UFC Vegas 104 featured a 13-fight card that boasted nine finishes in total. And what the card lacked in star power it more than made up for in the action that it delivered.

Several undefeated fighters also lost their 0s on Saturday. The six-fight main card had four fights end with stoppages. This included back-to-back kimura submission finishes. In the main event, a middleweight rematch, Roman Dolidze bested Marvin Vettori over the course of five rounds. And in the co-main event, Elizeu Zaleski suffered a rare stoppage defeat courtesy of Chidi Njokuani. A pair of TUF Season 31 vets are featured on this edition of losers matchmaker as well.

Marvin Vettori

Saturday, Marvin Vettori lost a competitive unanimous decision to familiar foe in Roman Dolidze. Marvin entered the fight ranked at #8 in the middleweight division while his opponent was ranked at #12.

The two men first fought almost two years ago with Vettori walking away with the unanimous decision nod (though that bout was only a three rounder). Saturday was the Italian fighter’s first time losing two fights in a row in his pro MMA career. Marvin is 2-3 since losing his title shot against then middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, in 2021.

This was a competitive bout especially factoring in the eye pokes by Dolidze. Realistically, Vettori and Dolidze are 1-1 thru two pretty competitive bouts as ranked middleweights. On Sunday, Vettori even reluctantly tweeted that he would be in favor of a trilogy.

While I could see a trilogy sometime in the future, an immediate one just doesn’t seem like fans want right now. The rematch between these two fighters might have even been a little premature.

Instead, Vettori should fight the winner of Bo Nickal vs Reinier de Ridder. That bout is scheduled for May 3rd. Both fighters are skilled grapplers though they boast different styles of grappling. Nickal, arguably one of the most hyped UFC additions ever, was a storied wrestler at Penn State and has absolutely dominated in MMA. Bo went 2-0 on the 2022 season of the Contender Series before racking up four wins with the promotion.

Reinier de Ridder is the #13 ranked UFC middleweight. Reinier is the former ONE FC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion. de Ridder went 7-2 with ONE FC before he was picked up by the UFC late last year. Reinier’s last win came in January with a first-round sub over Kevin Holland. Bo’s last fight was a unanimous decision victory opposite of Paul Craig last November. It was Nickal’s first time hearing the final bell while competing in the sport.

These are two very talented prospects that a lot of fans have eyes on. Whoever makes it thru that May 3rd bout will need a fight against someone that has seen a good amount of elite UFC-level competition. Marvin would be the perfect matchup for the winner of the bout and fans would get a good grappler-striker matchup no matter what. It’d be a great opportunity for Marvin to show that he still has what it takes to be with the elites of the division. A finish of either fighter would be a huge statement.

Vettori’s next fight: Winner of Reinier de Ridder vs Bo Nickal

Elizeu Zaleski

Elizeu Zaleski was violently stopped by Chidi Njokuani in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 104, Saturday. The loss was just the second time that Elizeu has been finished in his 10-year, 17-fight UFC tenure. Elizeu, who turns 39 later this year, started out 7-1 with the promotion. And although Elizeu is 1-2-1 in his last four bouts, he always puts on a good scrap.

Chidi, Zaleski’s opponent, missed weight ahead of this bout so that’s an aspect that needs to be factored in as well.

Elizeu’s next opponent should be Bryan Battle. Bryan, the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 29 in 2021, has gone 7-1, 1 NC while with the UFC.

It’s worth noting that Battle is also a guy that has struggled with his weight. “The Butcher” won TUF at middleweight but has since moved down to welterweight following his UFC debut. Bryan’s lone loss is to Rinat Fakhretidnov in 2022 who Elizeu fought to a draw the following year. Battle’s most recent fight was against Randy Brown who he defeated by split decision last December. (Though he missed weight for that bout by 4lbs.) Brown fought Zaleski in his fight prior to that one and defeated the Brazilian by unanimous decision. This fight makes too much sense not to happen as the trajectories of both fighters make this one a no-brainer. This fight has fun striking battle written all over it and the winner would be looking for maybe one more win to push towards a shot at the rankings.

