The start of a new series for ONE Championship in Japan, ONE Samurai 1 had multiple title fights on a stacked mid-week card. Rodtang and Takeru were up for interim gold in kickboxing, while three other championship bouts also featured.

The main event also served as Takeru’s retirement fight, making the belt in question a rather one-sided affair.

In a press release distributed on Wednesday, ONE officials revealed that the inaugural event in the series will take place on April 29, 2026 at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo.

ONE Samurai events will take place monthly, airing on streaming service U-NEXT in Japan, with international broadcast details to be announced shortly. The promotion will host 60 events over a five year span, per Wednesday’s announcement.

As with all other ONE Championship cards, fans can expect to see action in multiple disciplines including MMA, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and submission grappling. Each event is expected to “showcase multiple World Title fights with a strong focus on Japanese talent,” the promotion stated.

A press conference held in conjunction with the ONE Samurai announcement also introduced Shuntaro Tanaka as ONE Championship’s CEO, Japan & Group Chief Commercial Officer.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, many of ONE Championship’s flagships events were held in Singapore. In more recent years, Thailand has become the company’s main territory, with their ONE Friday Fights series held exclusively at the Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok.

The company last visited Japan in November, with ONE 173 held at the Ariake Arena. March 2025 also saw a super-fight between Rodtang and Takeru held at the Saitama Super Arena.

In a flyweight kickboxing showdown, Japan’s own Takeru Segawa was set to take on Thai star Rodtang Jitmuangnon, one of the biggest possible fights the promotion could put on. With Takeru a superstar in Japan and Rodtang massive in his native Thailand, it was a huge fight for South East Asia, and kickboxing as a whole.

It was preceded, mind you, by a quartet of title fights, and what should have been a fifth- though one of those had been thrown for a loop at the ONE 172 weigh-ins. After missing weight and hydration, Superlek Kiatmoo9 had been stripped of the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai championship. As a result, his rematch against Nabil Anane had been switched to a three-round, non-title affair.

The remaining championship bouts on the ONE 172 card saw Tawanchai and Masaaki Noiri fighting for an interim featherweight kickboxing belt, Jonathan Di Bella looking to claim an interim strawweight kickboxing title opposite Sam-A Gaiyanghadao, and on the MMA side, Adriano Moraes and Yuya Wakamatsu face off for flyweight gold. And finally, Phetjeeja Lukjaoporongtom and Kana Morimoto competing for ONE Championship’s atomweight kickboxing title.

ONE Championship officials announced in a press release issued on Monday that Takeru Segawa will face Rodtang Jitmuangnon in a five-round kickboxing contest at the Saitama Super Arena on March 23, 2025.

Japan’s Takeru is a former K-1 champion and grand prix winner, with over 40 wins in kickboxing and Muay Thai. The 33-year old, fighting for RISE at the time, took part in a cross-promotional bout known as The Match in 2022 with RIZIN rival Tenshin Nasukawa, losing the fight by unanimous decision.

Takeru signed with ONE Championship in 2024, posting a 1-1 record to start his run with the company.

Rodtang has long been one of the biggest stars in Muay Thai, and biggest stars in ONE Championship. Despite being just 27, he boasts 273 recorded wins in kickboxing and Muay Thai. A former ONE flyweight Muay Thai champ, he was stripped of his title after missing weight for a fight with Jacob Smith in November.

The Thai star became something of a household name for combat sports fans when he competed in a mixed rules fight with Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson at ONE X in 2022, where he was choked out in the second round via rear-naked choke.

No fights beyond Takeru vs. Rodtang have been announced for ONE 172. The event continues something of a return to the road for ONE Championship, who host ONE 171 in Qatar in February.

As two fighters at the apex of the most popular combat sports in their country, Superlek vs Takeru is truly a superfight, putting Muay Thai against Japanese kickboxing, two-weight Lumpinee Stadium champion against the first ever three-weight K-1 champion. Takeru has always been known for his heavy hands, aggression, and durability. Those traits have made him one of the premier action fighters in any combat sport in the world today. His only loss in ten years was against the greatest kickboxer of the millennium, Tenshin Nasukawa, in the biggest fight in Japanese kickboxing history. Meanwhile, Superlek has found a perfect mix of violence and tactical smarts, being one of the foremost technicians in striking today and argubly the pound-for-pound best nak muay in Thailand today. However his belt in ONE Championship is in kickboxing, making him the perfect choice to fight Takeru after Rodtang was unable to.

Takeru had trouble getting into punching range in the first round Superlek kicked hie foe up. Takeru tried to come back with his own leg kicks but Superlek turned up the intensity, jabbibg Takeru up and slaming in leg and body kicks. He got off to a really hot start, and the first round was a clear 10-9 for the champion.

Round two saw Takeru try even harder to press forward and corner Superlek to unload with his punches, but the leg kicks continued to eat his lead left leg up and he began to move gingerly on it. However he did indeed start to corner Superlek halfway through the round and land some punches. Takeru also began to check some of the leg kicks, but the ones he did eat were the most damaging strikes by far. Superlek ended the round with a rope-a-dope.

The hardest pound-for-pound kicker in the world continued to generate absurd power with his leg kicks, and even began to put Takeru on the back foot at points of the third round. With one minute left in the round, Takeru began one of the biggest flurries of his career, throwing a good twenty or thirty punches to the body and head in a matter of seconds, finally making Superlek turtle up and look like he has a weakness. Takeru had to steal at least one round before the championship rounds and he did just that.

