement by the promotion on Thursday.

“Due to a medical issue, Tamires Vidal has been removed from her bantamweight bout with Hailey Cowan. As a result, this bout has been cancelled from this weekend’s card,” the statement read.

With the fight being a late addition to the event, and weigh-ins coming tomorrow, no replacement has been sought.

It’s the second straight booking that has fallen through for Cowan. A match-up with Ailin Perez last month was cancelled when Cowan fell ill. With luck, the third time will be the charm — whenever that might be.

In the meantime, UFC San Antonio, which takes place Saturday, March 25, 2023 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, moves forward with the following match-ups:

On a night that boasted nine finishes — only two fights went the distance Saturday — Neil Magny, Mario Bautista, Polyana Viana, and Tamires Vidal all picked up $50,000 Performance of the Night bonuses.

No Fight of the Night was awarded Saturday, and given the number of stoppages, that’s not entirely surprising.

Perhaps no finish at UFC Vegas 64 had a bigger impact that Neil Magny’s submission of Daniel Rodriguez. “D-Rod” is a bit of a budding star for the promotion, but veteran Magny locked up a D’Arce choke in the third round of their co-main event welterweight fight. With the win, Magny now holds the record for most wins in UFC welterweight history, at 20, surpassing Georges St. Pierre.

Newcomer Tamires Vidal shocked fans with her octagon debut victory, meanwhile. She also shocked opponent Ramona Pascual, who came in heavy for the bantamweight fight, with a flying knee to end the fight in the opening round. Strawweight Polyana Viana packed plenty of power into her petite frame, knocking out former Invicta FC atomweight champ Jinh Yu Frey.

Finally, Mario Bautista showed some slick ground skills when he pulled off a reverse triangle arm-bar against Benito Lopez.

Newcomer Tamires Vidal helped kick off the UFC Vegas 64 card, in a women’s bantamweight fight against Ramona Pascual.

More accurately, it would have been a women’s bantamweight fight, but Pascual, previously fighting at featherweight, missed weight by a pound ahead of the event. Not a good look, with the fighter representing Hong Kong looking to snap a two-fight skid.

Vidal, a former soccer player, was 6-1 in her MMA career heading into her debut with her only loss coming in her second fight against current UFC fighter Karol Rosa. Vidal had won her last five fights with a pair of submissions, including a win in LFA.

In the opening round, both started off trading kicks. Vidal cliched up but took a hard punch and a knee on the way in. Nothing came from the clinch and Pascual landed an elbow off the brake. Vidal landed a good knee in the clinch. Off that Vidal threw a switch knee to the midsection and Pascual was done.