Zaleski dos Santos’s next fight: Bryan Battle

Kurt Holobaugh

Kurt Holobaugh dropped a unanimous decision to Alexander Hernandez on Saturday at UFC Vegas 104. Holobaugh, who has experienced chance after chance with the UFC, is now 2-6 with the promotion. Kurt has lost two of his last three fights since defeating Austin Hubbard to win Season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Next fight for the 38-year-old should be against Viacheslav Borshchev. Viacheslav is a 2021 Contender Series veteran that has yet to be in a boring UFC fight. “Slava Claus” is 3-4, 1 NC, thru his 8-fight UFC stint. With three performance bonuses, Borshchev always brings the striking action. Borshchev lost a unaimous decision to Tom Nolan in his most recent fight on February 8th. This would be a solid lightweight scrap between two former Contender Series guys that put on entertaining fights but are clawing to remain on the UFC’s crowded 155lbs. roster.

Holobaugh’s next fight: Viacheslav Borshchev

Cody Gibson

Cody Gibson was submitted via kimura late in the second round of his UFC Vegas 104 fight against Da’mon Blackshear Saturday. Gibson is 2-2 since losing the tournament championship of Season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter to Brad Katona in 2023.

Gibson’s next fight should be against the loser of Davey Grant vs Daniel Santos. That fight is scheduled for April 5th. Cody has had just one canceled fight during this stint with the UFC, and it was against Davey Grant. Davey is 7-6 with the UFC since 2013. Grant has won three of his last four fights only losing a split decision to Daniel Marcos in 2023. Daniel Santos is 2-1 with the promotion but last fought in 2023 with his unanimous decision victory over Johnny Munoz Jr. Santos has had five cancelled fights since he entered the UFC (with four of those cancellations being because of him) so it’s unfortunate that Gibson likely won’t be in a position to step in for this one should something happen pre-fight.

Winner of this fight would be looking to get a foothold on their UFC career, everyone here is fighting to stay above .500.

Gibson’s Next fight: Loser of Daniel Santos vs David Grant

Diyar Nurgozhay

Diyar Nurgozhay suffered the first defeat of his professional career Saturday when he was submitted by Brendson Ribeiro. Nurgozhay entered the fight with a perfect 10-0 pro MMA record. A veteran of Dagestan, Russia’s Eagle Fighting Championship, Diyar won the EFC light heavyweight championship in 2022. Nurgozhay impressed on last year’s season of the Contender Series with his second-round head kick finish that earned himself a UFC contract.

Diyar missed weight ahead of this fight (by 4.5lbs.) so losing his undefeated record and being finished on top of that, really has to sting. And that first round didn’t go the greatest either, it was an all-around rough debut for Nurgozhay. I’m reasonably confident that the 6’2″, 27-year-old will stay at 205lbs. as he has competed at as light as 185lbs. in his pro MMA career.

Diyar should fight the loser of Navajo Stirling vs Ivan Erslan. That fight is set to go down on the undercard of UFC 315 on May 10th. Navajo Stirling is a 27-year-old prospect out of City Kickboxing. Stirling earned a UFC contract last year with his second round KO on the Contender Series. The undefeated striker won his UFC debut last year with a unaimous decision victory over Tuco Tokkos. Ivan Erslan is a 33-year-old former KSW standout. Erslan dropped his first UFC fight, losing split decision to Ion Cutelaba last September. Whoever loses that fight should get Diyar. All three fighters have potential though Erslan is noticeably farther in his career than both the Contender Series vets.

Nurgozhay’s next fight: Loser of Ivan Erslan vs Navajo Stirling

Seung Woo Choi

Seung Woo Choi was flattened and finished in round one of his bout with Kevin Vallejos to kick off UFC Vegas 104’s main card. Choi has now lost five of his last six fights dating back to late 2021. And to add insult to injury, Seung has been finished in four of those five losses.

Choi’s record with the UFC now sits at 4-7 though he’s only lost two in a row. Seung is in real danger of being cut here. But at 32 years old, and competing in the featherweight division, Seung still has some tread left on the tires. And the South Korean has certainly had some difficult competition in his tenure with the promotion.