Now that Takeru had worn down the champ somewhat, each engagement was more even. Superlek’s kicking was still a dynamic threat, but Takeru’s hands had finally got going and he was routinely tagging the champ. Superlek particularly did not seem to be liking the body punches. However, Superlek began to show a new threat, step-in knees to the body which damaged Takeru. Segawa still just smiled back at Superlek, did a little shimmy, and charged forward more. For the first time, a round’s score was in doubt. The fourth could have gone to either man.

The final round could have started with a tie score, but there was a chance Takeru needed a finish. Superlek’s jab got going early in the round and controlled the space to start, but the relentlessness of Takeru can get him into any fight. Superlek’s knees to the body came even more than the previous round. The action was a consant back and forth, becuase immediately after multiple good knees, Takeru hurt him with a right hand. Superlek’s chin was absurd as ever though, as he fired right back. They absoultely took lumps out of each other for the final minute and a half. Both men were nearly winded but refused to quite, just stumbling forward to do battle with each other until the final bell. After a war like that, the best fight in elite level combat sports this year so far, there was only one thing left to do.

When the judges’ scorecards were read, the call was “and still,” as Superlek Kiatmuu9 defended his title and won his eleventh fight in a row. Although the Japanese fighter and crowd were disappointed, both were classy in defeat, showing appreciation and respect for the champion.

When asked what is next for him, Superlek said he is ready for whatever Chatri throws at him, including going to Muay Thai again to fight Rodtang for his title, which he would have already won if he did not miss weight. For his performance in the Fight of the Night, Superlek recieved $50,000 from Chatri Sityodtong as a bonus.

When the broadcast went to interview Takeru, the superstar was in tears and recieved massive applause and support from his home faithful. His long, emotional speech was shortened by translation, but the translator said that Takeru said he does not know if he can do this anymore, hinting at retirement. He limped to the center of the ring thereafter and bowed his head to the ground, in what was clearly a spiritual experience for him, someone whose religion is combat.

On Thursday, promotion officials announced via press release that ONE 165 will be headlined by Muay Thai star Rodtang Jitmuangnon taking on Japanese ace Takeru Segawa. The event is set to take place on January 28, 2024 at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

Rodtang vs. Takeru will be contested over five rounds in the flyweight division.

One other fight was announced for ONE 165 on Thursday, a lightweight MMA battle between “Super” Sage Northcutt and Japanese legend Shinya Aoki.

It’s Rodtang versus Takeru that will no doubt have fight fans buzzing, however. The pair are widely regarded as two of the most dangerous strikers in combat sports.

Having earned his spot in history as the only three-weight K-1 champ ever, Takeru has been fighting on the biggest stages for years. In 2022, he was paired up with another of Japan’s biggest stars, Tenshin Nasukawa, in a cross-promotional effort involving RISE, K-1, and RIZIN’s Nobuyuki Sakakibara. That card reportedly drew over 500,000 buys on PPV in Japan, with a crowd of 56,399 taking in the spectacle at the Tokyo Dome.

Takeru lost the bout by unanimous decision, but has since returned to the win column. Rodtang, meanwhile, will enter the fight off a loss to Superlek Kiatmoo9 in a non-title affair this past September, after Superlek missed weight. The 26-year old known as “The Iron Main” remains the ONE flyweight Muay Thai champion as a result.

Tenshin, an undefeated sensation in kickboxing since his teens, had called out Takeru as early as 2015. But with the fighters competing for different promotions, a fight never transpired. That led to a stalemate: K-1 was only willing to make the fight happen if they could sign Nasukawa to an exclusive deal. RISE were willing to lone out their star, but not willing to lose him entirely.

By 2016, with Tenshin fighting in RIZIN, a promotion willing to cross-promote and who had worked with K-1, the fight seemed close to happening. But K-1 then ended their partnership with the successor to PRIDE, and once again, hopes were dashed.

But all these years later, a cross-promotion, with RIZIN chief Nobuyuki Sakakibara taking part, finally managed to get a deal done. End result, The Match 2022. 43-0 Tenshin would finally face three-division K-1 champ Takeru.

On Friday, during an official K-1 Kickboxing press conference, a 58kg (128lb) match-up between RIZIN star Tenshin Nasukawa and K-1’s Takeru Segawa was announced. The pairing has been hotly anticipated for the past few years, and up until Friday’s announcement, was at risk of slipping away, with Tenshin previously stating that he would retire from kickboxing shortly, and transition into boxing full time. That compounded an already difficult situation politically, with the fighters under contract to different promotions.

In an opening statement during Friday’s press conference, RIZIN CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara stated that “it would sound cheap to call it the ‘dream card.’ It is rather, the fight of the century: ‘the match‘” (h/t TheFighter.net). He later took to social media to refer to the bout as a “Christmas Gift from ‘Uncle No Comment.'”

Tenshin Nasukawa has long been one of RIZIN Fighting Federation’s biggest stars. A teenage prodigy when he started his fighting career, 23-year old Tenshin has compiled a 42-0 record in kickboxing, after piling up nearly 100 victories as an amateur. In addition, he’s 4-0 in MMA, though he has not competed in that realm since 2017. In Kickboxing, he’s won a RIZIN grand prix, and held titles under RISE and IKSA.

Infamously, Tenshin was matched up with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition boxing match in 2018. Out-sized and giving up decades of experience, he was stopped via TKO within a round.

Takeru Segawa has built up an equally impressive resume, posting a 42-2 record as a professional kickboxer. He’s won the super bantamweight, featherweight, and super featherweight titles in K-1, and is a multiple time K-1 Grand Prix winner.

Details on the rule set, number of rounds, and which promotion’s ring the fight will take place in are still being hammered out. Sakakibara is set to head up a committee overseeing the event, with details to follow further down the line. Even the exact date and location of the event is yet to be revealed.