Seung Woo Choi should face Shayilan Nuerdanbieke in his next fight. Shayilan is 3-3 with the UFC since being signed in 2021. The Chinese fighter has lost his last two fights being finished by Steve Garcia and most recently, Melquizael Costa, last June. Nuerdanbieke also has a unanimous decision defeat to Josh Culibao. Choi is now also just one fight removed from being finished by Garcia. And Seung also lost a decision to Josh Culibao who has since been released by the UFC (more evidence of how close Seung is to being cut). This would be a striker vs. grappler matchup with the loser on the hot seat.

Choi’s next fight: Shayilan Nuerdanbieke

Two-time Contender Series alum Kevin Vallejos finally made his promotional debut at UFC Vegas 104 on Saturday, taking on Seung-Woo Choi in a featherweight fight.

The bout kicked off the Fight Night event’s main card, and found Choi coming in off a loss against Steve Garcia.

The fight kicked off with Choi throwing a lot of kicks. Vallejos was more conservative but you could see that he was loading up when he did fire back. Choi was doing a good job of fighting at range with the calf kicks and straight right however.

The few leg kicks landed by Vallejos were landing with more impact. Kevin Vallejos was inching his strikes in little by little, as was the case with his leg kicks and body work, while countering well. Once he found his timing, he slipped a right hand to land a right of his own. That dropped Choi and the unanswered ground n’ pound brought about an end to the fight.

He took a setback and then a return to form to get here, but Kevin Vallejos arrived in style in the UFC on Saturday. He called for a bonus following the finish, though he’ll have some stiff competition on that front.

Official Result: Kevin Vallejos def. Choi Seung-woo by TKO (Right hand and GNP), round 1, 3:09

UFC on ESPN 60 / UFC Vegas 94 on Saturday featured an undercard of fights that had just one finish. The main card, however, completely delivered with five of six fights ending in a stoppage. All of the night’s performance bonuses were, in fact, delivered to fighters on the main card. In the main event, Virna Jandiroba all but cemented herself as the next strawweight title challenger with her submission victory over Amanda Lemos. Multiple fighters will need to pick up the pieces after devastating stoppages and look for their next opponents after Saturday’s card.

Amanda Lemos

In the main event of UFC Vegas 94, Amanda Lemos was armbar’d in the second round by surging contender Virna Jandiroba. Lemos entered the fight as the #3 ranked UFC women’s strawweight. Jandiroba entered the fight the #5 ranked women’s strawweight and will likely be next in line for a title shot at 115lbs.

Tatiana Suarez should be the next fighter that Lemos faces. Lemos has only beaten #7 ranked Mackenzie Dern since losing to Weili Zhang for the belt last August. If Lemos is able to beat the #1 ranked UFC women’s strawweight in Suarez, then that would put her right back in line for title contention. Lemos was also temporarily matched up to face Tatiana Suarez in February, but Suarez withdrew.

Lemos’s next fight: Tatiana Suarez

Seung Woo Choi

Seung Woo Choi was added to Steve Garcia’s finish streak in the co main event of UFC Vegas 94. ‘Sting’ is now 4-6 with the UFC and has lost four of his last five bouts. His last win was against Jarno Errens in August of last year. Perhaps a fight against a fighter in-between weight classes or battling back in their career as well would be the best fit.

Julio Arce or Alexander Hernandez would be excellent competitors to fight against Seung Woo Choi in his next bout at 145lbs.

Arce was last in the octagon back in March when he missed weight ahead of his second-round finish against Herbert Burns. The fight was at 145lbs. However, the four fights prior to that one were at bantamweight where he went 2-2. And he’s also missed weight at 135lbs. He’s a 2017 Contender Series product that began his 6-4 UFC career with 5 fights at featherweight.

Alexander Hernandez is also a solid pick that is in a similar position. Hernandez has lost four of his last five fights. Three of those five fights have been at featherweight. Hernandez is 6-7 in the UFC and although he has had many notable fights at 155lbs. has started an experiment at featherweight in recent years. Alexander was last in action back in April when he lost a co main event via split decision at the hands of Damon Jackson.

Choi’s next fight: Julio Arce or Alexander Hernandez

Kaynan Kruschewsky

Kaynan Kruschewsky lost a unanimous decision to TUF 31 winner Kurt Holobaugh on Saturday. Kruschewsky is now 0-2 in the UFC since signing with the promotion last year as a result of his Contender Series win.

Undoubtedly Kaynan is in a tough spot as a lightweight and will have to fight for his roster spot. Cage Warriors veteran Michal Figlak would be a good fight for Kruschewsky. Michal last fought in April when he lost a unanimous decision to Austin Hubbard (Hubbard was the man who Holobaugh beat to win TUF 31). In his UFC debut he lost a unanimous decision to Fares Ziam. Solid fight to make for two winless fighters at lightweight.

Kruschewsky’s next fight: Michal Figlak

Cody Durden

Cody Durden was stopped when Bruno Silva completed an improbable comeback to finish him in the second round of their fight on Saturday. Durden entered the fight at the #14 slot in the UFC’s flyweight divison, while his opponent was unranked.

Durden should fight the winner of the Jafel Filho vs. Allan Nascimento on August 10th. Jafel Filho is a 2022 Contender Series product. Filho has finished both of his wins, and his only loss is to (#6 ranked UFC flyweight) Muhammed Mokaev in March of last year. Allan Nascimento is also 2-1 in the UFC, has finished his most recent opponent and his only loss in the UFC, is a split decision to (#13 ranked UFC Flyweight) Tagir Ulanbekov.

Durden’s next fight: Jafel Filho vs. Allan Nascimento Winner

Bill Algeo

Bill Algeo was finished in a wild back-and-forth fight to Doo Ho Choi on Saturday. Algeo is now 5-5 with the UFC, though all of the 2019 Contender Series alum’s losses have been to names. (Ricardo Lamas, Ricardo Ramos, Andre Fili, Kyle Nelson)

Charles Jourdain should be Algeo’s next fight. Jourdain has also last his two fights, both having been in 2024, as well. Jourdain was finished for the first time in his career nearly a month ago at the hands of Jean Silva. With a similar record to Algeo at 6-7-1 in the UFC and having faced mutual opponents in Andre Fili, Doo Ho Choi, and Ricardo Ramos, this would be a great striking matchup.

Algeo’s next fight: Charles Jourdain

Jeong Yeong Lee

To open the UFC Vegas 94 main card on Saturday, Jeong Yeong Lee lost a barn burner fight at the hands of Hyder Amil. Jeong Yeong Lee, the winner of Road to UFC in 2022, is now 2-1 with the promotion.

Morgan Charriere should be Jeong Yeong Lee’s next fight. Charriere was signed to the UFC from the Cage Warriors promotion last year. He is 1-1 with the UFC and the majority of his career stoppages are from KO/TKO. Morgan was last in action in April when he lost a split decision to Chepe Mariscal. He was recently slated to fight AJ Cunningham on September 28th. AJ is a 2023 Contender Series product that is 0-1 in the UFC. He was last in action against L’udovit Klein earlier this year and was finished in the first round.

The winner of this bout would be a good fight for Lee.

Lee’s next fight: Morgan Charriere vs. AJ Cunningham Winner

Garcia came into this fight on the best streak of his UFC career with a three-fight winning streak, putting him on the cusp of ranked contention. In his way stood Choi, who once had a streak of his own like that but is just 1-3 since then. Steve knew that if he could capitalize as a small favorite, he would have a strong argument to fight a ranked fighter next, and that is just what he did.

Garcia charged forward to begin the fight, as he is wont to do with his crazy style. They ended up in the clinch where Steve worked to take Seung-Woo down but could not. When they traded blows again, a leg kick from Choi drew first blood by buckling Garcia’s leg. However, Garcia is one of the most undeterrable fighters ever. He came back with a barrage of punches and did not let up until he had rocked Choi. Then he picked his punches, his foe fell down, and ground strikes finished the job.

With his fourth straight knockout, Garcia cemented himself as solely in control of first place for the longest active knockout streak in the UFC, which is no small feat for a 145-lber.

Official Result: Steve Garcia def. Seung-Woo Choi by TKO (punches) Round 1, 1:36

There’s a strong South Korean contingent in action at Saturday’s UFC Vegas 94, including featherweight Seung-Woo Choi.

Choi is no stranger to the UFC Apex, where the promotion has remained mired far beyond the end of the lockdown phase of COVID-19.

“This is like my home. It’s the fourth [fight] at the Apex, so I feel familiar and very comfortable,” Choi (11-6) said during this week’s UFC Vegas 94 media day. And while Choi might miss fighting in front of fans, technology has allowed him to at least keep in touch with them. “Of course I miss Korean fans,” he continued, adding that SMS messaging and other options “gives me very high strength from afar.”

Paired up with Choi is Steve Garcia, who’s been on a hot streak of late. Three straight wins, three straight finishes. “I think everything is going well for him. He’s tough, that’s all.”

Tough or not, however, Seung-Woo Choi, coming off a decision victory against Jarno Errens, has a game plan. He also believes openings will present themselves during the fight.

“Of course the opponent is tough, but I have prepared a good strategy for that, and I believe I will have opportunities. He actually had three [fights], and he won, but he hasn’t faced a proper opponent, a proper striker. I think I will have an opportunity this time.”

Kicking off Saturday’s UFC Singapore card, bright and early for western fight fans, were featherweights Seung Woo Choi and Jarno Errens.

Choi had lost three straight coming into the fight, while Errens had lost a majority decision against William Gomis last time out — his promotional debut.

Errens was active to start the fight at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, throwing any number of kicks and backing Choi up. A shin-on-shin collision resulted, but Errens appeared undeterred, continuing his kick-heavy attack. Choi answered with his own calf kick; about ninety seconds in, Errens grazed the cup of Choi, but they fought on. A right hand by Choi turned out to be his biggest strike in the opening half; Errens was hurt and clinched up. Choi reversed on the fence, but couldn’t get the fight down.

Coming off the fence, Errens came out swinging! He backed Choi up, connecting several times. Choi reversed momentum, going on the attack; at the end of the round, Errens shot a takedown but was too far out, leaving it to be easily stuffed by Choi, who was bleeding from one leg.

Early in round two, Errens dropped his opponent with an uppercut, getting on top with over three and a half minutes still on the clock. Errens worked from half-guard and looked to pass into mount. Choi however would scramble up, only for Errens to drag him back down. When they came back up in another scramble, however, it was Choi getting the upper hand, landing on top with Errens closing his guard. Choi worked in some elbows, and a right hand, but was running out of time to win back the round.

Round three opened with more creative kicks from Errens, similar to his start in the first. Choi went to the body with his kicks, and found some success with his counters. A head kick by Choi was blocked. A particularly nasty leg kick by Choi — or maybe just the accumulation of several throughout the fight — then sent Errens down. Choi got on top, arguably a tactical error given his opponent had been hobbled, and was ripe for a finish.

Choi instead wound up taking the back, eventually running out of time while hunting a rear-naked choke. A strong finish, however— and the judges had it in the South Korean’s favor.

Coming into a big fight card with three consecutive losses is UFC featherweight Seung Woo Choi, but he’s confident he can snap that streak at UFC Singapore on Saturday against Jarno Errens.

“When I lost twice in a row I did feel pressure, but then after the third loss I kind of like let everything go,” Choi told reporters through a translator on Thursday.

“I don’t really feel that pressure. I feel much more relaxed. I’m able to focus on this fight and not feel pressure, and enjoy the fight.”

Looking to grab a win and get back on track, he’ll get his chance against Errens, who he feels isn’t nearly as tough as he is. He counts on toughness to win his fight at UFC Singapore.

“I’m definitely tougher than my opponent. In every department like striking, wrestling and cardio, I think I’m better than my opponent,” he said.

The South Korean will be on a card headlined by one of his country’s heroes in Chang Sung Jung, The Korean Zombie, who has put Korean MMA on the map for years.

“When I was preparing for this fight I trained with The Korean Zombie. Everyday I woke up and I trained with Korean Zombie. Whenever I looked at him I as inspired because he’s been in the top ranking for over a decade,” Choi said.

“So whenever I look at him and train with him I was able to overcome any hardships that came within the camp. It was a very important and happy time for me to be able to train with Korean Zombie.”

UFC 281 found The Ultimate Fighter 27 winner Michael Trizano looking to pull out of a tailspin, having lost two straight and three of his last four. In New York City on Saturday night, Big Apple native Trizano was paired up with South Korean Seung Woo Choi, who had likewise dropped back-to-back contests.

A double knockdown got the crowd to its feet early in Trizano vs. Choi, and the pace didn’t let up from there. They both made it back up, but Choi would wind up dropped again! The pair next came together in a clinch, knees and elbows fired. Somehow Choi had recovered, and even managed to fire a head kick that was blocked. A right hand by Choi hit the mark. He tagged Trizano again late, and surged forward throwing wildly! They tied up, with a full 90 seconds still to go in the round.

In the end, they wouldn’t need more than a round to finish things up. Instead, Trizano dropped Choi once more in the dying seconds of the round. He piled on with ground n’ pound to put the fight away with less than 10 seconds remaining! A huge, badly needed victory for the TUF winner, in his own back yard in New York City!

Whether that would carry over into their featured preliminary card featherweight fight on Saturday in Singapore remained to be seen. But it certainly made the bout one worthy of keeping an eye on.

There was plenty of action to start the fight, though both men appeared to be finding their range early. Choi broke out a number of kicks; Culibao just missed on a left hook. Another left would hit home for Culibao a moment later, but Choi ate it, and continued to walk his opponent down. Choi connected with a kick to the thigh, and Culibao fired a head kick. It was a left hand, however, that rocked Choi, who quickly shook it off.

With just over a minute remaining, the pair began trading in the pocket, with Choi rocked multiple times! Choi somehow hung on, eating a barrage of hammer fists when Culibao pounced on him by the fest. Somehow, Choi even battled back, teeing off on Culibao and forcing him to backpedal!

A fiery end to the opening round — heading into the second, the question had become, who could recover first?

Choi opened round two with a low kick. A right hook landed for him just under a minute in. Culibao blocked a high kick, and fired a jab. He doubled up on his jab, and Choi backed off. Culibao switched stances; moments later, he dropped Choi! The South Korean rolled over on top of himself, but made it back up and managed to stay in the fight. Chin? Choi certainly had an iron one.

Seung Woo Choi snapped a head kick that was blocked but still sounded harsh. Culibao, meanwhile, continued to switch stances, keeping Choi from finding his rhythm. Culibao caught Choi with a right, backing him up. Well, a step or two anyway.

Through two rounds, Seung Woo Choi vs. Josh Culibao had been an action-packed fight. The third was no exception. Culibao tagged Choi just under two minutes in. He’d already been winning the stand-up battles, and takedowns had rarely come into play, though they would clinch up near the midway mark of the round. In the end, went they did go to the ground, Choi managed to take the back and lock on a body triangle. He got under the chin more than once, forcing Culibao to fight hands and stave off a submission. Culibao would make it to the buzzer, and pick up the win on the scorecards off the strength of his first two rounds.

Official Result: Josh Culibao def. Seung Woo Choi by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

Maddalena (11-2) had a successful UFC debut in January. At UFC 270, he knocked out Pete Rodriguez in less than three minutes. The Australian fighter is riding an 11-fight win streak and has finished all but one of his opponents. Maddalena is already considered one of the most exciting fighters on the roster.

Emeev (20-5) had his two-fight win streak snapped last October when he lost a split decision to Danny Roberts. Prior to losing, the Russian beat David Zawada and Niklas Stolze.

Choi (10-4) was submitted by Alex Caceres in his last outing, snapping his three-fight win streak. The Korean fighter put together three wins after dropping his first two UFC fights. He beat Suman Mokhtarian in 2019 and then Youssef Zalal and Julian Erosa in 2021, receiving a Performance of the Night bonus for his knockout of Erosa. Choi was scheduled to fight Tucker Lutz in March but pulled out with an injury.

Culibao (9-1-1) picked up his first UFC win last May by defeating Shayilan Nuerdanbieke via unanimous decision. “Kuya” fought Charles Jourdain to a draw in 2020, and in his UFC debut, he was knocked out by Jalin Turner.

UFC 275 will take place in Singapore on June 11, 2022 and will feature two title fights.
So far, the event looks like this:

Glover Teixeira (c) vs. Jiri Prochazka – for the UFC light heavyweight title

Valentina Shevchenko (c) vs. Taila Santos – for the UFC women’s flyweight title
